More MASTERS OF HORROR News! Takashi Miike Gets The Axe From Showtime!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
In the talkback for the article that Herc posted yesterday about the second season of MASTERS OF HORROR, many of you mentioned the brewing controversy over the Takashi Miike episode, and today, the story broke wide open thanks to the series creator, Mick Garris.
Here’s a link to the article where Mick discusses the decision that Showtime made to not air the episode.
If you don’t want to register for the New York Times, then I’ll sum it up quickly. Showtime saw the episode, they freaked out, and they decided not to show it. Considering it’s Miike, that shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Hell, when I was talking to Stuart Gordon about the show before anyone had actually started shooting, I asked him which one would be the craziest, and he started laughing. “Oh, Miike. No question. American TV is just not ready.” Turns out Stuart’s prescient, because American TV indeed does not appear to be ready.
I haven’t seen or read the episode, so I can’t really explain Showtime’s decision at all, but I can say this: stop blaming the producers. The whole point of this is that they aren’t going to cut the episode or alter it or water it down. Miike’s original vision will be released intact on DVD. Remember... Showtime didn’t produce this series. They didn’t cast it, they didn’t pick the filmmakers, and they didn’t have any input in the scripts. Everything was handled before Showtime came onboard as a cable distributor. IDT and Industry Entertainment are the producers, and they’re supporting Miike here, not censoring him. We’ll all have a chance to see the episode. We’re just going to have to wait a little longer.
Having just finished my script for season two, I’ll admit that I’m a little nervous now because Scott and I intentionally tried to push the envelope much further this time than we did with CIGARETTE BURNS, and now it’s apparent that there is indeed a limit to what Showtime is comfortable with. Still, I love the fact that the producers allowed Miike to pursue his own demented vision to the extreme that they did, and I look forward to seeing it when it’s finally released.

Probably not, seeing as how no-one is watching it. I hope it gets cancelled right along with 'Huff'. Fuckers can crash & burn for all I care.. they cancelled 'Dead Like Me', and don't have anything worth watching now. 'L Word'?? Gimme a fucking break, that show keeps getting more and more convoluted every day. It's just 'Sex In The City' with all the guys removed, and the humor more mean then funny.

can't say I'm a huge fan of the episodes I've seen but the potential is still there for these filmakers to be inspired by this sort of creative freedom, however, seeing that too much freedom may send their episode straight to dvd may throw a monkey wrentch into the works.

Seriously, I kid not. The biggest disappointment I can remember on pay T.V., and I have low expectations. I tried to defend it for the first 5 weeks, but it kept getting worse. Coscareli, and Dante had good episodes, Carpenters had it's moments. It's sad when the dude who did Feardotcom directs one of the best episodes. I am now left with just HBO.

Wow, I sort of wondered about it when I heard Miike was involved in an episode but I always figured... Showtime... they'll run anything. I guess they're as big of pussys as everyone else. Oh well - when can I get my hands on the fucking box set already?

With Carpenter and Dante having the best episodes so far of what I've seen. The Miike episode was the only one I was looking forward to see.
This show needs some of the new guys like Del Toro, Eli Roth, Peter Jackson, Tarantino and Rodriguez.
Hell why not try some directors that are usualy not assosiated with horror, like Adrian Lyne who did the fantastic Jacob's Ladder. -

...... UK tv normally doesn't have problems with some hardcore type shit, they just out it on late on Channel 4 (because that channel gets all the best American TV). Does anyone know if it's coming to these shores?? Really wanna see any episode for myself to be honest.

With all due respect, I don't blame Showtime. But I do think the producers should stop copping out with the DVD line, and apologise to Miike. Yes, apologise.
Any producer who was halfway horror-literate and business-savvy should have known Miike was never going to deliver something that wouldn't have Showtime running from the room screaming.
It's all very well to say "well, it's going to be released intact on DVD", and he's certainly being a good sport. But he deserved better from everyone concerned - just a little bit of professionalism and plain fucking respect. Wasn't this series born when a pack of directors decided to stop bitching about how hard it was to get movies made and SEEN, and do something about it? -
I'm not sure what the cop-out is on the part of the producers. IDT and Anchor Bay trusted Miike enough to fund his vision. Showtime, which has no control over content, agreed to distribute the show, and then decided that they couldn't handle this episode. IDT and Anchor Bay did what they could. The producers chose not to edit Miike's episode. In a best-case scenario, Showtime would decide to air it and just say, "Sorry. We got nervous. You'll see why when you see it," and then everyone wins. But if that doesn't happen, the producers are still going to put the episode out. It may not be ideal to wait for the DVD, but at least I know what I'll see then is what he wants me to see.

... I think it's fascinating how Joe Dante's was pegged as the controversial episode before the series aired, but now it's becoming clear quickly that Showtime's decision to not air Miike's episode is the one genuine controversy generated by the run of the show thus far.

it's been spotty, yes, but i'd say about half the shows were really good, while the other half ... well, not so good. "cigarette burns," "deer woman" and "incident ..." were all pretty good, i thought. the joe dante episode was totally overrated, and not just because it had such a seemingly trite political message. horrible production values and just uninteresting overall. but i'd rather have a handful of good hourlong horror stories than none at all. and does anyone else think that maybe this is just a ploy to try and get some buzz around the miike episode? i doubt it is, but you always have to consider the possibility ...

I stopped watching after that shitty Hooper episode, Miike's episode was the only one before all this "controversy" that I actually had any interest in only because I was suprised they reached out to him but all these shows look, feel and have the acting talent of crappy SciFi channel original movies.

I felt that Miike must have been pissed- been the more I think about it- well this just adds to his legend- and his crew is probably saying to him "ha! look Miike! Your stuff is just too hard for those American pussies!"- and they'd be right. I wonder if the dvd will have the Masters of Horror logo- and if it will say "Too hard for Showtime" or whatever. Hell- Mori's right though- they did fund it- we will see it. Probably have to wait til the fucking fall now though. I'll buy the Carpenter, the Coscarelli, possibly the McKee and definitrely the Miike- the rest can smuggle my balls out of my jeans. Mori- I know you're working on the show- but hey man you gotta admit- we know that you know that we know that you know that Mick Garris is a straight up hack- and Chocolate was just cringe inducing. Homecoming? Cringe inducing. Dance of the Dead? Cringe inducing. Hell though Mori I like Cigarette Burns even if a tad derivative of the Ninth Gate- knock it out of the fucking park for season II, eh? You should pull a Miike and make it too hard for tele- don't hold back- add to Carpenter's legend here- you're pushing him on the right track... Throw in some piss and vinegar, barbed wire dental floss, pregnant grandmothers committing hari kari via paper cuts and staple removers... Bring it Mori- BRING IT!!!

Anyone else think that if a pay cable channel, airing at 10 on a Friday night, wont air a horror episode deemed too hard what hope is there for these horror channels coming out, especially when they arent even pay channels from what I heard.

that upcoming horror channel will be pure fluff. I got a questino though- I heard that Garris wants Rob Zombie for season II- what makes him think Showtime will air that? Seems there'll be at least one episode each season too hard for the bigwigs at Blowtime. And most of this crap ain't horror- Garris should go after David Lynch (who'd probably be delighted- it's hard for Lynch to get funding for his movies) and Roman Polanski... One's things for sure though- at least this dubious Masters of Horror got all the horror fans coming out shooting the shit, whether up in arms (mostly) or... well... up in arms...

I would agree that most of Masters of Horror was anything but truly frightening, and was in only one or two instances even truly disturbing to look at ("Jenifer" being the big winner there, I think) -- so let me ask this question: Would these episodes have scared us when we were, say, 10? Or even 14? If we HADN'T grown up bathed in the gory glee of THE HOWLING and SUSPIRIA and the subversive, what-if terrors of PHANTASM and HALLOWEEN, would these stories hold more horror for us? Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending them as products more suited to younger viewers! I'd rather my son cut his horror teeth on my old favorites than any of these shows... but if you were 12, and managed to break mom's Parental Control code on the cable box and stumbled on one of these puppies, would they addict you to horror the way really great 70s/80s/90s gems did? (OK, the idea that "Chocolate" would do anything but send any viewer screeching and reaching for the remote is ludicrous, I admit!) Disappointingly, I tend to think these works predominantly pander to the worst aspects of the genre... but I would hope they'd send newer horror fans searching for more clever works by the old masters... Thoughts? And Mori, any inside scoop on what you and Swan might be pondering for Season 2? Fingers crossed it's a bejesus-scarer-outer...

I disagree with Roguewriter, these shows are horrible, even on a superficial, gorehound level they arent interesting and their biggest sin is that they're boring, so I think even a kid catching these shows by accident or on purpose would be drawn to horror films, Queer as Folk could just as easily do that.

But what did everyone expect? There was no way this show was going to scare/sicken/freak us out. For the most part the 'talent' has consisted of hacks or former glory boys that lost their touch eons ago. Yeah, I had hopes - but, looking back, if we are honest with ourselves, we all realise that hope was pretty tentative at best. And, if you will all allow me to go slightly off topic for a moment (and fuck you if you don't): Devil's Rejects, High tension, Wolf Creek, Hostel, et al? This is the new wave of horror? Gimme a fuckin' break! Getting back to the gritty ol' 70's grindhouse scene of the likes of Texas Chainsaw and The Hills Have Eyes isn't being clever or retro or post-modern. It's just being derivative. Where is the new talent, the FRESH talent? Where are all the new fucking ideas, man??! Emulating past hits shouldn't make you a new film-making force - it should just make you a new film-making hack. Memo to Hollywood: what this town needs is an enema; what horror needs is a goddamn revolution...

Frankly, the gore and T&A don't make up for lack of the shows not being terrifying. The opening credits are scarier than most of the episodes.

Miike's episode was the only one left I was looking forward to. Cigarette burns and Incident were the only two decent episodes so far. Stuwart Gordon should be hit in the balls with the sharp end of a claw hammer for that ridiculous Dreams in the Witch house episode. This show demonstrates that the reason most of these guys can't get decent work anymore is because they don't deserve to. They should stick to getting together once a month at a pizza hut in L.A. and moaning to each other about how "watered down" modern horror films are. Fucking geezers...

If a pro team called themselves Masters of Football, had access to the best equipment, could pick whatever field they wanted, had no personel restrictions whatsoever, and still lost 8 games out of 10, I'd be freaking pissed too. This show has been no better than the average horror anthology on network tv, meanign mostly crappy. Given the fact that those are supposedly the best and brightest of horror stars, we were RIGHT in havign high expectations and Garris et al did nothing to lower them. And then they go and make us shell out a outrageous amount of money (what they sell for 16$ for one episodes????? gimme a break) to get THE ONE CURRENT MASTER and the single, lonely episode that actually sounds a bit horrific and cutting edge. Sheesh... I liked Dante's episode and Carpenter's but that's all. It's become an effort to watch it, like it's become an effort to watch 85% of US horror movies. It's literally wading thru an incredible amount of shit in the hopes of finding a diamond. I expected much better than blood covered tits from the "masters".

It feels like it was made for cable. Synthizer music and bare tits abound. I expected better quality overall and was underwhelmed and disappointed after the first five episodes. It's not a matter of them not being scary enough or gory enough--It's a matter of them just being pretty amatuerish overall.

Most series take a season to hit their stride. Least that's how it used to be. Will they bring in other directors for Season 2? Like the SAW guys, or the HOSTEL guy, or Robert Rodriguez. I guess if they did that, it wouldn't really be Masters of Horror... 'course they could call it "Apprentices of Horror". Has Steven King written anying for this? He could direct one. I'm babbling, sorry, I was up until 3:00 working on a rewrite for a low-budget Canadian movie.

Paramount is not airing the Tom Cruise episode in the UK due to Tom Cruise complaining. Whether it will air again here is unknown, but I am assuming it will. ALSO, that whole story on the Pope/Bloody Mary episode censoring was untrue, yes, the episode was pulled (for unrelated circumstances), but it will be airing again, it'll be on the DVDs, and their efforts to remove it went unsuccessful.

The first DVDs are coming out in March, but as far as the Miike episode goes, it's scheduled for Fall 2006.

Seriously, if this is the man behind the show, fuck the show. This guy's a terrible softie when it comes to horror. As in, he just doesn't have a freakin' clue. And, for the record, someone get him out of Stephen King's pants. A lot of the shit Garris touches could be great, if it weren't all smeared in Mick Garris-vision. No fucking surprise at all that Garris couldn't handle Miike. If horror is salsa, Garris is strictly on a mild diet. Miike throws in habaneros.

Speilberg would be great- would love to see him do a full on horror film- he can just bend you round his finger when you watch even one of his not so good films.
Also while we're at it DAVID LYNCH! His films are some of the most unsettling and chilling out there- that bit in Lost Highway with Yound Getty asking his mum and dad what happened to him - the looks on their faces- creepy robert blake and his phone stuff- big cheeked girls- radiators, c'mon, you know I'm right! -
I saw the Dante episode on a preview. It was bland. I was like this is what Showtime is championing. It had a good twist, but this was on par with the dullest of "Tales from the Crypt" episodes. I don't care over the Miike episode. I'll get it when it comes out. Don't you all think this shit is a joke having to pay for single episodes??? They better be damn near 10 to 12 bucks per DVD. If you charge people 20 bucks per disc, you're talking over $200 to get all 13 episodes. For those who bought showtime for this, you fuckers were HAD!!!!! Showtime has nothing going for it in the way of shows.

Is overrated. Audition was not that great, and some of his other work that I watched made me wonder why anyone likes it. Ichi is the only one I like, and its so ridiculous a movie that it works, its not that well done.
All in all Japansese horror is more absurd than anything. Lots of blood, but plots are insanely over the top and not that well crafted. -
As far as Spielberg is concerned he' snot interested in horror... he's interested in "amazing stories"... :::wink::: Lynch would be a great choice but then again would he pander to the lowest common denominator like the people behind this show seem to want all the directors to do? No wonder Romero "didn't have time". Good for him.
How about Cronenberg? Nakata? Shimizu? Edgar Wright? Raimi? even Burton or Verbinski? John Fawcett? Gans? Aja? Amenabar? Tarantino? Wook-Park? Bring back some guys like Dekker, Sherman? Heck give a nice budjet to Rolin, Franco, de la Iglesia and see what craziness they come up with. Anything but this bland crap.
Push the second seasond back a year, take stock, get some real people and some decent scripts and start from scratch. Or even better, let them pick their own scripts, coz it sure seems like Garris counld't pick a good script if Stephen King shat one in his hands. Because if the second season is as shitty as this one, what could have been a great long-term project (and I gotta give Garris props for the idea and getting it together at least) will be gone in a blast of sourness.
Oh and Mori, I guess that means if we can't blame Showtime, then the producers ARE the ones to blame for the banality of 80% of the scripts on MoH? And no I'm not counting yours. -

i bought into it when i first read. but then i realized, its just a marketing ploy. and it was pre-planned. they are releasing the episodes in 2 packs. 2 episodes a dvd...but there are 13, it was always planned to make one episode its own dvd. making up a pretend controversy will only help the dvd sales.

you're absolutely wrong. The episodes are being released as individual dvds. They come out two at a time- with the option of buying them together in a two-pack for a few bucks cheaper than buying them separate, the two packs are pretty much both of the packages stuck together.

it's dumb because I can actually see them losing money by releasing them separately- who would actually buy the Mick Garris episode? or Homecoming, Dance of the Dead, Deer Woman, and a few others for that matter? Not only do they suck, but they're an hour long and being sold at regular dvd prices. I can only see the Carpenter and the Miike dvds selling reasonably well... The others will be stuffed before long into your neighborhood bestbuy bargain bin.

I'm British so I can only see this on DVD, meaning I haven't yet and can't join in on the bitchfest. Maybe it IS bad but it's still the best damn idea I've hear for a TV show since ever. --------- As for the choices of directors being crap, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR TINY MINDS? Some of them haven't had a hit in a while but who gives a shit. Would you rather have the kids who rip them off or the guys who did it first? There's not a single director there who hasn't done something totally awesome (apart from the feardotcom guy I guess). But Clive Barker and Richard Matheson stories on top and I'm drooling (I do regularly anyway if I keep my head still for long periods of time, but more now). --------- Charlie Manson could have written that article and I'd still have read it. If the issue is just an abortion theme then it's all good. The UK doesn't get so uptight about that issue as our bible bashing US friends......

We ALL thought this was a great idea, we ALL like the directors involved (well, maybe not) and some of their previous work - thats why the heavy venom directed at this tepid, boring, hugely disappointing show. and that FearDotCom guy actually directed one of the best eps - at least it didn't put me to sleep or make me want to kick the fuckin tv screen in... as for John Carter, they're waiting until Jon Favreau leaves the project, at which point they'll announce Robert Rodriguez is taking the reins again. When he quits to do some piece of crap in 3-D, Harry will announce that he's directing it, at which point Paramount promptly cancels it.

When I heard Tobe Hooper, Tobe Fuckin' Hooper, was directing an episode, I nearly shat in a hat. Then I hear Billy Corgan's doing the music, and I shat in two hats. Then the episode actually aired. I vomitted blood and an aborted fetus. What the hell was that episode about? Ummm, dirty teenage boys steal blood, only to never have it brought up again. Robert Englund has sex with zombies or something. Some teenage girl can't act. Huh? Anyway. Someone above already mentioned this, and I have to mention it again because it rang so very true. It seems as if they knew from the beginning that this show would be aired on Showtime at a late hour, because it's true, it was full of plastic tits and shitty synthesizer music. I half expected Shannon Tweed to play a sex therapist in one episode. A sex therapist...for the dead! Directed by the guy who directed Troll 2. Coming to a TV near you in season two.

I would be outraged! Also if I liked football I would be VERY excited about this Masters of Football concept. In defense of the show, I always figured the "Masters of Horror" title was supposed to be sarcastic since it involved Mick Garris. But I still want to see for myself. I will definitely watch the show in a couple years when they get their head out of their asses and do it as a season box like the Lord intended.

At least that would be my guess. Cable TV is under pressure now from politicians who are threatening to force cable to offer channels ala carte unless they "clean up their act". My guess is if this pressure wasn't coming from polticians that they'd show the Miike episode. Why is it necesssary for me to clear things up? You people have no idea whats going on in politics.

Thanks for unrepressing that memory. Even as a ten year old I didn't think they were all that hot. Actually after viewing some old 'Tales From The Darkside' episodes I'd have to conclude they were mediocre at best (although that's a damn scary theme song.) Horror and suspense in a series is a tough trick to pull off. I haven't caught any of these but I had a bad feeling. Miike is a phenomenal talent but obviously not easily translated for middle America (I think its around Indiana somewhere) Ill probably end up checking them out when they're on DVD.

And my reason is made up of three words: ABC Mulholland Drive. I imagine turning the aborted pilot into his most critically (and commercially?) successful film since Blue Velvet took the edge off, but everything he's ever said publicly sends a pretty clear signal that he's just not interested in television.

Bad scripts. No, awful, unwatchable scripts. Then casting bad actors. And cheap production values. And adding lots of tits and gore in order to make it horror for Showtime. It's ridiculous. One of the worst shows I've ever seen.

I quit watching it because it was a crap fest. I wouldn't even want my name attached to it if I was a big name horror writer or producer. It's just been awful. That damn zombie episode turned me off permanently. I've got 3 episodes I recorded and haven't watched yet, and I just can't bring myself to sit through them. I thought it was gonna be a kick ass show with all the talent behind it, but it's definitely sputtered and fallen flat on the ole noggin.

David Lynch was just an idea cos a load of the "masters" episodes were shall we say, not great!
Actually Lars Von Trier would be good- for a film though! Kingdom 1 and 2 are just very creepy and funny all the same time, and with genine horror too- the end of kingdom 1 was really great.
That was TV too!
So was the little seen David Lynch comdey "On the Air"....that was television.....and comdey too........slapstick comdey..........which kind of wore out it's welcome towards the end but the Lynch directed opener was great........funny........it was on Tv! :) -
If a pro team called themselves Masters of Football, had access to the best equipment, could pick whatever field they wanted, had no personel restrictions whatsoever, and still lost 8 games out of 10, I'd be freaking pissed too. This show has been no better than the average horror anthology on network tv, meanign mostly crappy. Given the fact that those are supposedly the best and brightest of horror stars, we were RIGHT in havign high expectations and Garris et al did nothing to lower them. And then they go and make us shell out a outrageous amount of money (what they sell for 16$ for one episodes????? gimme a break) to get THE ONE CURRENT MASTER and the single, lonely episode that actually sounds a bit horrific and cutting edge. Sheesh... I liked Dante's episode and Carpenter's but that's all. It's become an effort to watch it, like it's become an effort to watch 85% of US horror movies. It's literally wading thru an incredible amount of shit in the hopes of finding a diamond. I expected much better than blood covered tits from the "masters".

XF started out with a great mystery and year after year, Carter and co. just offered more puzzlign questions and never any satisfying answers. But at least it had a good 3-4 years before it started going downhill. LOST was fantastic last year but this second year is testing my patience to its limits. And pelase kill off Ana L. as quickly as possible, painfully. Rodriguez is one of the least appealing actresses I've ever seen.
