Rest in Peace - Anthony Franciosa!!!

Published at:  Jan 21, 2006 12:34:59 PM CST

Uncapie here - Some sad news. Even sadder as I had just met the man in December at Mr.
Robert Wise's tribute. Mr. Franciosa was a gentleman and in good health at the time
I met him. He enjoyed talking about his work and was interested in meeting
people at the next Hollywood Collector's Show in Burbank, California. He shook
hands with me as I thanked him for his time, flashing his trademark smile. An
image that I will always remember him by.

Mr. Anthony Franciosa passed away at the age of 77, Friday.

Born in New York, October 25, 1928, he studied acting with diligence and got
his early break doing stage and television in the fifties.

It was in his first film in the role of "Tony Armotti" in "This Could Be the
Night" that brought attention to him.

Briefly married to another fallen star, Miss Shelly Winters, he acted in such
films "Fathom," with Raquel Welch, "Assault On A Queen," "Matt Helm," "The
Drowning Pool," "Tennebre," the surreal Dan Curtis horror movie, "Curse Of the
Black Widow," and one of his best performances in "Across 110th Street."

In television, he entered our homes as a secret agent in "Search" and "The
Name Of the Game" as investigative reporter, "Jeff Dillion" along with his
secretary, "Peggy Maxwell," portrayed by Susan St. James.

Thank you, Mr. Anthony Franciosa for your great work.

    Matt Helm movies?

    by zer0cool2k2

i thought Dean Martin was Matt Helm in all the movies. I think Franciosa played Helm in a TV series.

    You are correct, ZerOcool2k2

Yes, he did star the tv series, "Matt Helm." Sometimes in Europe, they would take two shows from an American tv series and relase them theatrically as they did with the "Combat" episodes "Hills Are For Heroes." That's where I saw the "Matt Helm" movie though it was a tv series to begin with. Sorry for the confusion.

Midway through January and the years's already taking its grim toll. Watching "Name of the Game" as a kid, being allowed to stay up late because it was on a Saturday here in the UK, is a fond memory.

  • He was great in the show and a cool show ripe for an update - we could call it STALKER PI. Just kidding. It actually could be a cool show nowadays. Also he was great in his guest appearances in MASQUERADE - another show that would make a cool update - and HOTEL.

...Finder of Lost Loves? It was an NBC series in 1984. It didn't last long, but Tony was great in it.

    Two Things About Tony

    by jervis tetch

    1. He was, indeed, briefly married to Shelly Winters -- when he was a thin, sexy young guy and she was older and beefy. Still, they "got it on" she said.
And she just died recently. Grief on Tony's part? Reunited in heaven to "get it on" some more?

    2. He was his coolest in the 60's, as a TV star with a smooth, smooth voice who occasionally made movies. Try him in the big-screen action Western "Rio Conchos" (1964) with the equally cool Richard Boone. Tony plays a wily Mexican rogue on a a four-man "Mission Impossible" ; somewhat politically incorrect but he is suave and likeable in the role

Best prologue ever. Best soundtrack ever. Best killer reveal ever with the villain hiding in the victim's silhouette, subsequently borrowed by De Palma and much lesser "talents."

I also get him confused w/James Franciscus... I like the '80s show, Finder Of Lost Loves he was in, although this is the first time I've thought of it in 22 years...

    I *loved* SEARCH!

    by mbeemer

I geeked out on the gadgets, loved the babes, and *all* the agents *reeked* of cool! (But none of the others could beat Tony's smile.) RIP.
