On Set Report on Martin Scorsese's latest BRINGING OUT THE DEAD

Published at:  Oct 06, 1998 12:13:03 AM CDT

Harry here. Here’s a set report on BRINGING OUT THE DEAD. I can add a bit
more to this report. You see the screenplay that Scorsese is working from was written by
Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ). Well, Paul’s been
down here in Austin at the Heart of Texas Writer’s Conference, and I saw a few panels
with him in attendance. He told this one story about how Scorsese had put in all these
religious overtones and subtext. He looked at Martin and told him, to think about that for
a bit, wasn’t he still in enough trouble from his last temptation on that side of things. Well
when Schrader began writing he wiped away all the religious stuff, and focused on the
story at hand. Also he apparently had to play good cop/ bad cop with Scorsese, because
Cage was being a bit difficult at one stage of rehearsals. But everything was ironed out.
Well now... onto the report...

October 2nd

I was walking back to my car from Swing-46 (a swing music bar/lounge) in
NYC tonight, and when I got back there was a film crew on the corner of
46th and 9th avenue. They were filming Martin Scorcese's new film Bringing
Out The Dead starring Nick Cage, Tom Sizemoore and John Goodman. John and
Nick play ambulance drivers. This scene was where theys saw some hookers
while they were driving on the corner, and Nick's character constantly has
flashbacks of people who died after he tried to save them. All the hookers
looked like one girl that Died. They turned the corner to look like a slum
where there were deserted cars, flaming barrels, etc...

The entire film is being shot in the Hell's Kithcen district of NYC.

October 3rd

After another trip to Swing-46, they were finishing shooting for this
sequence tonight. I met someone who has an independant film show on local
access in NY, and he got some great footage. Hopefully I will be able to
provide some pictures for you. It was the same scene again, John Goodman
and Nick Cage driving in the ambulance by the Hookers on the corner. Mark
Anthony is also in the cast.

As the shooting was winding down, the man himself (Martin Scorcese) was
walking past me, and I could not resist saying "The man himself". He
responded with a very friendly hello, a nod, a smile, and a wave. He is the
man!!

Hey Harry.......put down that pork chop and stop letting people jerk off online by making up stories. Instead, I propose you do your job and just keep updating us about THE PHANTOM MENACE and other real movie news. You are seriously letting this place slide into DARK HORIZONS territory. When can we expect AINT-IT-COOL-MOVIE DIALOGUE TRIVIA? Stoopid jerk.......more Star Wars, less CRAP.

  • Listen people. I take it none of you are from NYC. They took over a one block section from 45th to 46th on 10th Avenue.

They had the cops there to control traffic when they would actually film. They had crew drive around in cars, all old and shitty following the propped up ambulance that was being pulled by a truck. The ambulance/truck would drive down to 11th avenue, turn left, and would then reappear coming back down 10th avenue.

They started to film at about 1:30am/2:00am for the two days. When I met the guy with the video camera, he said they had also done some day shots. The crew tried to stop him filming, started getting snotty, and a cop told them that he has every right to film it, (i.e. public street).

What the hell would I have to lie about? Around 2:45am-3:00am they stopped filming. I was parked on 45th street. They crew trucks were parked on the right side of 45th between 9th and 10th, I was on the left side. Martin was walking torwards the trailers with his onterage, and all I could say was "The man himself". He said hello, smiled, and waved. Very nicely.

One more note: There is a deli on the corner on 46th and 10th. i was getting some coffee and there were crew members in there. After asking many crew members what company was releaseing it, they all said Disney. They also commented on how the Disney jet was waiting for Nick Cage at the airport.

I live on 43rd b/w 10 and 11th and was walking home from work yesterday afternoon and stumbled on the whole "DEAD" film crew prepping the night's shoot on 43rd b/w 9th and 10th...i hung out for a little bit and then walked back over later that nite around midnite...The man himself was prepping a really complicated shot involving John Goodman (who looks quite dashing in his EMT white uniform). They still hadn't shot a thing by the time i left an hour later, though I did get to take a photo with Goodman and got him to sign my LD copy of Raising Arizona...i'm going to go back tonite and see if I can get Nic to add his John Hancock to that LD and i'll be a happy boy!!
