Guess Who Is About To Walk Into Peter Parker's Life Now!!!! SPIDER-MAN 3 News!

Hey True Believers, Harry Knowles here with some Marvel news to really marvel about. Now, it might be backwards as hell... how Sam Raimi's done this, but he seems intent on doing it. Sam is gonna bring the most beloved character in the history of SPIDER-MAN into the cinematic fold. That's right. As rumors of the second coming of the Green Goblin mount... From screen right enters... GWEN STACY!!!

When Avi Arad called me this morning to discuss the HULK sequel - he let slip that he was intent on calling me today anyway to drop this megabomb of coolnews. He knew that I would friggin love this like no tomorrow! For me, Gwen Stacy is the very embodiment of YOUNG LOVE. She is that teenage girl that dreamt of all those tomorrows that she'd never live. She was the damsel that wasn't saved. Right when Spidey was getting cocky about web-slinging and soul-saving... he lost another. This one, within his own soul. For serious comics fans, the Gwen Stacy story is sacred text. It is, along with the coming of Galactus - the single greatest Superhero arc of the Silver Age. And it was the exact opposite of that story. FF 48, 49 and 50 were about the story cosmic, this was about the story intimate.

As of about an hour ago, the contract was signed. Sam Raimi and Avi Arad have their sweetheart. They've cast young Bryce Howard, yes, Ron Howard's daughter - the one playing the title character in M Night's next film. Bryce is just about the hottest young emerging talent out there right now - and she is, like her father once was, a redhead... but like Ron - she's going b... no, not bald, but BLONDE - hopefully Platinum Blonde for the role of Gwen Stacy. Avi wouldn't tell me if Bryce was signed for one or two pictures. But the key for me was always Gwen's eyes. She had amazing, captivating grey-blue newsprint eyes. Here's the photo Avi sent me, with the note, "Of course she will be blonde..."

Sam's been stellar so far - and this is definitely the right step to head in. Now - if only he'd kill Mary Jane instead. Heh.

Seriously. They should've went with Gwen from the beginning: first movie, Doc Ock is the baddy, Captain Stacy is killed. Second movie, Green Goblin is the baddy, Gwen Stacy is killed. It would've been so easy to pull off. They're cowards, COWARDS I say. ... But they better kill her. And it needs to maybe be Spidey's fault.

    Kind of Ironic

Does anyone else think that it's kind of ironic that Kirsten (a blond) colored her hair red for the MJ part. Now Bryce, (a red-head) is coloring her hair to play the blonde Gwen Stacy. Just thought it's kind of funny.

Spider-Ass 3 Will Own Your Man...

    by Kubla_Khan

....or something. Had to chime in on this, cos boy do I love me some Spidey. Gotta love Raimi, he loves throwing shit at Peter Parker 'til it piles up real high, and I reckon this is a very cool move. Is it me though, or does the actress look a little like that chick from Sex And The City? (Not that I know anything about Sex And The City of course...I'm fucking well hard.) But anyway, bringing in Gwen is genius. Raimi and Avi Arad know what they're doing, I have total faith, and I really hope that the rumours are true about 3 and 4 being shot back to back. The decisions that were made in 2 were all spot on for a fanboy like me. Brw, I'd really love just one shot where Spidey has web under his arms, just for the hell of it. And finally...don't kill MJ, I'm totally into Kirsten Dunst. I say, get the chicks together! Make it Spiderman: 3way. Ah, how quickly fanboys leave valid points behind and descend into wank fantasies...

Oh man, I SOOOOOO knew this was gonna happen!!!

    by Annamaria

Ever since Spidey 1, I've always wanted to have Gwen Stacey in the movies, cause I'm more of a Gwen fan than an MJ fan... and when Kirsten Dunst said she didn't want to do more than 3 movies, and Tobey was a little iffy on more too, I thought, well they should introduce Gwen in the third, and then if Kirsten leaves, instead of recasting and ruining the role, have her die or just leave or something, and you'll have Gwen ready to go in the fourth!!! AND NOW IT WILL HAPPEN!!!! THANK YOU SAM RAIMI!!!!!!!! but please God NO, don't follow the insane storyline with her and Norman that was just retarded... yea, it kinda pissed me off that her most famous scene in the comics (her death) was already used for MJ, and on the Spidey 2 DVD they said they basically combined MJ and Gwen into one character for MJ, so it does leave the question "what's left of Gwen that the real Gwen can be?"... but I trust Raimi, if he's been working on this script for the past year then it can't be bad... on a side note - I grew up with the Spidey movies (and X-Men, Superman, Batman, etc), but if your someone like me and from just watching the movie you get really attached, you'll research all this stuff, cause I've never picked up comic book in my life, and I know a hell of a lot just from reading shit online... and it's a great feeling to be almost on the same level as the fans who grew up with the comics, cause I don't feel like such an idiot when I'm around them...

    sacred text?

    by nicky

as a long time Spidey fanatic and a somewhat less enthusiastic appreciator of the movies - this makes no sense to me. Mary Jane came 2nd for a lot of reasons, and her incarnation in the movies is sort of a combo of MJ, Gwen and Liz Allen from the old comics anyway. In my mind, the classic moment in Spider-man history was the death of Gwen's father years before... a police captain who always seemed on the verge of arresting Spider-Man or discovering his identity... who ends up revealing, in his last breath, that he knew who Peter was all along and now trusts him with his only daughter. At that moment, Peter loses a potential father and friend, but the tragedy of the loss is lightened by the knowledge that Gwen is still alive... though darkened again when she blames Spider-man for killing her father. After that, her death always seemed like overkill to me... leaving an impossibly scarred hero that could never return to the mix of wisecracking and angst we all love about the character. Maybe Raimi will do the Death of Cap Stacy thing, but there's no way it can ever be the same now that MJ is already there and she (along with half the city) has already seen Peter unmasked.

    by Canada's King

But Spider-Man 3 is becoming pretty convoluted plot-wise, they'll have to make this one longer than the other two. We have Peter + MJ, Peter + Gwen, Gwen vs MJ vs Peter (inevitable), Spidey vs Identity revealed, Spidey vs Sandman, Spidey vs Venom (probably), Peter vs Daily Bugle and then an entire arc and a half involving Harry Osborne not to mention the shenanigans Aunt Mae will get herself into. This is easily the biggest film of the next two years - much more than Superman Returns - and after Spider-Man 2, people will be expecting a bigger, better, longer film. Damn I hope Raimi hits this one outta the park, but I hope he knows how to handle the dreaded third film in a trilogy - AND find a way to include Bruce Campbell somewhere...

I'm trying to think here.....

    Sam Raimi has casting dyslexia

    by Rant Breath

He cast Mary Jane(Bryce Howard) as Gwen Stacy, Gwen Stacy(Dunst) as Mary Jane, and he cast the ideal Spider-man(Topher Grace) as some other character. Tobey Maguire has proven he doesnt know how to play Peter Parker or Spider-man. Unless Peter Parker and Spider-man are supposed to be mouth-breathing retards. If that's the case Maguire is note perfect.

  • Jan. 18, 2006, 7:05 p.m. CST

    Dunst's MJ is pretty meh

    by superninja

Dunst morphed MJ into a depressing schlump, so this is good news. Good actress, great character! I doubt MJ will die - just go away to pursue her acting career long enough for Gwen to take a dirtnap. Then MJ will be back, hopefully with improved posture and attitude.

  • Jan. 18, 2006, 7:08 p.m. CST

    Topher Grace as Spider-Man

    by twitaman

I never thought about it until Rant Breath mentioned it, but now that I've heard it that sounds like it would've been a great idea. Why? Because even though I think Tobey is a great actor there's one crucial part of Spider-Man's character that I never thought he could handle well. And that's Spidey's sense of humor. The guy was a smart ass and that's one of the reasons I loved him as a kid. Jokes and quips fall flat out of Maquire's mouth. But I could totally see Topher handling that side of Spidey's personality easily. In addition, Grace is also a fine actor and could handle the dramatic parts too. Well, too bad he wasn't a bigger star when they cast the first film.

    by superninja

Spider-Man isn't written funny in either of the two films. It seems Raimi forgot about that part of that character, which is pretty obvious when you think of it. Maguire can handle humor, Raimi is too caught up in angst. Hopefully to be rectified in the next movie.

That's what I would be saying if these movies were any good... except for that whole part where they aren't. In fact... they suck very much. The worst superhero films ever made. Whose going to do the main song for this film? My Chemical Romance, I suppose. Angst filled, whinny, nonsensical, horribly casted, terrible camera work, piles of crap. Excellent casting... Too bad they didn't plan this ahead. They're just winging it and that equals convolution...

  • Jan. 18, 2006, 7:20 p.m. CST

You can have a lot of characters.

    by superninja

But that means the filmmaker has to trust the audience and not write a backstory or explain everything. For instance, who cares about Sandman's origins if you are familiar enough with the whole concept at this point?

  • Jan. 18, 2006, 7:30 p.m. CST

And no offense to those head-over-heels with Bryce, but she is far from 'all that'. Cute and attractive, but a prime example on how fame makes a person more attractive. If most of us passed her on the street and she wasn't an actress, we'd see her as pretty or cute...heck, maybe even pretty cute...but because of her fame many consider her 'hot' or 'gorgeous'.

I want her to die in the first 10 minutes, which A) thankfully gets rid of her B) gives Peter Parker an intriguing arc and C)allows them to introduce their new, and more talented, love interest. All for it. (now if we can just get rid of Topher Grace...)

What a truly inspired choice to play Gwen Stacy. Bryce Howard is as talented as she is beautiful, and I can't think of any other actress in Hollywood that I would prefer to see in the role. Like her comic book counterpart, I am absolutely convinced that she will steal our hearts much like she stole M. Knight's The Village in her big screen debut. Best casting news of 2006. 'Nuff Said

  • Kirsten only originally signed for 3 Spider-Man films and would surely want an 8 figure deal to resign again for 3 more, which I doubt Sony would want to offer, as Tobey will also be demanding an expensive deal for 3 more films.

    by performingmonkey

Or maybe they're going to totally screw with everything and combine Gwen with Black Cat. I don't think Mary-Jane is going to die at the end of this like people are predicting. It would be the big suckass end to everything and Peter would have no motivation 'cause she's dead. If Dunst is leaving then I think MJ will just decide that she has to move away from Peter. Maybe Peter kills Harry and she sees it. I like the idea of them kind of replacing MJ with Gwen. Hell, she could even go her own redhead. But, of course, Gwen may die. I actually think this will be the last movie, then there'll be a string of straight to DVD shitfests featuring all the fuckass villains that didn't make it to the big screen. Just to please the fanboys. If Raimi ain't doing it, I ain't watching it. And I can't see him going beyond the trilogy. Maybe in this one Harry will have a knife at Aunt May's throat and this will force Peter to kill him.

Having read spiderman for several years...

    by PurityOfEssence

I was not aware that Gwen Stacey was THE MOST beloved character in the history Spiderman. A beloved character to be sure. Sounds good to me, casting seems good. Changing subjects however: Brodester, I have to disagree with you: "VENOM is the character with the most intrigue... VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM... and possibly carnage! And spidey in the symbiote costume!" Venom can be intriguing at first, I however have a hard time taking that particular character very seriously, Venom in the comics became what is essentially a caricature of himself, the type of character that was so ridiculously over the top as time went on (yes over the top for this medium is hard). To be fair however this is more a product of the shameless over use of this character by Marvel (second only to the exploitation of Wolverine... though I still find Wolverine to be one of my favorite characters, go figure. Fuck, I still have that retarded Wolverine and Venom crossover that they did in the late 90's - god it was awful, but I was a completist, damnit. When you peal away all the crap and look at Wolverine you still have a solid character.) Venom is a mixed bag, if done well he could be interesting, but considering the track record with the handling of the villains in the previous movies: Green Goblin was okay, but I but the design was weak - Doc Ock solid performance, great design, but that movie just fell apart by the end (precious tritium my ass, they use that shit in fucking pistol and rifle sights for fuck's sake so god damn retarded, and to prevent the miniature sun from taking on mass and destroying the city you what dump it in the fucking river, and what it will stop, a self-contained nuclear inferno will be doused by the Hudson. The Pseudo-science in most comic books isn't even that fucking juvenile anymore, god damnit). Anyway, I would like to see Spiderman have the symbiote costume (or at least see the black suit in some form on screen). But as far as Venom being good news, no, I just fear that he will be an awful, awful screen character.

Bryce Howard is nice, but kindof a Butterface.

    by Walterego

I spent The Village thinking about how much she resembled her father. I don't want to put her down, she is a very talented actress, but anyone posting that she is beautiful is seeing something that I just don't. When I glanced at the picture of Bryce above I actually thought it was Cynthia Nixon from Sex & the City. I think you're all faulting Kirsten Dunst because she didn't mirror the MJ you imagined based on your impression of the comic book MJ. For the rest of the world Dunst was great as MJ. She had a real sweetness and tender quality that eclipsed her attractivness. But for a character that is written as a real beauty it will be distracting if they cast someone who is not particularly beautiful, and more of a tomboy. I would rather see any of the actresses mentioned by the posters above instead of Howard. Then again, maybe the casting of Howard indicates that they made sheer likability the priority. Like her father, Howard is the sort of person you'd love as a pal, someone so nice audiences immediately feel sympathy for her, which would make her violent death all the more tragic. If that is how they present her, as a sweet girl who is Peter's object of affection rather than of passion then that could work. Although Allison Hannigan might've been a better choice in that regard (same undeniable likability, but cuter). If they've announced it then there is no changing at this point and nothing to do but wait for the finished product. Maybe they can use all that CGI magic to make her a knockout. That would be a true revolutionary use of CGI, for hollywood to start casting actresses purely on acting ability and then let the CGI make them look like Scarlett Johanssen. They could have one DVD cut where the actress looks skinny and waifish and one where she has the curves bangin. Instead of arguing about her hair colour and the poor actress having to dye it, you just select with your DVD remote what colour her hair is. Click! and Scarlett Johanssen turns into Zhang Zyi. Click! again and she is "old school" Lindsay Lohan. Or Natalie Portman. And all along the actress playing her is a chubby girl with an overbite and a unibrow who graduated top of her class at Juliard. Or a brilliant Shakespearean prodigy who studied acting at the Sorbonne and has a faint moustache, giant mossy clumps of armpithair, and a slight curvature of the spine. Wardrobe costs would be slashed as all she would need to wear is that unitard Andy Serkis wore when playing Gollum and King Kong, but what you see is Angelina Jolie in a wet t-shirt.

    just like with LOTR

    by Peven

its ironic, so many hardcore fans of the source material for Spiderman and LOTR are the harshest critics and bashers of the cinematic incarnations of the books and comics. makes me glad i am able to enjoy the movies without such baggage to get in the way. maybe those who seem so enraged and distraught would prefer a movie was never made based on their literary/comic favorite? seriously, it isn't as if making some changes during the translation from page to big screen is anything new in movies, so why should it be so shocking now? in the original Jaws book, Hooper gets eaten by the shark, but you don't see people screaming and crying that because he lives in the movie that Jaws just can't be good because Spielberg didn't respect the source material. maybe spidey fans should be more appreciative that a 3rd Spiderman movie is on its way, while fans of other comics and books are still waiting to see their favorites given $200 million budgets for a big screen translation. for some, the glass is always half empty i guess.

    by Sean38

Spider-Man 2 is EASILY the best superhero movie ever made (and I'm including The Incredibles) so have a little faith. I, too, was hoping for the Black Cat storyline. It would have dovetailed PERFECTLY into Mary Jane's expression as Peter swung away at the end of 2. How long before worried turns into nagging which turns into, "I don't want you to be Spider-Man anymore." Then along comes Black Cat, a woman who not only accepts Peter as Spider-Man but loves him because he IS Spider-Man. But it looks as if they've decided to go another way. But after Spider-Man 2, Raimi and company have earned my trust. I can't wait.

Also agree with the Kristen Bell and Elisha Cuthbert suggestions

    by Mr. Profit

Kristen Bell is cute, charming, and funny. She could have totally played a potential new love interest who charms Spidey and then tragically dies (If that is what they are doing here.) I wonder if Spidey 3 will be like the comics when MJ got jealous that PP was out webslinging and saving people and not paying her attention and spending time with her. If they do that, that could explain why he could start falling for someone new. Still puzzling news though.

    by Kid Z

... I was in NYC in the Museum of Natural History, turned a corner, and there, in front of a giant model of a forest floor, was Ron Howard pushing a his red-haired little daughter in a stroller. Of course my redneck (now ex) wife exclaimed loudly, "Hey! It's OPIE!" Christ I was embarassed... hicks... you can't take 'em anywhere! Anyway, Ron was cool, he just grinned and looked at us like he expected us to talk to him. But, I was too damn embarassed and just sort of stupidly saluted him as I suggested to the (now) ex that we go look at dino bones. Whatever, Ron's cool and his daughter grew up real nicely. Life is good!

    by somethingreal81

Not just cause of the hair color switch, but also because Bryce only got her breakout role in The Village after Kirsten Dunst dropped out to do Elizabethtown. Good choice Kirsten! Even more ironic...Ashton Kutcher was originally cast in The Village, but also dropped out b/c of scheduling conflicts. Then he got canned from Elizabethtown cause he can't act his way out of a wet paper bag with a hole in it.

hey man, long time no see. i understand what you are saying about the movies not adherering to the comic plotline, and thats why someone like me who read some spidey comics as a kid but just here and there is more able to enjoy the movies without having to reconcile original comic canon. still, its just one of those facts-of-life things that when something in print gets adapted for the big screen there are changes made 99% of the time, for various reasons. we haven't seen how Raimi is going to handle Gwen's character yet, but when we do, i'd say THATS when its time to judge how it works within the context of the storyline he has established through 1 and 2. accept the separation between the movies and the comic, and that will allow you to enjoy the movies more.

But she's WRONG for Mary Jane. Mary Jane is a sexpot with a heart of gold. She's gorgeous, voluptuous and a little bit dangerous. She just a hint of stripper in her...know what I mean? Someone like Elisza Cuthbert (if you gave her red hair) more closely matches my ideal on screen Mary Jane than Dunst. Scarlett Johannson might also be able to pull off her smoldering sexuality. Dunst just comes off as a little girl. I still love the movies, but that part is miscast.

God forbid we cast someone talented for a part over hair color. Nice call superhero. >.>

    by FluffyUnbound

Hair dye blows. You might as well say they could cast Joan Rivers for the part and have her get another face lift. They would be better off declaring MJ a dirty blonde. That would be better than the awful dye job they had Dunst get. And if they want to use this actress, they would be better of declaring Gwen Stacy a redhead, because going redhead to blonde is going to make this girl look horrible. She will probably look even worse than Alba did as a blonde, if that's possible. [I would even have preferred a brunette Invisible Girl to what they actually decided to do.]

    Interesting news...

    by Childe Roland

...and it's sparked some really intersting discussion. Please excuse me if I piggy back on anyone's idea from above without properly crediting them, but my head is kind of spinning with possibilities. First, I think it could be a very smart move to reverse the MJ/Gwen roles in Peter's love life. Changing up comic stories for the movies has never bothered me if done thoughtfully and well. They have a chance to do that here. Is Raimi trying to do too much? Maybe. It sure does seem like a lot of familiar "name" characters, who fans are going to want to see developed some, to cram into one movie. But then I look at the list of named characters that will apparently flash on the screen during X3 and I feel like the Spidey 3 roster is still pretty manageable. I agree that Dunst was miscast and pretty much felt so from jump. After seeing her in The Virgin Suicides, I was sure that reports of her playing MJ were erroneous and that she had to be Gwen. Her character from VS was SO Gwen - that tragically distant-yet-desperate to connect perfect little daddy's girl. It would've been inspired to cast her as Gwen and kill her off in the first film. My reservations about Tobey as Spidey were more physical until I actually saw him in the role. Then I knew he was wrong for both Spidey and Peter. He plays both as if muttering his lines through a mouthful of Prozac, and Peter was always played as a smartass, even when he was being pusheed around. That characteristic was just amped to the Nth degree while in costume. I discovered That 70's Show in syndication (pretty much missed it in first run) about the time I saw Spidey 1, and I was telling people then how perfect it would have been to cast Topher Grace as Spidey. He had the perfect physique and personality for high-school Spidey at the time, and could easily train into the shape he'd need to have for more mature Spidey. Plus, after killing off Gwen in the first film, Raimi could've made a play for Laura Prepon as Mary Jane in the sequels. How perfect would that have been? But what is, is. The movies have been pretty darned good despite missed oppportunities. And if Raimi can actually make up for those with this addition to the cast and a well-written plot, I'll be one happy camper with the franchise as a whole. And I say "as a whole" because I will be very surprised if we see a Spidey 4, regardless of how good 3 ends up being or how it does at the box office. I just don't see Tobey coming back.

Why killing Gwen again is a mistake

    by STL Critic

I know Gwendolyn Stacy is doomed to an early death in whatever medium she appears in, but killing Gwen again in Sam Raimi's next Spider-Man picture would be a mistake. Gwen's death had the impact it had not because she was a one issue character, but because she was established. She was one of the ones Peter was supposed to SAVE EVERY TIME. Killing Miss Stacy in the same film that you introduce her would be a waste. Killing Mary Jane Watson, however, would hold the same shock that Gwen's death had in the comics, given that Raimi's MJ is a three film bird. Let's hope Raimi saves Gwen just this once.

Thanks for the comments bud but I think we are both being a little unfair. On Tom Clancy, I really didn't mean to take you to task, I just thought it was worth giving Clancy some credit for coming out against the Iraq war (since your post implied that he would never write a book against the war - in fact, I think he already co-wrote one). Otherwise I would agree with you because I don't like the guy either. I was just trying to be fair to the dude. And as for Ron Howard, you're right, I was being unfair because I want to give this dude some tough love. Just because he's a nice guy and has been nominated for Oscars doesn't mean we should treat him as a real director. The guy did fuckin EdTV. He did the fucking Grinch. Willow. Gung Ho. Cocoon. His best movie is what, Splash? But the entertainment media treats him like he's in the top tier of respectable directors. But you're right, going that over the top negative on a guy (who is not even the topic of the talkback!) is very Talkbacker. I should be striving for excellence here. So you were right to call me out. I stand by the rat soup eating motherfucker part, though. thanks Peven.

It makes no sense to make a red head with freckles blonde and spackle make up on her face to conceal the freckles. Or cast an ugly blonde girl with Vampire Teeth to be a sexy girl. by Sherman_Lives

If we're picking and choosing canon (and we clearly are) for source material, there's no reason it can't be Ultimate Venom, who was more parallel to Peter (science project gone wrong) than 616-Venom. I always said it would be a great spin on the neurotic dual existence plot point from the first two films: PP is tired of being the Spider, but who else will? Suddenly, this friendly neighborhood Venom (black SM costume and all) shows up to make life so much easier for Pete! Suddenly Pete has time for MJ and patching things up with Harry... while Venom (Brock) is dating Gwen Stacy (another nice parallel). Venom makes short order of taking out Sandman, while HarryGoblin watches from the shadows. Since Venom is the "new" Spider-Man, HarryGoblin attacks him, kidnapping Gwen Stacy in the process (you see where this is going, kids?) leading to her death on the bridge-- a failure on Venom's part where Spidey succeeded in SM1. Spidey swings back into action to capture HarryGoblin, but that's not enough for Venom, who outright KILLS Harry! At this point, the costume is in charge, its mask contorting into the MacFarlane/Larson-esque toothy, drooling grin we've been waiting the whole film for! And then the REAL fight begins! What do you think, too fanfic? Sam Raimi stopped returning my calls.

Follow me! I know the way!

    by Sherman_Lives

Thanks all for the kind words about my crackpot theory. And let me address a couple of comments: 1. Ultimate Venom was NOT a clone, a la 616's Ben Reilly. We do not speak of him. 2. We've only seen one picture of Thomas Haden Church as Sandman, and that could be one of many one-scene villains Venom/Spidey takes on (see also: Ken Watanabe as "Ra's Al Ghul" in Batman Begins). Who knows, we may get all sorts of villains in a crime-fighting montage, and we only know about Sandy! Finally, as far as the killing off of Mary Jane, perhaps this is Raimi & Co's wish fulfillment that Spidey should have always ended up with Gwen (see also: House of M... no, on second thought, don't see that). Or you want a real mindblower? Have Spidey fuck up and let Mary Jane die early in SM3 (see also: Bourne Supremacy) and as a result he drops out of crimefighting just in time for Venom to show up (as a hero like in my previous treatment). Of course, Eddie's concerned girlfriend Gwen doesn't know who can relate to what she's going through, except Peter (for reasons I can't make up right now) and she leaves Eddie for Pete when he Eddie goes psycho. In this version, Gwen lives. Until HarryGoblin shows up in SM4. Peter Parker will be like the Sipowicz of boyfriends. Why doesn't Avi Arad put me on payroll?

    by Sherman_Lives

Why is it that the fans have all the best story ideas (and are validated as such within their community) but cannot achieve any kind of rank in the Hollywood studio system? Then we read articles all about how M.S. Johnson is a huge Daredevil fan, how Tim Story is a huge FF fan, and how Brett Ratner is a huge X-Men fan. Just once I want a fan to be the director (or writer, natch), not the other way around! But I guess Joss Whedon or Kevin Smith won't be doing any comic adaptations any time soon. Or here's an idea: put the person in charge of the source material in a position of input on the film (see also: Frank Miller, Robocop 3-- er, I mean, Sin City) You know what, come to think of it, I guess that would mean Chris Claremont would have to write the X-Men movie... and that would not do. Man, I need Lauren Shuler-Donner to lift that restraining order.

    Sherman - Ultimate Venom

    by oisin5199

I was one of the people way back that was hoping for Ultimate Venom, as it ties into Peter's childhood and his father. Your idea about Peter stepping back because Venom (a double) is doing his job reminds me a bit of the Buffy/Faith storyline when Faith kinda takes over until she accidentally kills a human and starts turning evil. It's too bad the movies can't be more like the Ultimate-verse overall, the way the plots of the Goblin, Spiderman, Venom, Sandman and Doc Ock all dovetailed into the corporate attempt to redo the super soldier serum that created Cap America. Probably one of the best explanations why there's so many super-powered wackos running around, as opposed to just random experiments gone wrong. Oh and this is NOT the best picture of Ms. Howard. She's gorgeous (in a natural way - those lips! those eyes!) and all you naysayers are on crack.

'Most beloved character in Spidey history'?

    by Lone Fox

Come on, even Stan Lee admits he killed her off because she was dull! As for the timeline, she could conceivably be killed off in the film ala the comics, some forget MJ was 'on the scene' first after all (though you never saw her face). Didn't MJ leave the book for a while after Gwen's death anyway? I might be confusing story arcs here. BUT that way the film could introduce Gwen, kill her off, and have MJ leave, all within SM3, leaving a clean slate for number 4 (is Raimi still adamant this will be his last episode?)

  • I've never heard him say that. I did once hear him say that Peter and Gwen's relationship was at a point where they either break up or get married. They didn't want Parker to get married but didn't think a break up was the way to go (they were off and on for a while). They decided to kill her because it ended the relationship in a very decisive way and Parker mourning the death of his girlfriend is a better story than Parker mopping about because she dumped him. Tragedy always makes for better drama.

    Spiderman Stuff

    by Barron34

Hmmm. Not too sure about all of this. I was kind of hoping they would keep the Professor who becomes the Lizard for this movie. I wanted to see Parker become more of a scientist. I thought they were setting this up in Spidey 2. I was hoping that Parker losing his powers temporarily would lead to him developing the old Mechanical Webshooters (TM). ***** Also, the film seems too crowded (unless it is true they are shooting 3 and 4 back-to-back). Not thrilled about the female casting so far. I always thought that when Dunst and McGuire were too expensive to resign that the filmmakers would recast, with Topher Grace as Parker/Spiderman, and Laura Prepon as Mary Jane (who is the physical spitting image of the character from the comics, and who also has the same sort of bold personality of the character). Seeing Grace and Prepon back on That 70's Show, I was always struck by their physical similarities to the two characters.***** Whoever suggested the girl from 24 as Gwen Stacy is spot-on. This Bryce Howard girl may be a good actress, but she bears no resemblence to the comic-book character. I could also see Cuthbert as the Black Cat, who I was hoping to see in this film.*****Speaking of which,, I think that this movie should have been mainly about Osborne as the Hobgoblin, with the Lizard and the Black Cat thrown in to mix things up. Spidey 2 really set Osborne up well as a nemesis for Parker/Spidey, and why bother to foreshadow the Lizard if he was not going to be used. A CG Lizard would be cool, if done right. The Black Cat would be good for the sex-appeal, as well as providing an heroic female character for female viewers, as well as a rival for Mary Jane. I really don't think putting Gwen Stacy into these movies at this point makes much sense. They almost have done the Gwen Stacy storyline, since MJ in the films is admittedly a combo of the comic-book version of Gwen and MJ. I also would hate to see them kill off MJ in the films as some sort of "reversal". MJ is Parker's wife, ultimately, and for the filmmakers to put so much effort into the MJ-Parker romance in the first 2 films just to kill her off dnies both the film and comic-book versions of MJ. Better that Mary Jabne should move to Hollywood to pusrue acting instead of killing her off.*****Finally, while I have my doubts about all of these things, I have so far very much liked Raimi's work on these films, so I am still hopeful that I will like the upcoming movie. I would just prefer that they try to stick closer to the comic-book canon instead of changing it. I think a big part of the success of the first two films was that they really seemed true to the comic-book Spiderman, and it would be a shame if they departed too much from the comic-book Spidey for the third film.

Now admittedly, Stan has all the consistency of-- well, put it this way, he has a habit of embellishing after several dozen interviews... but he explained how he preferred MJ as a suitor (in the comic AND the movie), and was surprised at the reaction to The Death Of Gwen Stacy storyline, as it just seemed more interesting than having them split up, and he never expected it to be the hit it was. But the film had just come out, MJ was the love interest... it pops in his head, he says it! BUT he was right about one thing, Gwen was dull. Hot, but dull.

    Mary Jane must die 2

    by sabian123

When the 2nd Spiderman movie came out I wrote a review of what I thought was a great 2nd part to great franchise. I also wrote that the only way the other 2 movies would mean anything is if they kill off Mary Jane in Spideran 3. I've been reading Spidey comics since I was 5 and I was just as pissed as everyone else when they turned MJ into Gwen and the organic web shooters. When I saw the first movie I actually thought that the idea for him to have organics was not so bad. Was still pissed that they used one of the greatest stories ever written by marvel and thrashed it by not having gwen in the first movie and not having her die. Although if that did happen every fan would know it was going to happen. It would have been great tohave seen it play out that way. Although if Raimi has any balls he will kill off Mary Jane simply because of the way the first to movies whent. At the end of Spiderman 1 Harrys says he will make Spidey pay and feel the pain that he's feeling. In two we see a bit of the darker side of harry and he discovers that Pete was the one responsible. Then he's given the power to do something about it. This what cracks me up is all the where not sure that harry becomes the Hobgoblin cracks me up. Why Show that scene that was torn almost out of a comic book when harry finds his fathers lair and not do it? Its the only thing that will connect the movies and by having Harry turn into the goblin whether it is Hobgoblin or goblin 2 is to Have Harry hurt Peter in almost the same way that he was hurt. By killing Mary Jane not Killing Gwen Stacy who the audience will have no emotional attachment for. I truly hope Rami does'nt cop out and have Gwen die because it wont mean the same. Gwen should have been used in the begginning and now that she is'nt the only true way to make up for it is to kill MJ the way the comic killed Gwen and have gwen become what Mary Jane is in the comics. If none of this happens then the movies will suck because when you write a firts and second act and third and so on they have to connect. So if Raimi does kill MJ Which is highly likely since Dunst has said she does not want to do anymore Spiderman than the other 2 movies will mean more. Just think how much better 1 and 2 will be if Harry does kill Mj and when you watch one again and you see Harry swear revenge on Spiderman how much more it will mean and ultimately to truly bring Spiderman to the screen the only way is to bring this tragic story of Peters lost love, No matter if it is Mj and not Gwen. Thats what Spiderman has always been about. His life was'nt always happy and essentially the death of Gwen in the comics is what made Spiderman so great. Not Having His in SPiderman is like not having uncle Ben get shot by the crook. Peters first loves death is a big Part of Spiderman and sadly since Raimi Made Peteres first Love MJ then her dying is the only way to make these movies truly great. Raimis not stupid. As for all the characters their just pawns. Venom and Sandman. The real story is between spidey, the goblin and the loss of his first love. The movie will do fine if Raimi has the balls to Turn Mary Jane Into Gwen. I think I know the direction this movie is going. So Raimi dont fuck this up!!!!!!!!!!And Mary Jane it was fun whileit lasted and gwen nice to see ya again!!

    by twitaman

Though Kirsten wasn't my first choice for MJ (neither was Tobey for Spider-Man) and like them both. One of the main reasons I like her in the role is that she and Tobey have really good chemistry together. Which is funny, considering I read somewhere they're supposed to hate each others' guts. But on screen, you cannot deny the fact that the two of them for whatever reason seem to have a spark.

for fucks sake! if I hear one more person go on about the web-shooters,ill shit! the reason why cameron went with the organic web-shooters is that it is ALOT more plausible than some fluid that can do virtually anything by pressing a button. wouldnt parker just sell the fluid formula to the military and make a shit load of money? it also makes the character alot more powerful. And yes, I know this is/I am gay. but enough about the webs. Gwen stacy is an unexpected choice for the third movie but it soundsreal good. running out of fluid

    by Sherman_Lives

Yes, because none of us has engaged in an activity that has caused us to "run out of fluid" organically, right? I mean, and then have to maybe wait five minutes to get started again? --- Anyway, I've resigned myself to thinking of these movies and shows like "What If?" and "Elseworlds." What if Spider-Man's first love was Mary Jane? What if Victor Von Doom was with the FF during the cosmic storm (and not in that "Ultimate" way)? What if Bullseye was a leprechaun, Kingpin was black, and Elektra was a WASP? (Still wish Fox would greenlight a buddy picture about Foggy Nelson and Johnny Storm, the best parts of their respective films) Or how about: What if Kal-El came to earth in the mid-1980's, Lana was, let's say, Inuit, and Pete was an afterthought? What if Superman left earth, only to return to find Lois squirted out a kid in the interim?---- Basically, this thinking allows me not to spaz out so much when the projects go so far "off-book." This way, watching Smallville, I can't say, "well they can't kill Lana, she's still alive in the comics!" (Or is that pre- or post- Infinite Crisis? ) Geoff Johns owes me $40 and some pie!

    by misnomer

yeah, I really liked that trailer-itd be great to see spidey take on more low-level thugs like that-who arent always connected to him-just so we can have a spidey "burly brawl". cameron didnt do spidey in the end, but koepp took alot from his original script. It was cameron who came up with the idea of organic webbing-in his script parker would feel a need to replenish his lost protein by drinking lots of milk-which i though was kinda cool-made him more of a freak... I can see where your coming from with the added tension of him running out of webs during a fight though-but they still managed to touch upon that in sm2 by making it a psychological thing. itd be great if, from now on, his webs arent always that reliable...

I shudder every time I see her half-open slits. Yeech. The reason Parker never sold his superadhesive web formula to the gov't is because it dissolves after two hours. Which is also why New York isn't constantly covered in webs. Who cleans that shit up in the movies?

Bryce Howard as Gwen works because of her personality more than

    by lettersoftransit

I've seen her in nothing else that I know of, but she exuded a real sweetness and strength in the Village, and was just about the only thing that kept me interested once the ending became obvious (about three minutes in). As a kid I first paid for a spider-man comic because of how hot Mary Jane looked dancing in a pair of go-go boots, only to get hooked on the super-soapy Gwen storyline. She was not just incredible looking but unreal in her sweetness and priorities (she was initially attracted to Peter because of his brain). I read the comic only intermittently after passing douible digits but put it away for good when they killed her off (didn't even bother to buy the followup story to see the obligatory revenge). Just didn't see how the series could hold my interest after tat. And judging by some of the talkback I've read herein, it doesn't seem like I've missed much. Is the writer kidding or dide they actually give her the back story of bearing the baby of the green goblin???? That brought on an out-loud W-T-F. I do not want to judge without having read it (and I won't), but I gotta say that sounds like somebody's run fresh out of ideas. That is not merely kumping the shark, my friend. That is blowing the shark while your grandmother teabags it.

The bestthing Gwen Stacey ever did was DIE

    by Steve Rogers

She was a boring, 2-dimensional character otherwise. The Spidey fans who grew up rading her see her as this inviolate bastion of sweetness - pfff, whatever. She was shrill and dull and boring and it was good when she died. She freed Peter up to go out with some decent, interesting chicks. I'm sick of hearing about her, frankly. Fuck Gwen Stacey! (which I would do, if she looked like BDH. Which she didn't).

Have any of you ever seen Sam Raimi?

    by MrBoinfoint

He casts these actresses because he's a realist, and they are about as attractive as he could reasonably get if he were Peter Parker. Don't get me wrong, Kristen and Bryce are cute, but he's trying to ground the series in reality, and in reality, they are not mind-numbingly hot, just cute enough.

    Running out of web fluid

    by Immortal_Fish

Look, this is REALLY simple. It's a weakness that humanizes the protagonist, grounding them in reality. It is a sorely missing component in the movie franchise that I am sad to see foregone. I can get over it, and have, but it's a missing necessary component to character adaptation, much akin to Wolverine going from stunted ugly 60-something to tall handsome 30-something. Meaning, I can understand the adaptation, but I don't have to like it. There were plenty fan-based rationalizations to the 3M webshooter approach. The most creative idea I read was how the organic shooters were erratic. It was only with the ingenious intervention of Parker disassembling the components of a lighter to control the web's spray that made adaptable film sense to me. Why wasn't this followed up? Instead, we got "genetically engineered" spiders that fled upon bite instead of a radioactive one that died upon bite. Where are the other Spidermen? What role will Topher fill? Things that make ya go "Hmm...!"

Since the second Spiderman was set some time after the first one, rather than picking up where S1 left off, my guess is that the third one will be set a year or two after the second. MJ will have left Peter and he'll have a new girlfriend, Gwen. Gwen will die 1/2-2/3 into the flick, turning this into a revenge movie. Peter and MJ will reunite at the end of the film.
