Earth: Final Conflict

Published at:  Sep 30, 1998 7:45:28 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Glen here…

Even though it has (apparently) already made its season premier in a few cities here and there, most of us haven’t seen any episodes from the second season of EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT. For the most part, second season FINAL CONFLICT will begin airing sometime next week, depending on the specific schedule in your area.

Those who remember last season’s finale will recall the vaporization of series lead William Boone (Kevin Kilner) in the final episode’s closing moments. Effectively leaving the series a vast array of interesting supporting characters, but no focal point.

Well, here’s the new focal point. An actor named Robert Leeshock, playing a character named Liam Kincaid. This image is from promotional material which was recently sent to me. Don’t get much of it from this series, so I thought I’d utilize what little I had.

Below the image I have included a sample of text which accompanied the picture. Tells you a little about the new Kincaid character. Dig that first sentence. I thought *I* was the king of run-on sentences…

Gene Roddenberry’s EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT is set early in the next millennium after the arrival on Earth of 71 advanced aliens called Taelons, or "Companions", who profess benign intentions but, as witnessed in the first season, have a darker agenda which included human experimentation and the creation of a new hybrid warrior species. In response to the Taelon threat, the Liberation movement has grown, hidden away in high-tech underground headquarters.

Robert Leeshoch joins the cast in the role of ‘Liam Kincaid’ a hero of mysterious lineage, who emerges as part of the continuing evolution of the series and quickly proves that he merits working with the Companions in a critical security position. From the outset, Liam’s destiny is to discover the underlying motives of the aliens and his true identity.

    frustration

    by captain wow

OK, so we finally get a sci-fi show that isn't ALL shoot 'em ups. Especially since the Star Trek series went to absolute shit; and what happens, THEY KILL OFF THE MAIN CHARACTER. Is this like a secret plot by the Bab5 people? What the hell is wrong with the producers? There isn't a better way to make sure this series goes nowhere in the ratings. They spent the entire season building up a backstory and sense of relationship with the audience and then threw it away...PAY Kevin Kilner whatever he wants but get him back. This is the stupidest thing since the Dallas 'it was all just a dream' idiocy.

    final conflict

    by calhoun

As far as I know the main guy wanted to leave, that's the reaason they ed off his character. So no ammount of money (well realistically) could have made him stay.
I have to say that Fina Conflict started off boring but the last few episodes were entertaining. I hope that this new character doesn't turn it into a shoot-em-up or a I'm-such-a-hansome-guy-that-next-season-I'll-be-on-Melrose-Place type of show.

    RE: Last message

    by troy

In the last message, the author wrote that the dissolution of Boone could have been explained as a hologram. Just one problem-----------------
In the ORIGINAL film, Boone did not disappear. The blue energy and gradual erasing of Boone's body was done AFTER Kevin Kilner quit/fired using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). --------------
In other words, Boone did not originally die in the final scene.

    Boone!

I was also disappointed that KK appears to have left the show, however its possible that the plot arc may involve him returning in the future!

    Boon NOT dead?

    by ladner

Perhaps I am remembering incorrectly, but I think the version I saw of the last 1st season episode had Boone's Body in a suspended animation tank (or healing tank as in Star Wars) With Da'an and Sandoval looking intently at it....

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

    What REALLY happened

    by hogarth

The death of Will Boone was planned from square one.

The rumor of what was to take place was that Boone was to have perished, and have Kevin Kilner
    return as a taelon-human hybrid.
Supposedly KK has no knowledge of
the death of Boone until receiving the script for the final episode of last season.

KK found that he did NOT like going from star to second-tier hybrid and having to wear 3 hours of makeup every day. Supposedly he left after 2 episodes, out of frustration.

Majel and the rest of the E:FC management were obviously smoking crack. I found the first season to be rather compelling and enjoyable.

Sure, they might claim that Boone wasn't meant to be the focus of the show, but then why dedicate the entire season and the credit voiceover to solely his experiences?

It's a pity they had to take the primary reason for that experience and flush it down the toilet.

Oh, well.. back to B5 being the best thing on TV.. I had hope for other programs trying to strive for such excellence.. E:FC was getting there, too.

Ladner: Boone in the Regen Tank

    by hogarth

    That wasn't Da'an and Sandoval
looking viciously at Boone's floating body..
    It was Zo'or and Sandoval.
Who as we well know from other episodes had doubts about Boone's loyalty.

Anyone who thinks that the scene wasn't carefully planned, and a result of last-minute CGI revision, is also smoking something special. :) The look on Sandoval's face is not something I think would've been easily generated with CGI.

Sandoval acted with intent to kill. Period. and did.

I'll have to say -- for a cliffhanger, the last episode of the first season was fantastic television -- but I would've much preferred that they used a cheesy TV cliche to bring Boone back from the dead. Kevin Kilner was just too good.

    Earth: Final Conflict

    by kt

It's really odd that Coaxial readers are still slamming Kevin Kilner over the cast change for 2nd season Earth: Final Conflict. Talk about blaming the victim! Both the two producers who effectively run the show on a day to day basis, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, and Kilner himself have all given interviews and online comments which confirm that the decision to "go in another direction" (a well used industry cliche) was made by Tribune, Atlantis and the show's producers (without the input or concurrence of Majel, by her account).

This much is no longer in dispute. Whether the change works out to be at all positive or not remains to be seen. Like many viewers, I was surprised and pleased last season to find that this was not a low-budget shoot'em up, no-brainer show. Will we be saying the same thing in six months? An exec at the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting) blasted what he described as a retooling of the show to go after what he called a youth-adventure audience several weeks ago.

    EFC producers

    by leew

The best example of how the current writing staff
feels about the first season came from D.C. Fontana
at Agamemcon II back in May.
    She'd contacted them about writing
for the new season. They asked her for
    a sample of her writing.
I guess they couldn't pull out
a copy of the script she wrote for them
    in the first season.

kevin kilner & earth final conflict

    by brad

I work in a large talent agency in Toronto where EFC is filmed.
several of our clients appear on the show as regulars. The poop is that Mr.Kilner, while a very nice man, was a pain in the ass to work with. Very " actory" constant battles with producers, and constant rewrites. Too much trouble. The new episodes are great with alot of great new characters. enjoy

    Article on Kevin's Departure

    by joe tracy

Back on July 14 I wrote an article on the departure of Kevin Kilner from "Earth: Final Conflict." The article is located at - www.newtekniques.com/sci-fi/Kevin_Kilner_Report/kevin_kilner_report.html - and includes a quote from Majel Roddenberry. It seems that Kevin Kilner had little say in the matter... Joe Tracy

    Second season

    by mike white

Having seen the first two episodes already, I am rather disappointed with where the show has gone. Aside from Lily's new hairdo and Sandoval's Jekyll/Hyde changes (depending on if he is with Beckett or Zo'or), the rest is rather odd. No Majel Barrett. Unexplainable powers for Liam (do they bother to explain why he can shoot energy from his hands, even though he is supposed to be undercover? Nooooo!). An unknown enemy who may be hundreds of thousands of years away from Earth or who could pop in tomorrow. New title lettering (when the heck is the promised soundtrack coming out?). An alliance between Da'an and Jonathan Doors.

    It is all too weird.

    William Boone

    by jamie cavazos

My husband and I are very picky about what TV shows we watch since we have both been in the business for years. However, there are a few shows out there we find well produced, directed, and acted. Earth F.C. was certainly one of those shows. We missed the season finale, and the season premiere, and we just finished watching the second episode of Season Two. We were confused about the storyline, and extremely disappointed in Boone's replacement. He is, so far, very arrogant, 2 dimensional, and irritating. Several large words in his script obviously gave him difficulties in pronunciation. Unless things improve dramatically in the next couple of episodes, we will definitely be searching elsewhere for entertainment, especially since Majel doesn't seem to be around much anymore.
