'Every hundred years the forces of evil arise to challenge the forces of good. This is the year, tonight is the night. Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy and Frankenstein have come retrieve a mystical amulet and to rock the balance between good and evil their gruesome way. But they didn't count on The Monster Squad, a group of teenagers who set out to save the world. But at midnight, they won't seem like kids anymore.'

They actually played Monster Squad last fall in Durham, NC. For those of you who live in the Southeast, The Carolina Theatre is one of the coolest places to watch a movie. They have monthy Retro-Fantasma double-features where they play all sorts of giddy nastiness. They also have three different annual film festivals - The Nevermore Gothic and Horror, Escapism, and Movie-A-Thon - which really can't be beat. Everyone should definitely check out www.carolinatheatre.org for more information. While not as cool as the Alamo (I have been there before, too), it's always a good time for a movie geek.

Prob number 2 on my all time fav guilty pleasure list....really really want to see this... If I drove all day and night I could prob make it there and back and only miss one day of class...hmmmmmm

Oh Man, what I wouldnt give to be there. Ive loved this movie since it came out, and over the years it has remained on my top five movies ever, even though its cheesy as hell. I still quote this movie at least once a week. What sucks about this is the DVD will probably never see the light of day due to the fact that noone knows who owns the rights to the home video release of it, so no DVD is in the works. Maybe someone at the screening could ask them about it. Man, I wish I could be there, but I dont have money to fly from NJ to TX for a weekend.

Total classic. Slap "The Goonies" and "The Explorers" in there and it's a perfect 80's kid movie night. They just don't make movie like that anymore.

macgruder I too am upset that there is no official DVD release in site. There are always the two different bootlegs on ebay.

Stupid song... anyway, DAMN, I wished I lived in Austin! Anyway, it'd be worth it just to see all those monsters sucked into a righteous vortex of unforgiving justice (except for Frankenstein... he's so cuuuuute!). But seeing as how the amount of Monster Squad fans equals Wuzzles fans minus Brisco Cunty Jr. fans, they'd be hard pressed to fill that screen full of locals. And I'm not so hardcore I'd spring for a ticket to Austin. You guys at AICN really know how to test a fan's mettle. So, go ahead with your precious reunion screening! I'll just sit back with my Monster Squad VHS tape, which just so happens to have a minute of Bionic Six accidentally taped over in the middle, and Teddy Ruxpin over the end credits (what can I say? I couldn't work a remote back then! I was five!). Peace out [The 80's LIVE AGAIN!].
March 23, 2006, 8:09 a.m. CST
I watched it again recently and there is a definite dark side to the movie - there's Nazi references, marriage problems, brutal killings of minor characters, and a brilliantly disturbing scene where Dracula picks a 5 year old girl up by her throat and calls her a bitch. The tone is uneven in parts, but I really think these darker elements make the film more interesting. You actually feel that the kids are in danger. I said this about The Goonies but it applies even more here - there is no way this movie would be made today in its current form. That's why we have to treasure these little gems, because we won't see their likes again.
March 23, 2006, 8:19 a.m. CST
"My name is (loads shell in shotgun) Harold!" Classic, classic flick for 10-13 year old boys who love monsters. I bought a boot-leg DVD off of eBay and will definitely buy a pristine copy if it ever surfaces.
March 23, 2006, 8:21 a.m. CST
I just live too far away to make this happen. HARRY, can we get pic of this event when it happens? I know many of us would like to see how these guys look now. I used to watch Ryan Lambert on KIDS Incorperated back in the 80's, then he did Monster Squad, and fell off the map. How about some bio's on what these guys do now?
March 23, 2006, 8:23 a.m. CST

God, I loved that movie. Fred Dekker used to delight me in ways that had absolutely nothing to do with my more serious feelings about the horror genre. The guy embraced the iconic monsters, scenarios and cliches of the genre, made them funny and sweet and exciting again long, long before SCREAM and all the cynical post-mod meta-horror of the current day. And goddammit if I still don't get a tiny little lump in my throat every time Phoebe the Feeb throws her stuffed dog to Frankenstein's monster (played by the rockin Tom Noonan!!)... GREAT MOVIE -- congrats to those who will enjoy this big-screen treat!!

I cry like a baby at the end of this Amazing movie. I do...heck, the tears start to well when Frankenstein's monster holds the Collegeville Halloween mask in his massive undead hands, tosses it angrily away and hides his face saying pathetically, "S-Scary?" Oh...I may have to be there for this. Just to see the Aurora glowing goodness of a honest and true Monster film. "Bogus!"

I've been whining and bitching for a Monster Squad screening at the Drafthouse for years. It is my favorite movie from childhood. I was almost going to beg Tim at the Master Class on Monday to show it. Man, I'm going to both screenings.

I would give anything to see this. Monster Squad came out in 1987 when I was in the 7th grade. My small Nebraska town (pop. 3500) theater screened this movie on Halloween night, and anyone who wore a mask to the theater got in free. It is simply one of my fondest childhood memories and a definite watershed moment in my geek evolution. To be packed into a theater full of vampires, monsters, Transformers, He-Men,GI-Joes and numerous comic superheroes on Halloween night, 1987, was a joy unto itself. Then, on top of all that, to be treated to one of the quintessential 80's Halloween/monster movies made this experience an unforgettable pleasure. I'm 32 now, I am married, and I have a 19-month-old son. I have a career, a mortgage and all the other joys and burdens in life that go along with growing up. That being said, I will never outgrow The Monster Squad and I will always cherish the memory of Halloween night, 1987.

A couple months back I was talking up this movie's awesomenitude to one of my friends who hadn't seen it, which resulted in a trip to Scarecrow Video to rent it on VHS. In spite of all my hype, "Wolfman's got nards!" still killed after all these many moons. I need this movie on DVD.

otherwise I would soooo be there. I LOVED this movie growing up and like many others knew the Monster Squad rap at the end by heart. Anyone know of any online petitions to get this on dvd? Every 80's kid movie had a fat kid, but the great thing about Monster Squad is that the fat kid's name was actually "FAT KID." Great writers - very creative. LOL. This still makes me laugh.

Definately the most deserving film to never get a dvd....had to buy a blag on ebay like so many others. Hope whoever it is with the rights pulls their head out of their chocolate starfish long enough to hear the gnashing of teeth. Oh by the way, all of those who manage to get to this screening - you are all completely jammy bastards. I hate you.

"As a matter of fact... I do." Easily one of the most astonishing moments EVER in a fun horror flick, IMO. I remember thinking at the time, "How the hell did they just slip in such a relevant and powerful bit of backstory as the HOLOCAUST in a flick where the mummy and the gillman are chasing kids around a modern town???" Add the horrifying moment when Stephen Macht's partner gets blown to bits... the sweet relationship that develops between Phoebe and Frankenstein's Monster... the B-story about the parents possibly splitting up... Deft, funny, exuberantly genre-bending and genre-raising flick. No shit -- we need a petition for the DVD!!
March 23, 2006, 7:44 p.m. CST
hmmm...let's see...if I take a couple of days off from work...and consider it my birthday gift to myself...one noght in a hotel room, one plane ticket from NY...it has to be done.

March 24, 2006, 9:06 a.m. CST
So, was this movie supposed to be any relation to the old NBC saturday morning show, or was it just an unfortunate coincidence? Ah well, who cares when Wolfman's got nards?
March 24, 2006, 12:20 p.m. CST
Yes, you heard it here first and truthfully. Monster Squad sucked, The Goonies sucked... Even the Monster Squad with Fred Grandy (that I watched when I was kid) was not that great either.

I loved the film, I'd put it up there with Goonies and Explorerers. Good cast of relative unknowns with an appearance by Jason Hervey and the guy who played Lazlo from Real Genius(he was the wolfman)I felt the creature from the Black Lagoon got killed like a bitch, but it was a fun film. Who are you? We're the MONSTER SQUAD!

March 24, 2006, 11:20 p.m. CST
They don't want to let anyone else put it out because they are afraid to let anyone else profit from it more than they would. But at the same time are still considering if it's "worthwhile" to them to put it out on DVD. Hopefully this screening will wake them up.

From Empire interview..... http://tinyurl.com/obvnb Q: So you want to try a different genre? A: I've always gone back and forth. I love science-fiction fantasy. My original script for the Monster Squad is one of my favourite things that I've ever done and I can't even find it. I don't know where it is. I just remember reading it and going 'damn, that's everything I wanted to do!' But right now I've had my fill, a little bit, of private eyes.

That kid who played Eugene has to be invited or it won't be worth having. Don't you want to see him all grown up now 20 years later? And that really funny actor who played his dad and opened the closet and there's the Mummy and Eugene covers his eyes in horror as dad fake screams and Mummy hurries out the window! Eugene must be invited to attend this so must the girl who played Phoebe surely you want to see her all grown up 20 years later. I could go to imdb and look up their names but I'm too darn lazy so I expect one of you other guys to do it!
March 25, 2006, 8:40 p.m. CST
Hell yeah! I gotta find a copy of it so I can rip it to DVD myself! I fuckin' love my Laserdisc player. I can enjoy the REAL Star Wars trilogy on at a decent resolution (ie, much better than VHS shit). Then again, if somebody would bother to put a DVD version out, then maybe I wouldn't have to dig up the LD. Come on you studio asshats, there is SERIOUS demand for this movie on DVD! Wade through the home video rights nightmare and do what it takes to get it out!

Can anyone with Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein on DVD confirm a bit of dialogue for me? It's the part where they're arguing over their dates: "All right, you take Joan and I'll take Sandra." "Oh, Sandra's [something]." "Well then I'll take Joan!" "Joan's [something something]." "Now listen, you [something something something something]" In case you're wondering, this is for j-archive.com. Thanks!
