Detour!! Herc Loves Tuesday's Two-Hour Premiere of THE AMAZING RACE!!
Season nine returns us to 11 teams of two, and tonight’s highly entertaining season premiere introduces us to one of the best crop of contestants to date. It’s easy enough to imagine America warming immediately to “THE FROSTIES” (Lisa & Joni), two six-foot middle-aged bottle-blonde Texas sisters who can’t stop screaming like ninnies, and often for no obvious reason. They certainly had me laughing despite myself. Other standouts:
* “THE PINK GIRLS” (Danielle & Dani), a pair of undersized but supercute recent college grads from Staten island.
* “THE FRAT BOYS” (Eric & Jeremy). Formerly a pair of college track stars, they’ve gone on to careers as a waiter and a valet and take an immediate interest in The Pink Girls.
* “THE HIPPIES” (BJ & Tyler), a pair of doofy longhairs from San Francisco who immediately establish themselves as perhaps the biggest threat in the race.
* “THE NERDS” (David & Lori). We know they’re nerds because this relentlessly cheerful couple can never stop calling themselves “the nerds.” Hailing from Kansas and dating for three years, he’s really an underground musician and she’s an assistant manager at a Pizza Hut.
* “THE HOMOSEXUALS” (John & Scott). Both from Massachusetts, they say they’re only friends, but you’ll meet few just-friend couples who hold hands quite this much.
* “THE TAMALES” (Wanda & Desiree). An adorable Puerto Rican Gilmore Girls: mom’s got the Spanish accent and works as a corporate trainer in Georgia; daughter is the all-American writer living in New York.
There are also two more dating couples (one black, one white) and two married couples (one married 40 years, the other 12). Meet the entire cast here.
I liked tonight’s two-hour premiere so much I’ve already watched it twice! CBS was good enough to leave the ending intact on the screener, so I can tell you that the initial leg is an elimination round, and a couple of the teams I thought would do most poorly don’t finish badly at all.
9 p.m. Tuesday. CBS.
