A Total Tease Of A Review For De Palma's BLACK DAHLIA!!

Published at:  Feb 21, 2006 7:09:47 PM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Oh, man, does this review give me the blue balls something fierce. I want to see a great new De Palma film this year, and this is one of the first reactions I’ve seen to the film, which must be test-screening at the moment. It’s short, so be aware that this isn’t meant to be some comprehensive overview of the film. Instead, it’s just a taste of what we might expect to see later this year:

Hey -

Got to see an early preview of THE BLACK DAHLIA the other night and man was I impressed. Haven't been a fan of DePalma's since RAISING CAIN (HIGHLY underrated if you ask me) but our boy is back: same cool slow tracking shots from UNTOUCHABLES and DRESSED TO KILL, some great fucking performances from the 'new Hollywood' (alas I do miss Nancy Allen) and surprisingly the same kinda great twisted and moody storytelling techniques we haven't seen since SISTERS.

Don't wanna spoil anything but there is some very steamy threeway shit goin down between Scarlett Johansen, Aaron Eckhart and Josh Hartnett here. Totally erotic - even kinky and I pray they don't cut that shit out for sake of ratings cuz it was quite diggable.
Gotta say though that the real shocker here was Hilary Swank - playing the ultimate femme fatale - she's almost unrecognizable at first: long flowing hair and voluptious bod - she's giving us TOTAL vixen and man does it work!

Come awards time next year - this one'll be in there. I predict right now that Josh (the Monkey) Friedman will be winning for best adaptation - just incredible work.
No idea when this comes out but thank God they're still making cool dark stuff like this.

Best...Smarty

If anyone else out there saw this screening and you want to send us a more complete reaction, I’m dying to hear all about it.

"Moriarty" out.

the blog of josh friedman, the BLACK DAHLIA screenwriter is just great. his whole blog should be turned into a weird little animation-life action feature with monkeys, zookeepers and tinseltown in it's full glory. this guy rules. can imagine, that his scipt does too. It'd would be a real treat to anticipate and finally see a good De Palma...

The cop finds a sleazy Mexican bar where they show stag films and her and this other chick are doing a guy. (I seem to remember him dressed as the devil?) Lets hope this is another LA Confidential. Mia Kirshner looks a lot like the girl too. Its eerie.

    by chickychow

..its directed by Brian DePalma. The last time I checked, he totally sucked as a filmmaker. Please, save your "but Carrie was good..." and your "But what about Body Double..." Those movies, while okay, are nowhere near as good as some ppl seem to think. Most of this guy's filmography is a fuckin travesty. (the Rebecca Romijn bathroom sequence in Femme Fatale he gets points for, just cuz thats about the best lesbo kiss in Hollywood history)

    by zikade zarathos

... but I just don't get it. I mean, I REALLY don't get it. And I'm perfectly fine not getting it, since I hate damn near everything he's ever done. Can anyone really tell me specifically why MISSION TO MARS is anything but absolute crap without resorting to Armond White-esque, hyperbolic rants about hipster critics not 'getting it'? SISTERS is OK, but c'mon people....

    Another solid Ellroy adaptation?

    by mrekoletmelive

Could it be possible? Has the man himself really seen the film and liked it? If so, my expectations for this film just raised a notch or two. I admit, I would have flipped if they cast Ron Rifkin as Ellis Loew in the Dahlia movie so there could be a continuity between it and LA Confidential, but what're ya gonna do. I guess I'll remain guardidly optimistic until I can see a trailer. I'm a big fan of early DePalma and would love to see him return to some prominence.

    DePalma's cool, but Aaron Eckhart?

    by freakemovie

He's been in more flops than, well, Hilary Swank. The ads for this film should say "Eckhart and Swank...reunited for the first time since The Core". They're fine actors, but it doesn't bode well for business though. Johanssen and Hartnett are both pretty solid, though. Looking forward to it. By the way, as for the De Palma debate: I saw Mission to Mars when I was still a pre-teen and thought it was the shit. Sure I would notice how silly it is now, but at the time, it was darn fun. Just that kind of movie. But Untouchables is classic, c'mon. Mission: Impossible: great movie. The list goes on.

Mission To Mars: pretty good until that lame ass endin

    by vinceklortho

cut me off...but "endin" sounds more "edgier". Was pretty decent Sci-fi until the "discovery". I think you are either a huge DePalma fan or you just don't care about him...the man is a complete miss for me with a few good hits. Scarface is one of the most overrated movies in history(I'll take the flaming..who really likes Scarface besides rappers?)Blow Out is a poor man's Conversation and lest not forgot that he directed Bonfire of the Vanities. Did anyone like Casualties of War too?

    by cruel_kingdom

Hilary Swank has been nominated for two Oscars. You make her sound like Freddie Prinze Jr. or someone halfassed like that. As for Eckhart, have you seen IN THE COMPANY OF MEN? Yes, both actors have had their share of bombs, but they are both good actors. You can't dispute that. Since when do we, the cineastes, give a crap about box office numbers? Many good movies bomb and many bad movies are hits (i.e., PINK PANTER). Just an observation, bro.

Femme Fatale was an awesome, underrated return to form for De Palma, and I'm foaming at the mouth for The Black Dahlia (although Mark Isham's replacing James Horner on the music? What happened to the days when De Palma would get the likes of Bernard Herrmann or Pino Donaggio to score his films?). And M2M is De Palma's worst film, although the screenplay was so terrible, it's hard to blame him. Expanded DVD cut of Casualties Of War coming in April..!

I was commenting on the potential box office success, not whether the movie will be good or not. I just found it funny that two actors who starred in a flop and have both made a string of flops are now starring in another movie together. I agree they're both good actors. All four of them are, so I have high hopes personally.

Okay, I'll say it. DePalma "rules", "owns," etc.

    by vern

I mean I understand he's not for everybody, but the guy is a master. Very stylish with his carefully designed camera movements and splitscreen showoffery, a genius at manipulating an audience and piling up the tension, and he has a perverse sense of humor. Somebody was writing off Mission:Impossible but that's a great example of DePalma using his skills to make a really exceptional hollywood summer popcorn type of movie. If you tell me the scene where he lowered himself into the silent room didn't blow you away the first time you saw it, I will call you a liar to your face. Liar. I mean I don't like every single movie he's done, and I never saw the Mars movie, but the list of his good ones is pretty damn long. Sisters, Body Double, Carrie... somebody mentioned Carlito's Way which I love but what about its older brother Scarface, man? You're gonna tell me Scarface is not good? I agree with the guy who said Raising Cain was underrated. I never saw that one until a year or two ago but I was so glad when I did. It's completely crazy and plays with the audience with all these hilarious red herrings. My favorite is all the foreshadowing that somebody is going to be impaled on the sundial in the back of a truck - and then it doesn't happen! Femme Fatale is in the same vein, it's the ultimate DePalma movie with every one of his obsessions and tricks multiplied by a thousand. Not many people are able to make one of their best movies that late in their career, so I have complete faith in this Black Dahlia. DePalma is DeMan.

The MPAA doesn't like it up the ass

    by godoffireinhell

so if the threeway involves a dick in Scarlett's pooper it'll get cut. But maybe if both dicks snuggle up in her vagina or if she's blowing Aaron while taking it from behind from Josh it might get away with an R. Damn, writing this got me hard.

Chalk me up as another who never really got DePalma

    by reverendz

Love Scarface but really it was a terrific script by Stone. Can you imagine if Stone would have directed? Untouchables should be retitled the Unwatchables. Aside from Connerys performance, this movie was a drag. Casting Kevin Kostner in the lead didn't help. And let's face it, DePalma has ripped off everybody. Every other movie he does is a remake and he steals shots and sequences from other films. I dunno, I guess when it comes down to it, I think he is a competent director who gets way more acclaim than he deserves.

If you can make a Travolta movie watchable (Blow Out), you deserve an honorary Oscar. Untouchables was awesome. "You got him?" "Yeah I got him." "Take him." Anyone who disagrees well don't make me deal with you the Chicahhhgo way.

I've got plenty of love for Scarface...

    by ranson

But Carlito's Way has always been a more powerful film to me. It has an elegance and maturity to it I don't see in Scarface, and while I'm not knocking Tony, I prefer Carlito as a character. It's much easier for me to sympathize with and be endeared to him. The climax of Scarface is classic, but the final chase in Carlito's Way blows me away everytime in a way no sequence in Scarface ever did. Just my feelings on it.

i remember watching it when i was younger. i tuned in just a little after it started, and i was like 'phantom of the opera? this is too fucked up to be phantom of the opera'. it was so fucked up i couldn't stop watching. good or bad? i don't remember. but if i look for 1 movie to sum up depalma for me, its the untouchables. connery got an oscar, but where was the best pic/director oscar? up yours cher, fuck you and your moonstruck. but hell, if you're not going to even nominate kubrick and his last truly great film... ok, thats enough rambling, its about bedtime.

    Obsession

    by stranamore

Vern is absolutely right, but he left out "Obsession" (1976), which is my favorite of DePalma's films -- perhaps because of my love of Hitchcock's "Vertigo," on which it's based, and the city of Florence.

    Depalma Is Tarrantino's Favorite Director

    by skoobyx

If that's an endorsement. Blowout is supposed to be what made him pick Travolta for Pulp Fiction. And you haters are waaaay to hard on him. I'd even put MI:1 as a great film. The sequence where they lower Tom Cruise toward the computer is perfectly done and the sort of thing that would be painful to watch from someone who wasn't as adept at visual storytelling. I've got a real good feeling about him on this one.

It`s one thing to have characters that are young in the novel; it`s something else when it comes to shallow Hollywood actors. Hit boys and hit gals are more artifical than most people to begin with. At least cast people in the early 30s. Not only that but Swank as a femme fatal? I can`t see how Ellroy would have been pleased with that.
