Disney's Teaser Trailer For A DAY... Er, I Mean, MEET THE ROBINSONS Is Online Now!!

Published at:  Apr 15, 2006 9:33:01 PM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Well, this took me by surprise a bit. For a while now, starting with this report, we’ve been talking about A DAY WITH WILBUR ROBINSON, an animated SF comedy that the studio’s been developing.

You can see more about it here.

Or here.

Everything I’ve seen so far has been interesting, and I’ve been genuinely looking forward to the film. Now, today, out of the blue, look what shows up in the inbox:

The trailer for Disney's next CG creation, based on the children's book, Meet The Robinsons, is now online.

And you can see it right here.

- Terry_1978

So it looks like they’ve changed the name of the movie, and like it’s starting to come together. I hear John Lasseter has been working closely with the crew on this film and on AMERICAN DOG, making sure that these movies are part of a new era in Disney Feature Animation. I would love to see the company re-establish itself as the single greatest animation unit working, and these first few cross-over films from one regime to the other are all going to be interesting test cases.

Thanks, Terry.

"Moriarty" out.

WOW, THAT'S SOME YUMMY ANIMATION! NICE USE OF EXAGGERATION ESPECIALLY WITH THE VILLAIN'S SWEEPING ARM MOVEMENTS. KIND OF HIRSCHFELD-ISH. (PLEASE NOTICE NO MENTION OF ME BEING YOU-KNOW-WHAT.)

I wonder how much it will be reworked

    by bryan

Supposedly the Pixar people watched the movie and made some suggestions... one of them (allegedly) being to get rid of the villain who we see in this trailer. I guess maybe they didn't like the suggestions, then. Anyway, the trailer doesn't look exciting at all, but I do like William Joyce's art and would like to see it done justice in animation some day. I hope it's good but I'm not holding my breath.

How much time could Lasseter have worked on this?

    by drath

He's only took charge of Disney Animation from the numb nuts in the last few months. I'm sure in the year to come he'll have his hands in it, but I'm not sure how much of this trailer has been influenced by him. Parts seem kind of toned down, but other parts looked as overly kinetic as Chicken Little.

    download it...or why bother?

    by quentintarantado

I tried to download the trailer using the usual hack of looking at the web page source but go.disney.com is smarter than apple.com and I couldn't figure out where the URL was. So I went to movie-list.com and I found the link (thank you) and here it is: http://tinyurl.com/khyou
Am I excited? Not quite. Will reserve judgement till I know more.

    Last Disney Golden Age

    by larry of arabia

It was a slow ramp-up to the last Disney Golden Age. They were spotty after "The Jungle Book" before they went into that bad streak. Then they slowly ramped up. The mostly terrible "The Black Cauldron" had some great animation, then the better "The Great Mouse Detective," the slightly underrated "Oliver and Company." Each was progressively better than the next, and we still had that "Rescuers Down Under" hiccup after "the little Mermaid." Right now it's the bad patch before the new breed comes in.

    Expect some changes

    by timbenzedrine

Reportedly, Lasseter wanted the villian cut (he doesn't appear in the book) and he wanted to bring the story back to something that resembles the source material. Just because it's in this trailer doesn't mean it will be in the final film. They cut stuff from Roger Rabbit that appeared in the early trailers, and they cut and reshot an entire sequence that was featured in the early trailers for Lilo and Stitch because of Sept. 11th. A lot can happen to this film between now and next year, especially since they've changed leadership at Feature Animation. I'll file this one under Wait and See.

    Er, TimBenzedrine...

    by jpdill

... this is CGI animation. It's not so easy to replace stuff that easily.

And the villain's not going anywhere - the film revolves around the two characters conflicting with each other.

If they didn't add the villain, this film would have little story, because the book is more of a picture book.

And Lasseter isn't God. He hasn't got all the control in Disney - they're still making Toy Story 3, even though he wanted to end it.

    Rescuers Down Under

    by bryan

I have to disagree with that statement about Rescuers Down Under. I know it's not as popular as the others because it doesn't have catchy songs, but I think it's a great movie. The elaboration on the workings of the Rescue Aid society, Glen Keane's incredible animation of the giant eagle Marahute, the vivid colors thanks to the first use of the CAPS system, the great villainy of George C. Scott... as much as I like the character animation of the original Rescuers, the sequel is way more fun to watch. It's full of adventure and beauty, some actual humor and it's a rare combination of no songs and not sucky. I guess I'm weird though because The Lion King is easily my least favorite of that era and Rescuers Down Under is possibly my favorite. Anyway, as for the villain of this movie, he looks amusing in small doses here but this does have the feel of a really horrible Saturday morning cartoon level story made to service a few gimmicks. (See the gawd awful Robots, which William Joyce was production designer for, to see the kind of thing I'm talking about.) But like I said, I hope it's good.

    by bunkyboo

CG is not harder to reanimate than drawn animation. Once the characters are modeled, rigged and shaders assigned, the time from reanimating to rerendering a final is much shorter. Don't make statements you know nothing about.

    Disney is DEAD

    by performingmonkey

Well, they're not dead financially, but creatively yes. They're too busy following the lead of others than taking the reins themselves. Who would have thought they were so good once. Now it's shit like Peter Pan 4 and the thousands of deals they have with companies that keeps them going. When they make another good movie let me know. Oh wait...it's never gonna happen. Although Pixar are NOT infallible. Cars might be extremely mediocre.

    subliminal ILM Logo

    by stovetopstuffin'

Did anyone notice the (likely unintentional) subliminal ILM logo? There's a shot of the lightbulb logo in the back of the big boardroom, and then right after that, there is a shot of the evil guy coming through the door with the gear shaped handle. Put the two together and it looks like ILM's old logo of the lightbulb inside the gear. Their new logo isn't the same though

Bryan, Rescuers Down Under is nice, but...

    by timbenzedrine

I really wanted to love that movie. I was a fan of the original, and it was nice to see the production values kicked up more than a notch. The Eagle sequence was beautiful and the title sequence where we track the distress signal halfway around the world was brilliant (Cris Sanders' mice jumping up and down on the keyboard made me laugh) but before too long, the movie settles in and the storyline just becomes average. And George C. Scott, as great an actor as he is, didn't bring very much to his cartoon character. Even his design left a lot to be desired. It was a pretty good characature,But that's the kind of stuff Hanna and Barbera do: Guest stars that look exactly like the celebrity doing the voice. There was a lot of nice character animation in it, though and it was entertaining enough up until the end, but there were a couple of things that bothered me about the ending: one, Bernard left all the animals locked up in their cages, and the final gag, with John Candy when the eggs hatched, were presented as a VOICE OVER--WTF-what is this, radio? animate the gag, please. I have to admit, I left the theatre feeling a little cheated, and I know I shouldn't have because there was a lot to enjoy. But that's the way I am when I watch a Disney film, I expect the animation to be outstanding, but I also expect the storytelling to be first rate as well. Recuers DU was good, but not great, but for a film that isn't great, it's still pretty good.

For the love of god, bring back traditional animation. CG just dosn't have the same charm that 2D does... this film especially would have benefitted from the traditional treatment (just look at that sketch on the trailer page!).
