Hugh Jackman's lookin' sharp in his PRESTIGE get-up!

Published at:  Jan 23, 2006 9:34:53 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a little snuck (sneaked?) pic of Hugh Jackman in his wardrobe for THE PRESTIGE, one of my most anticipated films currently in production. This isn't much... matter of fact, you could probably swap in a set pic from KATE & LEOPOLD and get a similar pic, but still. I'm eager to see anything on this flick... it's almost good just knowing this movie is really happening!

I'm getting really interested to see this. I'd still prefer a Cart Beats the Devil adaptation but with Nolan and Bale teaming up again, not to mention Hugh and Scarlett, this could do real justice to the book. I wonder if it will be marketed right or allowed to slip away quietly as art house fair. BTW are they no longer deleting 'First' posts? My incredibly witty post to the Negadon thread was removed as well as the 'Second' and 'Third'

    Strange & Norrell

    by plum

I can see where the comparisons are coming from- period piece, two magicians, etc. But they're not the same- I'm pretty sure THE PRESTIGE takes place later than JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL, and the magicians in the latter are student and mentor as much as they are rivals. Not to mention that all the magic in the latter is real, while THE PRESTIGE is all about illusion. Anyway, it's nice to see these pics if only as visual confirmation that filming has started.

I hope they're not stupid enough to try and film this book. It has no real narrative and as such would make a tedious movie. Great book though.

Jackman is great. He reminds me of Carey Grant.

    by superninja

(Although I can't picture Grant as Wolverine.) Great comedic timing and masculine charm. Kate & Leopold was also a wonderful fantasy film with a good cast. He would've been a better Superman than Routh, and could easily play any type of romantic leading adventure character. He should stay away from overwritten beefcake pseudo-gothic twaddle like Van Helsing and stick to movies that take advantage of his athleticism and charming personality. If he is playing an unfunny jerk in this film, it will not be successful. However, if he's playing a funny jerk, it will.

    book review

    by whatyoufear

the novel was just reprinted in paperback format last november, definitely worth picking up. i'm not sure how they are filming the movie, because most of what happens in the book is told in 'flashbacks'. the main character is actually a descendent of borden who receives borden's memoirs (which was published in a small edition in 1902 by rupert angier) and basically the meat of the tale is how angier's and borden's take on what happened during their theatrical careers, and why they hated each other, overlap. two entirely different point of views are shown, which makes for great exploration into unreliable narration.

    by tony mike hall

Perfect, no. But damn close for movie standards. Not sure Danzig would be any better, and Hackman does have the acting chops. No one's ever going to be perfect - I was pleasantly surprised, although I wouldn't complain if they made him a little rougher around the edges (not holding my breath - they want to sell tickets, not please fanboys).

    Book Review w/ Possible *Spoilers*

    by skoobyx

I haven't read it in a while but its an excellent, trippy, period piece about the rivalry between two stage magicians; Alfred Borden and Rupert Angier. It starts in the present day with Borden's grandson who becomes intrigued about his own past after receiving an old magic book in the mail. He meets Kate Angier, Rupret's grandaughter, who still lives in the family manor and has the distinct memory of having once seen him killed in a flash of electricity when he was a small boy. The narrative then switches to the stories of Angier and Borden. Borden has an amazing transposition effect (or prestige) wherein he enters one cabinet and appears from another across the stage in an instant. Angier thinks its too good to be true- in fact, its impossible. He has to learn the secret. After considerable intrigue and some wife swaping (that will be Scarlett's role) he homes in on the source of Borden's power: Nicola Tesla. He travels to America where the eccentric genius helps him constuct the apparatus behind his new and improved transposition trick: In A Flash. Using massive electrical force, Tesla's device can dematerialize a small object (say the size of a man) and reassemble it in another location. Sure, its a little painful, but it puts Angier's act back on top and baffles everyone, including Borden who actually used another method. With roles now reversed Borden becomes obsessed with learning Angier's secret eventually sneaking back stage and catching Angier mid-teleport with tragic consequences. I had a little trouble understanding the ending, as did a few other readers in a previous thread about this movie, but by that point I hardly cared with such an intriguing story. There's a rumor the modern day settings will be eliminated in the screen adaptation but that seems like a missed opportunity as they do a lot to add to the suspense. One other note: a couple of sources I've seen online (including a Publisher's Weekly review) define a prestige as 'the residue left after a magician's sucessful trick' this is incorrect as 'prestige' refers to a trick itself or the 'effect' in modern usage. The term has two meanings in the novel for obvious reasons. Take it from a magic geek. Hope that's helpful.

    Oh and on Glenn Danzig...

    by neosamurai85

I love me some Danzig, but I really don't think it would have worked. Has he ever acted? Good Wolverine ain't all scary badass. One of the things I really liked about the last two films was that they got that about him. The guys got some layers. When Glenn is really pissed looking he can bare a pretty striking resemblence, but when he's calm and not snarling... none what so ever. I think Glenn is creative casting though and might have made an interesting Sabertooth or other beasty (but not Beast) foe. Jackman was not perfect but was miles from anything I could have expected. He did a damn fine job. Hell... he sported the sideburns and hair without looking a compleat fool... that's fucking hard all by itself! Peace.
