Lots Of Dreamy DREAMGIRLS Stuff Online Today!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
I’m mystified by the reaction so far to news of this film in Talkback. Are you guys really only interested in superhero films or remakes or sequels? Because I would think that one of the most celebrated musicals in modern Broadway history finally coming to the bigscreen in a film written and directed by Bill (KINSEY, GODS & MONSTERS) Condon would be enough to get anyone interested. Maybe that’s just me, though. Maybe I’m the only one who is dying to see what happens when Eddie Murphy finally works with a real filmmaker and a real script. Maybe I’m alone on that count.
I’m betting I’m not, though, and so is Dreamworks. They’re already working hard to create an awareness for the film, and it won’t be in theaters until December of this year. Today, they’ve put out a sizzle reel to give you a feel for what to expect when the film arrives next year. Check this out:

And for those of you who still don’t know what the film is about, here’s the official synopsis:
Set in the turbulent late 1960s and early ‘70s, “DREAMGIRLS” follows the rise of a trio of women—Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)—who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Jamie Foxx), who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy). Curtis gradually takes control of the girls’ look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Though the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.
“DREAMGIRLS” is being directed by Bill Condon from a screenplay he adapted from the stage musical’s original book by Tom Eyen.
Right now, they’re shooting the film, and if anyone in downtown sees any of the flyers that they’ve put up with a picture of James “Thunder” Early on them, PLEASE send us a photo. I’ve seen what Eddie Murphy looks like in the film, and it’s pretty awesome. I get a real strong James Brown vibe off of him. Overall, this is one of the films I’m most curious about this year, and I suspect it’ll pick up some real momentum as the year progresses.
"Moriarty" out.

why the fuck would straight men be interested in a musical??!??!?!?!?! the core of people that come to this site fall under that category. no disrespect to anyone outside of that category, but you can see pretty easily how people don't get excited about some shitty musical.

This is one of those films that set the geeks apart from your average moviegoer; like Tarantino said, you have people who just like the movies they like and fall into their (small) catagory (see talkbacker above and elsewhere) and you have the people who just like movies - people writing on this site, for instance. I'd say anybody truly interested in the medium of film, would be interested in this one, given the director, the story and the actors, and be curious how it will play out.

Seriuosly. No matter his latter day sins, we should be excited to see the possible return of Eddie Murphy (a performer of the highest order of talent) to quality material. And as for all the Jamie Foxx bashing ... what the hell? Anyone with any confidence in their own opinion can see through the haze of the oscar buzz to a magnificently talented actor.

Not being interested is not the same as negativity. Not interested means not interested.

"I've lost all faith in Eddie Murphy" qualifies as "negativity."
As does "Jamie Foxx: Not interested."
The lack of interest is explicitly derrived from an unjustified negativity toward the abilities of these two actors, regardless of one's interest (or lack there of) in the material. -

I can roll with a busy beat. Timbaland crafted nicely intracate and busy beats for Aaliyah. But this Beyonce song "Check on It" is probably the worst Beyonce song so far. Beat is loud and all over the place, and she goes from singing slow to a singing a stupid and fast hook, to then screaming and wailing like a fake Tina Turner. And I'm surprised Swizz Beats produced it. And from watching the video I want to know two things, A) I thought she had an ass? Why is it flat? and B)When did she get a Pepto Bismol endorsement?

Maybe I'm just too much of a geek, but this looks decidedly uncool. Wasn't Jamie Foxx in this movie already? Yes, Bill Condon's a smart fellow, but I guess I've had enough hard-luck singer stories from "Ray," "What's love got to do with it," and the exhilerating "Crossroads," which featured the genius of Ralph Macchio.

Trazadone is a jerk. He writes "nobody is interested in Dreamgirls" as a statement he, for some reason, wants to be true sooo bad. I have no idea what's happened to him in his life, what his actual pathology is but I wish he'd quit bleeding his psyche all over these talkbacks. I can see stating his case once, but angling it four different times (so far) is an act of desperation. It appears there is little "Dreamgirls" love here at AICN, he's correct there but why run it into the ground. And there are some, myself, one of the sites runners, who ARE interested. There are so many obviously bad films that are promoted and talkbacked on this site, some with far less pedigree than this film, yet we never get anywhere near as hateful postings. And if we do its at least couched in some reality. I'm actually fearful that a host of AICN talkbackers would rather see a bad, bad sci fi flick than a great musical film. That's not film love. That's genre induced blind faith. Oh, and a fear of seeming gay.

This is, after all, the site in which the tears flow for Pat Morita more than Brando, Shelley Winters, etc. I was not a fan of Gods and Monsters or Kinsey so I'm not terribly excited about Dreamgirls, but any modern musical has my attention for sure. I'd much rather read about this movie than any of the bloated, waste of time sequels/remakes/etc. made for 13-year-olds with 2-minute attention spans.

sometimes i guess an article brings cool and indeed wonderful news, that makes us anticipate a movie. and sometimes the readers are just thinking by themselves "ahh looks good" and instead of going on posting FIRST or I'M SO DYING TO SEE IT into the TB. i know, that sounds like utopia. but i don't think that TB entries always give a clear representation of the amazement level for a particular film. it would be kind of depressing. not in case of the indy4 talkback of course, but in the case of news about LITTLE amazingly wonderful projects, where there may sometimes be just up to five TB entries. however i am glad that aicn provides all of us with that wide range of variety, because that's what making this site as good as and better then any other print film journalism medium...

Even if you HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, musicals you should at least give THIS musical a chance. IT CHANGED THEATER FOREVER! This was the first all-out, balls-to-the-wall, all-black rock musical (unless I can't think of another). This show comes out of gate like a race horse and doesn't stop until intermission. It seemlessly blends scene and song and was brilliantly staged by Michael Bennett. In it's time it was the most expensive musical ever, and the first to use rock-concert theatricality. Then there was the cast - All brilliant, giving unbridled, gut-wrenching performances 8 shows a week. It's got something for everyone, music, drama, fights (probably the BEST fight scene in ALL musical theatre), redemption, love, lust, sex, friendship, family. The cast for the movie seems great (esp. Jennifer Hudson! She's gonna be HUGE) Just give it a chance, I guarantee you won't hate it.

I've alwasys been a little baffled by this site's definition of a "cool" movie. Cool by whose standards? And Nate Champion, some of the best news I've heard recently is that the 13 year olds are going to the movies less which hopefully leads to them no longer being the target audience.

Jennifer Hudson "less attractive"? Takes all kinds I suppose. The only reason I'll skip this is if they take the show's one barn-burning anthem - 'And I Tell You I'm Not Going' - away from her and give it to Beyonce. No disrespect intended to the bootylicious Miss Knowles, but make sure someone else has a chance to shine.
Another encouraging sign - while I've got my quibbles with the film of 'Chicago', I thought Bill Condon did the best possible job adapting the very stagy musical (whose musical numbers ironically mimiced the form of vaudeville turns) into a semi-realistic movie. Didn't quite work for me, but I can't see how anyone would have done better.
I don't know whether this is going to be 'Moulin Rogue' (which I loved) or 'A Chorus Line' (oy very...), but at least I'm getting excited about something. -

give it a rest already, and find some other way to artificially boost your sense of self-worth. so musicals aren't everybody's bag. so this story sounds like a hundred other stories we have seen about 50's, 60's, 70's bands becoming big and the downfalls of that success. is that our fault? give us Little Shop of Horrors, which even people who don't go for musicals like. why? because its original, it gives us something new and different. or give us Moulan Rouge, because of its dazzling visuals and sureality, energy. but please, don't give us the same old thing and expect us to sit up and beg for more.
-
...it's not like you know the movie's going to be no good, Peven. As wishy-washy as it sounds, sometimes meat-and-potatoes, non-stylistic movies are just as good as ones with "visual flair." I don't really like the lecturing we're getting from Moriarty and all the TalkBackers trying to distinguish themselves from everyone else. The fact of the matter is, if Bill Condon weren't involved, I'm skeptical that even Moriarty would display more than a passing interest for this film, and there's a considerable group of people who don't really care for the man's movies anyway. But either way, it's not that big of a deal, man. The TalkBack's been, surprisingly, a lot more civil than I thought it would be. Little to no namecalling or trench warfare.
-
While I can't wait to see this, don't you think it's a tad hyperbolic to say that Dreamgirls changed theatre forever? Sure, it may have been the first, but how many "more all-out, balls-to-the-wall, all-black rock" musicals have come out since? That's right, none. In fact, not unlike the also wonderful, but also just a novelty, Avenue Q, it hasn't changed a thing. It's just an anomaly in a set of otherwise bland entertainments. Don

well, i want to see this, so there goes your scientific survey that nobody who comes to this site wants to see it. moriarty, many of, if not most, the talkbackers on this site are homophobic and/or closet racists, thusly you get the response to this movie. i am Black and straight and i enjoy good musicals( ex.Grease, Chicago, Everybody Says I love You); looking forward to Superman Returns, X3, M:I3, AND Dreamgirls.
-
Yeah BALTIMOREJACK, anyone who doesn't display much interest in this film is either a) a geek, b) a racist, or c) a homophobe. Jesus Christ. I love how you can turn right around from dressing down trazadone for his obnoxious behavior and write a pile of smug bullshit like that. I know rationalizing behavior is fun and soothing, but believe it or not, there are other reasons for not being interested in 'Dreamgirls' besides for being a monstrous bigot.
-
i know what you are saying, and no, i don't KNOW it is going to be a bad movie, you're right. but i do know that i am not a huge fan of musicals in general, that this story seems to hit all the marks of the standard rise-and-fall-of-a-band/singer movie i have seen too many times for my taste already, and Beyonce being cast as a lead does anything but inspire me to believe in the quality of acting in it. i think those are valid reasons why i am not excited to see it, and in turn resent the implications by those like cottonwood and Mory that if i'm not excited to see it that somehow diminishes my value or credentials as someone who enjoys good cinema. if someone loves musicals just for being musicals, good for them, just don't expect the rest of us to go along for the ride every time. Mory questions whether we, who so aren't interested in this, are only interested in superhero movies, remakes and sequels. well, i can't recall him reviewing or spending any time and space on here this past yr talking about "Me and You and Everyone We Know", a little indie film, and one of the most original, insightful, pure-hearted films i have seen in a long time, the kind i figured a site like this would be championing. i did see Harry mention it once, at least. i don't care just about comic movies and sequels, to say the least, and i accept not everyone has my particular taste. too bad the snobbs on here can't take the same approach.
-
Of course, I'm a girl, but still, after I watched that teaser the first time, I was going "And you, And you, And you, And you're gonna love me!!!" all over the place. I don't know what you just posted here, because I'm at work and can't load it, *shh*, but just to say, I'm not only interested in superheroes. Although I thought "SV" this week was lovely - the Lex/Lana scenes that is. :)

does noone see that musicals are genre films like horror and sci-fi? westerns, even? musicals carry with them an astonishing legacy and a language not unlike horror, scifi, and all the other stuff mish-mashed together with drama and comedy... etc. the story is told in metaphor and in a way that you couldn't tell if it was a straightforward drama or comedy. the emotions are elevated to their most immediate, the most present. also, the fans of musicals are often attacked by the detractors. does this sound familiar to you? are you often criticized for your love of genre? i wasn't excited about Dreamgirls the film because i know the musical very well. it was conceived as if it is staged as a film. Much like Alan Moore's The Watchmen, it works as pure an idea as the medium in which is expressed. it is built for the medium of stagecraft, as Moore created his story for the intimacy of the printed comic. additionally, the actors were relative unknowns at the time. i feel the story should be told in this way. the inclusion of Murphy, Knowles, and Foxx takes that away. (but, how else could the casting go, really?) you won't see them as anyone but their celebrity. i don't know the young girl playing Effie, and that makes it more interesting for me. the musical is about the story, not the celebrity presence. go do some homework and read up on Michael Bennett and Bob Fosse. watch "All That Jazz" and "Singin' in the Rain" again. don't bother with "Xanadu." watch "The Apple" high, if you must.
-
nothing fun or soothing about it. my response was based on having being lumped into trazadone's blanket statement that nobody on this site cares about this movie. i'm not going to sit back and have someone speak for me. also, when you say "much interest" that to me sounds like some to little interest, key word being interest. but on this site, there is utter disgust as soon as something like Dreamgirls is posted; "fuck Beyonce, i hate her song baby Boy so i won't see this movie!" or "i hate jamie foxx, don't know why, but i do". there are some posts that have legitimate reasons why they may not want to see this movie, but there are many that are just plain stupid and moronic. lastly, do you even read some of the posts on these talkbacks? go to any talkback covering Brokeback Mountain, Tom Cruise, Superman Returns, Get Rich or Die Trying(50 Cent movie)or even The Apprentice finale, and tell me that the majority of the posts aren't moronic gay jokes or racist statements(the 50 cent movie). so i stand by my statement, ALL OF IT. and i never called anyone a geek, b/c i am one myself.

Well I was there in '84 as a wee tike and it was amazing. Hope this film does well as RENT was not good and PRODUCERS, while better did not get an audience at all. Still with Condon doing it I have faith that, like his adaptation of CHICAGO, it may not soar but it won't take a nosedive (i.e. Schumacher's PHANTOM) either.
-
Even though DREAMGIRLS was a fantastic show and changed theatre it wasn't even Bennett's SECOND best show. CHORUS LINE and FOLLIES are 1 and 2 in my book with maybe even BALLROOM 3. But I digress....
-
It's nice to see Dreamworks starting its marketing campaign early for "Dreamgirls." Musicals will succeed if given the proper push. The PR powers-that-be have killed recent ones like "Phantom," "RENT," and "Producers" by trying to pass them off as something besides a musical (you could never tell by the trailers), confusing unfamiliar audiences and failing to create any buzz. Those three films never got the Miramax boost (like "Chicago"), and people end up discovering them on DVD. Hell, "Producers" had both Universal and Sony behind it and never got released on more than 950 screens. I think their promotion budget was about 75 cents. So, it looks like Dreamworks has gotten wise. After all, Hollywood has yet to make a movie that has made more money than one of the Broadway megahits.

Well, you did call trazadone a dork. But whatever, that's not really important. Yes, I know that there are a lot of racists and homophobes who post here (and, for what it's worth, I have tried in vain to defend the merits of musicals, rap, and Bryan Singer (and I'm actually seeing now that someone two posts above me made an oh-so-clever joke about Bryan Singer directing a musical. Cuz he's gay and all gay people like the theater, get it?) on numerous occasions). But I got the impression that you were explaining all disinterest in 'Dreamgirls' as a product of ignorance or some kind of intolerance. This, I guess, was a misunderstanding on my part, since you acknowledged otherwise in your post. Sorry for flying off the handle. If you wanna chew me out, feel free.

"why the fuck would straight men be interested in a musical??!??!?!?!?!"
Go jerk off to spandexed superheroes, nitwit. Because that's completely macho.
Musicals are STORIES, just like straight plays, books, and yes, movies. And the great ones are up there in brilliance with any work of art you can name.
To be honest, I was discouraged by the star casting here, but past a certain point, it's going to be direction that matters the most. That's why CHICAGO was great and RENT was...not. (Well, other than the fact that RENT stinks as a stage show, too.) However, the star casting here isn't completely ridiculous- Beyonce as Deena is a perfect case of art imitating life. They're giving her way too much attention even though she isn't the star of the show, she's center stage even though she's not the most talented- it's all exactly like DREAMGIRLS. Perfect. And the third girl, the one who wasn't considered important enough to be in the featurette? Her name's Anika Noni Rose, and she's a Tony winner. Don't condemn this movie out of stupid prejudices; you're just missing out on great stories. -
South Park! Bigger! Longer! Uncut!

is that there was once a time, when you could see shows on Broadway where people acted. Yes, acted, not sung. Plays like Deathtrap, A Few Good Men, Dracula, The Elephant Man and anything by Tennessee Williams. So what happened? Hollywood came and bought up everything and turned them into movies. Now playwrights don't write plays they write screenplays Musicals are the only thing with staying power on Broadway because you don't need a to have a "movie star" to headline a Broadway musical. But you do need one to headline a Broadway play. The spoken word is dead on Broadway.
-
unfortunately, you're in the minority on this one. 99% of the talkbackers wouldn't wipe their asses with a print of this film. Go ahead and waste your $10. I'll be thinking of you when it dies a quick death at the box office.
-
The spoken word is not dead on Broadway. But I'm sure it is to people who make stupid generaliziations. Don't believe everything Entertainment Weekly tells you. DOUBT was headlined by four non-movie stars and was the biggest play last year and continues to run and TAKE ME OUT, also no movie stars here, ran for over a year and continues to tour. Sure they may not run for the 15 years that PHANTOM does but when your capitalization is $1-2 million you don't need to run that long to turn and excellent profit and have many people see your show.
-
The fans just like going to the cinema, they like seeing big explosions, they like seeing thoughtfull dramas as much as zombies chewing on a face. Then there are your movie snobs. Wholl love anything theyre supposed to love. Give em 4 hours of a blue screen and arabic commentary and theyll say they love it. Not because they do, but because they get a boner because "they get it." Do they really "get it?" No of course they dont, they just lie they do so they can get a woody and feel intelectually superior. The world needs more "call a spade a spade" movie fans and less movie snobs. Yes its directed with a guy with some pedigree but Jim sheridan did get rich or die trying. And look at how well that turned out. Its probably best not to try to outgeek each other as to whose the biggest film fan. And lets just all admit beyonce sucks.
-
Yeah, American playwriting is in a definite rut, made worse by the tragic death of August Wilson. His GEM OF THE OCEAN is the last great American play I've seen on Broadway- definitely better than the solid but overrated DOUBT. England keeps producing nice material, though, as THE PILLOWMAN demonstrates. The big problem is that Broadway doesn't have the right environment for plays anymore- it's overly dependent on tourists who all want "event" musicals. So hilarious but lightweight work like SOUVENIR, which would have run a lot longer 40 years ago, can't even make it through the winter.

Why Would A Straight Man See A Movie Without Male Nipples Cast I
by captdanielroe
Seriously, mostly straight men come to this site. Why would they be interested in a movie about three hot cocoa female songstresses? Obviously all straight males want to know about is the bulge in the new Superman's jock, and about whether Harrison Ford is still supple and limber enough to whip-crackingly scorch the screen. Only fags like to watch women, much less listen to music or laugh. ...In which case call me a fag because this current homophobia is about as appealing as dead horse in a heatwave.
-
see, like i said in my earlier post; i have no problems when people give smart, informed reasons like these why they don't want to see a movie. please, keep the talkback brilliance coming, gifted.

as i said, musicals are just like horror and sci fi. if you can believe aliens can rip out your guts and kill a whole crew of people on a huge ass ship out in the middle of space, why can't you believe.. oh never mind. you people can choke on it.
