SIMPSONS 7!! GILMORE 5!! Herc's Super-Exciting Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Dec 13, 2005 12:28:35 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Though “The Simpsons” is currently in what I regard as its eighth substandard season in a row, I still revere this series as one of the four finest sitcoms ever produced, alongside “Cheers,” “Fawlty Towers” and “The Larry Sanders Show.”

In my view, “The Simpsons” didn’t start to go off the tracks at all until the start of season 10.

Season seven is a treasure trove of comedy genius: Milhouse is cast as Fallout Boy, Ned adopts Bart and Lisa as foster children, Bart sells his soul for five dollars, newly minted vegetarian Lisa is enraged by a propaganda film from The Meat Council, Homer decides to gain 61 pounds so he can claim his obesity as a disability, Homer discovers his fugitive mother is still alive, Sideshow Bob escapes prison and demands an end to all television, Bart gets banned from a store for stealing, Monty Burns replaces Otto on a winning bowling team, Bart menaces new neighbor George H.W. Bush, Marge’s new outfit lands her an invitation to a country club, Krusty’s tax problems force him to fake his own death, Lisa learns disturbing facts about Springfield’s founder, Burns fires Smithers, Bart befriends the true creator of Itchy and Scratchy, actor Troy McClure dates Selma, Bart rents a car and drives to Knoxville with Milhouse and Nelson, a greedy Burns hires someone to kill fellow former vet Abe Simpson, Apu must pass a citizenship test to avoid deportation, Homer meets Cypress Hill and the Smashing Pumpkins and becomes a rock-tour novelty act, and Lisa hides her dorky nature from her new beach-vacation friends.

The first episode resolves the “Who Shot Mr. Burns” cliffhanger from season six. The season also includes “22 Short Films About Springfield” and the 3D “Little Girl Lost” parody in “Treehouse of Horror VI.”

Extras include commentaries on every episode, loads of deleted scenes, dubbing in four extra languages (German, Japanese, Italian and Portuguese) on one episode.

At the moment, it's only href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=aintitcoolcoa-20&creative=9325&path=tg/detail/-/B000BQPC42/qid=1129436155/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14?v=glance%26s=dvd">$32.48, which means it's actually cheaper than seasons two through five.

As the illustrations above suggest, you get your choice of two covers: href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=aintitcoolcoa-20&creative=9325&path=tg/detail/-/B000BQPC42/qid=1129436155/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14?v=glance%26s=dvd">The Simpsons: The Complete Seventh Season (Conventional Edition) and The Simpsons: The Complete Seventh Season (Marge-Head Edition). Choose wisely.

The other big deal streeting this week is Gilmore Girls: The Complete Fifth Season. We’re currently in the show’s sixth season, so I trust an elaborate recap isn’t necessary. It starts right after Luke and Lorelai snog for the first time, and right after Rory loses her virginity to married ex-boyfriend Dean. It ends with Rory quitting Yale following a bad performance review and moving in with her grandparents - and with Lorelai proposing to Luke. In between, Emily & Richard reconcile, Lane falls for Zack, Rory falls for Logan, Lorelai has a (temporary) falling-out with Luke, and there’s a Tarantino-themed party to attend.

And if I'm not mistaken? This may be the first "Gilmore" set that actually includes a commentary track from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is every bit as funny as her characters. It's on the episode in which Rory jumps from a great height.

One of the best seasons of one of the best things ever to emanate from a cathode-ray tube. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me do a combined laughy-cry thing.

    by theseeker7

Holy cow Herc did I just lose some respect for you on that one. Granted, I don't get a SINGLE BIT of old school Brit humor, so the likes of FT, Mr Bean and Ab-Fab has never made me even crack a smile once from all that I've seen (& I say "old school" to cover my ass because I feel Ricky Gervais's work is genius, though I don't know of the UK itself, or the rest of the world for that matter, would necessarily call that "Brit humor") and though I personally don't like any of it, I can respect where others would I suppose. But still, top 4?? Hell in my mind "MASH" is #2 ever behind only "Cheers" (& for the record "Larry Sanders" and "Seinfeld" duking it out in a tie for 3rd). C'mon, I gotta have another guy of my generation back me up on this, MASH is so deservingly in that top 4. geeesh.

Tour of Duty ran for 3 seasons (58 episodes)

    by big jim

Considering you see single-season special packaging for series with half the number of episodes, I think Tour of Duty is allowed to get away with it for the entire run. Plus it is relatively affordable. It comes to $28.45/season, or $1.47/episode. Plus you get the footlocker. Better than the Combat series (5 seasons, 152 episodes for $240). That's $48/season, or $1.58/episode. The there is Star Trek season 1 with itsfancy packaging. $104 for 29 episodes ($3.58/episode). Of course we all know the Star Trek DVDs are criminally overpriced.

Herc, you're dead-on with the laugey-cryey remark. This show must be what they had in mind when they coined the term "dramedy". Palladino writes scenes that leave you hanging between laughter and tears like nobody else in the business. Lorelai's "I'm a bad mother" breakdown this season was the most absurdly moving scene on TV this year. As for those who say introducing a dog automatically means a show has jumped the shark, I say watch this show and try to tell me Paul Anka doesn't fit right in with other crazy inhabitants of Star's Hollow.

    by omarthesnake

Which isn't difficult when (A) the brilliance of John Cleese is on display, (B), the characters are so phenomenal, and (C) they only have 12 episodes so they could make them all terrific, as opposed to the many mediocre cheers episodes scattered throughout that show's 500-episode run. (my favorite being "Simon Says," of course).

    by covenant

So far, this season has been wretched. Were it not for Family Guy and (most) episodes of American Dad, I would have given up Sunday nights already. I can't think of a specific point at which the show "jumped the shark," but it's definitely in decline. A change of writers would DEFINITELY help, and a recommitment to the roots of the show--a la South Park--would make the show funny again. But, even with its obvious flaws, the show still has some great moments.

The Homer head came with an insert that gave step by step directions on how to order the box. Did this somehow escape all the people who own the Homer head? When the set first came out there was a flurry of news stories on sites like this one about ordering the regular box. I'm perplexed by all the wustions. It was pretty subtle and quick, but the recent episode "The Italian Bob" featured a scene where Peter Griffin appears in an Italian book about notorious villains with the description "Plagiarissimo" (or something like that) and the next page has Stan Smith with the description "Plagiarissimo de Plagiarissimo." SIMPSONS is obviously showing its age, but sweet little touches like that are helping it age a bit more gracefully.
