On set report on MAN ON THE MOON

Published at:  Oct 09, 1998 3:07:44 AM CDT

Here's a brief set report on the past week of shooting on MAN ON THE MOON, the next Milos Forman biographlick starring Jim Carrey as the man the legend. But enough of that, this unblood tested fool has a report for us all, so here he goes...

First time writer here. I was on the set of Man on the Moon this week and I
think it's going to be a hit. Jim Carrey plays Andy Kaufman and he is
really
into the role, everyone on set calls him "Andy" and even down to his set
chair. While I was on set at Universal they were filming a very dramatic
scene about the short lived show "Friday's", I even remember it even though
I
was only about 11 at the time it aired. The scene had Jim, I mean Andy in a
scene on the "Friday's" show where he comes out acting stoned, but before
the
scene can develope he tells the other actors that he can't act stoned and
Norm
MacDonald, very cool guy by the way, walks off set and grabs the Q cards
from
the Q card girl and throws them in "Andy's" face and Andy retaliates with a
glass of water. I think Norm's character is supposed to be "Kramer" from
Seinfeld, anyway the ABC director enters the scene and a very violent and
dramatic fight scene commences! It was a very impressive perfromance by
everyone! Then an announcement is made by the show's producer saying it was
all just a "happening" and Andy has to make an apology to the tv audience
that
leads to him being fired from "Fridays" and from there I know nothing except
that I think I'll pay 7 dollars to see the moive, I think it's gonna be one
of
Carrie's best films to date, he is a comedian, but the man is a very
talented
actor and y'all should see this movie!!!!! If you use this Harry, just

call
me "MaCreedy".

    Carrey me away!!!

    by sith witch

Alright everyone!, What I want to know is: How can a tall, gangly, goofy actor (Carrey) possibly play a short, squat, dwarvish character (Andy Kaufman). I have been unable to believe this ever since I first heard about it. I mean, I will see it (even though I cannot STAND Jim Carrey) just because I think Kaufman was so interesting. But how are they trying to pass him off this way? Are they using the old, or should I say "new" technique of Hobbitron 2000 technology being used on the Lord of the Rings movie (digitally shrinking actors)? Anyone have a clue? P.S.-When his Carrey going to fade away into reclusive millionaire oblivion? Sorry if you like his comedy.

    Part II

    by sith witch

Just a note about the above post: I was not being sarcastic in the last sentence, I was just pre-apologizing in order to stem off the furious retorts of Carrey-ites....

    Norm as Kramer?

    by doughboy

So does this mean Norm is actually playing Michael Richards? The reason I ask is because I heard that Norm is supposed to play a rival comedian at a comedy club or a talk show or something of that nature. Personally, I kinda wish they had gotten the real Richards to play himself since they're doing that with just about everybody else(except for DeVito and Pig Vomit). Oh well, Norm still rules. Go to hell, Don Ohlenmeyer!

    Andy vs. Lawler

    by jobber

I can't believe the media is falling for Kaufman vs. Lawler all over again. you'd think 15 years later, they'd know better.

    Friday's

    by jonzer

yeh, wow. I remember Friday's. that was like a big deal when I was 9-10 to stay up and watch that show. I remember Michael Richards (Kramer) but not Kaufman being on that show.. I also remember they did a few scits involving smoking pot that were pretty funny, even though I had no idea what pot was at the time.. that's killer they got a top-notch director like Milos Foreman on this thing. this is going to be a good movie..

    Kaufman/Richards on "Friday's"

    by crowtrbt

In the documentary mentioned above, Michaeal Richards explained that he was in on the joke, and he and Kaufman were both co-conspirators, as it were. The plan was to go out and, unbeknowest to the other actors in the scene, Andy would break character and say he couldn't go on. This stunned the other actors (Richards feined it). To compund the joke, Richards, on the fly, gets up from the table and walks over, grabs the cue cards, and tosses them on the table in front of Kaufman. While this is going on, the other actors are getting pissed of at Kaufman, and yelling and screaming begins as the director walks over, obviously pissed. Kaufman tossess the water and I believe one of the actresses crams a dish of butter on his head. Fisticuffs break out between Kaufman and the director. Quite a disasterous (though funny) outcome for what amounted to an on-air practical joke, and classic Kaufman.

    Fridays and Andy Homepage

    by inwosuxred

I have most(if not all) Andy stuff from Fridays on tape. Andy hosted one show and later came back to appologize and did a thing where he was a born again Christian type thing and sang gospel songs with his "wife". Andy was never a cast member, but much like SNL, Andy was on the show more than once.

I think Norm is as good of a choice as anyone. Richards really doesn't look much like he used to, and I think he might be too distracting now that everyone realizes he is Kramer. Back then he was a nobody.

As far as the "fight" goes, Richards seemed to suggest he was "in on it" on one of the Kaufman specials they sometimes show on Comedy Central.

    Everyone should check out the
    Andy Homepage at:
    http://andykaufman.jvlnet.com/
The Fridays story is told there in pretty good detail, as well as other incidents like the Lawler fued, Letterman appearance, and some stand-up bits.
