Is Disney releasing TARZAN this December' Plus a clip from the film!

Published at:  Sep 28, 1998 2:53:27 AM CDT

Ok, we know about the "one ups-manship" going on between DISNEY and DREAMWORKS. Afterall Dreamworks did move ANTZ up to a month and a half ahead of A BUG'S LIFE. Of course PDI just happened to get the work done, ohhh, let's say.. half a year early, and there was a empty slot in the schedule. But the article from REUTERS below seems to indicate that TARZAN is going to be released this Christmas. Personally I believe that this was just some bad reporting at Reuters, or in a press release. But we'll see... Personally I'd rather Disney play nice, but if they do release TARZAN this holiday season, we film goers will be getting one Great animated film and on really really good animated film. But I believe it's just bs. Also down below this report is a link that has the TARZAN clip that was seen on ROSIE last week!

Harry, I was reading the AOL Entertainment News, on which I found this
article
from Reuters about Phil Collins finishing up the music for Disney's Tarzan,
and it said the studio is planning to release the film *this holiday
season*!
Lemme just do a copy-paste and let you see it for yourself...

Phil Collins Records Songs for New Disney Film

GENEVA (Reuters) - British rock star Phil Collins has recorded songs in four
languages for a new cartoon film for the U.S. Walt Disney studios, the
Geneva
newspaper Info-Dimanche reported Sunday. It said Collins, who lives in
western
Switzerland, had completed recording for the film, ``Tarzan,'' in English,
French, German and Spanish at studios in Geneva last week. Collins sings the
theme for the film, ``The Song of Tarzan,'' as well as other songs, Info-
Dimanche said. The film is due to be released in late December for the
Christmas holidays.

Any truth to this? Looks like Disney's one-upping Dreamworks here in their
"We-got-our-movie-out-before-you" thing!

Todd

And now for that clip of TARZAN...

    They'd better not.

    by badash

They'd better not. It's reasons like that is why I hate disney, besides their attempts to ruin their greatest efforts (Hunchback+Gargoyles, Tarzan+Rosie, etc.) with things that don't appeal to anyone above the age of 4. But it's their oneupsmanship that irks me. For example: Last year Anastasia came out, and had that date set in stone for months beforehand. But just a short while before, Disney places The little Mermaid a week before, with a "limited release" to draw in the kids, many of whom already own the thing on video, and with little to no difference in quality! The result? Most parents, unlike us fans that see every movie, didn't have the money to spend on both movies, and Disney is much more trusted than the at the time unproven 20th Century fox animation studios. Despite the fact that Anastasia was a better movie, Anastasia ended up barely breaking even, while The little Mermaid added another 30 million. Not to mention the video sales. Dreamworks placed Antz a full month and a half ahead of Bugs' life, and anyone that thinks that Antz is going to muscle in on Bug's life's grosses need only to look at the similar battle this summer against Deep Impact and Armageddon. And regardless of whether Disney releases Tarzan, or they're old Beauty and the Beast, it takes away from the only animated film yet created that truly deserves to be given the title "epic." Of course, The Prince of Egypt. By itself, Prince, if it is as good as we know it will be, probably won't do Titanic grosses, but 200-300 million is certainly not out of the question. But with Disney's stubborn refusal to open the field to all, Prince won't pass 100. Most common moviegoers will choose... and a G rated cartoon won't scare them off like a movie that might make them think. Of course, that's just my opinion. CS79

    Tarzan Christmas Release

    by houdini

    Harry,

It's impossible. Reuters probably just did some crappy reporting like all those major news organizations are wont to do lately. Disney already moved Mighty Joe Young out of summer to compete with Prince of Egypt. they wouldn't compete against themselves as well. Or would they? Congrats on your EW mention in the issue with lauryn Hill on the cover.

    Later,

    Houdini

    Tarzan

Relax, there's no way the film can be ready by Christmas. Anastasia better than Little Mermaid, I'll remember that the next time I need a really good laugh.

Far be it from Reuters to actually do some accurate reporting every now and then. Please trust me when I say that AP and Reuters employ generally lousy writers who are afraid that a little research might broaden their story.

Eisner himself on Rosie's show said the movie would be released next summer.

    Great vs. Good

    by baxter

Yes, Harry--One GREAT film and one GOOD film. TARZAN is the GREAT one--to be sure. I've seen 'em both. POE is a good evening out, though.

    Tarzan 60% complete

    by thomas moser

    The article is simply inaccurate.
Tarzan is about 60% complete, as of last month.
It is set for a June 1999 release, in the tradition of the last 10 films.

    Tarzan@POE

    by rifferus

Ok, so POE is a REMAKE of the 10 Commandments, and THAT'S why it's better than Tarzan???? OOOOOhkay.......First off, Prince of Egypt bears as much resemblance to the 10 Commandments as Beauty and the Beast (TV) bears to Beauty and The Beast (Disney film), but let's just assume you're correct. What you've implied is that Tarzan is better because it ISN'T a remake....of perhaps let's say Greystoke? Or the early Tarzan movies, or the Tarzan cartoon from filmation, or the Tarzan serials or the....YOu get the idea. If you're gonna have criteria to base the value of a movie on, let's at least try to have valid criteria, like the plot, characters (designs for animation), possibly music and emotional punch, none of which can really be judged until the movie is released...*S*

    Egypt and My Left Nut

    by jeffrey choadtzenberg

Frankly, I don't care if "Prince of Egypt" has the most stunning animation of all time. I still unzip myself and wave a moist nut at it. Only someone with a massive ego like Katzenberg would release something like that (oh, and does Media Whore Harry's "objective" opinion have anything to do with the fact that he was wined and dined by Charles Martin Smith's balder brother have anything to do with that glowing anticipation?) I say, Tarzan, bring it on!!!!! Shit, not only am I more excited about Mighty Joe Young than the animated story of Moses, but I'd be more excited about something from Troma! What's next? "The Animated Hijinks of Saint Sebastian?" "Abraham Seduced By His Daughter w/Elton John Songs" "Jesus Nailed to the Cross in Beautiful 3D CGI"? A big left and right nut to Katzenwhore and company. Keep on sucklin' away at that teat, Harry.

    POE

    by truth

The only thing Disney ever does is make fun animated movies that brings color to an already dull life. When will they get the picture. The only reason why adult audiences laughed probably at POE is because they can't take anything seriously anymore.POE is a great animated film from Katzenberg. No other animated company would have even attempted it.If the person up above (whose as dumb as his gay boyfriend)believes Tarzan is better than POE then the whole world is made up of lazy freaks. And that's just not going to happen.Get a life people and stop wishing for fun all the time.Tarzan good animated film.POE one of the greatest animated films ever made.Forget the idiots.See it for yourself.DUMB GENERATION X!.You're ripe for war material.Put all of ya'll in the front line and we'll have a great Saving Private Ryan film again.Yeah!

    Sheesh

    by peterp

OK. I know that people get sick of Disney fanatics giving a movie accolades before it opens. But why doesn't the same hold for DW? I mean, not *everybody* on this board can have seen it, right? So, just because it will be PG-13 (or whatever)...does that make it a good movie? I want to reserve judgement until I see it. Sure it'll be different and serious but that doesn't mean it will be good.
