THE PROMISE is The Purty, especially in HD Quicktime!!!

Published at:  Mar 24, 2006 7:51:31 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the first of a pair of trailers that just hit Apple's Quicktime site. I was alerted to both of 'em when John Locke popped his head out of the hatch, spat out that orange peel and said, "I have something for you... The journey begins here..." then he ducked back in, saying something about hitting a button. I was left with a weird link.

I found the link to Apple on a mysterious page, blank with a simple octagonal symbol. I saw the trailer for THE PROMISE, a HERO/CROUCHING TIGER lookin' flick that truly showcases the "glorious" part of Glorious Quicktime. It's beautiful. Don't know if there's anything beneath the beauty, but we'll see soon, I'm sure. Here's the trailer, without the long hunt I went on... Damn you, Locke!

    I've seen it

I got the import. It's an okay flick. Not as deep as Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, but pretty good.

It 's a horrible flop in China.Too Western.

    by the true priapic

I'm afraid it's generally regarded as too confusing. It really does make very little sense. And the symbolism used is astonishingly childish, the heroine being made to wear a feather coat while locked in a giant cage only to be rescued by soaring in the wind while the hero runs at a million miles an hour.
I liked it the first time I saw it but was confused by the childishness of the beginning and the slow descent into a minor sex scene and the age old Chinese tragic love triangle of two men fighting over one girl. The acting is good and Cecilian Cheung is absolutely stunning, the soundtrack is terrific but...oh,boy...the special effects for the cgi buffalo/bison that begin the film are pretty cartoonish,as is the manner that our hero is shown running at super speed. He comes from the north, apparently this explains it(?)Certainly who the Princess truly loves is still a fucking concern for this viewer.Huh?Certainly,I'd say watch it and see a whole load of RMB go the way of the dodo.Cecilia Cheung is a pop star,by the way.Like Kylie. But Chinese.I heard her CD and...er....nah,not quite listenable.Like a chicken getting garrotted.By the way,if anyone is desperate to see this film it is readily available here in China on DVD.But don't think this is a taste of what the Chinese regard as a popular film.I have yet to meet anyone who is Chinese with anything positive to say about it.King Kong is more popular. And that's regarded as a joke-movie.

How do you do it? We've only both been posting for a couple of days and you have 2 firsts. I already surf the net 80% of my work day and will probably get fired soon. Please tell me you don't work as to hear you also hold down a job and hit the TB first might crush all my hopes of ever being The One.

Yeah, I think everyone who hasn't had a 'First!'deserves at least one. I haven't been in the position but don't think I could resist. Kind of like, 'would you have sex with some random hot girl if there was no way your gf would find out?'Of course for this I would need first to get a gf, and then a random hot girl... Oh well, best get back to work before I have to add 'and a new job' to the above...

    I have The Promise

    by alucinor11

It was hard to watch because of how convoluted the whole thing is. It is extremely beautiful to be sure, but with so much CG that just isn't that great and things just happening for whatever reason, I came to the conclusion that they should just rename it "STUFF THE MOVIE".

    It's not horrible...

    by wingnut1a

although I do agree with the above posts. I saw this movie at a small screening in Hollywood a couple months back and overall I enjoyed it, but it does have it's shortcomings. Some of the imagery is as beautiful as the best in Hero or House of Flying Daggers, but other parts are SUPER corny. Some of the CGI is really great and other CGI scenes are "cringe-worthy". If you like the genre then definitly see it, but Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger are all better films.

...totally agree with everything said.Especially Cecilia Cheung.Usually lots of make-up makes a pretty girl look horrid but her entrance with all that red and white is...wow.And the girl is just as stunning when out of the pasty-face.Her actual voice is pretty deep and lots of Chines(well, the ones I talk to.)find her voice off-putting.She sing like Minnie Mouse, though!?
