UPDATED!!! 26 New FUTURAMA Episodes Coming!!

Merrick is perplexed…althought that doesn't take much...

UPDATE: Uber Voice God Billy West, who this weekend indicated that FUTURAMA would return with 26 new episodes, now says that David X. Cohen has bludgeoned him with a correction:

FUTURAMA will not be back with 26 new episodes. But, supposedly, the straight-to-DVD titles originally discussed are still on track.

You can read West's Super-Maintained Blog-o-Matic about this HERE.

What will we do with Morbo? He'd gotten himself all sticky about this news! THANKS to everyone who sent in a heads up about the confusion. Appreciated…

Merrick here, peeking from beneath tattered burlap with a totally fantastic bit of news...

Supercool Voice Articulist (I don’t think 'articulist' is actually a word) Billy West says Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's FUTURAMA will be returning to television in the form of 26 new episodes.

If memory serves, recently announce plans called for the production of 4 straight-to-DVD, feature length installments. Not sure where those plans went, or why the gravitation back to TV is happening instead, but I'll eagerly embrace, fondle, and moistly caress any FUTURAMA I can get.

The original post, from Billy himself, can be found at his website HERE.

But, here's the essence of his message:

I'm thisclose to selling my show Amateur Human Being,''

And the other good news is that they're doing 26 new episodes of ''Futurama'' for TV and we're hammering out the deal now.The original plan was to have the DVD's first but that's no longer the case.I'm totaly jammed dude.

Greetings from the year 3000! It still sucks!

Wonder where these episodes will be shown? Hopefully on Cartoon Network...where they stand a chance of being aired regualrly and actually seen by viewers. Of course, failing to air a series regularly and reliably could never impact that show finding an audience...could it, Fox?

    Very specific scheduling request

    by Sherman_Lives

Cartoon Network, please, if you are the home of the new Futurama series (Season 5?), please schedule it in your Adult Swim block. As opposed to, say, Saturday nights in Justice League Unlimited's old slot. If you think the fanboys were irate at the bumping of that show, just wait until you suspend release of Futurama the same way. No, instead it should be like Robot Chicken or The Boondocks... blast through the season in 26 weeks, then rerun the fuck out of it until there are new episodes. All uncut and with proper act breaks, as opposed to how you currently show Futurama episodes. "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" indeed.

Hopefully, Fox will now treat the show with some freakin' respect. If not, may they bite my shiny white hiney (to paraphrase Bender).

    by emeraldboy

I found Futurama something of a let down. I kind of thought it was flat or something. How many have dared to go up to someone boring and say bite my shiny Metal ass. The episode where Bender iherits the kids is hilarious as is the one with the monkey with the hat.

    GREAT News, Everyone!

    by MCVamp

This will probably be first run on Fox and then repeated on CN like American Dad. I still hate CN and WB for canning Justice League without any good reason, but this soothes a little pain. At its best Futurama was a top-five all-time animated series, perhaps bowing only to the Simpsons and South Park in their absolute primes. Futurama had a great narrative and a solid (if malleable) continuity. I recently tried to put together, in order, the "Destiny of Fry" episodes and was truly entertained. The shows centering around Fry's arrival in the 30th century, the role of Nibbler, and the insanity of being his own grandpa and becoming the Most Important Person in the Universe were truly inspired. Not only that, the characters themselves were given room to breathe, and developed 3-dimensional personalities in the space of 4 seasons, making believable, interesting characters Fry, Leela, Bender, Zoidberg, and even Amy and Hermes ("GREAT GIANT ANTEATER OF SANTA ANITA! THE PROFESSOR'S BEEN EATEN BY GIANT ANTEATERS!") Even lesser characters like Cubert, Kif, Zapp, and the mighty Nibblonians take on a life of their well as Scruffy, never forget Scruffy. This is long-winded, pointless, unsolicited praise for a show that never even got American-Dad-level ratings, but I don't care. If Futurama's back, then score one for...well, for ME. Now if you'll excuse me, Scruffy's gonna die the way he lived.

  • March 19, 2006, 5:55 p.m. CST

    Regularly airing it... on CN?

    by KryptonsLastSon

This about the same network that routinely fucks over Justice League Unlimited? I have never seen a cartoon get less support from a network than JLU... I mean it has to be one of their highest rated shows, or at least their highest quality show, and yet it NEVER gets rerun. And then they pull the shit they pulled last night and don't even show the Supergirl/Legion episode? WTF? But they'll run anime crap like its going out of style constantly.... Now of course they cancel the JLU and make room for more anime.... CN sucks ass.

    Futurama: The Next Generation

    by Sans Souci

Set aboard the Planet Express Ship-D with Jean-Luc Fry, Turanga Deeana, and Benda the Aging Android. Woo-hoo! If Mr. West's assertions turn out to be true, here's hoping they can get the rest of the voice cast back. West is the core of the show, but without DiMaggio, Sagal, LaMarche, Tom, and LaMarr it just wouldn't be trhe same. Hopefully they can get back with Rough Draft too. Be it movie-format or episodic TV, Futurama must come back. Otherwise the future Earth will be destroyed by displeased Omicronians. Futurama! Forever!

    What's really going on...

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

The interested parties are probably susssing out details -- Groening, Fox and the Adult Swim network. I doubt it's a direct to DVD deal they're negotiating -- more likely it's a new series order, with some of the episodes being grouped together to form a direct to DVD "movie." ... As for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim: Adult Swim is not responsible for Justice League. It is under CN's jurisdiction. Adult Swim and CN are considered separate entities that happen to share the same channel. The two divisions are officed in different buildings even.

    by fiester

Let's hope they air on Cartoon Network. Now if only Cartoon Network could somehow find a way to buy the rights to Invader ZIM and convince the creator to finish his originally intended run of 40 shows. Nickelodeon shat all over what was very possibly the most brilliant cartoon ever.

    Doubting Thomas

    by Electric_Monk

Sure, this info come from the star, sure he mentioned the same thing last Sunday at Grand Slam here in Pasedena, but all you people have to throw a wet blanket on the other folks who are happy that the show is coming back. Jebus, you all sound like George W. "Well, when I said we would win the war on terror, I didn't give you a timetable. And you'll get no "official announcment" until Dick Cheney takes his hand out of my ass." Have some faith in what West said. As an actor, they are usually the last to know these things, but I'm sure that he's not blowing sunshine up everyone's ass (except all you fans boys who MUST rain on everyone elses parade. It's like you get off just posting a negative comment).

    by Angry Mean Panda

Billy West has said a lot of things in regards to Futurama that have never, at any point, been backed up by any words from FOX, Cartoon Network, or Matt Groening. The closest thing to any confirmation was in January when Variety ran an article that said they were TALKING about bringing it back in some capacity. So yeah, West is the star of the show, but isn't it a little fucking off that NOBODY WHO ACTUALLY PRODUCES IT has ever said anything publicly?

    26 isn't that unusual

    by Discosis

Trek traditionally does 26 per season. It's the standard episode order of years gone by, until it came down to 22 around 10 years ago, and 20 now if you believe SciFi. 26 is a handy number because it's half a year.

I love this show. Just one slight critisism - it was too 'American'. I know this show is made primarily for American audiences but as a Brit, some shows were unwatchable because of the refrences to American life and TV shows that I just didn't get. For example, who the hell was/is Pauly Shore? I'm pretty sure this is one of the reasons it failed to do so well over here.

No idea who he is. Sorry. Is he some great actor in America? Are there any films I should look out for? Perhaps he has been confined to the more art house type cinema or he prefers to tread the boards playing the major Shakesperian leads. This may be why I have missed him.

    by DigitalDong

Oh its gonna happen, we Futurama geeks know this all too well. Actaully I don't think it was the NFL games itself that pushed it off the air, mostly it was the half hour gameday wrap up with JB, Terry, Howie and whoever was the 4th guy that year. Those guys are comic genius's.

I think last week's TB didn't really have that many posts, so Herc didnt think it was worth it to do another one. But last night's ep was so interesting, so odd and compelling, that I'd like to see some responses and thoughts. While it wasn't a home run (but hell, how many Sopranos eps are these past few seasons), I was fascinated throughout. Featured some fantastic acting by Edie Falco (no surprise)and Robert Iler (certainly a surprise, and wow I wonder if his promise to Tony is gonna pay off)... And I'm not sure where they're going with Vito's character but something is definetly brewing with him, I can't tell if he's becoming a devious presence or what but I like it.

Simpsons has been hit or miss the last few years

    by HypeEndsHere

but i remember the first episode where i formed the opinion: "This is bad" it was the one where they went to Africa. God, that was bad. they haven't all been horrible since, but that one was the turning point for me.

Futurama has been hit or miss.

    by Thumper2k1

Simpsons have been just horrible. I think season 5 has been the last of the great simpsons episodes. The show is on life support now, and everyone is too afraid of pulling the plug. The old episodes were written by people who had things to say, the new ones look like they were written by college stoners. As for futurama. There are moments where it is extremly clever, only to be shat on by stupid sight gags moment ala family guy. I do think there is promise with fturama though.

Sopranos, Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Futurama...

    by vinceklortho

First off, would love to see new episodes of Futurama. Second, I am sad to see that Fox ordered TWO more seasons of The Simpsons and King of the Hill. It's time to bury these two shows. As a rabid Simpsons fan, I've been cringing at the recent episodes. It certainly is tarnishing its stellar reputation with these recent ridiculous episodes. Alright, enough with my Monday pissed off to be at work rant. On to the Sopranos discussion...good to see people actually talking about it becaus it was an interesting episode to say the least. Ironic that last weeks talkback consisted of disagreement over dream sequences and this one had a doozy. Give Edie Falco an Emmy NOW for her performance last night. Any thoughts on Tony's alternate life vision and what some of the imagery meant? The light in the distance? Losing identity? Hell or Heaven?

FOX renewed King of the Hill?!...

    by DanielKurland

First off, I love the show. The characters are very well defined, and it is consistently funny and uplifting too. Now I know some people disagree with this, and that's fine. HOWEVER, FOX has treated KOTH like shit lately, most of this season's episodes are in fact unaired episodes from last season (a la the last season of Futurama), the show receives no promotion, and if anything is pre-empted by Football, KOTH is the one. I've also heard various reports about the "last" episode with a wedding and such, I'm just completely surprised that FOX would renew this (I'm happy they did), because it really seems like they didn't give a shit anymore. They have only aired a handful of new episodes this season as well. Are they THAT starved for programming they need to bring back the shows they hate?

  • March 20, 2006, 2:07 p.m. CST

i've been aware of KotH since the beginning

    by HypeEndsHere

but only over the past few months on FX have I really come to appreciate how smart and consistently funny it is.

Fox just ordered ONE more season of King of the Hill. Fox, however, did order TWO more seasons of the Simpsons, again...

It's a great mystery why people demand the cancellation

    by cookylamoo

of shows they don't want to watch but others do. I don't like Battlestar Galactica, but as far as I'm concerned Sci-Fi can show it as long as they want for the benefit of those who enjoy it. So leave the Simpsons alone. Even if there are only three funny episodes a season, that's OK with me. Jesus, do you want somebody to put you down when you get old and weak?

  • March 20, 2006, 2:55 p.m. CST

I agree: as hit-and-miss Simpsons is...

    by Lenny Nero

...I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't miss it if it was canceled.

Last night's Simpsons was frequently embarrassing

    by chickychow

Had one or two chuckles, but most of the punchlines I winced at. A few of them i couldn't even believe they were selling as jokes. Listen, I'll always have love for the Simpsons but for the love of God its been stinkin somethin terrible as of late.

    Kevin Finnerty

    by sundancekeed

If that's actually how you spell it. Can someone tell me if that name has popped up somewhere before on a Sopranos episode? I racked my brain trying to remember if I'd heard it before and couldn't come up with anything. That being said, I loved last night's episode, while my girlfriend just thought it meandered all over the place. But Tony's dreams are always interesting to me. Possibly dying, possible brain damage and he dreams of an alternate life as a travelling salesman? Still digs the bimbos though. Speaking to a family with obviously younger children over the phone and a wife who is Carmella but is never mentioned by name. But it's the mundane things that felt so sinister. I got a Shining vibe off of Tony in the hotel bar. Weird flashes of light on the city horizon that he was continually drawn to look at. Edie Falco was marvelous. You could actually hear a wife saying those things to a stricken husband. No TV emoting, just honest, stress filled conversation. Robert Iler surprised me. A.J.'s an addled punk but he comes by it honestly. And in the meantime, the crime circle is starting to close in on itself. No honor among thieves and all that. I have a feeling this is going to be right up there with the first season as the ones people talk about when this is all said and done.

No more new episodes of the show... he said there's still hope for a dvd though. I just want to know what the hell happened that such a big error in information was allowed to be released??
