Concept Art For SUPERMAN LIVES
Alrighty folks, Harry here with yet still more cool images of the future. The following was art that was created for SUPERMAN LIVES, the first image is an unknown, I'm not real sure what that is, but the second one is of Superman rescuing Lois from Braniac's ship, something that I've heard is no longer in the film. Bummer. The outfit Supes is wearing is the 'K' armor outfit, in case you're wondering. Enjoy...

These designs strike me as Jean "Moebius" Giraud sketches (perhaps painted over by Brian Stelfreeze). Does anyone know who did 'em?
-
Hearing how Burton abandoned ship, I've gotten the same feeling that I had when I read in Wizard that Schwarzzzenegger was going to be Mr. Freeze... This is going to be another Suckfest that I'm not paying to see in any way, shape, or form...
DAMN YOU WARNER BROS!
BTW, did anybody see Knight Time? It rocked... -
Y'know, I was really happy when I heard that Burton was no longer connected to this film. I've also gotta say, after seeing the costume they were going to go with, I hope they DON'T. Come on, he just ain't Superman without the cape and the trunks. Even as the K-Armor, I could have accepted this costume, but what was with the "S," huh? What's the rationalization for changing THAT? Some people just don't grasp this concept: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
-
Does anyone else think the "S" on the uniform pictured resembles the "s" used in the "Kingdom Come" miniseries?
Also how many of you vote on Harr'y's surveys? I do, all the time. But i would really like it if the Talk Back feature was added to the surveys. Sometimes I want to say more than I can by clicking "yes" or "no". Anybody else? -
hey harry, I have bin reading your stuff, and I am a big fan, I think what you do is way cool man!!!!! screw everyone who think otherwise!!!!
and about Super man Im glad that TImburton is out but I think Nic cage isnt the right man for the job, he cant be superman, though he is a good actor and everything but the fact is that he "AINT SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!" -
The second piece of artwork is signed, anyone recognize the scribe? I do.
-
I think that this film is definately on the right track after ditching Tim "Who Cares if I'm Gothic" Burton. I like the art save the stupid suit. We definately need Richard Donner or Brett Rattner on this project. Richard on one hand would deserve it for delivering us great films year after year and most important of all it would be a little nod from WB that they have a respect for filmmakers who stay with the studio even though they keep delivering crap after crap after crap. He directed the first supes film and since then has had tons of experience so now he will be able to fix any mistakes, if any, from the original film by making the new film. Rattner is an incredibly talented director who delivered a film which most didn't expect to hit thirty million let alone 94.5 in 24 days. I loved Rush Hour and the progression from Money Talks to Rush is incredible. In Money he showed no talent no ability to helm a film. Rush Hour was incredible. I wonder what would happen if he had a great (Kevin Smith's preferably) script and a 90 million dollar budget? But WB doesn't know what they are doing, I think they just are trying to see how fast they can go bankrupt at this point.
-
Almost everybody who has any interest in this movie at all, has built up such a negative view that there just is no point to actually print any news on Superman. Like the new Pyscho, people just aren't open minded enough to just accept that these movies will get made despite their outcries. You know, here is a concept: When these movies actually come out don't rush out to see these films that you predetermined to hate and wait till there are enough reviews from critics and friends to see whether or not it is worth viewing. Jeez, what a concept!

Superman Needs A Traditional Suit...AND HE HAS TO FLY!!!!!!!!!!!
by kingkrypton
First, I'd like to say that (a) Brainiac's ship looks superb--kudos to the artist, whoever he may be!--and (b) WB shouldn't mess with Superman's costume to any great extent. I mean, if they ditch the trunks and jazz up his belt, that's fine. But they shouldn't make radical changes. Superman should be as recognizable as possible. They should keep the overall classic suit and the classic color scheme. I can accept the Eradicator Armor while Superman's powers are knocked out, but when Superman has his powers at the start and finish of the film, he should wear the traditional suit, or a slightly tweaked version thereof. Nothing radically different.
Also, Superman has GOT to fly in this film. I don't care if Peters doesn't like the idea; Superman's flying is the most identifiable and appealing power the character has. -
I'm really glad to see things like this on this site..granted I bitch with the best of them, but I'll give props when they're due, and this is the kind of fun, cool news that makes this site cool..so Harry, Good job getting these images, they're very interesting.
-
Sorry, folks. I accidentally sent my last message before I got to finish it.
As I was saying, I don't care if Peters doesn't like the idea of Superman's flying. SUPERMAN HAS TO FLY. It's the one trait everyone equates with the character, and to have him NOT fly would be just plain stupid. If need be, they can show Superman as a motion blur while flying, as was the case in Kevin Smith's script. But Superman HAS to fly, Otherwise, nobody's gonna buy into this film.
Anyone else agree with me here? -
The Artist's name is Sylvain Despretz. He was an incredible concept artist on "The Fifth Element", "Alien Ressurrection" and "the Avengers". Kick Ass.
-
Hello all I just read a Richard Donner interview which said he would love to do the new movie.
In fact he said if he was involved it would have been made by now. He would keep it loyal to his original movie but update it with a 90's feel. Being a Warner's Brother director he may get the chance now.
He also talked with Chris Reeve about getting the directors cut/special edition of Superman the movie out too after just completing his cuts of the Lethal Weapon's. Later -
My subject heading says it all.
The Kingdom Come "S" doesn't
work, a black costume is not really
needed, the whole death scenario should be done away with and if Burton is gone( he should go back to work on The Dark Knight), then hopefully Nicolas Cage will also leave the project gracefully. We need a fresh start!
What do u think Slave?
Hey Harry, what about my pix? -
Superman was excellent. Superman 2 was excellent. Superman 3 was crap. Superman 4 was crapper still. Superman 5? I think were heading for another Bat Man 4 Superman style. Every eagerly anticipated motion picture I go and see is rubbish.
The only films that are any good these days are those which I see on a whim. eg. Les Miserables and The Interview. I no longer have any time for BlockBusters. -
I know the whole Kevin Smith script thing has been "beat" to the ground. I just read it now, because it looks like it won't be used. I must say that it isn't "that" bad. For there to be a Superman movie at least by the year 2000, which I think there "has" to be, this script needs retooled and used. Get Donner to do it (I love Burton, but Smith's script doesn't suit him). Let's just get this ball rolling. I think you'd have to go out of your way to screw up this movie, when everyone wants it done.
-
I have to agree with the person above... Superman has to fly... Superman flys, that's what he does, that is integral to the character. If anything they should play-up the flying as much as possible and have him in the air or hovering just above ground for most of the movie while in costume. The cartoon does it beautifully and gracefully... so should the movie.
-
sweet. thats all. keep up the awesome work harry.!!!!!!!!!
-
See subject ;)

I would vote for more story over more special effects. It would also make more sense to have a more human villain. All the supervillains trying to take over the world are tiresome. If their technology is so advanced, what would they want with this ass-backwards planet? Any sufficiently advanced civilization would have killer VCR's, so honestly who would rather conquer than watch a movie? A real life Brainiac would spend more time setting up his surround sound than attacking Earth. Your friend, David Geffen.
-
Regarding what Brainiac wrote above: It is true that Kevin Smith *wants* to play Superman, but he's correct that Warner Brothers would rather have a marquee name like Nicolas Cage.
I don't work for Warner Brothers (I work for another studio) but I do have a lot of friends that work there and I've heard a lot of stories. Apparently Kevin Smith really has approached John Peters saying that he is the only one who understands Superman and that he should play him. Originally he was in support of Cage as Superman, but as Cage has made his ideas of the character known, Smith has decided to step in and try to take one the role himself.
From what I've heard, Peters is seriously considering it, but everyone else involved thinks it's crazy. My friend personally witnessed the WB brass bursting into laughter after Smith left the room with his proposal.
Look for a beefed up role for Silent Bob in Dogma, an attempt to demonstrate Smith's range as an actor. If you see Smith in interviews you will see that he has also been working out. He definitely would be a pretty good choice for the role but at this point he just isn't a household name as an actor, and there's no way in hell WB is going to let it happen.
If you ask me, though, he could probably pull off the role as written in his script. I haven't read Gilroy's version of the script, so maybe the characterization is a little different, who knows. But even if it's the same, this is the studio that made Batman and Robin, so don't expect them to make the right decision! -
Since it was announced that Tim Burton was leaving the project, I'm just not as excited anymore. I thought his unique vision would make this film some real eye-candy!
-
They should hire the guy who did Steel, as he has already shown that he can work wonders with a DC comic book character. Man, that movie rocked! And, while everybody's falling over themselves to suggest a new Supes, allow me to offer up the definitive Lois Lane..... Irma P. Hall. That girl got sass to spare, and you know she won't take no back talk from ol' Mr. Luthor.
Mm-hm. -
Superman does fly. The fact that he is disabled through some of the film is a great opportunity to show his human side, and come out with a profound story instead of him just flying around saving people. THAT'S what Superman the comic is about. And oh yeah, maybe they should get Shaq to play Superman, too! Yeah! That would make it "rock" even more! Fuck that. Donner was and always will be the best man to direct a Superman flick and Cage is a chameleon when it comes to attitudes and emotions and could pull off the part beautifully. But about his hair...
-
Hello
These pictures look very familiar
to me...they are from some special
paperback I bought from a french
mail order shop back in 1995.
As soon as I have it, I'll let you
know the exact title on Talk Back.
This brings up the question:
Has Harry been fooled again, or
did they use the paperback as
a concept for production design.
I bet on the first possibility,
as it occurs to me that most
of the 'news' on here is made-up.
It's a pity - I love these pics,
but then again I think they are
too cool to base a Hollywood movie
on them. No average moviegoer
would accept such a Superman. Unfortunately.
-
Okay. This movie's gotten way out of hand. I'm of the opinion that they shouldn't even bother with Kevin's script, because truthfully, it's not that great. It has its moments. But it's not what Superman needs to be. If they want to do ANYthing like this, they should hand it over to Warner Animation, simply because they know how to do it. If they could maintain the visual style that these two images have, this movie would be something.
-
Scott Hall is the one and only choice to play Superman.
-
I don't think that these pictures are from a 1995 paperback... The signature on the 2nd picture is dated '97 !
-
...ahem, or so I was told. Either by a baddie for bad purposes, or as a real core for the re-vamped planet of Krypton.
-
What is this shit about Kevin Smith wanting to play Superman? My little brother said he saw it on E! Entertainment. I thought clerks and chasing amy were the bomb, but if dude thinks he can play Supes.... dude, what the fuck!?!?
Someone's been smokin too much somethin -
I saw the same thing on E! and I could barely believe my eyes. It seemed like a joke - the thought of Smith storming in there wearing the tights and cape. It's so ridiculous. That guy really needs to chill out and take the whole Superman thing a little less seriously.
-
I don't know why everyone's so down on Kevin's script. I thought it was awesome. I think a lot of people just can't appreciate the whole indy vibe, but to me, indy movies are my life. I think the script rules and if you don't like it, you should just stay home and watch barney. I don't know if this is true about kevin wanting to play superman. It sounds kind of weird. but if he thinks he could pull it off I know he could because i have confidence in him. as an artist and aspiring screenwriter myself i know that what he does is really some of the best i have seen since at least pulp fiction.
i'm going to check the view askew board to see if they have mentioned anything about kevin wanting to play superman. By the way if you haven't checked that out it rules, www.viewaskew.com. Sorry to plug another site here, harry! Your site rules too! -
Looking at these reminds of how huge the loss of burton is going to be.Burton is a genius when it comes to art and set design for his movies. These pictures demonstrate what burton was up to and it annoys the hell out of me that I will never get a chance to see burton's vision on the big screen. Warner brothers is too busy trying to sell us toys to make a great film. without burton this movie is going to be batman and robin all over again. i can not understand why you would not want the man who launched the batman franchise to help you create your new superhero, superman, franchise. Warner brothers don't you want to make a hit film.
Superman wore a black suit in the reign of superman comics when he first came back from the dead until he destroyed the cyborg and the war machine. So all you people who want the movie to be faithful to the comic. Burton's vision was faithful to the death of superman comics.
Burton's greatness needs to be seen in superman. bring him back now. people are going to complain whoever is chosen as director. Burton is the only one who can make a great film that in the end will make everyone happy. -
If the script is so bad which it seems to still be why didn't wb get sam hamm who wrote batman to do a draft. here is an experienced comic book film wrtiter and instead they get bass(women films) smith( gen x dramas) strick( bad films) akiv goldman( horrible films). What is wb thinking. Why didn't they at least give sam hamm a shot. That is why this film is doomed wb is clueless. Which they proved for certain when they let burton walk. Burton wanted to make a great superman film while wb wants to hack it. This is why i just can not care any more because the wb doesn't. Get a hack ratner , campbell, donner, bay. who cares i won't spend one dollar. if burton directed i was sure to see it more than once. burton's has shown how comic books can come to life on the screen no one else can equal that.
-
Seeing that he is not slated to be the director any longer... I think Tim Burton would be the obvious choice to play Superman/Clark Kent.
-
the concept art states one thing. Bring burton back now. He is the only one with a clue what to do. WB has no idea what is going on. Look at their last two attempts to continue or make a new franchise. Batman and Robin andThe Avengers. That is not counting Postman, Sphere, and many other bombs. Get Burton back now. Nick Cage, you need Burton. Who else is going to make you look cool in tights. Burton made keaton cool and he can do it for cage. No one else can. Bring burton back.
-
Fuck Kevin Smith! He's had too many fanboys tell them how much they love him. Let him lord it over his teeny l'il comic shop back in suburban New Jersey. Bring back Burton! NOW DAMMIT! Nothing will save this film but bringing back Tim Burton. All you Warner Bros. - bellyachers, complaining how WB can't seem to pull any of their major motion pictures together, always seem to turn to "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin" as your examples of where WB came to a screeching halt. Hmmm? Let's see . . . what's missing from these two Bat-flicks? Could it be Tim Burton's direction (and Michael Keaton, of course)? Burton is key to the success of WB's comic themed films. Warner Bros. should wake up and start noticing their mistake! Of course, Burton's skipping out on Superman will hasten the release date of the so-cool-it-hurts "Legend of Sleepy Hollow." So maybe it's a trade-off I can live with. But I too, had my heart set on a slightly goth-Supes directed by Burton. If anyone has productions designs for Burton's Fortress of Solitude or Metropolis, I'd love to see 'em myself. TTFN.
-
Okay. First of all, I really don't think Jon Peters is as bad as Kevin Smith says he is. After all, he's the only person who's said such things about Mr. Peters. I think he's just mad that they didn't go with his, in my opinion, bad script so he figured, "Ah, I'll just make him look bad." And now he's saying he wants to play Superman? What the hell makes him so damned in tuned with the character? Oooh, he grew up on Superman comics? Yippie ki yay! I grew up on Superman too, and I think I know the character pretty well, but that doesn't mean I'm the only person for the role. Kevin, stick to the comedy, man. Let go of Supes.
-
Why does no one agree that this should be set in either the 40s or 50s, like the Fleisher cartoons? Who wants Donner's Superman all over again? Sorry, but been-there-done-that. I think I am the only person on the planet who thinks the Cohen Brothers are perfect for this project (go see The Hudsucker Proxy). As for Kevin Smith playing Supes - WHAT THE HELL?!? If that fanboy hits the gym and gets a facelift, then maybe he'll have a chance! And then hell will freeze over. Nic Cage is a good actor, but he is not right for this part. Please pick an unknown! As for the villian, it's got to be Lex Luthor. Several actors have been suggested on Talk Back, but I have one I haven't seen yet: Gary Oldman. When does this guy not enhance a movie?
-
If Supes does not fly in this film, mark my words, the FILM will not fly. I know I won't watch it if he doesn't.
-
I am a huge superman fan. I would like to say that, as great as these photos are, they go with the Kevin Smith script, rather than the dan gilroy script. They are clearly part of the "eradicator suit" idea that Kevin introduced.
To read Kevin's script (and prove that I'M right), go to
http://members.tripod.com/~Shokwave32/movies.html
It's in the news section near the bottom -
Matt Damon in anything looks good to me.
-
To you folks whining about his costume. He does have the traditional costume until he dies, if they stick with the eradicator plot when he's resucitated he's wearing that suit. He loses his powers for a while because of what happened. Being deprived of his power source. The whole stroy is supposed to be about him getting back to what he was and dealing with mortality and why he does what he doea. Even without his powers he performs heroic acts.
At the begininng and at the end we have the classic Superman, in the middle is Superman's road back to his life as it was.
So yeah the costume will be different, much like it was in the
"Death Of Superman" (going on the theory that they still follow that storyline" And he would probably lose his powers... Then emerge triumphant at the end as the SUprman we all love.
So in that light I find the pictures exciting.
-
Hello everyone. I just stumbled on to this web site and was reading all this stuff about Superman and a new movie. Can anyone send something to me or reply back with where I can read more about the upcoming movie. And also what's the deal with Superman not flying, is that true. If that's the case, the movie will stink...it will be worse then batman and etc. Superman has been recognized for years as the man of steel who can fly faster then a speeding bullet. If you take that away from him, not many people will like him anymore. Why would you want to be superman if you cant fly. Oh well, just somthing for you to think about, but please if you can send me the url's about this movie and stuff, i would greatly appreciate it.
Buh-bye!
-
Burton needs to return to superman if wb wants to launch its new franchises and not destroyed another superhero.
Burton has shown he has the ability to create a stunning and believeable setting while creating an unbelievably cool character. Batman was built upon burton's genius and destroyed by wb's hacks. Burton's design and storytelling talent make him an ideal choice to tell the tale of the man of steel. Get a grip wb, you can not do it without burton. Burton must direct superman or wb will have another flop.
-
Why not do an animated film based on this artwork? By the way, don't you think Lance Henricksen would make a great voice for an animated Batman?
-
I am not a huge fan of tim burton. But he has the eye, the know how to make great comic book films. He is not an action director so he cares about the characters and develops them while stilling creating cool action sequences. burton has great style so he makes great costumes, art direction. and his movies look like comic books they are so cool. what did donner's superman or any of his films look like, epidsodes of lois and clark were cooler and that is not saying much. Bay has never cared about telling a story only cares about explosions. Has bay every done a seen that is more than thirty seconds long. Ratner has not made a good movie yet. There is nothing in rush hour that screams superman. why is it a surprise success because no one thought it was that good. martin campbell has made two okay action films but nothing in them even closely resembles the vision needed for superman. Burton is the man.burton has the talent to make superman fly.
-
For those of you confused by the drawing of Supes in the black suit - that's the costume he wore in the comics when he came back from the dead. Ditto to the person who said Lance Hendrickson would be a great Batman's voice in an animated movie.
-
The picture is really cool, but how do i know that hairy didnt draw that! i have a web page with the same stuff, and people ask me how do i know that this is all a bunch of crap? all i wanna know is, where the hell did you get this stuff from?
-
Supes HAS to have shoulder-length hair on the film....he just has to. Black suit too. Why?? We do not want a mainstream, squeaky-clean "Adventures of Superman", clean-as-spit Superman like they portrayed on the 50's television show, the Richad Donner films, and even more recently, the Lois & Clark sow (Oh God, Help!!!) Anyway, we want him portrayed as a huge, muscle-bound tough guy with a soft heart type of deal. If he has the short-butch cut hair and the ALL-American red and blue suit, then audiences will think "Oh, I know Superman! I grew up with him as a boy in the 50's! He's a neat hero! Unrealistic but I like it! He's as American as Apple-pie!" Do we want people who know nothing of comics to have this impression that what they see on TV and from the 80's-skinny-lanky Reeves-Superman to be the same as what we read in comics? NO! They wil all think we are cheeseballs! I loved it when Batman came out and slapped those types in the face with a darker, black-suited, tough-guy, take-no-crap, violence-laden Batman! That is what we need to see with Supes! And speaking of which, bring back the Dark Knight's cameo to the movie, and Buton for that matter! Tim knows about pained heres and their vengeful/responsible lives!
-
I haven't read any script about this movie, and I don't plan to! I say dump Cage as Supes/Kent. Superman needs to be buff, and Cage is NOT that! Although, Supes has to look casual, not super handsome or something. I say, if Vince Vaughan could get a little buff, he'd be good for the role. Although, there are plenty of others possible, but I really can't think of any that fully fit the bill. Personally, Christopher Reeve was the best Superman, but unfortunately, he's not able to reprise that role. Now, I just read at Dark Horizons that Burton is going to do a remake of the Wizard of Oz, but that Martin Campbell ("The Mask of Zorro") is pushing for the director's seat in this one. If Luthor is going to be in it, if not Gene Hackman, then perhaps John Shea or John Malkovich. Shea was good in the TV series, but not the supervillian we all know. Malkovich plays good villians and he also has the bald thing going, but I'm not too sure about him being Luthor. Although, Patrick Stewart would be a VERY good choice as he is a great actor, has the Luthor baldness, and can do evil rather well. Now, for a flipside of things, I think Alec Baldwin would be good as Batman/Bruce Wayne in whatever Batman movie would happen next. I really don't know about who should be Lois, but it should be someone who has talent and is not just some marquee name with little to no talent at all. Also, I think Lane Smith played a good Perry White in the TV series. Well, that's all I've got to say at this time. -NJM
-
We don't want a 50's Superman? Well, I do, and so do plenty of other posters. Sure, lets give Supes long hair and a black costume...while we're at it, why don't we make Metropolis a trailer park? Yeah! Then we could cast the film entirely with pro-wrestlers! $hit!!! WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS BEFORE. GOD, I'M A GENIUS...
Thanks for the inspiration, Spankowski, I'll get started on that script today! -
from what I understand, is a piece of crap. The Death of Superman stank. Doomsday stank. I heard that not much of Smith's script is remaining, and all of his dialogue is gone. Well, to be honest, his dialogue was the only think going for his freakin' script! Why change the uniform -- is that as original as they get? Polar Bears guarding the FOS? I just don't get these guys. THIS IS A BLATANT DEMONSTRATION OF THE LACK OF CREATIVITY GOING ON AT THE EXECUTIVE LEVEL OF WARNER BROS. FIRE THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM AND SAVE YOUR STUDIO WHILE YOU CAN!!! All these guys have to do is tap the shoulder of one of the writers for the Animated Series, but they're too stupid to look in their own backyard. You may think, oh, that show's too kiddie-oriented. But these guys write thought-provoking, edgy stories. Case in point, "The Late Mr. Kent" -- As Clark Kent rushes to save an innocent man from dying in the gas chamber, he is involved in an auto accident and thought to be dead. But the eyewitness is unreliable, allowing Clark to emerge and find the man who should truly be in the gas chamber -- Detective Kurt Bowman. Or the AMAZING "The World's Finest" with Batman and Superman (which is packaged as a straight-to-video release, for those who want to check it out.) Both beat the Smith script hands down.
-
I know fashion is in the eye of the beholder, but I gotta say, Superman with long hair is completely cheeseball. We might as well give him sunglasses, an electric guitar, a skateboard and some Converse. Wouldn't that make him "cool" too?
I'm glad that Paul Dini and company chose to go with the traditional short haired Superman on the animated series. I would have a hard time taking him seriously with a Billy Ray Cyrus cut like poor Nightwing has to deal with.
Superman *should* be clean cut and All American in appearance. That doesn't mean the movie has to be. I think the never-to-exist Burton movie would have been great with a classic Superman in a fucked up world. But give the guy an earring or something in a failed attempt to be hip, and you've got a problem.
-
Harry? Have you ever read a Superman comic? Not just seen the crappy movies and cartoons? See, Braniac is this bad guy, who starred in one of the comic's most pivotal stories of the last decade "Panic In The Sky". In it, Braniac attacked Metropolis in a big skull shaped ship. it's gets mentioned about every other month or so. Maybe you should check it out. Then you'd find out about why people are excited about a new Superman movie. You'd also find Superman's supporting cast, which is one of the best in comics, and I'm not talking about just Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane. Please, if you're going to pretend to be a Superman fan, try to do a better job of it...
-
THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO SUCK! Nick cage?! give me a fucking break. No Tim Burton!? This is going to be a piece of shit, two-bit, Captain America-esque load of garbage. I'm just hoping X-Men will save the comic book/movie genre from what seems to be iminent extinction. Lord knows the Batman franchise wont do it.
-
Tim Burton - Good riddance. Go make another stop motion kiddie film.
Kevin Smith - Your "Superman" script sucked and I think you're overatted. You're not the only fucker who "understands the Superman mythos."
Jon Peters - Let the franchise go to someone else. Don't turn "Superman" into a "Batman" film; we don't want another superhero to be a bit player in his own film, surrounded by too many villains. -
Burton is gone? (back to the bat-cave I hope), let's get rid of
Cage and Kevin Smith and start again. Let's do away with the whole
black suit/death-reborn scenario,
boycott any suspicious directors and bring the "real " SUPERMAN back to the big screen.
We need input from comic-book
writers, especially Superman writers, which begs me to ask the question - DO ANY OF U PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ SUPERMAN COMICS? HAS ANYONE OUT THERE EVER READ A COMIC BOOK AT ALL? Of course the first picture is of BRAINIAC'S SHIP! If any of u read Superman, you'd already know that!
Nic Cage is a fine actor, but he can't play SUPERMAN because he's Italian-American! No disrespect but,
neither Clark Kent, Kal-El nor Superman are Italian-Americans.
Would u cast Jackie Chan as BATMAN? or Tyra Banks as WONDERWOMAN?
Kevin Smith's movies are fun and very enjoyable from a comic fan's point of view, but his "Death of Superman" ideas are not what we need, let alone letting him play The Man of Steel. We need Patrick Warburton or an unknown with the same physique and on-screen presence that Patrick has.
3 choices for Lois Lane - TEA LEONI, VANESSA MARCIL or MARISKA HARGITAY.

I think we geeks have given Kevin Smith too much of an ego based on questionable talent. I think its time to realise that were dealing withsome who has yet to prove he can run with the big dogs (its one thing to direct a $200,000 film its a new ball game when youre at the 90 million mark.)
I mean Kevin smith as superman whats Next Alanis Morreste as lois Lane Alan Dershowitz (Who Kevin Smith owes his enitre carrer to) as perry white?
P.S. Just because you throw in references about supes in a crappy film does not mean you qualified to direct one. -
Burton has proven with the batman films that he knows how to adapt a comic book character into a cool, successful movie. Who else has done that? Burton would make one kick butt great movie. I have no interest in seeing a generic superman movie. If you want that watch lois and clark on tnt or rent superman 1 and 2. I want a superman movie faithful to the comics which blows you away visually. Burton is the director for year 2000 superman. WB, peters, cage wake up and get burton back because you need burton.
-
I do not want donner directing superman.these people who want donner back to mess up superman, have you seen all his films. I am talking Radio flyers, assassins, conspiracy theory, Lethal weapon3, the toy, scrooged. All those films were garbage. Hack give me my pay check evil pieces of trash. And for radio flyers and assassins the guy got 10 mill to direct the lame turkeys. No more. Lethal weapon was a cool movie but he has not made one since. The sequels were okay or in lw3's case awful. His superman movie is so boring and lame. The villians are campy bad, the story is slow, and it has no style no coolness, the look of the movie is so lame , so generic action movie not superman not metropolis but new york city. Forget bay, campbell, ratner, and smith. Burton was the right choice to direct but he left. No we are going to get superman 4 as a result. these movie demands a direct like burton not some generic action director who will do everything wb tells him to do . why would anyone listen to wb they have proven they have no clue. Burton created the batman franchise and wb ruined it with schumachler garbage. wb don't ruin superman get burton.

I don't know why people refer to this movie as if it was a continuation of Donner's Superman. I don't think it's intended to be that at all. I am dissapointed with Warner Bros. efforts in getting this movie on track. This is officially a Frankenstein project, and I doubt that anything good can come of this. What needs to happen is that the studio executives need to pick a director, and then back the hell off. But please, pick a director who knows how to make a classic. Not Michael Bay (who only lasts five minutes)and definitely NOT Schumaker (he already had his chance). Give this to someone who has a vision. Burton had one, but the
@$$holes over at WB would not give him creative control. I don't blame him for walking. Without Burton, I don't want Nic Cage as Superman. Forget the quirky Superman -- toss him and that piece of crap script out the window. And for all those "comic-book" fans out there: Your damn straight. I don't read the Superman comic books anymore. Why? Because they suck. Because they gave Superman long hair, and turned him into a 90's-kind-of-guy-candy-@$$. I liked what Superman WAS. I liked the innocence and purity of the early comic books. Leave the psychos, murderers and vigilantes to Batman, where they belong. -
Okay, folks, I'm a Superman fanatic. The first movie was the second movie I remember seeing in my lifetime (Star Wars being the first). I've been reading the comics for almost 15 years now. I know this character inside and out. And let me tell you, Nick Cage is not Supes. I hate the crap he was spouting about 'Superman being Everyman'. BS. Now, as for Smith being Superman....? Well I love Kevin Smith. I loved his script, I love his movies. However, I can't see him as Superman either. However, the idea of an unknown or lesser known actor in the role appeals to me. I mean, who had heard of Chistopher Reeve before the first film? The best Idea I've heard so far is from Wizard Magazine a few years back on their 'Casting Call' for a hypothetical JLA movie. Bruce Campell. He's got the build, he's got the chin. Heck, he's actually got a full head of hair! And he knows how to play a hero. Well, enough from me, i'll just go back to lamenting the idiocy of Warners.

I don't think Brett Rattner is the guy to direct Superman Lives either (and WB is obviously interested in him because he just had a hit movie - they probably haven't even wondered what he would do with the project).
But shit, lay off the guy. Rush Hour and Money Talks are great little movies. Money Talks is the perfect Chris Tucker vehicle, and Rush Hour does a great job of balancing a Tucker movie and a Chan movie. Rattner doesn't have a unique vision like someone like Burton (yet, anyway) but he's very adept for a new director, especially for music video directors turned action movie directors. (I won't lump all video directors together since David Fincher and Alex Proyas are both a lot better than him).
I like the look of Rattner's films, I like the way he shoots action - the car chase in Money Talks was part of what made me think he would be right for Rush Hour. And I especially like that he gets Lalo Shifrin to do '70s style scores for his movies.
And though both of these films are formula commercial films on the surface, they both have a bit of subversion going on. I like how Rush Hour takes the "cop who plays by his own rules" cliche and turns him into a jackass. In Lethal Weapon, Mel Gibson is supposed to be cool for going too far - in Rush Hour, the chief is making fun of our hero when he says "Every once in a while, we have to blow some shit up."
Money Talks is similar in the way it takes the white guy and his crazy black buddy formula and turns it on his head. For once, it's shown from the point of view of the black man, and the white guy is a complete ass who you're not even supposed to like until the very end (although I had a hard time liking him then, too). It lives up to the tag line, "This ain't no buddy movie."
He's not a Tim Burton and I don't think he has shown anything interesting he could bring to Superman Lives, but in my mind he's definitely not some tasteless hack or a Bruckheimer action-genre-destroyer like Michael Bay or Simon West. I guess that makes me an idiot in the mind of the above poster, so now is probably not the best time to admit that if they decided to fuck the Superman mythos and cast Chris Tucker as Supes, I would be running to the theater right now to camp out.

Burton created one of the must profitable franchises in history with batman. The one film without any involvement without burton was a disaster. Burton has the imagination, abiltiy to take a comic book character and create a fascinating character and stunning world. Superman does not call for michael bay and his thirty second cuts, or donner's by the numbers action, or ratner, or campbell.
Superman screams for a director with the vision. A director who knows how to make metropolis look cool, how to make superman act and look, how to give heart to characters, and how to di action. Tim burton can do all that and more.
WB what is wrong with you. Burton created your last franchise, trust him again. -
To create a great superman movie is going to require great imagination and Creativity. Burton has it. Donner, Bay, Campbell, and Ratner don't. Burton is the man to direct Superman

Excuse mis-spellings etc...didn't have time to check it. WB has a goldmine in it's hands, and it can be hot baby! They need to pull together everything they've got to make this one movie the biggest kickasser of all. I'm talking about something so huge it would pass ID4, MIB and the rest, and single-handedly save Warners' reputation. Here's my thoughts: Get Tim Burton back in an Executive Producer type of capacity. Take his advise, feedback, and whatever else. For Director get Simon West (Con Air), he could do it great! Keep Nic Cage as Superman (he really can do it I swear). Take Gilroy's script, and get David S Goyer (Dark City and Blade) to work on it. In the end get a script doctor to punch it up if need be. Get a good gothic, noirish, but bright Cinematographer and Art Director (think Men In Black maybe for Sets etc). As for Brainiac, I don't give a crap. WHoever. Billy Zane and many others come to mind as Luther. He needs to be somewhat good-looking, evil, and dashing all at the same time (and he doesn't need to be bald). Lois Lane is critical, and Cortney Cox sounded kind of groovy, as did Venessa Marcil. Sandra Bullock isn't tough enough. Perry White and Jimmy Olsen are easy, whatever. Music: Get Danny Elfman, and let him use John Williams theme from the originals. That would be cool. As for the look and feel of the whole thing? Let's try a hip 90s Supes with Traditional under-pininggs. Make the whole look of the film bright yet dark, every-day, yet somewhat futuristic. Make it be serious, with some comic relief and kickass action. Don't make it R or PG, try a PG-13 (no sex-anything, nudity, or F-words, just violence). And I hat eto say this but make a kickass SOundtrack (with equel Music and songs). I now it sounds like it's cashing it, but I dig that. The guy who was Cinematographer for Face/Off just him me...and WTH, make Richard Donnor a Producer too. Pull together to top-talent WB, you can do it, and it will be worth it. Excuse mis-spellings etc...didn't have time to check it.

I for one, am glad to know that Tim Burton's gotten the heave-ho. I had no interest in his plans for a "darker, more murderous" Superman. WB should realize that upholding tradition is important when doing a film like this, and with Burton, tradition was just going to be disregarded and replaced with sick, twisted garbage. Superman doesn't need a "dark and Goth" treatment. He needs to be treated as he is. I agree that the character should be updated to some extent, but there's a difference between updating Superman with respect to the source material (as they do on the WB cartoon) and totally screwing the character up just to make him suit an egomaniacal hack's personal filmmaking agenda (as Burton tried to do). The public wants to see a classic Superman film, not some warped and weird piece of trash. Novelist/screenwriter/director Nicholas Meyer has demonstrated that he can handle established properties with fidelity to the source material (STAR TREKs II and VI, THE SEVEN-PERCENT SOLUTION< TIME AFTER TIME). I think he would be the perfect writer/director for a Superman film franchise. In this way, comic book fans would be satisfied because Meyer would be faithful to the source material, and everyday filmgoers would be satisfied because they'd get a chance to see Superman as they remember him from the previous TV shows and films. In short, Meyer would make a film worthy of the name "Superman." Forget Burton and his "darker, more murderous" junk. Get Meyer on Superman!!!!

I have a friend who works out on the left coast, and she tells me that at least 4 scripts were handed in around the same time. Because of the rush to find a director, the script on top of the pile was picked. The script by Gilroy is said to rank in the lower half of the 4 scripts. One of these supposed scripts dealt nothing with the "Death of" scenario and was supposedly the best of the bunch. But because of the lack of the "Death" theme, it was tossed aside without even reading it. If anyone knows if this (or any of the new) script(s) is on the web, please send me the address. Thank you.

I heard a rumour long time ago that Paul Gross of 'Due South' fame was to play Superman which I thought was a brilliant idea. I mean if you look at it his character from Due South is an overgrown boyscout (he plays a Canadien Mountie) which is not very different from a description of Superman. So I was wondering if there was any truth in it and if not then it should at least be considered.

The "S" on Superman's chest is THE most widely recognisable symbol of Americana (Mickey Mouse ears comes in a close second) known. Rest-assured that WHEN this movie gets made, the traditional suit and cape will be there for most of the film. And, as a screenwriter myself..the "death of" scenario, IF done like it was in the comics can play out very nicely. The most recognised symbol of Americana deserves only the best.

Superman will be played by a relatively unknown actor named Brandon Routh, who is too tall and lanky for the roll. Bryan Singer will end up making the film. They will fuck up the costume by making it blue, maroon and gold. In the movie, Superman turns out to have a son by Lois Lane, who is now involved with another man. Kevin Spacey will play Lex Luthor. The movie will be boring as shit, making only about $200 million domestic. It will almost destroy the franchise, until it is handed off the Chris Nolan of Batman the Dark Knight fame.
