Yet more classic horror remake news, this time about BLACK CHRISTMAS' young cast!

Published at:  Jan 17, 2006 2:14:39 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here... I love Bob Clark's Christmas movies: A CHRISTMAS STORY and BLACK CHRISTMAS. Both are perfect and fit in their times and places. I don't want to see either remade. Thank the Movie Gods that there's no talk of a CHRISTMAS STORY remake, but the long talked about BLACK CHRISTMAS remake (helmed by Glen Morgan of FINAL DESTINATION and WILLARD fame) is apparently going forward full steam ahead.

Production Weekly has the news that Michelle Trachtenberg (from Buffy and Nickelodeon TV fame) is starring in the film alongside some other youngsters named Katie Cassidy, Oliver Hudson and Mary Elizabeth. I don't have anything against this cast, but thinking back on the original... I mean, you had John Saxon kicking ass and taking names, Keir Dullea (2001), a young Andrea Martin, Margot Kidder before SUPERMAN and insanity entered her life and the amazingly beautiful Olivia Hussey in the lead.

That movie was lightning in a bottle, predating John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN by 4 years, and is still one of the best examples of the slasher genre. I'm not automatically predisposed to hate on a remake, but this one isn't sitting well with me.

And by people I mean teens that eat this shit up. That demographic has always been the thing that kept the genre alive.

    Such an old cast.

    by salvatoregravano

In keeping with today's targeting at "hip modern audience", this should instead involve a 13-year old detective tracking down the 16-year old serial killer who murdered the 6-day old children babysat by the 8-year old heroine of the picture.

    by thedarkshape

I liked Final Destination (not so much The One), so I have faith in Wong as director. The original's a brilliant film, so there's little chance this will top it -- still, as a worse case scenario, hopefully this'll get people to check out the '74 flick on DVD.

    Billy! Billy!

    by jedibobster

Of course 'teens' eat this stuff up, but up til now most teen generations have had their own original horror movies to love and call their own. This lot can barely name a film that isn't a remake.
It's not that Black Xmas is a film that the majority hold sacrosanct, many having not seen it at all. The remake will probably be fairly able, ala The Amityville Horror remake, but soon get lost in the annuls of time.
It's not as if slasher horrors have strong stories, it's about building up the suspense, piling on the atmosphere and a few good death scenes scattered throughout. Surely there are enough original slasher pics begging to be made. Black Christmas hardly has a cracking story, so why bother remaking it? Make something original instead. It's not as if, for the masses, that Black Christmas has much name recognition like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or even The Hills Have Eyes.
Still, on saying that, without remakes we wouldn't have The Thing (1982) The Fly (1986) or The Blob (1988). But has a horror remake not of the 80s been better than the original? Dawn of the Dead (2004) made a fair stab at it but other than that I can't think of any. Sure The Amityville Horror and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes didn't stink, but they lacked a grit, a realism. Too slick by far.

And John Saxon is a legend.

    It's "lightning" not "lightening"

    by scienceman

"Lightening" is what happens if you add some lamps to a dark room and turn them on. Actually, I guess that would be "brightening." Why do so many people not understand this?

    Trachtenberg

    by lando griffin

I usually don't like my women looking like stick figures but Trachtenberg does it for me. I've seen that pic that Production Weekly has up on their site before, that and the screen caps of her in the bikini in Eurotrip have given me many good nights sleep. Then I remember in one episode of Six Feet Under she made some comment about letting Keith fuck her in the ass - priceless. Harriet The Spy/Dawn Summers is all grown up.

    On the bright side...

    by larxtongue

...not that there really IS a bright side here, but hopefuly this will encourage people to check out the original Black Christmas if they haven't already. They remade When a Stranger Calls, which borrowed from a couple major themes in Black Christmas, so maybe this is just a "vindication" remake, hehe. It's still probably going to suck hard.

    by doc_mccoy

The concept of this movie is too soft. The original was great for its time because of the execution... I can't imagine the execution of this remake (either writing or directing) isn't anything but hacky and slick. Though I'd rather see this than HOSTEL.

    by charlie & tex

Another penis up the backside of a perfect little movie. We watch it every Christmas Eve to really get us into the spirit of the festive season, and to see it plundered for the sake of a quick buck is annoying at best. Let's see them use the word "cunt" as liberally as they did in the original, as it would give them a tough enough time in an "R", let alone a PG-13. The only light thrown on the enigmatic ending of Black Christmas is on the commentary found on the DVD.

    Andrea Martin? Really?

    by anna valerious

I was in fangirl mode when I saw her as one of the little old ladies in "The Producers"...anyway, Oliver Hudson is Goldie Hawn's son, if it hasn't already been mentioned. And Katie Cassidy is David Cassidy's daughter, who goes by Kaci when she performs as a singer.

  • What's the most likely target for a remake? Halloween seems pretty obvious. Good time to "reboot" the franchise as the kids say. Then there's It's Alive, Last House on the Left, Rabid, The Sentinel, Demon Seed, The Brood, Eaten Alive, The Car, The Wicker Man, Food of the Gods.. Personally, I'd like to see someone tackle a remake of stuff like Laserblast, Humanoids from the Deep, Tentacles, and the Giant Spider Invasion, but that's just me.

    "Laserblast" remake?! That would ROCK.

    by anna valerious

They are remaking "The Wicker Man", but they unfortunately threw out the character's integrity by not making him a virgin in this one...erm, isn't that WHY he was sacrificed? Anyway, if anyone remade "Phantom of the Paradise" that would--oh, wait, I'm working on my own modern-day Phantom story. Never mind.

    PG13 Horror movies

    by homer sexual

What? The Equalizer's role in Wicker Man is not going to be a virgin? Then, what is the point? It won't even have a point, I guess. I hate to be such an old fart, but God knows these PG13 remakes are the worst. And they never really make that much money either. I mean, Saw II, which was R-rated and somewhat satisfying, certainly outgrossed Amityville, Fog, etc. Now every "horror" movie is some limp crap. No scares at all, but does help me build my DVD collection. I got the Sleepaway Camp DVDs last Halloween and they have rocked not only my world, but that of other (younger) friends who have also seen them. Nothing against Michelle Trachtenberg. She'd probably be willig to show some skin and do a real, scary, bloody, t&a flick. It's the suits, man! (and I am a suit:()

Yep, Homer, that's what I've heard.

    by anna valerious

Apparently, whoever wrote the script is an idiot that thinks everyone is getting laid nowadays. But, blame the crackdowns from movie theaters not letting teenagers into R movies. Thus, the studio will chop it up for PG-13 and put out an unrated version on DVD. Call me crazy, but I do like some remakes. Prolly because of all the eye candy in them-Chris Klein, John Barrowman, Tom Welling, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray...I'm quite guilty of writing a lead role for this fellow- http://tinyurl.com/bsqjn (left) http://tinyurl.com/cfsjy Prolly because women nowadays would rather see a guy who looks pretty damn good in eyeliner and spiked hair rather than someone who dresses like an evil member of "Battle of the Planets".

    by anna valerious

I know she was also in such legitamite stuff as "Roxanne" (Where Steve Martin told her it was one of his favorite films) and a Sci-Fi movie with a very young Corbin Allred, Richard Kind as a bumbling magician, and the always amusing David Warner as the bad guy/young boy's mentor. I forgot the name of it, but it was on MST3K and the beginning had Pearl joining the bots in their wisecracking. (On the unwashed masses) "Bring in da noise, bring in da funk!" "Well, they've certainly got the funk covered." :P
