Stare into the eyes of the GHOST RIDER!

Published at:  Dec 20, 2005 4:31:55 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here about to head off to MUNICH... but before I take off I thought I'd throw up this link for you good folks. I really like Mark Steven Johnson having met him for the first time at Comic-Con last summer. He's a super nice guy who has a genuine love for what he's doing and the properties he gets to adapt. Having said that I wasn't impressed with the trailer or the footage for the film shown at Comic-Con. However none of that footage had effects work that was anywhere close to being final for the title character.

Now up on the Ghost Rider website they have a button called "The Rider Revealed" which has 10 seconds or so of the ol' flaming skull guy. I like a lot. In fact, I'd go so far as to label this "kickass." I hope they really refine the flick and make all the effects as good as this (or better) in the year and change they have until release (Feb. 16th 2007 according to the site). Just a word of warning, I had to install a new Flash upgrade to even view the site to click on that button, so watch out for that if you don't have the newest Flash on your 'puter.

I'd love for nothing more than to see a bad motherfucker with a flaming skull for a head beat up on some crooks when this hits the screen. I just hope the Marvel people learned their lesson on DAREDEVIL and will release Johnson's full cut first, not a character development-less hollow version. Here's the link to a few seconds of the Rider! Thanks to "Brownie" for the heads up!

That's how he looks in the comics, so you can't fault them for that. Some will say he needs to be updated, some will love that they kept the traditional look. I'll wait and see how the story unfolds, if at all.

If it wasn't from the director of Daredevil. I have been told there are people who like that movie, but it's been a couple years and I still can't comprehend it. In fact, I flipped to it on TV yesterday and discovered that it is actually even more ridiculous than I remembered. I'm all for studios giving chances to visionary directors even if one of their projects fails, but come on. This is a guy who has never made a movie that is even halfway good, and especially not in this genre. Shouldn't people be jumping on this guy before they jump on Brett Ratner (or at the same time)?

Daredevil director's cut wasn't any better

    by mrcere

Look, I love ol Hornhead as much and probably a hell of a lot more than almost anybody. The Daredevil movie was not all that good, director's cut or not. Having Coolio around as a lame Turk character didn't make the film better. The problem with the movie is a bunch of plot lines and points jumbled together, trying to tell all of Daredevil lore in one shot, a charismaticless lead (I don't care how big a fan he was, he wasn't good for the film) and messing with some of the DD lore. I don't mind a tweaks here or there but replacing stuff with film cliches and formuliac crap that is NOT an improvement hurts the film. It isn't a horrible film and some things work, but not enough to distinguish the film from the pack which left audiences feeling like they had seen it all before - because they had.

I remember he also whipped it out straight & stiff & he used it as a spear or at least as a big-ass stick to beat someone with. I get excited thinking of the comic but just can't get my hopes up w/ the Daredevil director, you know the guy who did such a poor job I can't remember his name? Good God I hated Daredevil.

But really, not too many out there are doing CGI Characters quite as well as Weta. Between what they've done with Gollum and Kong, when I think of a complicated effect involving a CGI character, they're going to be the first people that come to my mind, kind of like how if I want a big mechanical monster I'm going to think Winston Studios. It's what they have shown they do the best. And if you're going to try and get a guy with a flamming skull, and actually have me not luaghing my ass off but taking it seriously... then it's going to take the best working their asses off. This shit is really hard to pull off right. I don't think Weta is the cure all for everything though. Peace.

  • ..and the people who still heap hate on the EE only expose themselves as haters, or just haven't seen it, plain and simple. fact is it didn't matter if DD had been the best movie ever made, the Ben Affleck penis-envy bunch would have still claimed it sucked. get over it dudes, he could take your girlfriend away in a second if he wanted, but he doesn't want to and won't. still, she's going to leave you anyway because you're a lame lay and your dicks are obviously microscopic, which explains the bitterness. i was as disappointed as anyone in the theatrical version, being that DD was the one comic i collected as a kid and still have over 100 issues all pre-1984, and the theatrical cut came across as hollow and cheesy. the EE is a different movie, a much better movie. i still can't figure out why the studio hacked things up so bad, since the fight scenes were SO much better in the EE and still wouldn't have merited an R rating. plus, the story and characters were much better realized in the EE, paying a more fitting homage to the source material. the one thing that wasn't improved on that needed it was the score. if Johnson is given the freedom to release his cut of Ghost Rider into theatres i think his work on DD:EE is proof that any fan of the genre who isn't predisposed to dislike it will get their money's worth.

    Are we still defending Daredevil?

    by mcvamp

It was tripe. Ripped off the first Batman...the main villain now doubles as the killer of our hero's parents, leading to the big "you killed my parents" reveal at the end. Then they recycled Batman Returns, where the anti-heroine is "killed" but then we get the "she's ALIVE!" tease. Elektra is a rich kid "Ninjette" and don't get me started on THAT movie. Anyway...true to the source material? How? Only a scant handful of things rung true--Jack Murdock, Ben Urich and miraculously, the Kingpin. Arg...with almost the same cast, someone could have done a three-movie arc...establish DD and Kingpin in the first movie, do the Elektra story and end on a sad note, then for the third movie, Born Again/Fall of the Kingpin. Not hard, really. But no. They combined the first BATMAN with BATMAN RETURNS, skimmed on the budget and spit out Daredevil. Shame.

What the fuck are you mental midgets talking about? Cage was nominated for an Oscar for ADAPTATION on a short bit ago, a role he was brilliant in. And as for box office, here's a little tidbit for you as well: NATIONAL TREASURE did nearly $200 million in the U.S. alone -- did well overseas, too -- and was a definite out of the park hit for Cage, Bruckheimer and Disney. And the DVD sold great. So much so that Disney has ALREADY greenlit a sequel. Look, if you want to piss all over GHOST RIDER, that's your choice. Personally, I'm looking forward to it. But as you unzip your fly to piss away, try not to post outright lies or ridiculous comments to back up your pulled out of your ass facts. completely cgi comic book movies

    by oliviscus

Eventually they will get so good with CGI that they will stop splicing the effects into live action movies. Final Fantasy was a step in the right direction. Does anyone not read a comic book because it doesn't look realistic enough? The artwork is about energy, action and emotion - not recognizable A-list actors trying to be comic book characters. I love Nic, but have a feeling the best parts of GR will be the CGI. Which just makes me think the whole deal should be CGI. Totally off subject: Does anyone really want to see a live action DragonballZ movie - or would you rather see a kick ass CGI DBZ flick? The animation (not the game play) in Tenkaichi is fantastic and is completely true to the source material. Why fuck that up with Jet Li in a wig?

I haven't seen the director's cut but I can't imagine any possible way that adding more footage in would salvage it. Yeah I'm sure it has more character development that makes it flow better or something but it will still have those ridiculous costumes, the embarassing Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face style performance by Colin Farrel, the silly looking CGI flips, etc. Your assumptions are wrong at least in my case - I don't really mind Ben Affleck in general. I also don't have a great knowledge of the comic to be pissy about (although I loved the Elektra graphic novels in college and Jennifer Garner sure didn't remind me of that character in any way). I just thought it was a tasteless combination of wannabe "The Crow" style and corny Joel Schumacher bombast. I guess I just don't get it. It's not as bad as Spawn or Batman and Robin or arguably League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but I think it's in the lower ranks of comic book movies. But who knows, maybe Ghost Rider will be better. (Hopefully a LOT better.)

Great handle. :^) Now, then, to business: financial success does not a good actor make. Let us not forget that drivel like "The Pacifier" was a huge financial success. That doesn't make Vin Diesel a worthwhile actor. Second point: the fact that Cage was nominated for an Oscar in "Adaptation" means very little. Let us not forget that Marisa, Halle and Julia -- the trifecta of nearly-talentless Oscar winners. "Adaptation" was a brilliant movie that was, if anything, hindered by Cage's obvious performance. A truly talented actor could have pushed that film into true classic status.

    by hallmitchell

A sequel has to be made for that one. Just to correct the errors.
As Brian Michael Bendis said, they crammed too much into the one movie.
    Mel Gibson Directing.
Ben Affleck as Bullesye. Bullseye with comic book outfit. No simple leather jacket.
Script. take your pick, Frank Miller or Kevin Smith.

Daredevil. Kiefer Sutherland or Jared Leto.

I think I might have just blown my own mind.

    Reply to Talkback

  • ..the biggest difference between the onscreen Bullseye and the comic version is the costume. in fact, Farrell would have needed to take it up a notch to better match the comic version of Bullseye. if i was going to complain about a character potrayal not matching up with the comic origin it would be Elektra not being enough of a hardass, or badass, but i can live with Garner's portayal. all in all, i think the DD:EE is pretty true to the source material, much more than Burton's Batman, which was silly and cartoonish, imo.

Mark Steven Johnson may be a dipshit, a happy-go-lucky dipshit, but a dipshit nonetheless. But his talents far exceed those of Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn (who are writing our treasured X3), so at least he doesn't represent the evil people at FOX anymore. He respects the material, he doesn't just SAY he does... as those two do for the obvious paycheck. Well, I don't really care, I'll check it out simply because it exists, but I'd like to get a good Ghost Rider film. My prediction: Very little story, a hell of a lot of characters, some strong effects, and some terrible ones. Essentially Daredevil 2.

Of course it's going to look CG. Have fun with it; it's a comic book movie, not an adaptation of War and Peace! I can't wait to see this. Judging from the size of the talkback a lot of people are interested. There are a lot of other comic heroes out there besides the trio you mentioned that deserve a chance in the spotlight. Ghost Rider is one of them. He was one of my favorite "anti-heroes" right up with the Punisher. I'm pretty pissed they pushed it back a year away, but if they spend the time to polish it up it might be worth it. And on top of that, they nailed the look for Ghost Rider...

I've never been a big comicbook reader, but since no one has answered your question, I'll give it a shot. As I've always understood it Spawn is a huge GR ripoff. Scopion from Mortal Kombat was also based on him. Besides all the supernatural strength and flames and flaming bike, I've always understood it that his power was his control of chains. I think he can do the "Come here" thing from MK, but not sure. Now, before a know-it-all jumps on me, I said I don't read them and that's from casual knowledge. So If I'm wrong correct me. Now all we need is more that PG-13 violence and we could actually have a hit.

I liked the DD movie ok but hated the ending ("you won't tell anyone who I am because it would ruin your rep to have been beaten by a blind man" - maybe, but he could have everyone you ever cared about killed to get back at you). Anyway, forget the first film, cast Keifer as Matt Murdock, and do a movie version of "Born Again". Keifer has that great voice which would make the voiceover/narration work. Same can not be said for Affleck's voice.

for 3 reasons, 1. Cage, probably the most overrated actor in Hollywood. The guy can't do serious roles because his face looks too duh, David Scwimmerish. 2. Ghost Rider is a B-grade Marvel character. I never read the comics and I have been collecting for years and never once had a hankering to buy a Ghost Rider, except when they did a crossover from X-Men. I think many people feel the same way. 3. The film is being delayed till 2007. Most likely because the script is horrid and they need to reshoot in order to make the story coherent enough to not be straight to DVD.

The set design was terrific, but talk about a lack of skill in shooting action! Jesus, that movie blows. You lost all credibility on that one. Guys likes Johnson and Ratner are getting the job because, whether you liked DD or not (I did) it made a hell of a lot of $$. And the Rush Hour films are good mindless entertainment that have grossed like half a billion dollars worldwide. And no, that doesn't mean they're great but it does mean that a LOT of people liked them. The last time a "great" director made a comic movie we got the fun-free Hulk movie. I'm sure a lot of big directors would do these movies but they just don't get it.

"Will no one save us from these lame comic-book adaptations?" was simple genius because that's exactly where this is all heading. A few years ago (ok maybe fifteen years ago) we'd have all shit ourselves dreaming about just the idea that we could get this many comic book movies made in our time on this earth. Now of course we've seen first hand what can happen and the studios have seen the paydays involved when they make a movie out of a comic book hero. They won't stop until there's nobody left to put in a movie. I'm thinking about the time we get the Mr Terrific movie (complete with his "Fair Play" jacket) we're going to see a mass geek suicide.

    by ribbons

First of all, the Director's Cut significantly improves 'Daredevil.' It's still sort of mediocre, but it's much better, for whatever that's worth. Second of all, I don't think he really had the power to "pull for his own film." On the commentary track for the DC, he even shares this anecdote where he kept trying to sneak this one, innocuous shot of some crime boss rolling up the window of his car in the film because he didn't see the practical purpose of cutting it out. And every time he left it in, the producers would go "It's still in there!" Funny, but kind of sad, and it's why Fox's comic book movies tend to suck. The fact that the first two X-Flicks turned out to be any good is a minor miracle. I don't know what that says for 'Ghost Rider;' obviously it's at Sony, but 'Daredevil' wasn't all that hot anyway, even with the added footage. Fingers crossed, I guess. MSJ seems like a nice guy, so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but Sony dumping this flick in the doldrums of winter doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Ghost Rider is a much cooler character than anything else out th

That will go along way in the success of the film. Remember how lame the Hulk looked when he was revealed? The Thing? Even the new Superman, sorry, is just a reject from the O.C. Ghost Rider, on the other hand, looks absolutely amazing.

it's about time hollywood made a movie for forty year old me

    by samsquanch

honestly, it just kind of baffles me that this movie is being made at all. I didn't believe it was anything more than an elaborate hoax till I saw that ten second trailer. I remember reading Ghost Rider when I was a kid, but it always struck me as the one marvel book trying to corner the elusive hash-dealing skid market- kind of dumb and flashy, fun for a few laughs. That said, It makes me happy that hollywood is at least that unpredictable. I stand before you... a little surprised._____oh and btw- feb. '07 is basically a year from now. stop complaining.

For all of you who don't like Cage, who would you rather see in the role. Cage plays emotionally disturbed loner better then anybody. He can be over the top sometimes, but he seems to have out-grown that. And for the CGI hater, how the hell else do you think they can do a talking, flaming skull?! CGI, when done right, can convey emotion. For all of The Hulk's shortcommings, the CG Hulk did convey emotion. Yeah DD sucked, and Electra was worse, but don't use them as the rule. Blade kicked ass (well, 1 and 2 did), Sin City was awsome, V looks like it's gonna be great. Stop damning comic book movies cause a few suck.
