Alita=still a CG character?

    by Rindain

I assume the actress they find for Alita will play the same role as Andy Serkis in LOTR/Kong or Ahmed Best in the Star Wars prequels--i.e. her motions/performance will be captured and used to help animate the final CG character (it has been reported Cameron will be using an updated version of Robert Zemeckis' "performance capture" technology). They'll probably choose someone who looks like Alita to make the facial animation easier, but they'll definitely need someone strong, lithe and acrobatic. Anyway, I can't wait to see what Cameron's version of Alita looks like--I know that he's done extensive design work and FX tests for this film, so I'm sure the Alita model is up and running on a computer somewhere. Hopefully we'll find out more soon.

Using when a casting call goes out for 'any ethnicity' agents won't send any caucasians. That's why they say 'including caucasians' - the problem is when you do that, agents send you 95% white chicks.

Hey, I'm as thrilled as the next geek that Cameron is getting back in the game (and considering all the effects you know he's going to use, it may as well be a video game) but c'mon. 16 is the lower range? He's not looking for acting talent here...just seems like he's looking for tail.

    Alita's age

    by Rindain

In the manga Alita starts with the mind/body of a 14 year-old, then, as the story progresses, changes both mentally and physically (because she's a cyborg, she can change bodies much like we change clothes). Here's a quote from Cameron: "What I like about it is that when we first meet 'Alita' she's very young, she's sort of almost pre-pubescent in a way...she actually matures throughout the story. I like that the development of her mind actually affects her physicality. The character will be very, very true to Alita as she is in the manga."

  • Dec. 3, 2005, 12:46 a.m. CST

Give the guy some credit. Yeah, he's on his fifth wife, but (A) He lives in Hollywood - those guys go through wives like other guys go through cans of shaving cream. (B) He still has good, equally amicable relationships with his ex-wives (he still works with Bigelow and Hurd; even Linda refused to do another Terminator project without him.) And (C) he's been married to Suzy Amis for eight years now. By industry standards, (not to mention the fact he's almost a billionaire at this point and could play the field like nobody could,) it deserves at least a little slack.

I'm glad we're finally getting some movement on BATTLE ANGEL. I loved the original Manga series and I'm definitely a fan of Cameron's work (ALIENS is almost 20 years old with outdated effects and it still kicks the living shit out of it's action/horror brethren, including the more recent releases like DOOM and AVP). I heard that Cameron is aiming for a PG-13 rating but I hope he still manages to keep the same dark tone of the books. This could turn out to be one hell of a movie.

Real News - Judge: Game over for Illinois ban

    by sevadro

Judge: Game over for Illinois ban Court rules state's reasoning for video game ban insufficient Friday, December 2, 2005; Posted: 10:51 SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (AP) -- A federal judge ruled Friday that Illinois' restrictions on the sale of violent and sexually explicit video games to minors are unconstitutional and barred the state from enforcing the law. State officials "have come nowhere near" demonstrating that the law passes constitutional muster, said U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kennelly. Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich and other supporters of the measure argued that children were being harmed by exposure to games in which characters go on killing sprees or sexual escapades. Opponents declared the law a restriction on free speech and pointed out that similar laws had been struck down in other states. "It's unfortunate that the state of Illinois spent taxpayer money defending this statute. This is precisely what we told them would happen," said David Vite, president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, one of the groups that sued over the law. The governor's office did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Other states recently approved similar legislation after hidden sex scenes were discovered in a popular game, "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." California's version, set to go into effect January 1, is among those being challenged in court. The Illinois law, which also was to go into effect January 1, would have barred stores from selling or renting extremely violent or sexual games to minors, and allowed $1,000 fines for violators. Kennelly said the law would interfere with the First Amendment and there wasn't a compelling enough reason, such as preventing imminent violence, to allow that. "In this country, the state lacks the authority to ban protected speech on the ground that it affects the listener's or observer's thoughts and attitudes," the judge wrote. Isn't Alita's real name 'Yoko'?

    by Johnno

I should say that would indicate that she is Asian. A girl of mixed asian caucasian etnicity should do fine. But if Alita's mostly a motion capture CG Gollum (since her head was really the only part of her body that worked... well her brain if you wanna be a dick about it, then any person would do as long as they're athletic and can verbalize properly to motion cap her mouth which I guess is what the casting call is emphasizing. Anyway read through all of Alita recently as well up to the latest issue of Last Order... that manga's freakin nuts! So many great ideas, so many original charaacters, so fucked up and violent! I bet that Rollerball movie also ripped off Alita. WOuld CAmeron stick with the original manga's ending? I hear that was something the creator was forced to put together for some reason by the publishers and problems in his own life and is so continuing it as it should have been done. Anyway... I can't wait to see Den, and hopefully Last ORder will be finished by then so we can compare whcih is better and Cameron can do his Trilogy. Consider me sold for this movie!

    by Krazeyivan

Now hold on - Dark Angel especially season 1 was onto something - sure it misfired a few episodes and the series did not need the head script writer fired after season 1 (Thanks fox!) But it was an excellent show - It is far and away the best acting that jessica has done, she really showed potential in that role and was very good, and I doubt any of the haters actually saw an episode! Now I know everyone loves to pull apart her acting but her films so far have been mostly crap - even oscar winners cannot save shit films and look totally fuckin lost in them. She is a grade A++ hottie, whch could be why some of you are hating. BUT I do not think this film is the correct one for her. She has something similar in the pipeline with "Beautiful Killer" its too close a match.

Shit, his worst movie won 11 oscars and is the top grossing movie of all time. BTW The Abyss is still fucking awesome and Cameron's own personal favourite movie. Summer 2007 will be a great time to be alive...

and not Battle Angel. That title sounds as corny and generic as well..Dark Angel. Also I'd suggest Cameron could cast a young fresh faced Japanese cutie. But if he wants to go caucasian, someone above mentioned Racheal Leigh Cook. I think it would be a good fit, and get her out of Direct to Video hell. And finally she needs to remain petite and not tall. That's how she is in the comics and it's more impactful to see a tiny girl smashing the shit out of gigantic machines, instead of some Amazonian sized chick.

This casting call is for Project 880, not Battle Angel Alita

    by ch2praxis

People are so desperate for Jim Cameron to commit on Battle Angel that they are simply deaf and ignoring that this whole casting call is for "Untitled Project 880", as this is his real first project to go ahead. If you look at the Mali Finn Casting Call, it's address to the "attention" (ATTN) of "Untitled Project" and not "BA"....

This morning the Hollywood Reporter posted an article confirming the casting call is for Battle Angel, and that Project 880 will follow in 2009. Check it out here:

Hollywood Reporter received the notification this afternoon

    by ch2praxis

Apparently, they received notification this afternoon to fix the mistake. According to Lightstorm Ent., the next JC film is Untitled Project 880. Battle Angel's script is still being rewritten and far from being ready for February-April shoot. Sheigh Crabtree from The Hollywood Reporter has just received the news this afternoon. Reason is that AICN jumped the gun and assumed that the casting call was for Battle Angel without asking it properly to the right sources

    by ch2praxis

There are two major problems about it. The whole Cameron camp got sworn into secrecy and declining any comment for fear of leaks, while the whole diehard fanboy community only cares about talking Battle Angel since they have no idea what Project 880 is about. When the Mali Finn was calling for someone along the lines of Alita of B.A. (which is not, btw), then, someone from AICN started hyping as if it were the real Battle Angel happening this summer. Since Cameron is not saying anything, then the whole press jumped on the bandwagon as well. NOW, I've just received confirmation from the Cameron crew members that the next JC Film IS "Untitled Project 880", and NOT "BATTLE ANGEL", due to the size of the script which needs to the reshaped. Meanwhile, Project 880 will come first.

I still think JC's next is Alita...

    by Rindain

I'll believe you when Hollywood Reporter or Variety report that 880 will shoot first--but as of this moment, HR hasn't changed its story. Are you an insider or something? Why do you believe Hollywood North Report and not Hollywood Reporter and the many other interviews with Cameron in which he claims Battle Angel is his next project? I've been following this project since it was a glimmer in Cameron's eye, and you're right that following this project has been a rollercoaster ride, and many people are desparate to see it start filming. However, I need more proof before I believe that 880 will be Cameron's first.

  • Dec. 7, 2005, 8:45 p.m. CST

that said, I wouldn't be surprised if you're right...

    by Rindain

...why else isn't FOX confirming that they have greenlit Battle Angel? Anyway, whichever f(Alita or 880) ilms first, I'm happy to see a JC film happening at all. I wonder what 880 could be? Maybe Cameron has resurrected AVATAR? Or maybe it's his movie about the sun dying and the human race needing to leave the planet?

    Cameron's next project

    by ch2praxis

I have just been dearly requested by people working for Lightstorm Ent. to cease any information exchange on regards to Project 880 and Battle Angel. Unfortunately, that's all I can say at this moment. However, I can guarantee that once things are set in motion, more will be said about it as you won't be regretted that he made a decision to do Project 880 first and Alita second. Actually, Project 880 is a very interesting and exciting one as well, therefore, all I can say is to wait for the reports coming soon, NOT from the Hollywood Reporter, NOT from Variety, but directly from 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment.

    about the budget

    by Rindain

Hopefully the Fox co-chairs (Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos) won't cut the budget for "Battle Angel" too much--it would be a shame to see Cameron's vision neutered because of a risk-averse studio. However, Cameron has been a good friend of Gianopulos for about 15 years, so that gives some hope that the Fox execs will approve whatever Cameron needs to bring his next movie to the screen. I'm eagerly anticipating the official announcement from Fox/Lightstorm--my bet is that if you are right and the entire world's media has been reporting incorrectly that "Battle Angel" is JC's next, they will issue a statement soon to clarify.
