Speaking Of SPIDER-MAN 3... Who The Hell Is Theresa Russell Playing?!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

We heard the casting announcement recently that Theresa (WHORE) Russell is playing the wife of Flint Marko, the Sandman, played by Thomas Hayden Church. But is there a surprise in store regarding her identity?

According to Rich Johnston, there is.

So... she’s The Black Cat? And that’s in addition to the already-rumored appearances by Hobgoblin and Venom, plus new cast member Bryce Howard as Gwen Stacy.

Does anyone else think this movie sounds really, really crowded now?

Keep in mind this is still a rumor, but let’s see how it pans out. And thanks to dmann for pointing this one out.

"Moriarty" out.

geesh, cut raimi a break here. he's made the two spidey films into pure magic. Sure, he's tinkered with the official history a bit, but look, it doesn't mean anything bad's going to happen. So far, we haven't seen a lot of peter parker's campus life, or the scientific/genius stuff everyone keeps commenting that he does. Allowing the extra characters makes Parker's world bigger. It makes it more grounded, because otherwise he only talks to Harry, MJ, and Aunt May. I think it does lay the groundwork for future movies, too. Each character doesn't need to be center stage, and probably won't be. I'm looking forward to the next movie, and I bet for damn sure, that there will be several more down the road. Kirk Out

We've heard before that he's filming 3 and 4 simultaneously, so more than likely all these characters are getting split up between the two movies. Better yet, we might be getting a lot of interwoven storylines that criss-cross between the movies, with the smaller pltlines in part 3 getting fleshed out in part 4. I see part 3 focusing on Sandman and Black Cat (and maybe some Hobgoblin), with an intro to venom, who will be focused on in part 4, possibly with more Hobgoblin. Who knows? I'm not worried. I think Raimi is doing a fantastic job with the franchise. Stop whining!

This is all pure speculation. And when was Theresa Russell ever really a name actress to begin with? Black Widow? Mmmm...I don't think that qualifies. I mean, why are we even talking about her? By the way, I think it would be really funny if Topher Grace ended playing some throw away character that Parker befriends in Advanced Bio-Chemistry who gets run over by a truck trying to pick up the quarter he dropped while crossing the street. And the whole movie, Spidey laments his passing. Like one of those shows where it's advertised that someone will die, than it turns out to be the janitor that all the main characters were "best friends" with, although we'd never seen the guy before. That is all.

    Hobgoblin storyline

    by INWOsuxRED

The original Hobgobling story was good because it was a drawn out mystery that wouldn't work if it happened in just one movie(it also wouldn't work if it ends in a cluster like the original). So two movies would filmed back-to-back would be good. Hopefully it winds up being someone other than Harry. Everyone is assuming it is Harry, and I think the production may be intentionally misleading us to make the mystery actually pay off. I just hope Hobgoblin isn't another power ranger. I just can't watch the first movie. The action scenes are just painful. The 2nd isn't too bad, but I still think there is lots of untapped potential in Spider-Man.

Must again dispell "too many characters killed Batman" myth...

    by christonomist

Batman Forever/&Robin weren't bad because of too many characters, they were bad because they were STUPID. Akiva Goldsman and Joel Schumacher decided to cheese it all up. It's not that Bane lacked development time, it's that they had him say stuff like, "MONKEY..." Heck, I knew something was wrong in the opening minutes of Forever when the first guy Batman was gonna rescue shrieked, "BOILING ACID!!!!" like a cartoon character. Or how 'bout Arnie's golden "A laundry service that actually delivers, WOW!" Notably, this will be the first time a comic franchise will have retained the original helmer past #2. The rule of 3 may just be near dismissal as the studio, for once, is not passing a series off to a hack.

    Breaking the mold

    by malcolm_mccallum

yes, it sounds crowded but the spiderman franchise is in danger of falling into the 'villain of the month' problem where in each film he fights one villain who comes from nowhere and vanishes to nowhere at the end. Spiderman 3 may need to show a greater sense of continuity and the goblin will return to link this to one and perhaps a fourth (or fifth) villain makes a small appearance to make a bridge to Spiderman IV. There needs to be the impression that villains (and maybe other heroes) are peopling this universe now.

    Multiple villians

    by jedimast3r

Multiple villians could be cool if they approach in in an "elapsed time period" way - as in, we come into the beginning of Spidey 3 two more years down the road and he's in the middle of a fight with one or two of them. That could be conceivable. But what screwed up other superhero movies is to try to fit in all origins at the same time...I would much prefer the beginning of Spidey 2 to be rockin' with a badass Hobgoblin or Electro fight, to have Spidey bag 'em and commence the movie plot. That would feel comic-like to me.

    by Hairy Nutsack

What if the movie opens on Spidey fighting one of these villains as an established character rather than having to go through a whole nother origin story again? Wouldn't that just kick ass? Do we really need an entire life history on every damn character? Include a MAJOR villain, have Spidey kick his ass, and then haul that ass into jail in the first 5 minutes. The only other mention of the incident in the movie comes from J. Jonah Jameson bitching about Spidey again. See, now that would kick some serious ass!

  • Jan. 31, 2006, 2:59 a.m. CST

    My beef with Spiderman....

    by GingerTwit

Why are the spiderman effects so cartoony? Seriously, it's like the old black and white Superman when ever there was a distant shot of him taking off. I HATE it! Spiderman 1 wasn't to bad, but the entire 3rd act was changed at the fear of upsetting everyone over sept. 11. what ever that means. But thats what the problem was with the film. The whole 3rd act seemed rushed and not very well thought out. But I did enjoy it for the most part. Spiderman 2 is like Xmen 2. Loved by EVERYONE here on aint it cool, but a flawed and sad entry to myself and everyone I know. And now with Spiderman 3 I already find myself angry - and it's because Sam Raimi has been behind every. single. one. Call me retarded, flame me down or do what ever you like, but I don't believe ANY film maker should have the honour of helming a multiple film franchise that he did not create. A series of Spiderman films should be handed off to a new film maker for each film. Think Star Trek - different film makers handle each film and you get a fantastic diversity - yet a coherant overall continuity. (Like star trek, let Raimi come back for future Spiderman films) Understand that with different Film makers, we have different looking films. And with a new film maker in charge of each film, we get a certain extravagance - as each film must be continued from what has been layed down before. I'm not looking forward to more of the same spiderman. I want some new dynamics. Some new spfx. The only thing that will def be new will be score composer --- but like Danny Elfman said in his interview where he bagged out Raimi, He owns the score, and he will more than likely make the new composer adapt everything from the previous films. Yeah, spiderman 3 aint that exciting to this talkbacker. And with the amount of characters being shoved into it, it reaks of being half assed and slapped together. Raimi is no longer the young indi horror film maker. He's a hollywood suite and he leads the commity which sits around writing these films. it's all gone to shit! I'll see you all later as this film approaches.

    by Archive

That's what I thought until I remembered Spdey 3 and 4 are shooting back to back - now it just seems like a double-issue, and a great way for Raimi to up the stakes on Spidey 2! Big cliffhanger between films, with a recap narrated by Stan Lee? 5 hours to cover character arcs and develop the mayhem? Spidey getting beaten down once by one of these villains, only to have two more spring up on an unsuspecting New York and a beleaguered Peter Parker when he finally manages to get hold of the situation? What could be more Spider-man than that?

    Jerry Mathers as Electro

    by Behemoth

It will do for his career what Pulp Fiction did for Travolta's. You heard it here first.

    Harry's Goblin

    by INWOsuxRED

Has been both good and bad, and if he is in the movie, he could go either way. I'd still prefer a Hobgoblin mystery to a more straight forward Harry as a Goblin story. Seeing as there are pretty much at least two origins for every character in the Marvel Universe and the movie exists outside of either of those, they can pretty much do whatever they want, so looking to comics for precedence doesn't really help.

    Gwen Stacey

    by Barron34

The poster who noted Bryce Dallas Howard's appearance on Jay Leno is right: her hair is dyed blonde, and she DOES in fact come across well enough to play Gwen Stacey, at least in my opinion. I was skeptical at first when I heard of the casting, but the blonde hair plus her natural personality combine pretty well in a way that makes me feel pretty confident that she will be a good Gwen Stacey. Anyway, I think Raimi is a great genre director, but I am wondering how he is going to pull off this film with all of these different elements and characters. Maybe he will, as others have suggested, make Spiderman 3 and 4 back-to-back. That seems to me the only feasible way to deal with all of these characters. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because I liked the first two movies pretty well, and am a long-time comics fan since I was a kid way back when. I do not see Theresa Russell as the Black Cat (those suggesting the girl from "24", Elisha Cuthbert, are on target, I think). I CAN see her as Black Cat's mom, Sandman's wife, or as the Black Widow, but I think that the Black Widow character would have better been in a Daredevil, Nick Fury, Iron Man, or even a Captain America movie. She is more of an international spy that an urban crime fighter, and I would think the character would be better used in a story that was international in some respects. If the Spiderman filmmakers wanted a female foil for Spidey, they should use a younger Black Cat rather than an older Black Widow, in my opinion.
