The Evil That ACCESS HOLLYWOOD Caused
My pal over at ROUGH CUT, David Poland sent me a note about something that ACCESS HOLLYWOOD did. You see, what happened was this. UNIVERSAL STUDIOS did the amazingly cool deal and released their PSYCHO trailer on the net first. They World Premeired it right on this electrical marvel we surf around. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's pretty darn cool. Well, apparently ACCESS HOLLYWOOD did a story that basically just showed the PSYCHO trailer straight off the net, and beat E.T. to the punch, thus starting a spat. What's the problem?
I mean, gosh, how many trailers have fans captured off their shows and brought to the net, shouldn't it be a two way street? Well, that's where we get into the problem. UNIVERSAL started hearing it from E.T. allegedly and now we are in danger of never having UNIVERSAL world premiere a trailer on the net again.
Well, to me, I can see two sides to this. First off, Entertainment Tonight shouldn't be hanging around acting solely upon press releases and get a little hungry and start paying attention to what's happening online. Admit they lost this round, but don't let the donkey kick them again.
And the other side for me is this, the internet is extremely important to the future of studio marketing. Holding world premiere events online tends to create a bit of an exciting buzz, which then seeps out through fans, the media and beyond. This is what Dave wanted me to put up and suggest to you folks:

This is what Dave wanted me to put up and suggest to you folks:
I am asking my readers to send email to the webmaster at NBC
(webmaster@nbc.com). They own Access Hollywood. I'm asking that they use
the simple subject line of "Access Hollywood’s Psycho Story Sucks." A
little inelegant, but the easier it is for people to send, the more likely
that they will.
Well that's kinda of self defeating for me. The way I think it ought to be handled is letters to UNIVERSAL blessing them for the world premiere of the PSYCHO trailer and a clap on the back for acknowledging this burgeoning medium.
You should title the email "KEEP BRINGING US TRAILERS LIKE PSYCHO FIRST!"
Universal Pictures
100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, Ca 91608-1085
And then you could write ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, and chastise them for LAZY reporting. You should nicely put it that reporting is not just about press releases, but keeping your fingers on the pulse of the business. Their business now includes and should include the internet. Griping about being beat to a story. Sheesh. Patrick (at Coming Attractions) and Garth (at Dark Horizons) and myself all beat each other to stories and we don't get all in a hissy about it. Usually we just try to be better and faster the next time. And that's what ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT should have learned from this ordeal. Stop waiting around for a fax, a courier, the FED EX van, pound the beat and pay attention to what is happening out here on the net. Or be prepared to be left behind. You should title your email "E.T. PAY ATTENTION TO THE NET"
Email Entertainment Tonight here!!!
And as for ACCESS HOLLYWOOD, I applaud them for paying attention. Just be sure to reference your sources and it's good to have them watching this big darn place called the net.
As for David Poland. Thanks for the heads up, this is something that every internet user that loves film should jump on. This is an important medium for news and information delivery, and access to exclusives should always be considered. So now it's in you good folks' hands. Get to typing. Go along with Poland's idea or mine, but react. Make your voice heard. Don't let E.T. dictate to us, UNIVERSAL and other news sources.

Just to talk about something you brought up in the article not directly related to the story...
You mentioned how you, Patrick at CA, and Garth at DH all beat each other to the punch constantly, but don't let it get to any of you.
I have noticed this, and think it's admirable. I'm a fairly regular reader of all three sites, and each of them recommends the other two as being an entertaining and worthwhile entertainment news service.
When will others take on this attitude? (I guess this does hark back to the point of the article.) It is possible to encourage healthy competition, and even compliment them. Maybe I'm being naive, but if these three fine sites can be outstandingly mature about it, why can't the rest of the world? -
Man, I always thought studios spent Millions on creating and distributing trailers to advertise the upcoming films.
seems Universals getting there moneys worth.
I wonder if Paramount and Universal had some press agreement to let et have some dumb exclusive publicity rights to the movie. If so... to bad.. its an AD! -
Why would anyone care where the hell a trailer premieres? I don't, as long as I get to see it.
I personally don't give a crap if they ever premier one exclusively on the net again. Only introverted geeks would rather watch something on their PC rather than on a real TV or Theater screen. Same reason as to why the hell would anyone want to watch a DVD movie on their monitor? Just because they can? Losers. Give me a 32" screen and surround sound. Also, not everyone has access to the 'net, or can connect at the speed needed to view video properly. And that's what it all comes down to, doesn't it Harry? You don't give a shit about freedom or using the 'net to it's advantage. You care about geeks and nerds being the first and only ones to have access to these trailers, with all the non-internet people being the majority and thus left out. Until
every home has a PC and everyone can connect at T3 speed, your ideas are just selfish bullshit. Forget about the stupid politics and just report on the rumors and buzz.
This site is really beginning to get boring. -
Personally, I think all trailers should be premiered by projecting them onto the building across the street from my apartment. That way, I'd see it first, allowing me to make insufferable boasts on this and other sites about what a fucking god I am. Not that I'm not a god already. I've actually noticed recently that I can levitate the bookshelf in my room a full four feet in the air by screwing it into the wall. Also, when I barbecue weiners, I generally don't burn them. My powers are growing more impressive with each passing day. Soon, you shall worship me, just as you have worshipped your precious Yaweh. The day of my rule is drawing neigh. Do not fear it.

It's just a stupid contractual thing. ET paid Universal money to get the trailer exclusive, and Access Hollywood got around not having it by actually airing some horrible-quality net trailer. NO ONE CARES! It's just a question of ET blowing their money. It makes no difference to the rest of us: we'll still get to see the trailers VERY shortly after they're finished, cause studios want all the promotion time they can get. The only possible difference is that we'll go back to seeing a good, clean, non-compressed shitty-ass quality trailer first. I have NO problem with that. The net wasn't letting us see trailers that much earlier anyway.
Besides, this whole thing will blow over. It's an argument over who gets to promote the new Psycho, for pete's sake. This is the movie that is going to be remembered, throughout history, as one of the stupidest ideas EVER. I mean, this will break (or should break) MULTIPLE careers. It's going to just do horribly. Really, really badly. Cause what's its audience? People who like Psycho won't want to see this abomination. People who haven't seen Psycho will have no impetus for going. -
hello,
I gotta delurk here to say something. Although I always hated the way people flamed this site via Talk Back, and I never got the idea what the actual reason for their behaviour was,
today I understand them for the first time. I feel really fooled by Harry and his staff when I read this senseless, boring drivel about that trailer and who's fighting who. I suddenly realized to what low this site must have come to when this kind of non-news gets so much space on here. The AICN people must be really, really desperate for news.
Why I won't go into that insulting and name-calling vein which is predominant here on Talk Back, I can now understand why a lot of folks are leaving this sinking ship. How comes theforce.net and even jedinet have so many more scoops about the prequels ? I always thought this site had the best spies contributing. Looks like the tides have turned. I feel sorry for this site, as it decayed from a very nice rumour site to a selling out, egocentric site - with only boring news.
bye forever

those people on ET and Access Hollywood are made from plastic, no really, if you look closely to can see the injection mold scar on their necks
-
you need to go through and delete all the useless demeaning and rancid comments form this list..... PLEASE do us all a favour. I'm tired of reading obscenities disguised as legitimate resonses.

1 foot in yesterday-1 foot in tom.-and you're going to piss all

I beleive that the internet will be our #1 source of info. within the next 5 years. What's wrong with that? It's cost effective, fast and entertaining....So what's everybody griping about? I work in the "biz" and in my opinion the 'net is going to be one of our most valuable tools in regards to marketing...because the "indy's" don't have the marketing budgets that the majors do yet with the 'net they can reach the same target audience. So for the filmmaker out there, we can get a fair shot now at an audience actually seeing our products. So once again, "what's the problem"?

ITS NOT ET's FAULT!! THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE EXCLUSIVIE RIGHT
by cmore
Entartainment TOnight had the exclusive rights. Universal put the trailer on the web and Access Hollywood decided to take it off the web and air it a day before as kind of a snub at ET. Well to me thats dirty ball and H.A. just lost a viewer.

The trailer business: One good thing about premiering on the Internet is that it's can reach a wider audience. In UK we don't get ET (unless you have cable or satellite - which only a few percent do) and Access Hollywood doesn't air at all (as far as I know). Then what about France, Japan, Germany, etc? It's cheap, effective advertising so it's going to continue and if Net premieres can cause this much fuss, all the better for the studios. Feedback: someone up there said Harry should clear up some of the comments in these feedback sessions. I can see why, but that's censorship and I think that's worse, even if we have to put up with crude criticism. I've visited this site for four odd years now and I can't say it's got worse, but I've only read the bits I've been interested in and skipped the rest (which others might have been complaining about). Which I'd say is the best thing about the Internet. And finally, regarding the new Psycho's chances (which I'm completely ambivalent about) it'll probably be a hit. Not a big hit (no big stars, no new shocks), but Gus Van Sant's at the helm and the ad-men have got enough material to ensure a decent opening (look at the exposure they've got so far for it). Most people won't care if it was Hitchcock or not.

Since Harry unceremoniously deleted my previous post on this topic, I will repeat it. *Ahem* I WANT TO FUCK GISELLE FERNANDEZ, THE HOTTIE WHO HOSTS ACCESS HOLLYWOOD, IN THE ASS. Thank you for your time.
-
Well, *ay-hhemmmm* you never will, and also *ay-hemmmmm* you haven't got a worthwhile comment to make, what a pathetic excuse of a man you are. How sad. Keep deleting Harry, this message board should be G rated. Bring on the bleach and watch the fizzle!!!!!!!

Big deal, it was on Access Hollywood before it was on ET. So? Last time I checked theres a little thing called freedom of the press, so AH can show something of the net if they want to.
Why are you such a big ET fan anyway? -
Does anybody other than are supremely out-of-touch host really think that ET "ignored the internet" by not pulling what AH did? Sorry, Harry, I'm not gonna push these news shows to look at the Internet more cause I don't want to promote this site which has become about as quality or independent as ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. ET payed money, AH were jerks, and NOBODY REALLY CARES!!!
For God's sake, the fact that you think you can build up such a stupid, boring issue, and not only present it as "Cool News" but also use it to hype yourself is pathetic. Remember when it used to be about the movies, Harry? Remember when it used to be about "Cool News." Remember when you were the under-financed, poorly HTML script David going against Goliath? That was the charm Harry, and the rose has lost its bloom... -
Is their anyone in the world (aside from the people who report news on the internet) who actually wants to see a preview on the internet first rather than in a movie theater? I don't think so.
This has to be one of the most self-serving bits of "cool news" ever reported on this site. -
if it wasnt for the rude and insulting comments on talk back, i would never visit this stupid site! its the only way i can tolerate a bunch of geeks speculating about a bunch of horrid genre crap.the reviews are god awful. most of the news is about the worst shit you can imagine. harry is way too close to the filmmaker, writers, and effects people to be even remotely objective. the only thing that is mildly entertaining is the insults in talk back.keep the fat jokes coming!!
