UPDATED: Rodriguez & Tarantino's GRIND goes homeless? Zombies, Slashers and Cowgirls in Sweden?

Published at:  Feb 02, 2006 3:48:12 AM CST

Hey Folks - Harry here... Rodriguez contacted me to say that VARIETY got the story wrong. The film will continue to be called GRINDHOUSE... and his part isn't... PLANET TERROR, but PROJECT TERROR. Sigh... damn mainstream press... just a bunch of rumors they pull off the fucking internet. Heh. What an incestuous world eh?

Hey folks, Harry here... In the history of Austin cinema... there's only been one film that I've wished to be on the set of more than Tarantino & Rodriguez's GRINDHOUSE... and that's the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE... just had to settle for the crew partying at my house - all those years ago. You can bet your bottom dollar though that I'll get my ass on this set. In particular... I want to be there for every glorious second of the shooting of COWGIRLS IN SWEDEN, the fictional sexploitation trailer being shot especially for the film. Variety is running a story today announcing that the title is being changed to simply "GRINDHOUSE" instead of the previously announced "GRINDHOUSE" -- and that Rodriguez's section will be titled PROJECT TERROR and would be a Zombie pic - btw this is something that Robert has been tooling and retooling for the last 8 years. Trust me, it kicks unholy ass! And Quentin's section will be DEATH PROOF which will be a variation on the Slasher genre. This is gearing up here in Austin and its cast is a closely guarded secret at this point... We'll have to wait and see! This and that damn SIN CITY 2 just can't get here soon enough for me... and I wonder... did Robert really talk to Angelina Jolie about starring in A DAME TO KILL FOR... I know she's certainly a dame most any of us would kill for! Damn that Brad!

    by wesreviews

Not only is it using the title of a movie about skaters (released only 3 years ago) but the title no longer reflects what the movie is. The sub-genre/period of horror cinema was GRINDHOUSE. Not GRIND. A stupendously bad move. You really think these two would know better.

...guys. Really. I've really gotten tired of all things Tarantino, especially after the fucking bore that was Kill Bill. But if he's having fun with this idea and actually pays attention to the plot and dialogue, a slasher from him could be entertaining. Sin City resparked my interest in Rodriguez (which had been waning since From Dusk 'til Dawn), but his take on the Zombie genre is going to need to be distinctive...especially after the scads of cinematic Zombie shit we've had thrown at us recently...for him to retain that interest.

(and *that's* how you avoid stretching talkbacks, children). Jolie is butt-ugly, and Ava needs to be ball-sweatingly gorgeous. by dr_buggerlugs

...from what I've read, this is striking me that it could be the next Four Rooms...Tarantino and Rodriguez doing it for shits and giggles all the while telling each other how they great they are and just indulging each other. It could potentially be great but I just hope either of them don't get stuck up their own arses. I'd much rather see an actual Tarantino project (Hopefully something that this time round isn't just a four hour cinematic mixtape of all the shit he likes) but suppose this'll have to do for now.

    by lovecraftfan

Sorry but KB was a real movie both films doing a great job of not only providing a compelling storyline and great characters but also doing a great at empahsizing two different thing. 1 did amazing job at constructing glorious set pieces of violence and the second provided complex relationships between the character especially Bill whos one of t he best villians Ive seen in a while. Fianlly its actually innovative a breath of fresh air and especially noticeable if one watches a film like Munich which is supposed to be d aring but is actually dull and overrated and KB which genuinely tries to do something interesting. I just dont get the hate KB.

    by brock dd landers

That innovative and Kill Bill are in the same sentence just made you lose all credibility. You can like Kill Bill. Fine. To each his own. But don't fucking call it innovative. Tarantino forgot his formula of paying homage to things he loves while creating something new. I saw homage in Kill Bill, but nothing new, and certainly nothing innovative.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I realize that they were originally one film but they really do play like two. Most of part 2 was filler. Bud's problems with his boss, the meandering dialogue with the hispanic pimp guy and just when The Bride finally meets Bill...an escruciating monologue about his daughter stepping on a fish and a complete misinterpretation of Superman. Bloated, self indulgant bullshit.

    by lovecraftfan

Yes I realize that KB was essneitall y one big homage but how he put that to use in his film w as innovative. The fact that Tarantino is willing to do something different and innovative even if its a well doen homage is fine by me. Certianly better than most coockie cutter films. And Vol. 2 was not a snore fest to me. Sinc e I a ctually thought the character were complex and interesting I found the meandering dialogue fascinaitng and the ending heartbreaking. Okay. Has everybody forgotten Christine? How many variations on a haunted car can you do after that movie (which was surprisingly cool!) and that cool Futurama episode (The Honking? Can't remember). Looking forward to this anyway. Be cool to see Tarantino try out the horror genre and Rodriguez's previous stabs at it were awesome. --- I thought Four Rooms was pretty good. The QT and RR sections were cool anyway, the other bits were a bit rubbish. Madonna's fault.

re: why do people detest KILL BILL

    by beamish13

Because Tarantino ripped huge chunks off of a film called LADY SNOWBLOOD and pretended that it was his own. Among the more egregious similarities between the two:

-the basic concept of a woman in peril whose pregnancy serves as the catalyst for all that follows

-Scene told with animation in KB and illustrations in SNOWBLOOD

    -climactic duel in snow

not to mention that KB even uses a song featured in SNOWBLOOD

Because what you're left with will be the mastubatory "greatest hits" reel of action sequences with no real discernible connection or purpose that we were left with. And that stuff about Bill being a great villain and the great dialogue and character development? If you could go ahead and get rid of that, too, thaat'd be great. Because it's bullshit. Thanks.

    Defusing potential hater labeling.

    by docpazuzu

I love both Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, but I absolutely loathe Kill Bill (1&2). While watching it/them I had the vague and disturbing feeling that QT was blasting a load in my face. While I'm not basing that feeling on anything I myself have experienced (from that point of view) prior to that, I felt that the film's laziness and feeble, selfish, attention-getting winks as well as its hideous self-indulgence were an utter insult. I have no doubt QT spent months with both arms in a sling after wrenching them from their sockets in a prolonged fit of patting himself on the back in self-praise over how pop culturally cool he is. The only thing more offensive than the films themselves were the even more pathetic fanboys in the theater who would laugh or say "oh yeah!" during all the cannibalized "references". The more obscure, the louder the laugh. The only difference between them and me was that when we exited the theater, faces dripping, they were smiling and licking their lips and I was not.

...Lovecraftfan, I've got nothing against you. You actually seem like you're making every effort to be honest about your feelings and relatively civil. It's your taste I'm blasting, and really only as it pertains to Kill Bill. And maybe I'm doing some out-loud-and-angry lamenting about QT's apparent decline as a film maker. He's still at least partly responsible for two of my favorite films of all time (Reservoir Dogs, a fantastic remake of an obscure film, and True Romance, which he co-wrote with the equally talented Roger Avary), I just don't think that -- other than moments of brilliance in Pulp Fiction and slightly fewwer and further between such moments in Jackie Brown -- he's done much worth a warm shit as a film maker since. And it makes me sad.

Tarantino should be a writer first, director second.

    by nate champion

Reading all the anti-KB comments, it seems pretty clear what's wrong with Tarantino post-JB: he's forgotten that he's a writer. No character in KB had even an ounce of the fascination of even the secondary characters of his early films, like Mr. Pink, or Capt. Koons, or Beaumont Livingston, or even the fucking Gimp, for chrissakes. The characters in KB were conceived merely as archetypes and ciphers to plug into his masturbatory action scenes and animation sequences. Shit, his first three films DON'T HAVE action sequences!!!! That alone should tell you where he's coming from nowadays. What would you rather see him do in Grindhouse: a bunch of gory slasher kills, or scenes with characters have conversations like they did in his earlier stuff? Frankly I'd rather see him remake My Dinner With Andre than any of the nonsense that's in his brain at the moment.

Now that my opnion on KB has been pretty well established though I do have to agree with you about one thing. I dont think hes doen anything to match Pulp Fiction. While I love KB even Im not going to say theyre not flawless. On the other hand Pulp Fiction is the one and only DVD of Taratino (not counting TR) I own. Im ona tight budget and frankly I only buy films I adore and I a dore PF with a fiery passion and even willing to say that it as close to perfect as a modern day film can get. Yes people are going to scoff at this but every time I see that film I simply marvel at the screenplay which is in my book one of the most tight and compelling screenplays thats been done ina while. Unlike any other film hes done it was in PF where he perfected the fine art of writing meandering trivial conversations that end being riveting nonetheless. Thats gotta be hard. I could sit there and soak in t he dialogue all day. Combined with great performances, snappy direction PF is one of the few films that get a 10/10 for me. Some others would be like Magnolia. I don't give a shit what anyone says, that includes Denis Leary! That film was nothing short of perfection, well it would have been if the the Isaac Hayes tune hadn't ended so abruptly during the parking lot scene. I really think one of the main reasons I love it so much is for the soundtrack. "Battle Without Honor or Humanity FTW!!! Also "The Lonely Shepard" is probably in the top three of the greatest songs I've ever heard. Everytime, and I do mean everytime the horns kick in when The Bride is presented with the sword, I get chills. ZAMFIR WILL OWN YOUR ASS!!! Awesome movie. Simply awesome. Nuff said. Nuff said.

Uma Thurman. I really like her work in some roles, but she felt totally out of place in those films. A totally wooden performance. Not for a second was she able to convey the appropriate amount of rage necessary for a part like that... she seemed to be wondering what the hell she was doing there. Which is a shame, considering that QT's past films had such pitch perfect acting.

I think if Angelina Jolie doesn't work out, that Rodriguez ought to consider Jennifer Connelly. I'd like to see her in a film I enjoy and/or that doesn't depress the hell out of me. She's also not afraid of doing nudity, and would look great in a noir film (she was in Mulholland Falls). As for Salma Hayek being too old, I disagree. I think most men with a pulse would still think she (and the other soon-to-be-forty hottie, Halle Berry) would be a dame to kill for.

What, Kristin Kreuk would be better for that role? tis to laugh. Tarantino ripped off older movies? Hell, dimbulbs, he freely points to the films that have influenced him, unlike damned near every other director on the planet. Tarantino gushes about them, he has video labels that promote them, he does more to get those old grindhouse movies into the public consciousness than anyone else. KB was too slow in part two? Heaven forbid there be any character interaction in a movie. You people are just so delighted with your misbegotten little opinions that you seem to labor under the delusion that you can declare something and make it so. People hate KB? Nope, sorry. I know people who think it was a bit too long, but no one who thinks it was bad filmmaking. Robert Rodriguez a hack? Hell, you need to be beaten about the head and neck with a copy of the Making of Sin City hardcover. Every movie he's made apart from that studio-murdered Faculty has been innovative, creative and spirited. People think AJ is ugly? Nope. Weird, yes, but very fetching, and with a look that would work quite nicely for Sin City (though, my pitch, Dita Von Teese would too, but not in such a big role without the acting chops proven).

The Rodriguez and Tarantino tales were the only good things about Four Rooms. From Dusk til Dawn was terrific except for two things: the presence of Juliette Lewis and the way-too-short screen time of Salma Hayek as Santanico ("Lowly DOGS!") Pandemonium. Both Kill Bills rocked (though, true, one was a whole lot faster-paced; still, the Uma-Daryl fight was just as good as the Uma-Viveca in Part One), and Sin City was near perfection. Grindhouse is one of those flicks I want on DVD before the movie is finished!

"U" co-conceived the character of The Bride and some vague ideas of a revenge story w/ "Q" alllthewaybackwhen they were on the set of PF, the role was invented by and tailored for HER, i guess sort of spawned from the seedlings of Mia's pilot, "fox Force Five." I think it's kinda neat, after all this time, to see their little epic come to full fruition, never before has such a literal and elaborately committed unabashed genre homage been done on such a huge and scale, successfully sustained thru 2 feature films. That, in and of itself, I'd say qualifies as innovative. That said, lemme jus throw in there that I think The Bride was the most stone-cold baddass heroine mutha since Ripley in the Alien flix (Leeloo in FE was magic too tho). You can talk ish about those huge gnarly, less-than-dainty, lil' piggies of hers BUT do not doubt her righteousness as The Bride, she fits like a glove in that role. Ah Yes, back to you, Redcock; RAGE?? I can tell that you are ignorant to the ways of the Samurai warrior. The whole story and her whole character's attitude are set up in the first moments of the first Vol. summed up with one ancient proverb (one that, I thought, was common knowledge). "Revenge is a dish best served COLD."
