If someone is eager or anxious to do something, they are said to be champing at the bit, (not chomping at the bit. nor chomping on the bit).

CHAMPING: Repetitious, strong opening and closing action of the mouth which
produces sounds when the teeth hit together. Champing in swine may be a
threat signal, but also is performed by boars during courtship and
mating. Definition from Hurnik et al., 1995

it's even in Harry's mission statement. Harry says he rarely proofreads or spell checks. Sure, it shows, but that's how they do it around here. And it's certainly nothing new. I wouldn't exactly call this site "professional," either. Enjoyable, sure, interesting, yes, informative, of course. But c'mon, the slipshod aspect of this site is endearing. The writers on this site don't use editors. Would they benefit from an editor, even one? Sure, of course. But this person would have to be paid, and there you go. Was Quint's retort pissy? Yes. Should the writers proofread and spell check? Yes. But don't expect them to or be surprised when they don't. There's no reason not to proofread/spell check your talk back comments, as well. You ARE on a computer and it's really not hard. At least Quint

Great then I guess Quint should have ignored my talkback and moved on, but he didn't. Basically, if it's the mission statement then my original statement holds true, none of us should expect too much from the "writers" here. If Quints going to take offense to that and snip back about my own errors, hey I'm just in keeping with the "spirit of the site." Naw, I don't think you over looked it, Quint. For some reason it was only initially posted on the QuickTime front page, but not on the main QT movie trailer page. It would be nice if the movie was encompassing enough to include her breakdown and the tragic events around her vanishing for many years. And it would be nice if they included her 'resurrection' during the 1980's/90's and how the people behind the Bettie Pages magazine and Dave Stephens' THE ROCKETEER brought her back to the public eye. I'm also happy to know that Bettie was found alive and well a number of years back and is no receiving royalties from all things 'Betty Page'. There's no model today, in my humble opinon, that is better than Bettie.

Cagirl - You are missing the whole point about this site

    by mace13

If your looking for boring, professionally written movie articles and news with no passion for the subject then go to "yahoo movies" or something cause your not going to find that type of mediocre crap here.

The guys on this site keep things on the ground level because they're just as big as fans as we are about these movies and not some hum drum reporter who's only writing what he's told to because he doesn't know jack crap about the subject of his own article.

The news articles here are written in the "To the fans from the fans" form and I like it like that. As does a lot of other people. It's actually more like reading an email from your friend rather than some movie article written by a forgetable, every day, boring ass reporter. Ain't It Cool's style of reporting movie news definitely makes more of a connection with us fans with them reporting news in this manner. So none of us really give a shit about grammar or mispelled words with that being the case. But apparently you don't understand that.
And as Quint pointed out your not exactly lil Mrs.Grammar yourself. So there was no need for you to be slagging on anyone else's spelling or style of writing. But as I already said, your missing the whole point of how they write their articles in the first place.

If Quint,Harry or whomever else wanted to write their articles the same way "Entertainment Weekly" does for example then i'm sure they could if they wanted to. But whats the point of that? To be like every other movie site out there?
And besides this is THEIR website so they can write THEIR articles any way they please. When you get your own movie site you can write your articles however you want. Until then take that broomstick out of your ass and loosen up a bit.

  • I was mostly trying to get across the way that the guys here write their articles. It's a completely different format than how yahoo or whatever else write theirs. So any mispelled words or grammar or whatever that might pop up from time to time is excusable because of the format they use.I don't care if a word is mispelled so long as they got their point across. If they wrote in the same way yahoo or msn does then ok you have an argument there cause I wouldn't be expecting to see any typographical errors in those type of articles which have been through an editor and proof read and other processes no doubt before being approved for press for a family friendly enviroment. These guys write their news story and post it themselves with no middlemen involved. They use slang and abbreviations and curse and all kinds of other ways to report their news story. Like I said it's a completely different format.
So cagirl making basically insulting remarks about the way articles are written here is comparable to someone bitching about how a person on myspace.com has misused or mispelled a word in their blog entry. That's just stupid.

  • Time to check your pulses. Anyway, I disagree that Gretchen Mol really captures Betty Page in any definitive way (the look, I mean). The picture on the beach looks most like her, but really, put any actress with a decent, not too skinny body into those costumes and that wig, and they'll look like Betty Page. She had a much more classic and innocent look that this actress doesn't really capture, in my opinion. Of course, the important thing is her performance, which I can't comment on yet.

If you're going to flame at me at least check your facts, ok? MY comment was that the OTHER poster was expecting too much from writers here if they were looking for completely proper vernacular ect...based on the sites own mission statement and comments by others here including Quint himself, it seems my suggestion to that other poster about expecting too much is accurate. Now, move on to the Bettie Page stuff.

I agree with your long entry. I did feel that the guys who "work" for the site (I actually don't even know if they get paid for their stuff!)should be held to a higher level for at least spelling than those of us who post. My only reason for that is I ASSume (I know, bad thing) that they are writing their stuff on a word processing program that has spell check ect, where as me and you are writing on a talkback box with no such tools. I only mentioned THAT because Quint tried to counter my original comment with the fact that I make plenty of errors myself, which I sure don't deny. Give me a talk back with spell check and I promise I wouldn't have nearly as many. I agree though that I prefer the "fan to fan" style of writing here more than the slick "Ebert style" reviews anyday.

Interesting that you claim to hold TalkBackers to a different standard than the editors because of the word processors that they may or may not use, but now you're implicating Quint alongside of us for "expecting too much" [...about spelling originally, now re-purposed to mean the quality of behavior, I suppose]. I apologize. I assumed that the original poster's comment about "champing at the bit" was in response to you, and I shouldn't have. But you're not going to convince me that your comment about the standards around here was anything less than hostile. Anyway... ************ Gretchen Mol looks quite lovely. She looks to have Bette Page down pat. I don't know whether blowing the doors off of Page's history is a worthy venture, regardless of how influential she is, but if the movie is supposedly getting good reviews it might be worth keeping an eye on, at the very least.

Cagirl are you crazy?/My rant/boring speech

    by half vader

You can't pick up a bloody dictionary? Spelling's not even a matter of personal pride, just basic proficiency in using the language. There used to be an argument on the boards that writing on the net 'doesn't count' which seems to have subsided because I'm guessing everyone finally regained lucidity and realised how full of shit that was. "Give me a talkback with spellcheck"?! Do you realise how lazy that sounds? Admittedly I don't rely on it myself partly because American spelling in automatic spellcheckers is rife (and I'm not American), but the point is I shouldn't be so illiterate that I NEED and RELY on one. I think it's pretty pathetic that people can get out of school with lousy grammar and spelling. I'm a Maths imbecile but I had to stand there the other day while the pizza chick searched for a calculator to work out my change. Couldn't do it in her head OR on paper! You go to school to learn how to read and write, right? That point of view doesn't make me a Nazi. You're all right that there's a lot of boring and substandard writing out there but it's got NOTHING to do with spelling, good or bad. Fair enough we all make mistakes (and me more than most), but it should be an automatic impulse to re-read before you post/email/whatever. Nobody really writes letters anymore, so I don't buy that the net doesn't matter". It's one thing to write as you'd speak and I do myself, but how the talkbackers here can be so clueless as to DEFEND their lazy and incompetent habits makes my jaw drop. Sorry I've been so heated about this but I just couldn't stand it anymore. The only thing that calmed me down and made me laugh was Panterarocks over in the Sundance/Wristcutters thread trying to convince Industrykiller that he/she could write. Supposedly it followed that because he or she had a degree that they were infallible (despite the bad sentence construction and redundancy). The funniest part was the avoidance of "you're" and "your". The whole thing is just surreal. "I'm writing about the opinion that I shouldn't have to know how to write" is what the general theme seems to be here. It beggars belief.__________________The one thing I'd probably agree on is that AICN sucks the proverbial for not having an edit function or italics at the very least. I do understand the time-honoured tradition of hitting the return button by mistake and the Homeresque D'oh that follows though. God knows. Finally, following Cagirl's advice let me just say that Bettie was a very clever girl for understanding how graphic (as in graphic design) a haircut can be.

What a shocker! This actress really captures Bettie Page almost to a T.
    Looks great!

What I'm doing now is ANSWERING posts by people like you who just can't get over it and, as chaos731 put it very well, belabor the point ad nausium. If you drop it, I will, keep throwing barbs, I'll keep answering to them, see if you are clever enough to figure that out. By the way, this was never about a mispelled word, but you're too clever I guess to bother with the actual details. Drop it and so will I, it's that easy.

    Hey, since it's Betty Page...

    by blue_demon

Anybody know if Dave Stevens is involved in any way? He seems to be right there for almost any kind of Page book. I think Dave putting her in "The Rocketeer" comics may have been the reason she's made a come-back of sorts. I always wondered why Jennifer Connelly didn't wear the B.P. bangs in the Rocketeer movie. And why she was named Jenny!!

    The devolution of AICN.

    by morgoth

Lummy...the movie subject is Betty Paige as played by Gretchen Mol and the TB is about spell checking. Somewhere a black hole is choking... ** Thank'ee kindly for the Rocketeer connexion Blue Demon. I'll check it out.

I think J. Connelly would have made a great Bettie Page back around the days she was doing "Rocketeer" I'm not so sure about now though.

This whole spelling and grammar controversy seems like a bit of a tempest in a tea cup. This is basically a fan site for fans and by fans, and probably should be seen as only "quasi-professional" at most. Writing quality on the Internet is a valid topic, but this is still the free-wheeling, Wild West days of the Net, and AICN is more free-wheeling than many. This site is not Slate, Salon, or even Entertainment Weekly. It is AICN, a much more fannish and slap-dash affair than many others. Can we talk about movies now, please?*****The Rocketeer film was based on a comic book, as many of you know. For those that do not know, the character that Jennifer Connelly played in the Rocketeer film was from the comic book also, and the comic book character was visually inspired by Bettie Page. I do not recollect if the comic book character was named Jenny like the film character, but I believe so. Anyway, the comic helped to spark a revived "underground" interest in Bettie Page that persists to this day, and Bettie Page is now obviously an icon to those in the know. I'm not sure if her life story is compelling enough to make a decent film, but Gretchen Mol sure looks hot as Bettie, and that might be enough to make this flick a success, and least financially....

    Hola Ribbons...

    by morgoth

...I think folks are placing Jen C. in the role out of sheer lust (and why not?). At the time Jennifer appeared in The Rocketeer, she was in the prime of her buxom youth and, like Bettie, was just flat out voluptuous. I think Gretchen is quite fetchin but isn't quite up there with Jennifer in the (admittedly it's an ephemeral yardstick) bodacious body department though a closer resemblance in the face...if you take my meaning {[:^)
