UPDATE!! (Now With Spoilage!!) Sarsgaard!! Strokes!! SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!!

Published at:  Jan 21, 2006 2:43:43 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

No no no! Not the Swede who played one of the math dudes in “Good Will Hunting”!! Here are the movies Peter Sarsgaard starred in between 2002 and 2005: “The Salton Sea,” “K-19: The Widowmaker,” “Empire,” “Shattered Glass,” “Garden State,” “Kinsey,” “The Dying Gaul,” “The Skeleton Key,” “Flightplan” and “Jarhead.”

SPOILER UPDATE: We're told not to be shocked if one of the Strokes' famous girlfriend - Drew Barrymore - turns up for a surprise appearance.

In related news? Between 1976 and 1994, Steve Martin hosted SNL 13 times, a record that – despite the considerable efforts of John Goodman and Alec Baldwin - still hasn’t been beat. Between 1995 and 2005, Martin hosted no SNLs. On Feb. 4, Martin hosts the show for the first time in more than a decade. His musical guest that night is Prince, making his first SNL musical appearance since Feb. 21, 1981 - a few days short of a quarter century ago!! Take it, Beyonce!

The Prince Showwwwwwwwwwwww! Everybody must be free! The Prince Showwwwwwwwwwwww! Look. Prince says he has a press release for us.

SUPERSTARS ARE FRONT AND CENTER IN FEBRUARY ON NBC'S "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE"

Prolific SNL Host Steve Martin Returns, Extends Record,
Joined By Musical Guest Prince

NEW YORK - January 19, 2006 - NBC's "Saturday Night Live" pulls out
the stops on its sole February broadcast with two legendary performers -
Steve Martin and Prince (LIVE, February 4, 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.).

Steve Martin returns to Studio 8H for his record-solidifying 14th
hosting appearance. The award-winning actor, comedian, author, playwright
and producer's hosting stints have left an indelible impact on SNL's
30-year history. With recurring characters like as the "Wild and Crazy"
Czech Festrunk brothers, each Steve Martin-hosted show is an event unto
itself.

Martin is set to take on the role of Inspector Clouseau in "The Pink
Panther" opposite Kevin Kline and Beyonce Knowles. With scores of film
roles to his credit, Martin has most recently been seen in "Shopgirl"
(which he adapted from his novella) and the hits "Cheaper By The Dozen"
and "Bringing Down the House." Martin starred in such comedy classics
as "The Jerk," "All of Me" "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" "Father of the
Bride," "Parenthood" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Martin
scripted and starred in the hit acclaimed comedies "Three Amigos," "Roxanne,"
"L.A. Story" and "Bowfinger," as well as in the dramas "Grand Canyon"
and "The Spanish Prisoner."

Martin has won Grammys for his comedy records as well as for his banjo
work on Earl Scruggs' 75th Anniversary album. He has won raves for his
essays in The New Yorker, plays "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" as well as
his books "Shopgirl" and "The Pleasure of My Company."

Martin is joined by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and musical superstar -
Prince. Arguably one of the most acclaimed and influential musicians
of the 20th century, Prince makes his first appearance on the show since
1981. Fresh off his double Grammy Award-winning release "Musicology"
and his top-grossing tour, Prince is back with an eagerly anticipated
album "3121" whose first single "Te Amo Corazon" made a major video debut
in December. Always on the cutting edge of music and the music
business - from his rare triple-threat in "Purple Rain" which was the No. 1
movie, album and single simultaneously in 1984 (winning an Oscar(r) for
Best Score as well) to some of his seminal albums, "Sign O'The Times,"
"Around the World in a Day" and "Diamonds and Pearls" - he has sold over
60 million records and was at the forefront of web-based music
distribution with his NPG Music club.

"Saturday Night Live," which premiered on October 11, 1975, is from
SNL Studios in association with Broadway Video. The creator and
executive producer is Lorne Michaels. Steve Higgins produces. Marci Klein and
Mike Shoemaker are producers. Beth McCarthy Miller directs.

Why would anyone be looking forward to this? Has anyone ever seen her on talk shows like Conan, Kilborn, etc? She's a corpse, with no sense of humor, she just sits there making 'whatever' faces. An SNL episode hosted by her would be boring at best, and boring and awkward at worst.

I thought he kicked 7 kinds of ass at the Oscars. He didn't hold back, was brutal to all the hollywood stars. It was such a refreshing change after years of Billy Crystal doing that fucking slo-mo old time baseball routine and Jack Palance jokes. Martin hosting the Oscars was the first time I ever realized that the Oscars *could* be funny and entertaining, beyond finding out who won what.

Martin's problem is that in his early years, he was a 'family funny' kind of guy, and he's not anymore. Now he's a bitter-old man funny kind of guy, but he's still trying to do warm family shit. He needs to take a lesson from Bill Murray, and let his inner asshole thrive.

    by hypeendshere

Steve Martin wasn't "family funny" until Parenthood. and now he's just cashing checks. I don't feel he's a bitter old man, just that he's outgrown wanting to be in genuinely good/intelligent comedies. and Bill Murray's asshole persona hasn't been on film since 98's Wild Things or 96's Kingpin. Bill once said about being famous (in the case of Chevy Chase): "When you become famous, you have 3 years to be an asshole. If you don't get it out of your system by then, it's permanent."

    murray and martin

    by smackfu

I was referring to Steve Martin's movie career. Almost every single movie he's made since All of Me are light-hearted, 'feel good', sweet comedies. As far as Bill Murray's asshole persona, I'm really having a hard time thinking of a single Bill Murray movie where his character wasn't a bitter, abrasive, sarcastic, closed up not letting anyone in kind of guy. Raleigh St Clair is the only inherently nice character I can recall him playing...As far as portman goes, she's a corpse. sorry, but she is. If it's because she's shy, then so be it. But the point still stands, why would you look forward to someone who is shy and not remotely funny hosting a variety comedy show. I mean she's hot to look at, but that's why pictures are so great. You can look all you want without having to agonize through 90 minutes of her sleepwalking through sketches. Portman sure does seem to be good when she's properly motivated, but when she's not it's like watching a grade school play.

I agree on Sarsgaard, he's one of the better 'where I have I seen that guy before' actors...

Why did Steve Martin, a man who is incredibly witty and bright wait until he was near 60 to tackle physical slapstick like the Cheaper by the Dozens and The Pink Panther? As gifted as he was physically (watch All of Me for the closest he'll come to an Oscar worthy role), why wait until your body is rapidly deteriorating before doing this shit?

    by franky 5 fingers

Dude, you're the token fat guy AND the token latin guy - you don't need any other gimmicks. SNL should do a poll: "Is it funny when Sanz torpedoes skits with his incessant laughing?" When the results come back with a resounding "Fuck no," SNL should take heed. And don't patronize us with, "You're just some guy complaining over the fucking internet." Times have changed, everyone is on the internet and, sadly, it's difficult to watch an episode these days without finding fault (and not just in the stereotypical, cynical net-nerd kinda way; once again, times have changed and EVERYONE is on the internet, even non net-nerds with opinions worth listening to). I've personally seen one great episode in the past couple of seasons (Jack Black, Neil Young), and much of the rest barely fit into the "decent" category (although admittedly, I am not a regular viewer). This all reminds me of that Sopranos episode where Christopher has the intervention - SNL is Christopher, and the SNL fans are his family. We really, really want him to work his shit out. But if he doesn't, it may be best for everyone if we just dig a hole and put him out of his fucking misery - get your shit together, or this is as far as we go.

    by bungion boy

Back in the late 80's and early 90's there was a string of characters with theme songs that did very little other than explain their names and what they were about, such as Pat and Mr. Short Term Memory. However, those characters were very funny. And they didn't have to remind the audience of their name and gimmick throughout the sketch. Carrol is not funny. And saying "I'm Carrol" doesn't make a bad sketch funnier. I've always stood by SNL and watch it on its worst nights, but it's hard to deffend it when it's this bad. This isn't even the worst show of the season. Bring back Steve Carell and Dane Cook. At least they looked like they were trying to have fun and were enjoying themselves. Anyone can host the show and just misread cue cards. Rant Completed.

wsa kind of a cross between trying to squeeze whatever humor's left in Chuck Norris worship & and mimicking Tenacious D, maybe the latter is a stretch but the song really reminded me of the D's tribute to the greatest song in the world, and Norris, well other people have already done a better job of finding the cheesy humor in worshipping Norris (the Norris facts, Dodgeball), joke's a lil less funny when you're just trying to latch onto a trend. Should have put in the legwork and found their own cheesy legend, I could of overlooked the Tenacious D similarity if that had been the case. Cat Fancy made me laugh though.

That Target sketch set the tone for the rest of the night. I got more laughs reading the Indiana Jones 4 Talk Back tonight. SNL's funniest episodes are when the host takes charge and plays the funny focal point of the sketch...not the straight person...(Like Scarlett had to do in the Jewelry Store skit last week.) We know the SNL cast can be funny (except Horatio Sans)...that's what they're there for! That's why everytime Christopher Walken hosts it rocks...He does wild characters that are the funniest thing on the screen. Same with Steve Martin...That's why I hoping next week's will be better. And here's a quick fix..."Now Weekend update....with....Jon Stewart....On Loan From The Daily Show!"

The idea was that the TV always be on. So they changed to camera 2. Where we saw Sarsgaard from the side and we couldn't see the TV. Then when Sarsgaard walks back to the bed, you can just catch a guy running underneath the camera to reach the TV and fixed it. meanwhile Sarsgaard is seen laughing, because he can see them trying to fix the TV. All the while Sarsgaard's is trying to stay in character. When they finally fix the TV. We see the TV is displaying Video1. obviously when Sarsgaard hit the TV he either shut it off or switched it off video1. Because someone hit video1 to bring the picture back. This was just a slew of problems they had last night, not just bad skits, but Sarsgaard's kept blowing his lines. The worst episode of the season so far.

That Bill Hader is a throwback...

    by sk909

to the 70's cast. There's something there, like he just oozes that total fucking insanity that Akyroyd, Belushi, and Murray had. I caught that Vincent Price sketch a little while back and I couldn't believe it. It was a sketch that actually wasn't blatantly pandering to 8th graders whose parents let them stay up and watch the show. There's a chance that dude might just be too talented to even be on the show. Either that or he's on with the wrong cast... the cast he should be on retired 26 years ago. Also... Steve martin can still be insanely hilarious, as much as, if not more than Bill Murray. I caught his speech at the end of his Mark Twain awards presentation and every single time you thought it would move into sentimental territory, he would just totally give sentimentality the middle finger. This was especially true when he started thanking his family for making his life so rich and then thanked his other 'secret' family, sitting on the opposite side of the theater, neither family, of course, has known about the other until now. And when he pulled out the Mark Twain quote he had written down out of his pocket - "For the love of God, don't ever give an award in my name." Can't wait to see him host, although if the fucking Tina Fey regime has anything to say about it, it'll fucking suck... just like she does now. There's something about her once everyone started falling in love with her and the fact that she was the head writer... she just became a fucking know-it-all... just a little too smug and comfortable with herself. I don't know if anyone's ever noticed this, but sometimes, a new guy will come on and just kill with something different during Update, and she'll make this weird face or when she does their outro, she just puts on this attitude like, "come on everyone, even though I know your laughed your asses off cause this person did something new and fresh, I'm going to put on this face like I have to beg you to applaud so I can act like I'm still the all-time SNL meter of what's funny and what isn't... show needs a major retooling.

  • Pirate sketch was horrible, Sanz is fuckin' pathetic! Horatio Sanz is one of the most UNFUNNY people in the history of that show. And his little gimmick is to ALWAYS pretend like he can't hold in his laughter because the skit is so funny, thus in turn hoping to sway the audience into thinking he's slipping up and then THEY will start laughing. There is nothing better than when a guest or castmate starts to crack and laugh a little bit at something that is GENUINELY funny but this fucker does it on PURPOSE during the DUMBEST skits.
If Forte wrote that pirate sketch he should be fuckin' fired! And that other guy Keenan, who I don't remember being in this episode is also A FUCKING BORE! This show needs to be revamped or cancelled. I am starting to believe that if I turned to MAD TV I might get a few more laughs and as I remember that show flat out sucked when it first started. I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but I miss stuff like Belushi stopping a sketch because it was going nowhere, then marching up into the control booth to "fire his own father" - or Eddie Murphy blowing a line and telling people to "shut up" - this show has some very talented people, but they keep running tired bits that nobody wants to see - the aforementioned Carol, the Appalachian ER - and what happened to an SNL with new commercials each week? Now we see Taco Town or Boner Juice five or six times... If they're going to recycle shit, bring back Hartman and Colon Blow! Jebus - I hope Martin is funny - he's always been a comic hero of mine - then he decided to play Clouseau - ack.

I watched most of the show and thought it was ok

But what is with that "I'm Carol" skit? From what I read above it seems to be a recurring character. What's the joke? She's annoying but everyone loves her because "that's who she is"? Did I miss something? Or is yelling "I'm Carol" to cover blowing your lines what passes for comedy?

Hammond as Sean Connery and Hader as Al Pacino!

Have those 2 together play those roles in a skit EVERY WEEK, and I guarantee SNL will be saved. Throw in Vincent Price for good measure AND PLEASE KILL OFF WEEKEND UPDATE! TINA FEY HAS DESTROYED THAT SEGMENT BEYOND REPAIR! Good job on the Young Chuck Norris song Parnell.

Indiana Jones and the SNL Sucks

  • True, some may be attacking you, so instead of being a douchebag, maybe you should lay back and be the better man. Just a thought.
