    by veritasses

Couric was slipping these past few years. Her interviews were getting sloppy, she couldn't keep up with her conversations with Lauer/guests, her jokes/ribbing with Roker/Lauer were flat, she hasn't been transitioning well between segemnts and she was losing her charm and charisma. She might do better just reading off the teleprompter, and I will say that she's among the better female news casters with personality but I can't believe CBS couldn't find someone better. Lauer would've been a better than Couric.

They should leave Scheifer, but they obviously won't. He is a good, old-fashioned newsman, and has, to use an over-used term, gravitas. Couric, on the other hand, is not cut out to be an evening anchor, in my opinion. Her cuteness works well on morning TV, which is essentially a morning TV magazine, ie, light fare. Evening news is more like red meat. Putting her on the evening news comes off like stunt-casting. Schieffer was doing a good job, and Katie is going to cost a lot, yet will not return high dividends, in my opinion.

Ruck got my attention, he's usually better than the material he's given. But say 'Tim Minear', and you've got me to set a Tivo Season Pass, sight unseen. Sounds like a cool premise. When and where can we find it, Herc?

Now, instead of missing out on Couric by not watching the Today show, I'll miss out on her by not watching CBS network news. Of course, I didn't watch either of them before, and won't watch either of them now. But knowing that my life will continue to be Couric-free makes me feel warm inside! I was worried that she'd be the next suprise pulled out of the Jack-Sac on 24... then I'd be forced to watch her.

Would've been nice to see something on City of Men, which aired on Sundance last night. It's a Brazilian TV series by the creators of City of God, with some of the same young actors from the movie. The kids and stories come straight out of the favelas, and like the movie, the first episode was energetic, clever, and difficult to watch.

It's on every Tuesday at 9/8 C - I signed up for Sundance to watch it (and their Asian Cinema Sundays) and it was clearly worth the $4/month.

    by veritasses

I don't think Sheifer wanted the job but Sheifer does have gravitas and that's a powerful presence he brings to the evening news. Even at her most serious moments, Couric doesn't come close. Though that type of charisma/gravitas is pretty rare. Of the males, maybe a couple of the old CNN anchors and one or two of from 60 minutes come to mind. Of the females, the only names I can come up with who might do a good job are Lesley Stahl and Amanpour of CNN (though her accent would be distracting). If the news organizations stopped going only for the cute, perky female eyecandy and looked instead for the serious and intelligent reporters, they might grow some better female anchors with gravitas suitable for the big desk... not that I'm against cute, perky female anchors... and not that cute/perky anchors can't have gravitas/be serious/intelligent, but I haven't seen any yet.

    by mr. profit

Because the Devil Katie Couric (who is really Bob Costas in drag) had a weird hold on America. She was not hot. Was not genuine. And wasn't at all appealing to me. I'll take Dianne Sawyer over Katie anyday. Shit I even like that DL lesbian Robin Roberts a lot more than I like Katie. Couric will flop at CBS news the way Gumbel did. Also Today needs a sexy anchor to replace her. Why not steal Liz Cho from the ABC 6 and 11PM newscasts? Also will Katie now wear the stupid glasses she wears when she's trying to be serious full time?

    The TODAY cast: Self-Important monkies

    by behemoth

These people make me sick. Matt with his "Where in the World Am I" routine, Katie "It's All About Me" Couric, Ann "Phony as a 3-dollar bill" Curry... I'm sick of these news anchors who think they ARE the news. F-youse'all. Couric's "tear-filled" teleprompter read this morning was pathetic. And Ann Curry ... there's an old broad that needs a serious on-air paddling. Wouldn't it be great if one day they all walked outside to do their bit where they're "out amongst the people" and suddenly they realize that they're surrounded by ravenous zombies who devour them live on the air? I credit Couric for raising awareness on certain health issues, but her smug,"I'm still the prom queen" approach will not be missed by me.

I have to give props to Lauer for exposing Tom Cruise for being the total insane f'ed up whack job that he is when no one else had the balls because Tom's an A-list celeb that everyone loves to shower with praise, thinking that some of Tom's magic mojo will rub off onto them. I'd buy tickets to see round #2 of Lauer vs Cruise. Poor Katie Holmes and Scientology's crazy-assed silent birth requirements. re: Couric tanking... she'll probably get an initial burst in the ratings the first few months and maybe get some carry-overs from those that watch the Today Show but then I think she'll slowly slide over time. Though Brian Williams hasn't exactly completely filled Brokaw's shoes yet and ABC isn't really featuring anything high caliber either.

And don't talk to me about Diane Sawyer, that dusty old power-grubbing jealous sanctimonious cunt. She can go fuck herself for all I care.

Meredith whatsername from The View and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is a goddess on the other hand. Totally tolerable, charming, smart, beautiful. She exemplifies the term MILF.

    by mr. profit

Like 6 years ago. She did some event where she was hosed down. I was shopping at The Gap on 42nd and 3rd in NYC when she walked in dripping wet looking to buy new clothes. She was very nice to everyone. But being wet revealed that she has sooooooo many wrinkles on her face. She was almost unrecognizeable. Whoever does her make up needs a fucking Emmy. Because she looks 1 Million times better on camera than she did sans coverup. But she was very sweet and nice to everyone who was staring at her or saying hello. I got no problems with her. She's good at what she does. It would be real funny if ABC does a real fucked up move and gives her a counter offer to be the new host of GMA. And then kill Katie by announcing Diane Sawyer as Peter Jennings replacement effective in May making her the 1st female evening news anchor.

    by incrediburgible

Well, I haven't seen Meredith Viera wet and in person, but I can tell that she's plenty well spackled up and trowled over for the cameras. And I did think "Hmm, she's a bit old to be STARTING OUT on the Today show at this point." She's probably better off staying put. But what the hell. As long as her makeup team can make the move with her, and she stays away from those fire hoses on 42nd Street, she should be fine. Her personality has a powerful beautifying effect on her. Something that Couric and Sawyer lack. (i.e. their personalities have an uglifying effect on them). That WOULD BE FUNNY if Sawyer were installed as the ABC Evening News anchor just for spite. Fuck 'em both. Network news is a sinking ship anyhow. No one watches. That's why these flimsy hags are getting these jobs anyhow: it no longer matters. - - - - Give the job to Sarah Vowell. THEN there'd be a reason to watch the network news again!!!!!

    by neocon

This doesn't really matter. Network newscasts became irrelevant about 10 yrs. ago. It's all about cable and the internet. Her ratings will suck after an early spike because men don't like that phony bitch! Women watch morning shows and men watch evening newscasts. CBS will keep her forever just like they kept Dan Rather forever even though he single handedly sunk CBS News. The ratings were in the toilet for over a decade before he got caught trying to pass off phony documents as news.

    by mr. profit

And I'm biased as a NY'er. Sade Baderinwa is insanely beautiful. Liz Cho is hot. Jodi Appelgate is cute, funny, and does her job well. All 3 can make the move to network news and do well. My wildcard though, who is not "hot" but is a great anchor is channel 11's Sukanya Krishna. She is smart, capable of interviewing anyone, can speak different languages, and has a really funny sense of humor on the low. She is so serious and then says something funny out of nowhere. Like when Cameron Diaz hit her head and it was reported everywhere, she said all serious and with a straight face "Cameron Diaz has a serious Dolor De Cabesa today as she hit her head in her Malibu home."

Univision's Maria Celeste. Who is a well respected Latino journalist who has her own show on NBC owned Telemundo. Maria went on Today one time to promote her book, and Katie asked her stupid questions. And Maria made her feel dumb. Katie had the nerve to bring up the Latin Pop explosion to a woman who is a serious journalist. And anyone who has actually seen her show "Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste" knows that the way Latino's report the news is gritty, real, raw and the way American news should be.

A few problems with Ann Curry

    by veritasses

In many ways, I like Ann Curry the most because she seems to be the most sincere. But as the morning show co-anchor on NBC, she falls a little short. First, if I had to categorize her, she's a bit "somber" in mood as compared to Couric or Natalie Morales (or even Campbell Brown or any of the other MSNBC fill ins for that matter) and people want happy/chipper when they're getting up in the morning. Mind you, it's not like there's a cloud of darkness surrounding her, it's just that it's not that bright and sunny either. Also, she's not a great interviewer... which may stem from the problem that she doesn't seem all that bright and you need someone who's fast on their feet, esp when they're paired up with Lauer who's got a quick wit. I think Natalie Morales is good as the "Ann Curry Replacement" sitting at the news desk and doing occaisional segments. I'm not sure who should sit in Couric's seat. Viera might be 'ok' but I don't think she'll be a great fit for the cast that's already ther eand I think of her more as a 'TV personality' then she is a serious 'newscaster/reporter/journalist'. They might want to give Soledad O'Brian a try. She was there before and she meets all the qualifications.
