Will Ferrell's TALLADEGA NIGHTS screens!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with yet another test screening review, this time for Will Ferrell's TALLADEGA NIGHTS, from the team that brought you ANCHORMAN as the TV Spots will surely soon be saying. I'm lookin' forward to this one and it sounds like they're on the right track. Gary Cole sounds great, in particular. The below review is only semi-spoilerish. Nothing major, but enough to slap a spoiler tag on it. Keep in mind that this review comes from a test screening. Comedies are especially vulnerable to the testing process as the timing has to be so precise in order to work, so keep that in your noggin' as you read. Enjoy the review!

Hello AICN,

Went to the a test screening last night of the new Will Ferrell/Adam McKay/Judd Apatow comedy TALLADEGA NIGHTS (that's the title that appeared on screen; no mention of a BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY). The movie stars Ferrell as NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby who lives by the credo "If you ain't first, you're last," John C. Reilly as Ricky's teammate, a good-hearted man who is nevertheless getting sick of second-place finishes and Sacha Baron Cohen as a gay Frenchman who hopes to find a worthy racing rival in Ricky Bobby.

The movie's plot has the same structure as other sports movies like ROCKY III, BLUE CRUSH and, yes, DAYS OF THUNDER where an athlete soars to great heights very quickly, then gets beaten or injured, sinks to depths never before imagined only to find a new trainer, work really hard and eventually claim his or her rightful place atop the sporting scene's highest mountain top. TALLADEGA NIGHTS hits all of these story beats, but also tweaks or sends them up making it feel kind of like an elongated SOUTH PARK episode. Things don't descend into a ZAZ-like parody thanks to some rather dark humor ("My Grandma's turning 80 this year. What should I get her for her birthday?" "A coffin.") and a highly charismatic cast.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have great chemistry and do nice riffs on good ol' boys. Farrell isn't quite as over the top as the trailer led me to believe which I liked. Definitely dialed down from ANCHORMAN. Sacha Baron Cohen's character is a combination of Borat and Bruno (which I didn't think was possible). He has one great scene where he threatens to break Ferrell's arm, but after that he isn't really given much to do. And that, unfortunately is a problem that afflicts the rest of the giant cast. There are too many actors and not enough material to go around. So, what you end up with are people like Michael Clarke Duncan and Amy Adams getting one really funny scene then disappearing for the rest of the movie. At least they fare better than Andy Richter and David Koechner who literally have nothing to do and maybe 120 seconds of combined screentime. Three cheers for Gary Cole, though, as Ricky's self-destructive, alcoholic father who shows up to retrain Ricky how to drive. A Reese Bobby he owns every scene he is in (hell, even scenes he isn't in) and conclusively answers the question, "Is there anything Gary Cole can't do?" (That would be no.)

The cut our audience saw ran a little under two hours and slowed down in the middle, especially during scenes where the actors were improvising and the filmmakers just left everything in, I suspect, to see what a laugh and what didn't. That stuff should be trimmed considerably.

The story beats and character arcs in TALLADEGA NIGHTS, while visible from miles away, are well-executed and satisfying. That said, it is a silly Will Ferrell comedy and won't hook you emotionally in the same way that THE 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN did. Still, I liked it better than ANCHORMAN.

Endearingly Yours,

Living Tribunal

    Ferrell's other film?

    by theBigE

Anyone hear anything about Ferrell's other film out right now? The one with Ed Harris? It must really suck if it's getting no national mention.

  • March 2, 2006, 9:51 p.m. CST

    Can't wait

    by Bean_

Ferrel is hilarious, don't care what anyone says.

  • March 2, 2006, 9:55 p.m. CST

Didn't care for the trailer too much...

    by vinceklortho

But, will nonetheless see this. I hope there is a nice 80's training montage that Will has to undergo to get back to the top of his game. I can see this suffering a bit from cameo overload. So Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Ben Stiller don't show up in this? Heaven forbid! Me likes Amy Adams, though! Hope she plucks the Oscar this weekend.

    Will Farrell = shittiness

    by Cruel_Kingdom

And hey, second, or third, or whatever. Who cares?

  • March 2, 2006, 9:58 p.m. CST

Hopefully this "film" will be better than...

    by Cruel_Kingdom

Farrell's last foray into the sports film, Kicking and Screaming. That movie blew more than Rod Stewart drunk at a party.

    SUPER DUPER!

    by calami-shami

i cant wait for this film. I was dragged to nASScar races when i was younger by my parents. Their still into autoracing and this will be perfect for them. Now I get to drag them to this. HA. Ferrel should do a comedic spoof of North by Northwest. I dont know why, he just should. I also think every movie he does from now on should have at least one scene where he smacks Jack Black with a burrito. I dont know why.

  • March 2, 2006, 10:10 p.m. CST

Right as everyone exchanges high fives...

    by vinceklortho

let's freeze frame it and maybe put some nice theme music to it a la Saved by the Bell.

Ferral has done to many bad movies for me to be excited

    by blackstormy

He should never of done kicking and screaming and bewitched. I was an immediate fan when I first saw the SNL skit "GET OFF THE SHED!!" but he has oversaturated the market and has become too big. I see him becoming a chevy chase or steve gutenburg which is sad because he had such potential with Oldschool and Anchorman, and Melinda and Melinda was good.

  • March 2, 2006, 10:30 p.m. CST

    RE:Blackstormy

    by Hunter-X

That was the first time I saw Will Ferrell too. I thought the skit was going to fall flat and then he starting going crazy at those damn kids on the shed!! Classic.. And, I have a good feeling about "Talladega Nights". I'm there.

A freaking painful and pathetic movie. The 1st half was somewhat humorous, but it dragged for miles after. This reviewer is a fucktard. Anyone who holds 40YOV up on a pedestal AGAINST Anchorman is just plain Stupid. GOd i hate people.

I like when Ferrell does movie like this

    by Orionsangels

I don't like normal ferrell. the family comedy ferrell. I like when he plays characters. who exist in their own world and everyone has funny names. like anchorman

  • March 3, 2006, 3:05 a.m. CST

    40 year old was funny

    by Orionsangels

because the entire cast were characters and movies like these have moments, like when the black guy is showing a customer an HDTV and a bug appears on screen. they both get stardled, haha. the manager lady who tells dirty stories. the hindu guys. the fat kid who wants to buy the glam boots, haha. when the virgin can't figure out the condoms, haha. i could go on and on. its funny moments like this that stick with you and make it a classic, like anchorman. tits magee haha. not dodgeball. thats not funny, plus steve carrell plays it straight and i love his screams haha. remember in achorman when brick has the grenade and ron says where did you get that brick? brick says, i don't know, haha. thats funny to me. it's a kinda fuck you to the other style of comedy. anything goes. i threw triton, haha yeah i saw that. brick killed a guy, haha. thats humor to me. its just weird and outta place. i love that. things that make no sense, haha

  • March 3, 2006, 3:22 a.m. CST

    Anchorman sucked IMO

    by clockpolitiks

I know its just a different taste thing. It sounds like most of you who liked anchorman didnt like the 40 year old virgin. I actually hated anchorman the first time I saw it. I think the only part I laughed at was when Jack Black showed up. Other than that, the movie seemed very childish and stupid. Some of the jokes in the 40 year old virgin were childish and stupid as well, but it had a way better story, and better characters. It was also funny as hell. I like virgin even better than wedding crashers, which I found to be really funny, but the 40 year old virgin was more clever.

  • March 3, 2006, 9:53 a.m. CST

you cant argue with a film

    by misnomer

The 1 reason see Talladega Nights: Spider-Man 3 Teaser

    by AnimeJune

That's the ONLY reason. I'm fond of Will Ferrell, in my way, and Anchorman was good (but 40-Year-Old Virgin was a million times better), but racing movies have never appealed to me. However, it might almost be worth to $10 ticket price to be able to go in and see the premiere of the teaser trailer for Spider-Man 3.

  • March 3, 2006, 11:41 a.m. CST

    you'd pay $10 to see a commercial!?!

Saw this movie -- it was terrible

    by Doc_McCoy

I was at the test screening. This movie is like all of the unfunny parts in Anchorman only worse. Heavy editing -- both removing scenes and tightening the ones that exist -- will surely help, but don't get your hopes up.

  • March 3, 2006, 12:28 p.m. CST

also, suspense/horror films are made in editing NOT

    by HypeEndsHere

comedy. comedy is in timing (as any armchair comedian knows). what they don't know is that the timing is in the PERFORMANCE. not manufactured in a dark room with no audience. the Marx Bros did test screenings. live and in front of an audience. before they started shooting.

    Spiderman 3 teaser???

    by vinceklortho

How did you find that out? It says that this Will Ferrell "vehicle"(pun intended..hahahaha) won't be coming out until August? Did they really say that they were releasing a teaser five months in advance? Either way, I'm psyched about that prospect. Could possibly be the best teaser ever.

I said I'd ALMOST spend $10 just to see the Spider-Man 3 teaser. ALMOST. Still - the trailer does make the movie seem somewhat entertaining: "Lord baby Jesus, thank you for my beautiful boys, Walker and Texas Ranger..." Ha ha ha. And John C. Reilly is a good actor, but I had to watch "Chicago" three times to get the taste of "Never Been Kissed" out of my mouth. If this movie tanks, he's going to have to win an Oscar, or at least a Golden Globe, to bleach off that stain.

I think, if he really wants to do something that is challenging, and shit faced funny- he should do the film "Confederacy of Dunces". I went to film school(Now I'm getting a masters in "Medieval History- go figure) with the kid who has been signed on to direct. David is a genius and this film could be the real deal for Will Farrell.
