Harry Potter casting news galore! Who is Luna? Is Vera Drake really Umbridge? What about Tonks and Bellatrix? All here!

Published at:  Feb 02, 2006 11:32:19 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here... ORDER OF THE PHOENIX is my least favorite Potter book, however I think it is one that can most benefit from a movie adaptation. There's a lot of fat to the book and a 3 hour streamlined version could be a better telling of the story. And who doesn't want to see Fiennes and Gambon facing off?

Our resident Harry Potter fantatic, Bean, sent in a full summary of what was announced today as far as the casting for ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, including a picture of the unknown girl. Here's the info! I'll be back below with my comments.

Ho guys,

BBC announced major casting news for the upcoming HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Luna Lovegood, the dreamy Ravenclaw, will be played by an unknown, Evanna Lynch, who beat out 15,000 girls. You can see a picture of here!

Nymphadora Tonks, the shape-shifting witch, will be played by Natalia Tena.

Professor Umbridge, the incredibly evil Ministry teacher, will be played by Imelda Staunton, as has been rumored before.

Bellatrix Lestrange, one of Voldemort's Death Eaters and for those who read the books, has a much more sinister role, will be played by Helen McCrory.

Finally, the role of Mrs. Figg, Harry's next door neighbor, has been given to Kathryn Hunter. Does that mean the Dursley's are back for Harry Potter 5?

-Bean

That girl playing Luna looks good for the role. She's got a sort of weird-out, loopy feeling to her. Tonks was one of the girls in MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS, a film I adored, but I can't for the life of me remember what she looks like. Bellatrix looks creepy enough and I'm not familiar at all with Mrs. Figg. All in all, interesting casting. What do you folks think?

... unless for some reason the current actress can no longer continue. I think the problem has been that she has looked so young, but I think that's been intentional on the part of the filmmakers. I think she's growing up to be quite pretty, though. Here (http://tinyurl.com/7shjw) is what she looked like at the Goblet of Fire premiere in London.

By the time they start filming Half-Blood Prince she'll be 16 or 17 and most likely an absolute knockout.

And she even worked with David Yates already in a few things, including last year's Girl in the Cafe with Bill Nighy. After seeing this recently (and I'd highly recommend it - it's fantastic), I'm really looking forward to OotP, because this director really seems to have a sense of style, character and interesting shot composition. He's much more detailed and subtle than the other directors, which is perfect for this next film. I hope it's completely different than GOF. While that one was a decent adventure, it just wasn't that interesting of a film.

    by pwnedbystallone

Phoenix was your least favorite?! Are you fucking insane? It was the best out of all of them except maybe Goblet. In my not-so-humble opinion. I hope Vera Drake can pull off pure evil. Umbridge was quite possibly the most villanious character I've ever read. Every time she said or did something in the book I want to strangle the fucking fat bitch. CHOKE HER OUT! I seriously almost cried a couple of times because I hated her so much. I have never had that reaction from a character in a book before. PHOENIX SPOILER: Two scenes I'm looking forward to in the book are Dumbledore taking out all the ministry jerk offs in his office and Dumbldore vs. Voldermort battle at the end. That has to rock!

    The Weasleys

    by the funketeer

If they go with the whole teen angst sub plot that soured the last book I'm sure the Weasleys will be in it since that was one of the things that pissed off Harry so much and fueled his resentment for Dumbledore. They would also need to explain why Harry was actually left with them. I'd say the majority of this book was kind of boring to read and the teen angst thing was way overdone, but the last 100 or so pages is the best she's ever done. I can't wait to see Neville throw down with the rest of them at the end of the book.

Gotta toss out my support of recasting Ginny. Ginny's supposed to be one of the most charismatic and desireable girls at Hogwart's by Harry's fifth year. The girl playing Ginny may be hot some day, but at this point, there's gotta be another red head somewhere out there who could play that role more believably. But good casting so far, can't wait for Fred and George to leave school

Which is pretty damn good. Other than the guy playing Lupin, who I like in the part but didn't fit my mental image at all, they've done a damn fine job casting all these films. And I think it's cool that they are at a point now where the new characters don't need to be major stars. But Quint, OOTP is your least favorite book? That surprises me - for the very reasons you gave. The GOF, I thought, had WAY more that could have been cut from the book - and I think the movie reflects that. It was really two-books in one and neither of them did much to further the overall arch. In fact, after re-reading them several times, I think about half of GOF should have been tossed and major sections of OOTP should have been moved up to that book. Also, some OOTP pieces could have been moved to book six. Because really, OOTP has more plot points and movement to the overall arch of the story than any of the other books by far. Also, I love HBP, but, wow, I just don't see an exciting film in there.

I agree with Winslett for Tonks- she already did the crazy hair thing in Eternal Sunshine, and I picture the character as cute, attractive, but awkward, which she does real well. This one could be better as a movie

    by skycrapper

HP5 has a bunch of cool moments...(spoilers) like the dementors attacking Dudley and Harry having to defend him, the pen that Umbridge makes Harry write sentences with, the twins big escape from school, the hospital where Mr. Weasly gets muggle stiches, Lockheart has a brief cameo, Kreacher, Brains flying through the air, an all out wizard battle, and let us not forget Sirus bites the dust... However there is so much garbage to plow through in order to get to those parts. They better do some major trimming of the fat.

    worst book...

    by jacklint

The fifth is not the worst. It is the sixth BY FAR. I couldn't believe how bad it was. It had good things in it, like some interesting voldemort backstory, but there was no real plot or dilemma, except "I think somebody is up to something". And the revelation at the end accomplished nothing besides completely detroying dumbledore's character, making him come off as a total idiot. I would honestly like to hear some intelligent defense of this book, because I just don't see what people like about it.

Well, as I said, I think parts pf book five could have been in book six (and book four). But ya know, these things happen because she hasn't written them all ahead of time. That being said, I like what book six does - it's the setup. It's the breather before the big finale. And yes, it does twist some things around and leave you wondering WTH just happened. But I can't pass judgement until I've seen how all the threads are tied up in book 7. However, Dumbledore has been making hints through ALL the books that he was old, very old, maybe too old. I didn't realize this until I went back and re-read 1-6 straight through. So, that being said, wouldn't Snapes ULTIMATE proof of his loyalty be to take out Dumbledore after he (Dumbledore) has shown Harry all he needs to see. All that he can be shown to get to the damn "prophecy". I mean, come on, Harry is bad ass now, this can't be denied. Also, the Dumbledore/Snape argument in book 6, that I think most people assumed was Snape saying he didn't want to be the double-agent anymore, I think that was actually Snape saying he didn't want to wack Dumbledore. It's one possibility anyway. Also, because we all loved Dumbledore and had so much faith in him as a character - I DO still beleive that Snape is on the good side. In fact, my bold prediction here, is that Snape will play a MAJOR part in Harry defeating Voldemort. Beyond all that, I loved the tension in book six. Although I will be honest, it didn't show up until I re-read it because I read it so fast the first time. Everybody is tense in this book. Adults and children alike. They all know things are happening, bad things, and that there is nothing they can do about it. It's different from the other books for sure - but I do love the way it sets up the end of the story. I'm just pissed that, supposedly, the 7th book is the last. There are SO MANY good stories in there. I still hope that JK lets it become a shared universe so that we can read some of those stories................ Lastly, Dumbledore is not dead. : )

Hot British MILF plays Rita Skeeter. *You can take my dictation anyday of the week* (Retrieves wand from under cloak and yells hoarsely: Penis Expando! A flash of white light reveals a gigantic fleshy penii, easily the size of an arm. A monument against the darkened sky, it's head, as if suffused with intelligence, faces all of the Harry Potter women aligned against the dungeon wall, veins alighted by the lightening strikes and flickering torches. An audible gasp is heard as the screen fades to black).

I still hope that JK lets it become a shared universe so that we can read some of those stories................ Lastly, Dumbledore is not dead. : )

Order is the BEST book, without question

    by performingmonkey

I can understand differing opinions but to say that Order of the Phoenix is the WORST Harry Potter book is damn well retarded! Sure, it isn't packed with action scenes like Goblet of Fire, but so fucking what. It is the most adult of the series, has the best drama, the coolest revelations, the best characters. And apart from the graveyard showdown in Goblet of Fire and the lake and Dumbledore death scenes in Half-Blood Prince, Order contains all of the best scenes in HP. These include the Voldemort/Dumbledore showdown (which you know they'll milk for all it's worth in the movie), Harry flipping out at Dumbledore and the whole Prophecy explanation, Harry and Cho kiss scene (This they will also milk. He'll probably end up butt-fucking her on the floor of the Room of Requirement...:), Snape's Worst Memory, Harry's detention with Umbridge, the hospital scene where we see Neville's parents (this probably won't make the movie though), the Dementor attack and Harry's trial, the revelation that Aunt Petunia knows more about the wizarding world than she's telling, the death of Sirius and the classic moment between Harry and Luna at the end that BETTER make the movie or else you might as well cut Luna altogether, which they haven't done. The casting is rather good. The woman playing Tonks was the teen in About A Boy and she was excellent in that. Imelda Staunton is another perfect piece of casting.

means "I don't know what", ie an x-factor or something like that. in hbp harry notices ginny blossoming into a beautiful, strongheaded woman (pardon my cheese), and unless something miraculous happens, the current movie-ginny is NOT the actress to portray that character. when she was cast, no one knew ginny would be harry's love interest. she was just thought of as a secondary character, but now, WB is sitting with their beard in the mailbox, as we say in Norway. WB, please rectify this before it ruins the rest of an otherwise beautifully realized franchise. oh, and luna should be played by a 14 year old christina ricci.

It'll probably be at least a year or so til we have to worry about Ginny being someone Harry falls in love with. And the last time we saw her was filmed a year ago. As I'm sure all the AICN pervs can attest, a young woman can change quite a bit in 2-3 years. And she can certainly improve her acting. I just hope Emma Watson does. Improve her acting, that is. And I agree that it will be hard to judge book 6 fully until we get book 7.

I'm throwing my support for recasting Ginny. It's not a matter of whether or not Harry would fall for an average girl. The thing you have to remember is that Ginny is desired by many boys and even one of Malfoy's pals thinks she's hot and we all know what they think of Weasleys. Like it or not, at that age, any girl getting that kind of attention is going to be good looking. Wright, while not ugly, just isn't hot. I don't blame the casting people because when they first cast the role we didn't know that Ginny was good looking. We didn't know until book 5. They need to recast Ginny and rewrite her to match the books.

And thus, I've drunk far to much Vladivar Vodka. Harry Potter flicks are always watchable in the cinema. It's not just Harry who likes her and that is what you have to consider. Any girl as popular with all the guys is going to be good looking. Plus Harry was in Hogwarts for a while before he started liking girls so he has an idea of what is hot...even if you were only joking. Ginny needs recast. by freakemovie

All this talk about Ginny -- so much to the point of being really creepy since I'm assuming most of you are between 20-40 -- is missing the larger picture. Her being more average than drop-dead gorgeous is a total plus to the character. Who do guys get crushes on in middle school? The friendly, pleasant-looking girl who's willing to talk to you. Not the hot girl that you're afraid to go anywhere near. Ginny is cute in a bit of a mousy way, but what makes Harry attracted to her in the first place is when she stops obsessing over him and actually develops an outgoing personality. Sorry, but I think all the calls for a re-cast are way off base. And, again, it's creepy that we're discussing this in such depth.

I dunno who any of these people are, but Phoenix was a deep, enjoyable chapter of the story, and done right a movie would be very enjoyable. If, one the other hand, they rip all the pages apart, throw them in a giant bucket, and just pull out 2 dozen random pages to base the movie on, like they did GoF, it will be very disappointing for me personally. GoF would have been better served as a 4 hour movie with some of the meaty backstory from the book, as opposed to the cliff's notes version of the book. It was a great movie if you have never read the books, but as someone who has, it was disappointing.

    Relax about Movie Ginny(Bonnie Wright)

    by dinosauron

C`mon, people, she had, like, 2 minutes screentime in all movies. It`s hard to get any real clue about charisma and chops or lack thereof from those mini-moments on the screen. For example, I thought she aced "Leave him alone!" response to Draco`s teasing and anger when tossing the diary in CoS. She could be feisty. Plus, I found her natural in the scene in GoF when telling Ron that the awful robes was his. She could be a tease. Besides, it`s possible they deliberately kept the actress plain and in the background and that she`ll get major stylist attention come OotP and HBP.

    by dirty old len

Cant help but notice that everyones attacking the young ginger one for ginny weaslys lack of character, when the real culprit is chris "i gave the world too many annoying brats on screen" columbus. The fact that ginny is a major player on the page in the chamber of secrets didnt seem to mean to much to the directors "vision" of the movie. All we got was a cliche "tying up of ends" showing ginny as the culprit. This was obviously seen as the way forward when the film did massive monetary success without really including ginny. thus convincing the execs that they could slice her out of any sequels without to much comeback. That said in books three and four she's kind of a background character anyway. But she does play an important role in the order of the phoenix (as far as rebellions concerned). So if we're gonna throw slings and arrows i think we should blame the man who gave us home alone (and dare i mention it? the sequel). He's scarred my eyes much more than that little ginger sprog ever will.
