Want to go to DAVE CHAPPELLE'S BLOCK PARTY? Get a peek inside the big event!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a link to Michel Gondry's newest flick... no, not SCIENCE OF SLEEP... that's at Sundance. The trailer for the documentary he directed following Dave Chappelle around as he arranged a giant concert and then, eventually, the big party itself. I get a strong WATTSTAX vibe off this trailer, I have to tell ya'. Chappelle looks to be in top form. I'm thinking this one looks like a winner. What about you?

    by monkeymafia

Apparently the man's got final say on everything and they can't even get the guy sign off on artwork because he's so MIA. Dave, get your ish together, get some management, put this out and make a new season while we are all still willing to put up with your antics... Lil' Jon won't be funny forever...

  • Jan. 27, 2006, 8:09 a.m. CST

This is just like comedy central pushing a new season of Chapell

that doesn't exist!!!! From everything I have heard Comedy Central only has like "four" episodes of season three and that's without Dave doing the intro's. I think they're still trying to get Dave to finish the new season by making him feel guilty. Every 5 minutes I see an ad for the new season of Chapelle's Show but what are they gonna do. I'll tell ya, they're gonna show those four episodes in different order for six months just like they did with seasons 1 and 2. Comedy Central sucks. It's just like two weeks ago when they were saying Dave Chapelle is back in a stand up special. What they didn't say was that it was a show from back in 97'! Did I say I think Comedy Central sucks? Cause they do.

Actually it doesn't look like Wattstax

    by Vern

Wattstax was a huge stadium concert described as "the black Woodstock," and if you've seen the movie it has a real socio-political emphasis with lots of it being interviews with the concertgoers and with people on the streets about their lives and about the event. It was the biggest gathering of black Americans ever besides civil rights rallies, so it was a big deal. Yes Richard Pryor was in it but he's not on stage and it's not about him driving around the heartland talking to people. I think this movie looks great but come on bud, just because they compared it to Wattstax while they were making it doesn't mean we as Americans have to pretend it "gives off a Wattstax" vibe. Let's be honest here thanks bud.

This was filmed way back in the summer of 2004, back when Dave w

    by Canada's King

Which makes the music in this pretty damned dated. The Roots will have had a new album come out by the time this releases, Common's latest album hit almost a year after this was shot, so we won't hear any of his new (best) stuff during the documentary, and same goes for Kanye West, who's fans will expect to hear shit like Gold Digger and Heard Em Say played, except that those songs didn't even exist at the time this was shot. This film is a fuckin time capsule of two years ago, punctuated by the fact that people gave a shit about Dave Chappelle back then.

  • Jan. 27, 2006, 2:45 p.m. CST

Uhm....we still DO give a shit about Dave.

    by Fatal Discharge

I loved this guy years before he broke big, and just because he's decided to step away from showbiz for awhile...doesn't mean I won't be there if and when he returns to performing.

It's "choke a bitch" napolean. But close enough.

    by IamNumber1

I only point that out cause brady tried slap a bitch in rehearsal and it wasn't as funny. Anyways, no need for anyone else to correct him, let's keep the talkback funny!

  • Jan. 27, 2006, 4:01 p.m. CST

Uhm...the majority don't give a shit about Dave.

    by Canada's King

The teens (largest Chappelle's Show demograohic) who watched Chappelle's Show have moved on to Dane Cook and Napoleon Dynamite. For all they know, Dave Chappelle is a sellout who escaped to Africa to smoke weed. The demographic that made "I'm Rick James. bitch" into a cultural phrase aren't going to stick around for his stand-up career and hosting concerts. They have Ryan Seacret for that.

    Another response...

    by Canada's King

Look, I love Dave Chappelle and I hope he receives a warranted comback. But the market that made him huge has moved on and is oblivious to any concert show featuring him. The people who made Chappelle an international celebrity (arguably the same people doing it for Chuck Norris today) are the one's who buy his t-shirts and endlessly quote him are teenagers. The argument I'm making is regardless of what the advertisers want, the teen market made Dave Chappelle. Sure, you can say you've followed his stand-up career and have been a fan since Half-Baked, but Chappelle became a cultural celebrity only after the millions of myspace teens caught on. Though it may sound dramatic, to them, Chappelle betrayed them by not returning to his show, and after they got burned out watching re-runs on Comedy Central, they created other cultural celebrities. Napoleon Dynamite became huge AFTER Chappelle's Show didn't return to the air (did you see any Vote For Pedro shirts in 2004? No you did not), Flarna. I'm not saying it's popular today, I'm saying it's what a core-demographic of Chappelle's marketlatched onto after Chappelle's Show's demise.

Canada's King, You Couldn't Possibly Be More Wrong About

    by ZombieSolutions

He's still mega-popular. Of course, he's not the flavor of them month anymore, but everyone I know and work with still talks about how funny he is / was. His comedy wasn't built on schtick like Napolean Dynamite (which was tired almost as soon as it was released), but on being ACTUALLY FUNNY. Classic, Hall of Famer Funny. He is / was the new Richard Pryor; a groundbreaking comedy genius. I hope he comes back, but even if he doesn't, his name is already written, in gold, in the All Time Comedy Greats Book forever. He's as loved now as he was a year ago. The only place where his popularity has waned is amongst the goofy ass suburban frat kids who like anything they're told to like. And, you know, those people aren't even human, so, who gives a fuck what DJ Jazzy Trevor Suburban Loser White Kid thinks? When this DVD comes out, its gonna be a best seller. Feel free to quote me on that...

    Dave Chappelle hates Whitey?

    by RonaldLark

Is it true that the main reason he quit his show is because he started to worry that white folks were laughing at his skits a little TOO much?
