Romero to shoot balls to the wall unrated Zombie death carnage for RESIDENT EVIL!!!!!

Published at:  Sep 29, 1998 4:34:16 AM CDT

Oh god, please let this be true. Please somebody don't betray Romero on this. Let him go absolutely friggin nuts, over the top death gore mayhem on this flick. Decapitations, brain splatters, disembowelments, dismemberments, come on let's just see some rauncy NOT FOR ALL AUDIENCES Zombie Death!!!! Sigh.... Sorry folks, I was brought up on The 'living dead' films since I was knee high to the grups (grown ups) and by the age of 3 was applauding the little girl killing her Mom with the little thing that spreads that stuff you put bricks together with. (Hey, it's 6:35am and I haven't slept in 31 hours, cut me some slack) Here's the report...

Hey, it's Crash15 again, this time I've got some info on Resident Evil
straight from Electronic Gaming Monthly, well, here it is:

"The video game-to-movie adaptation everyone wants to know more
about (apart from Lara Croft's big-screen debut) is Resident Evil: The
Movie.

Capcom and Constantine Films, the movies production company, have
hired George Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead and The Dark
Half among others, to write and direct. Production is at a very early
stage, and a location, stars and a time frame for the film's release
have not been determined yet.

We recently spoke with Romero (look for the full interview next
issue), who told us that Capcom hopes to have the movie ready for the
release of the third game in the series, which at this point has not
been announced.

As for the movie, Romero says that it will be a true horror film
targeted at an older audience, those who are fans of the game. "I'm
hoping that it can just be dark and chilling like the game--good
zombies, good makeup, good effects. I've had the advantage, doing my
zombie films, of not having to have them rated. I think for the U.S.
release it's going to take the chance of letting it go unrated," he
said. "Our plan is to shoot it balls out, so somewhere in the world
there will be a harder version of the thing, and maybe we can put it out
on a Director's Cut or release it in certain countries where
restrictions aren't as tight."

The plot will be based on the events of the first Resident Evil
game.

This is certainly good news for fans, as it looks like this time
there will finally be a movie based on a video game that's made for the
fans and not for kids.

    HELLS YEAH!

    by leviat

This is exactly what I've been hoping for this movie to become. At first I was a bit taken aback, worried it would turn into "Super Mario Bros", but as soon as Romero signed on, I saw hope. Now, I am anxiously awaiting this release! Let's just hope that some other companies take the hint, and stop making "cutsie" versions of game characers!

    by icky

All out baby! After watching SPR this summer and knowing the MPAA rated that "R", I don't see the problem with them giving anything else extra gory an R. I just hope they have a shot of a zombie eating the large intestines like spaghetti!

    I very much doubt it!

    by gag halfrunt

ehh, since when did people start getting excited about video game to movie translations. With the possible exception of mortal combat, they've all been pants. And no way will the suits let Romero do his usual "thing" with Residant Evil...even though the game an 18s rating, lots of kids played, and they're the ones who'll want to see this the most. Nope, this'll be PG13, mark my words.

    Resident Evil

    by naivete sucks

Do I have to mentio that The Dark Half S*U*C*K*E*D? It not only takes George Romero to make a good movie but also a great effects artist (such as Tom Savini - from the Dead films) and a great cinematographer, cast (Timothy Hutton killed 'The Dark Half'), budget, etc. Just because George "The Master" Romero (and believe me, I'm a huge fan..) is making the film, does not necessarially mean that it will be any good.

GOD DAMMIT LET THIS BE TRUE

    by shaman

Ok..I am not asking for much here. A fourth evil dead film. A x-men movie that stays true to form. But dammit, THEY HAVE TO LET THIS BE TRUE. No ifs ands or buts. Look Romero in any form is Romero. He has enough'make the hairs stand up on neck' talent to pull this off. And look back, all the rumors only started when Romero attached his name to the vehicle. I could see this happening simply because if they start with the scissors, Romero would pull his name. He would do it too, and it would be a nightmare for the production company and the suits. One of their key selling points is his name and his name is tagged master of the zombies. He could push this, saying unrated is the only way to go and if the studio balks, blackmail. Look if he is hot enough for this project, he would do it too. Of course, they may snip it but I will be the first in line to get the unrated DVD of RE. BUT PLEASE SUITS UP THERE, LET THIS BE A ROMERO MASTERPIECE. He will get the butts in the seats and even more or total gore!!!!

There's a zombie in my ass!

    by jj

George Romero or not, there is no way to revitalize a tired genre. Flesh eating zombies are as old as the crust in my grandmother's underpants (and that joke). There are no taboos left for film so what the hell can Georgie boy do for "Resident Evil" that, say, Pee Wee Herman couldn't do? Not a damn fuckin' thing!
Maybe they need a flesh eating prostitute in graphic detail! There is something as original as "Frankenhooker"! Now someone get this zombie out of my ass!

    That's A-More

    by anton_sirius

You got your Italian directors mixed up. The guy who should direct RE is Lucio Fulci, of course. Dario should wait for his daughter Asia to become a big star in the States and then use her clout to finish off the Mothers trilogy with a proper Hollywood budget. And then Michele Soavi can adapt a Jonathan Carroll novel and everyone will be happy.

    A few points...

    by severen

One, this is nigh on ancient news now, having been not only reported on Dark Horizons and The Onion (among others) but even on this very site (probably where EGM got the info themselves truth be known, they are as has been said above one of the slackest, most frequently wrong games mag on the stands...they will seemingly print pretty much any rumour without the slightest hint of validation and present it as fact).

Secondly word has it (it's 7 am here and my memory is somewhat foggy so I can't remember where I heard this but I think it was a local, australian games mag...so take it with a grain of salt) that Bruce Payne (Passenger 57) was already cast to star as 'Wesker'.

Finally what ever happened to the Return Of The Living Dead special edition that was supposed to be happening...anyone hear anything lately?

They built the world largest, and
most scary "Haunted House" style attraction in Japan. If you look for it on the web, It's called
BIOHAZZARD. They changed the name to Res- evil in the states.

    The Onion Interview

    by clarence beaks

The most telling segment of the Romero interview on the Onion's AV site was where he said he'd like to do this movie as an ALIENS-type, "balls-out" action film. Fine by me. I'm just waiting for TWILIGHT OF THE DEAD, or whatever the hell he's gonna call it (and like I feel with the new Star Wars film, he can call it HECKYL AND JECKYL: MAGPIES MAGNIFIQUE for all I care. It ain't the title I'm concerned with, it's the content.)

    by djdood

God I hope this is true.

We haven't had a true Romero-style shock since Dead Alive.

I wanna be grossed-out by a movie again (and I don't mean poop-eating John Waters gross). I'm talking morbid, dead rise up and rip the living to shreds, no camera cut aways, in-your-face, Bub's on a rampage gross.

    by sicuv uyall

Hey, isn't Leo Fulci another one of Dario Argento's aliases? I thought he had a bunch of different pseudonyms for each genre of films he made? Am i wrong? Who cares? I just wanted to write something. Think i'll watch Dawn of the Dead.

    by mars13

Harry, I hate to poop on the parade but I recently read some contradictory news in another videogame mag(I believe it was Ultra Gameplayers). They were saying Romero IS NOT directing RE anymore but merely producing it(supposedly
to free him up so he can work on the next DEAD picture). I don't know how good your source is, but I certainly hope that s/he's right & that I'm wrong.

    Lucio Fulci?!

    by dismantle

Are you incredibly stupid? Lucio Fulci cant direct it... because hes dead! Duh! And as for zombies being a dead genre... are you even more moronic than the other guy?! Where the Hell do you think the Resident Evil game came from?! "Dawn of the fucking dead" it got everything off of Romero's ideas. Did the game do poorly because of zombies being a dead genre? NO, it just seems that way to you cuz your a stupid fruitcake who probably like cheezy vampires or something... now THATS old.
