Tung Piu... 'Uncle Bill' has left Jackie Chan's stage forever...
Hey folks, Harry here... Uncle Bill is gone. Hong Kong movie fans are bowing their heads for a moment of silence for Tung Piu. I've been a huge fan of Jackie Chan's films since the early early 90s when I finally got to see them. Prior to that, I knew Jackie from only CANNONBALL RUN, but when I came to Austin in 1989, once I graduated High School... I began almost instantly checking out screenings of Jackie Chan films from time to time at Hogg Auditorium on the University of Texas campus. Honestly, I never knew Tung Piu's name, I just knew him as Uncle Bill. And I was always delighted to see him in other films of Jackie's like DRUNKEN MASTER II, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX and all the POLICE STORY films. His hang dog expressions and hilarious shit-eating grin. He just always lit up the screen and lightened a scene by his mere presence. The concept that he'll never again appear in a new Jackie Chan film is tragic. It's time to put on POLICE STORY II, I feel.
Hi Harry, Mori n Quint,
I'm one of your readers & I just read this from monkey
peaches. Tung Piu whom we usually watch acting as
Jackie's chief in his films died at the age 73.It's a
sad day for me as I've known him not just from JC's
movies but from his TV series as well.
If you use this you can call me Han
Hong Kong actor Tung Piu (Bill Tung) died yesterday of
lung failure. In fact, acting was only a hobby of his
and his life was closely related to horses. Born at a
Hong Kong stable in 1933, Tung Piu began to ride at 9
and became a jockey at 12. Like his father and
grandfather, he was also an excellent horse trainer.
In 1967, Tung began hosting horse-race shows for local
TV and radio stations. In the 1970, he began taking
cameo roles in film and TV series and by late 1990s he
had appeared in over 60 movies and hundreds hours of
TV shows. The police chiefs in Jackie Chan's Project A
sequel and Police Story series were the most
noticeable roles he played.
