HBO Begins Production On ROME's Second Season!!

Published at:  Apr 30, 2006 12:15:15 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

HBO announced in mid-September that it had renewed “Rome” for a second season. Then there was a report in the New York Times that shed some doubt on whether “Rome” 2.x would get into the premium-cable arena at all.

Well, HBO just issued this via “The Rome Newsletter” on Friday:

HBO's epic drama series ROME has begun production on its ten-episode second season, it was announced by Carolyn Strauss, president, HBO Entertainment. Filming of the new episodes will continue at Rome's Cinecitta Studios through next October, with debut set for 2007.

"This exciting series offers a spectacle unlike anything else on TV," noted Strauss. "The new episodes of ROME will go deeper into the intriguing characters and provocative storylines that made the first season a hit with critics and subscribers."

Chronicling the fall of a republic and the rise of an empire, the first season of ROME wrapped last December. TV Guide hailed it as a "feast for the eyes" and a "ripping good story," as well as a "shamelessly enjoyable historical romp," while the Washington Post described the series as "ravishing and wickedly shocking," and "a feast for the senses that includes generous portions of food for thought." In addition, ROME received two Golden Globe® nominations: Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama (Polly Walker).

Who shall die, that ROME might live?

    by mr inbetween

It was Carnivale last time, right? I love Rome and am very happy to hear this news, but my piss poor attitude brings me to fear the demise of some other show I like.

Not everyone will be back in S2.

    by annoyyou

Ciaran Hinds is, oddly, coming back, presumably as Great Caesar's Ghost ready to haunt someone (probably Brutus and Antony). Unfortunately they're re-casting the role of Octavian because they want an older actor, which sucks because Max Pirkis rules. I don't think he's even 17 yet, so he is a little young to play the Octavian who sets up the Triumvirate with Antony and thingy, Lepidus, which I expect will come in this season. Too bad. I think Servilia will bite it big time next year, though, which should be good. I hope to God my boys Pullo and Vorenus don't suffer, although they probably will.

    Only 10?

    by kdoc13

Only ten eps? I hope this is more like a Battlestar Galactica thing where another 10 follow a few months later. Too bad there will not be any more Niobe. I agree with Gandolf, she was the best female on the show. Plus, all kinds of hotness! I will have to toss one off to her in Kama Sutra in rememberence of Niobe.

    by moviemaniac-7

But, sadly, Ciaran Hinds - the best thing of the show - will not be there anymore. Rome was very, very likeable, but I hoped they focused the story lines more and not go all around the place. This is nice to get a sense of all the layers of the population, but I thought the execution was sloppy at times. Still, a very entertaining show.

    Yep, only 10

    by mrd

HBO keeps it short. Sopranos only gets 13 eps a season. Oz only got 8. Any wishing for a BSG type 10-10 season is pointless.

I'm going to be pissed if they recast Octavian

    by strabo

Max Pirkis did some phenomenal work in Master and Commander and in Rome. To inform the discussion a bit, here's a timeline. Octavian was born in 63 BC. Caesar's assassination was in 44 BC (Octavian was 19). By 42 BC, Octavian and Mark Antony had tracked down and defeated Brutus, Cassius, and the rest of the assassins. At that point, Antony and Octavian split, with Octavian returning to Rome, and Antony moving to Egypt to shack up with Cleopatra and her spawn with Caesar (jokingly inferred to be Pullo's child in the series). This situation persisted until 32 BC when Octavian and the Senate declared war against Cleopatra and Antony. The war was short, with Antony and Cleopatra both dying. After that, Octavian took the title Augustus and ruled in peace until his death in AD 19 (nothing really for a drama like this to be based on, given what it's shown so far). So, if we're lucky, this season will cover the two years between the assassination of Caesar and the deaths of Brutus and the rest of the conspirators, in which case, there is NO reason for them to recast the part. If they decide to show all the way through the death of Antony, then yeah, it would be understandable if they don't have currently 17 year old Max Pirkis play 31 year old Augustus Caesar.

    by chorleyfm

The most annoying thing though is that every year, if it does keep comming back, there will always be an 18 month wait for logistical reasons. This must be the craziest thing to shoot ever that hasn't just been a mini-series.

    by fitzcarraldo2

Fucking love Rome! Pullo and Vorenus vs the gladiators and the death of Caesar were two of the best moments ever on TV. Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd were amazing. I can see why they had to recast Octavian, he just lloks like a kid. Anyway I thought he was a bit wooden in Rome after being so good in Master and Commander.

    by maniaq

Don't really care about recasting Octavian, as long as whoever plays him does the part justice... Hooray for bringing Rome back! Can't BELIEVE anyone was seriously thinking about giving it the axe! Also, gotta say, I for one PREFER only 10 eps a season - too many eps KILLED Galactica (after such a promising start!) and it can't really HURT a series to keep the punters waiting anxiously for more...

    by fluffyunbound

show. I actually thought that accentuating Octavian's youth was a GOOD thing, because Pirkis looked really young but you could still be convinced that he was the smartest and most brutal guy in the room. But as long as they don't replace him with Hayden Christensen I'll still watch.

That guy is intense. Someone in Hollywood needs to buy up the movie right to the video game God of War and cast him as Kratos. $8 billion opening weekend guaranteed.

Finest show in years, along with The Wire and Deadwood

    by pumpkinsboy

Some great history to be covered in this season. *Spoilers* Brutus' defeat, Octavian's rise as the hero of Caesar's veterans, the triumverate, Cicero's murder, the battle of Actium, Antony and Cleopatra...but strangely, what I'm looking forward to most is seeing how Pullo and Verenus's fates play out. ROME is probably the first halfway accurate depiction of this time period - the brutality, lack of sentimentality and sheer disregard for human life. I'm getting hard just thinking about Polly Walker too, the nasty little green-eyed minx.

Neat, so how 'bout that Carnivale?

    by scrivener

While Rome and Deadwood are decent shows (actually, Deadwood S2 was pretty damn weak) - I'm not picking up HBO until/unless we get a proper Carnivale conclusion. Even if it's in miniseries form - leaving the show hanging like that was fucked up. Also, I thought Rome ended perfectly for a single-season show. Since it didn't even have as big a viewership as Carnivale (which was climbing, btw) how the hell can they justify a second season? Where could they possibly take it? Give us back Carnivale, and keep your Rome.

    by lezbo milk

20 -24 episodes long? I hate this 10 weeks, then wait a year and a half...10 more weeks, then wait two years...10 weeks, then wait fourteen months. For fucking shit sake, if you're going to make the best shows on television, at least make an honest to God full season of something. You're making enough money HBO, come on!

Lindsey Davis' gumshoe character series, set in Rome several decades after the Julii dynasty has gone. ROME is a great series, and bravo for more eps, and more of Titus and Pullo, but being stuck in Rome without getting much more of a flavor for anything else... well, I want something else.
