Published at:  Jan 05, 2006 1:17:26 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

What’s that? You say NBC’s fresh new episodes of “Will & Grace” and “Four Kings” hold little appeal for ya?

Well, have a gander at this little slice of heaven: Turner Classic Movies is colorcasting nine features directed by Hayao Miyazaki over the next four Thursdays.

They’re running commercial-free, but I don’t know yet if TCM is cutting out the dirty parts.

The rundown:

Jan. 5

Spirited Away (2001) 8 p.m.

Princess Mononoke (1997) 10:15 p.m.

Jan. 12

Nausicaa of the Valley (1984)) 8 p.m.

Castle in the Sky (1986) 10 p.m.

Jan. 19

My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 8 p.m.

Porco Rosso (1992) 9:30 p.m.

Whisper of the Heart (1995) 11:15 p.m

Jan. 26

Only Yesterday (1991) 8 p.m.

Pom Poko (1994) 10:15 p.m.

    Totally agree - that's wonderful!

    by viola123

Thanks for telling us. That's awesome. And the first night, I've seen both of them, but it will be awesome to see them together (if I can). The following Thursdays, I'll have to plan though since it will eventually conflict with my "Smallville" - and new eppies return in one week. *sigh*, I can't wait for the Eppy 11. But anyway, on-topic - yay for Turner Classics' presentation! Miyazaki is a master.

    'colorcasting'?

    by newc0253

if you're gonna make up words, herc, at least do what Variety does and make them distinctive: e.g. "Turner Classic Movies is splarg-fasting nine fnarks mifted by Hayao Miyazaki over the next four Churmsdays". see? whacky!

they should call it 'Must-See Miyazaki'

    by newc0253

it will be a bigger hit than Second-Chance-Scorcese.

    Colorcast my Skein

    by scratcher

I agree - AICN readers HATE Variety-speak! What made you think it was a good idea to start writing that way? Colorcast?? Were you worried that we might think they would show them in B&W? Idiotic.

TCM is the best reason to have cable!

    by kentucky colonel

Hell, the Meriam Cooper doc last month was the bomb. Now this! I hope AMC chokes to death on it's own scat. TCM, and to a lesser degree FMC are the most TiVo'ed channels in my house. Got to go set the Season Pass to Miyazaki!

    by kentucky colonel

TCM is great for not fucking with the movies it shows. They should be whole and uncut (heh-heh...I said "hole and uncut" heh-heh)

no 'Graves of the Fireflies' ??

    by tko

That will always be my favorite Miyazaki film. It carried such an emotional weight and I'm not afraid to admit that it was the only cartoon that made me cry like a little girly-man.

Grave of the Firelies isn't Miyazaki

    by lujho

It's a Ghibli film, but Miyazaki isn't the director.

    Not all are Miyazaki

    by treadwell

Whisper and Yesterdays were not directed by Miyazaki, so these would actually be "Ghibli Thursdays". Not that it matters--it's all great stuff.

Rock on. This was the first anime I ever saw that was over 30 minutes longs. Does anyone know if they will be subbed or dubbed?

NOTE: All films rebroadcast subtitled late night!

    by robogeek.com

FYI, the showtimes listed are for the Disney English-dubbed versions of the films, though every film will be rebroadcast late night in Japanese w. English subtitles. And all films are being shown letterboxed! (More info at robogeek.com.)

    P.S. to treadwell

    by robogeek.com

Actually, all the films being shown were written, directed and/or produced by Miyazaki, so they are very much Miyazaki films. "Whisper of the Heart" is particularly significant for having been written, storyboarded and produced by Miyazaki, and directed by his late protege (and intended successor) Yoshikushi Kondo, who was the animation director on "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Princess Mononoke". (It's also the first Ghibli film to use any CG.)

Looks like the reruns are subbed

    by cz

Despite conflicting information flying around, it looks like the second showing of each film will be the subtitled version.

I personally don't think the dubbed versions are that bad

    by ribbons

I know there are a lot of "purists" out there to whom that statement seems heretical, but they're really not. Certainly not to the extent that I'd call them "fucked up."

    Wonderful!

    by covenant

Not all of these films are genuine classics - Pom Poko leaves something to be desired, as does Porco Rosso - but even lesser Miyazaki is better than most of Disney's or Dreamworks' recent batches of animated excrement. Let's see more quality classic animation on TCM--and let's see if we can have nights just for foreign classics.

    All are dubbed

    by scratcher

Since his films are animated before dialogue is recorded, you might say that they're all dubbed either way, Japanese or English. The only real difference is the translation. They're mostly visual films, so I'd rather be able to devote all my eye-time to watching and not reading. Spirited Away, for example, is MUCH more enjoyable without having to read along.

    dirty parts:

    by newc0253

i think they're referring to the sex scene in the unrated version mononoke-hime when a naked princess mononoke repeatedly slaps ashitaka, shouting "what's my name, bitch?"

    I use to be a sub-tittle puriest.

    by digitaldong

But hell, I got into anime way back in the day where, well lets face it, the english dubs always sucked. Period, end of conversation there. There was a time I would only accept sub-titled anime. However it seems in the past few years not only did english dubbing get alot better, but now alot of titles and series are being re-dubbed along with 5.1 sound and cleaned up cells. Mononoke was the first one I can remember where I've seen it alot of times and never watched it in Japanese. However its true Miyazaki animates them first then adds dialog so that doesn;t really take anything away from the original work. I do remember an uproar of the re-dubbing of Akira in which people wanted the old english dubs which were pretty sucky-sucky. And as much as I love GITS:Innocence, I can't wait for an english dubbed version so I can keep my eyes on the action, and not the dialog. Also i can't belive TCM took out the tentical rape scene out of Mononoke. lol
