A look at the SUPERNOVA ship

Published at:  Oct 11, 1998 3:06:55 PM CDT

We haven't really been getting a lot of info on SUPERNOVA, it's kinda been under wraps. We know Digital Domain has been doing a lot of work, we know that Nimziki fella that Emmerich and Devlin... ummm don't like is behind it. We know that Walter Hill, a very very cool director from time to time is in charge. We know that Angela Basset, Lou Diamond Phillips, James Spader and Robert Forster are on board. We know the web site is right HERE. And there are a few pics there. But here's what the ship will look like...

    This looks promising...

    by brian

This ship looks promising. Yeah, it has a bit of the Omega class destroyer of B5. But beyond that, it looks like the ship was designed to look functional. All those lines and cables, plus that crescent shaped array (some sort of dish, maybe?) all make it look like the form of the ship was based on the function of the ship. Who knows, maybe we'll even see her follow the laws of newtonian motion? - Brian

Am I the only Event Horizon fan

    by gag halfrunt

Personally, I'm really looking forward to Supernova. Once you get past the fact that it's not scientifically credible, then it starts to sound like a pretty cool film. It's got a bit of Event Horizon in the plot, which I think can only be a good thing. And now I'm coming to the reason for this post, irrelevent though it may be to this story...So many people out there seem to regard Event Horizon as a benchmark for bad sci-fi, which I think is just plain unfair. It's a damn fine movie. The direction is first rate. The special effects, especially when you remember that they were achieved on a limited budget, are mind-blowing. And there are quite a few scenes that are damn scary. OK, so it's not the most realistic movie around, but hell, it beats the pants off the god-awful Alien Resurrection, and is far superior to the likes of The Abyss and Sphere. If Supernova is well directed and scary, while still managing to keep the adrenalin flowing, then we could be in for a real treat. If only they made an Event Horizon sequel though. Now that would be a dream come true. It'll probably never happen, though.

    more crap on Event Horizon

    by priceman

Sure, the flick had great special effects, astounding visuals and sound. Now if it only had a coherent script and an original plot ... Event Horizon ranks right up there with Stargate as one of the movies I hated most for wasting two hours of my life.

    EH disappointing, not horrible

    by admiral pain

I have to agree with BurritoBoy, in that Event Horizon, much like Stargate, had a rather incoherent plot.
To, me, these two movies had very good premises, but only briefly grazed the really amazing/disturbing implications they could have inspired.
F/X wise, EH was top-notch; I have nothing to complain in that area. But the whole Hell/Other-Dimension idea was watered down in favour of typical (and VERY cliche) horror cheap tricks.
Come on, you have to admit it most of the 'cool' scenes have been ripped genre classics such as Alien(s), Hellraiser (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8) and The Shining.
Actually, the plot seems to have been plagiarized from an early 80s movie about an abandonned and haunted nazi cargo-boat called "The Boat".
But the movie could have been good, if only they had gone into the really disturbing stuff. The best scene, the only one that scared me, was when the capt. (L. Fishburne) was talking to one of his men about the Latin-satanic sounding message they had received. THAT is real horror; overuse of the-hand-on-the-shoulder-scare isn't.
Watching the movie, I felt like too many details of the plot were missing; later one, I heard rumours that many plot-oriented scenes had been cut. If this is true, it's really a shame, because I'm sure it would have made the movie more intense, instead of turning it into the silly cheap-scares/gore-fest it has become.

2010: Odyssey 2. Oh, and Event Horizon (again)

    by gag halfrunt

Someone said the ship looked like the Leonov from 2010. Damn right! That also reminded me of another great-and-unfairly-underrated sci-fi movie...2010 rocks! Those special effects are from 1982? They look brand new. And the oh-so-cool way that David Bowman reappears to his widow. I still feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I think about it!How come so many great sci-fi movies are ridiculed when they come out? 2010 and Event Horizon are, for my money, among the best of the genre. But it's the dross like Deep Impact and Alien Resurrection that make the money. Pretty unfair. Still, you want to know what I think will be the ultimate sci-fi movie? David Fincher's up and coming version of Arthur C. Clarkes "Rendezvous with Rama". Any sci-fi nerd will tell you it has all the ingredients of a classic. Roll on summer 2000...

    Warning: Bad Science Ahead!

    by buxley

Ok, I admit, the ship artwork looks very cool, but the coolest ship design in the world won't save a script mired in Bad Science.

I visited the Supernova web site and the tiny snippet of storyline they gave seemed to confuse the concept of "star system" and "galaxy". Either that, or thay can detect emergency signals originating from "a distant galaxy".

*sigh* Why don't these people ever have someone with at least a modicum of technological savvy review their scripts?

    Event Horizon was fantastic

    by bushkieman

I love event horizon, i own it and watch it weekly. I only wish that we could see that 20-40 minutes of footage that was cut out. I garuntee that it was some nasty shit. I guess we'll never know.

    Re: Event Horizon

    by patrick

Most of the sci-fi films in this decade suck, so it's no wonder people are professing their love for 'Event Horizon'. Consider it a form of psychological disorder: great-sci-fi-film withdrawl.

As a previous poster mentioned, Stargate and Event Horizon are pretty similar. Great PREMISE and great PROMISE--but these films fall apart halfway through.

In StarGate, the first part of the film (we'll call 'Pre-Gate') rocks. The second park (we'll call 'Post-Gate') blows. Event Horizon suffers from the same problems.

Both are basically B movies disguised as A movies.

    Patrick

PS: [Note to filmmakers: please abstain from passing your film through any gate, portal, or other tunnel-like device. Your film may be irrevocably damaged.]

    Alright, Event Horizon sucked

    by dehayd

I don't know why this forum turned into a discussion of Event Horizon, but so be it. EH was a lousy, predictable movie. When Paul Anderson said the idea of a haunted house movie in space was original, I figured he just hadn't seen Alien. Then, when he proceeded to rip it off, I knew what was going on. It was a bad science fiction movie, and worse, it wasn't even scary.
