The Golden Globes Nominations Are Out!

Published at:  Dec 13, 2005 12:43:22 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with the Golden Globes nominations which came out today. Frankly, these awards are some of the most annoying that get given out each year - The results sometimes echo what will happen at the Oscars. My favorite nomination on here is Terrence Howard for HUSTLE & FLOW. I really hate that Cronenberg isn't nominated for Best Director or that Viggo didn't get the nom for his role in that film. It was just called Blackpool when it was on in the UK, and it's kind of about how Blackpool is slowly trying to become the British Vegas (hence the added 'Viva' title). It's great, it's serious drama then it just breaks into a song and dance number. Great performances all round.

Also, I'm glad the Squid and the Whale got noticed. Great. Also, Will Ferrell? I haven't seen Match Point, but I'm definitely looking forward to that. What's the Deal With Gay Movies/Characters?

    by angel_svn

Why are there so many? For less than 3 percent of the population, Hollywood makes it seem that 1/3 of all people on earth are gay. (That's really bad math: 33.3 percent vs. 3 percent?) Anyway, I saw Brokeback Mountain and think it is pretty good. I wasn't angered, shocked, or aroused when they started their sex fest ... because get over it, gay people commit such acts from time to time.

But it's getting awards not because it breaks down barriers or is really a great romance ... it's about a bunch of asses who lie to their wives and whine about injustice because they are too cowardly to take a stand when it matters most. And we're supposed to think they're great gay role models. B.S. ... and rewarding this movie for that kind of crap makes it apparent that this gay agenda conspiracy theory has wheels.

By the way, the characters aren't really gay, but bi-sexual, because in the true since of the word, homosexuals can't and won't engage in sex with people of the opposite sex. (That's why only about 2% if not less are really gay! Do we really need to make a big fuss over gay movies with such a small percentage of the population? Really. C'mon! It'd be like having someone with hemophilia as a minor character in every movie and tv show!)

    by judas booth

I thought that the 4th season of '24' was excellent. And they disregard this show in favor of 'Prison Break' and 'Commander in Chief'? Granted, PB is/was fun, but it's not in the same league as '24'. And I personally don't care for CiC. And where the hell is 'Deadwood', for that matter. At least 'Rome' is in there. Still, these are only for the Golden Globes, so who really gives a shit?

I agree with the complaints over the Desperate Housewives overkill. What about Jaime Pressly's Joy on My Name is Earl? She's hilarious and what a great character study! Echo the 'where's the love' for Veronica Mars. Can't imagine why it hasn't been recognized. Angel_svn, for the most part I'm going to ignore the utter stupidity of your comments (your definition of homosexuality is so laughably inaccurate that it's not funny - and yes, we're being attacked by the gay conspiracy! Watch out!) - I'm just hoping Mattchew's around to take a shot at you.

I hope everyone realizes that this show is the Melrose Place of its time. In three or four years, everyone will make fun of it, and you won't be able to find anyone who admits to having been a fan of the show. DH = Crap. It will lose the support of the "urban fabulous" soon enough and without the cachet of metrosexual trendiness it's just another shitty show, and not an "event" - and the show will survive after that for about a day.

  • Movies can be the best picture but not the best directed. Ever thought about a screenplay? I take you back to 1998. "Shakespeare in Love" was a better picture than "Saving Private Ryan," but "Ryan" is a much bigger, more important project. Problem is, the script is pretty stale in retrospect. But hey, those weren't my favorites those year. Those would be "Elizabeth" and "Thin Red Line."

Besides, don't you think "Aviator" was better directed than "Million Dollar Baby"?

    by halloween68

What a rip!!! Two of the best films of the year right there. Now mind you I haven't seen KONG yet, but... At the moment I can't think of a 2005 film I enjoyed more. And I've seen a lot of the current noms. Most are independent films that really can't compete in the same way the big blockbuster's can. However, those films measure up with what they don't have with performances from mostly stellar casts. That said, performances included, BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY were made by very passionate film makers. And that shows through. These films represent some of the best of the year, and they should be up there in votes. All this year-end bullshit needs to stop. I think it likely they're getting snubbed because voters have ADD.

I can come out of Episode III and say "that shit was dope." Not a personal attack on George Lucas, not an attack on Star Wars geeks. Don't take things out of context. If I wasn't clear enough, my bad. Oh, and since you had to point out the word "think" to me, and yes I did see it, you did not use it in your post stating as a fact that Shakespeare in Love was a better film than SPR. "Why are there so many? For less than 3 percent of the population, Hollywood makes it seem that 1/3 of all people on earth are gay. (That's really bad math: 33.3 percent vs. 3 percent?)" How are you determining that? There's like, what, 3 gay movies this year? Out of like, what, 200+? That's less than 3 percent from what I can tell. And in those movies, the gay characters are definitely portrayed as the minority of society, so to say that these few gay movies from Hollywood are making it seem like 1/3 of the population is gay is not only ridiculous but extremely paranoid. Hollywood also made a "fuss" over the Holocaust during the year of Shindler's List and how many people were directly affected by that? Far less than 3 percent I'm sure (Yes, Jews only make up about 2 percent of the population). "By the way, the characters aren't really gay, but bi-sexual, because in the true since of the word, homosexuals can't and won't engage in sex with people of the opposite sex." Hmmm this is a naive way of thinking about it. I know plenty of homosexuals who have had sex with the opposite sex when they were younger because they were confused or could not accept that they were gay. In a society where you're taught that homosexuality is not normal, it's not surprising that a lot of gay people try to deny their feelings and try be straight (including having sex with the opposite sex) in order to be "normal". And in a movie like Brokeback, which takes place in the 60's and in Wyoming, it makes perfect sense that these guys would marry women and have children because being gay simply wasn't an option.

    by vinceklortho

Let's see the movie first and then come back and debunk it. Most people who are bashing it, like Armond White, have crackpot theories that his colleagues(critics) are only praising this year's movies because of their political agendas. So, he must write an article about how mostly every movie that came out this year is some conspiracy to act "smug" and more "smart" than it really is. These things have nothing to do with the movie itself and the craftsmanship that went into making it. Garbageman is acting reasonbable if you ask me. Who has seen this movie yet? Brokeback isn't "groundbreaking" like some call or a "gay" call of arms. It's just a very emotional, heartwretching movie that is made very well. If you have seen it and don't like it because of reasonable opinions, then so be it. I respect that.

"Sorry, but if "Brokeback Mountain" was about a cowboy and his girlfriend, it wouldn't be nominated for any awards." LOL this is funny too. If "Brokeback Mountain" was about a cowboy and his girlfiend, it would be a completely different movie so what exactly is your point? That's like saying if Shindler's List was about the murdering of an anthill in Africa instead of Jews, it wouldn't have been nominated. Umm yeah because it would be a completely *different* movie! Every best picture winner was about straight people in straight relationships, and yes maybe if you look hard enough there might even have been one about a cowboy and his girlfriend. So again, what is your point?
