Herc's Seen Willow & Cordelia Throw Down For Wednesday's Four-Star VERONICA MARS!!

Veronica Mars 2.9 FAQ

What’s it titled?
“My Mother, The Fiend.”

Who’s Responsible?
I don’t know.

What does TV Guide say?
“After taking a peek at her mom’s permanent record, Veronica tries to find out why her mother was once suspended from high school. She soon learns that a baby was left in a school bathroom on prom night in 1980 and she believes she knows who the infant grew up to be. Also, Weevil is ambushed by Logan; Trina Echolls returns to direct a school play and has a run-in with Kendall; and Beaver asks Kendall to work for him.”

Kendall Casablancas (“Buffy” alumna Charisma Carpenter) and Trina Echolls (“Buffy” alumna Alyson Hannigan) have a run-in? Is there torn clothing?
It’s much more of an encounter than a run-in, but really it’s a scene that exists mostly to make hardcore “Buffy” fans (like myself) pee their pants a little.

Are there any inside jokes referencing a shared Scooby past?
None that I noticed, happily. They mainly snipe. Trina mocks Kendall for dating her high-schooler bro while Kendall mocks Trina for the sad state of her showbiz career.

Hannigan has her own sitcom on CBS, which was not the case when she appeared on “Veronica” last season. Is her appearance incredibly brief?
Perversely, Hannigan gets substantially more screen time in this, her third “Mars” episode, than she did her first two times around.

Would you still give this episode four stars if someone else had the roles of Trina and Kendall?
I would.

Given how central Lianne Mars is to this week’s plot, does Corinne Bohrer put in an appearance?
No. Not even in flashbacks.

Duncan read a note at the end of the last episode. Do we learn what it says?
Not really. But we get what I’m guessing is a very strong hint.

Is Wallace back?
Were it not for the opening titles, you wouldn’t know he was even on this show anymore.

What else is TV Guide not telling us?
A teacher saddles Veronica and Duncan with a faux-infant – a “Baby Think It Over” - for which they must care throughout the episode (and perhaps beyond); Veronica’s cavalier abuse of this device is the source of much entertainment. Mac is helping the Beav with his new venture, the Phoenix Trust Company; don’t be surprised if those two couple up.

The big news?
We learn which real-life tiny three-named blonde movie star will be playing Veronica in “The Aaron Echolls Story.”

The bigger news?
There’s so much big news in this sweeps-closing installment, it makes my teeth hurt. Here’s what UPN sent along with the screener:

Please do not reveal who has been bound to the flag pole, any medical issues, the “prom baby’s” identity or parentage, the reveal of who played whom to get ahead in the end, or the episode’s final surprise ending.

What’s great?
The fact that 2.x is, rather improbably, evolving into something even better than the debut season. Veronica’s fake baby. Mary Mooney. The homage to “Wilder Things.” The homage to “Webster.” Yorick’s skull. The “Mean Girls” theme generally and “You’re lucky you’re made of plastic” in particular. The softer side of Trina. The Mac moves. The Logan/Weevil throwdowns. The Surreal Life reference. “Ooo, I was supposed to have a shot of tequila first!” “And I can’t use magic, right?” “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a lot of paperwork.” “Heard your lights were out!” “The play is my master and I am its whore!” “Rode hard? Meet put away wet.” “And that would be bad, right?” “At least you brought the baby up this time.” “Ashton Kutcher is hiding somewhere. Ashton, come out!” “It’s the least Big Pat could do for me after leaving all those pervy messages on my voicemail.” “Do we have a slam-dunk lawsuit against the processed-food industry?” The big, big ending, and the many other fine attributes I am forbidden to reveal.

What’s not so great?
No Corinne Bohrer. The fact that we’re not permitted to reveal who’s bound to the flag pole, even though we get to see it in the teaser!

How does it end, spoiler-boy?
Given the UPN prohibitions, I I can’t say much. But very close to the end, Veronica finds something unpleasant in her refrigerator.

    Where's Wallace?

    by nemesisdarkside

Yeah, I know he's with his father, but come on. Seeing him come second in the opening credits, every week and not being in the episodes is frustrating. When's he returning Rob Thomas? Oh yeah. Why are people dying for major plots to be spoiled in VM and Lost? You guys must be the same type who MUST open your presents on Christmas Eve. Enigma is what drives these narratives (obviously coupled with excellent character development). Also there are many other sites which provide spoilers, so go there and quit bitching to Herc. Also dont you realise that if Herc bites the hands that feed him, we can all kiss his early UPN/ABC reviews goodbye, never know what cool shows might premiere next season. Anyway, it'll be fun to see AH and CC square off. I've said to much. Peace. P.S. VM rules, but you already know this.

I wish I hadn't even read Herc's synopsis, this episode sounds like it's going to be great!

  • I remember reading that they were cutting the number of episodes that most of the actors were going to be in this season. Veronica, Keith, and Logan were the three that didn't have their number cut down, so I guess this large block of Wallace-lessness is related to that? I hope! I don't remember if Duncan's episodes were cut or not--adding to my suspicions that he's the regular who will supposedly leave after 12 episodes since he's been in every one so far and his story is starting to feel like a repeat of last year complete with guilt-ridden dreams about not protecting a (blonde) girl he cared about. And what the hell was up with that dream last week that made Veronica look like a bitch? Oddly enough she sounded more like Lily, which is disturbing on so many levels.

First off, next week's episode IS new (December 7). But then it is in repeats until Jan 17. This season has been so amazing, and last week's episode with the scenes with Logan were just incredible. I have heard that the twist at the end of this episode is so earth shattering, and I really can't even fathom what it could be. Also, apparently the Jan 17 episode has another huge twist. I cannot wait. This show is incredible.

If Logan had actually lost a hand, that would have been phenomenal. Also loved Dick wanting to fuck his stepmom now that he knows she is desperate and not above having sex with teenagers. Why is Kendall being 25 significant? And if that note Meg has says that she had sex with Aaron Echolls, or she somehow killed Lilly, this would be the best show ever.

    by DanielKurland

So does that mean Logan had sex with Veronica's sister? Who could be tied to the flagpole. It will probaly be Logan or Weevil, but seeing Veronica up there would aslo be neat. Hell, somehow seeing Lilly's corpse or Aaron Echolls tied up there would be interesting. Retreading on the murder case from last year I am not opposed to, I actually like how it establishes how little we know.

I agree completely, and based on that, I really hope she is the one up there now. It would be surprising, but I am not putting anything past this show, especially since this episode is supposed to be so shocking. The only thing is I have no idea why Veronica would be tied to it.

  • Nov. 29, 2005, 1:16 p.m. CST

Lot's of reasons. Remember she did piss off the Fitzpatricks

    by Mr. Profit

So they could do some severe embarassment to her. Especially since they know what school she attends. But I bet Weevil is on the pole. It's Weevil's thing to do that to people and after Logan almost getting his hand shot, Weev's is done. But also they could put V on the pole to make her think Weev did it and further incite the war. Either way, I'm pissed that VMars is probably the best show on TV and doesn't get the props it deserves. Glad there is a place that I can talk to other hardcore fans though.

  • Nov. 29, 2005, 1:26 p.m. CST

    Good points Profit

    by DanielKurland

I agree that Weevil is the most likely, but what's great about this show is that they often do what you don't expect. I really hope the show gets some Emmy recognition this year, either in writing, or acting for Bell or Dohring. It's deserved. Also, with the infrquency of threads devoted to VM here, I am looking for more people to discuss it with Profit, do you have MSN or AOL?

  • Nov. 29, 2005, 1:28 p.m. CST

    by DanielKurland

Why would who is tied up on the pole be such a secret if it would be the expected answer of Weevil. It seems inevitable, so why would the critics have to hold off on this, yet they are allowed to mention someone is on the pole. It's got to be something bigger.

    Speaking of the age thing..

    by dustinthewind

How old is Trina? That would be a great twist. Also, I've always had the theory that Weevil came to the bridge to stop Logan from jumping, because he found a note about Aaron in Lily's secret note pen that he stole from her house. But Logan kicked Weevil and knocked him out before he got the chance to do anything, and Weevil's boys weren't in the know about why they were actually going to the bridge, so they automatically assumed that they were there to kick his ass. The reason Weevil hasn't come out about his real reasons for going to the bridge that night is because Logan killed Felix, and I'd be a little pissed, too.

Rewatch the Season 1 finale- he practically admits it to Veronica in their scene together. As for his jailhouse speech to Logan- you gotta remember that the guy is a cheating, and worse yet child-beating, sociopath. Not to mention an actor. You can't trust a word coming out of his mouth. And dammit, we'd better get a crapload of Wallace in the second half of the season. Though the accompanying lack of Jackie has sure been nice.

    Plum, you're right...

    by DanielKurland

    by Prof. Pop-Cult

What was going on there with the phone call shared between the two of them? Are they in cohoots with one another to try to flush out who in the PCH gang might have framed Logan and is taking power away from Weevil? That's what it seemed like to me, at first. But now I'm not sure what was going on there. Or if it was supposed to be ambiguous for now.

  • Nov. 29, 2005, 8:02 p.m. CST

    Oh, and yes...

    by CatVutt

I have to agree with Herc on this one...if they continue this pace, and actually dovetail this mind-blowing number of plots and subplots into a cohesive whole by the season finale, this season is not only shaping up to be much stronger than the first, it could be the best season of any show in quite awhile.

  • Nov. 29, 2005, 10:12 p.m. CST

    Prof. Pop-Cult: The Phone Call

    by jocutus

As the Weevilites were unloading a seemingly unconscious Logan, he deftly picked the phone from the one guy's pocket. Once they left, Logan hit redial to see who was giving the orders - None other than Weevil Knievel. Busted!

  • Weevil being the one on the flagpole actually would be unexpected since he's the one who usually puts people up there. Would you see it coming if you didn't know somone is going to be on the pole and that UPN doesn't want us to know who? More importantly, if it is Weevil, it fits in with what we know so far and escalates what's going on with him and Logan. It'd also make me wonder if Weevil still has his gang's support. I mean how would Logan get to him if he knows Logan is after him? It's probably a fair bet that UPN didn't want Herc to post as much as he has. Letting us know that someone will be tapped to the flagpole and that they didn't want us to know who is almost as bad as just telling us who it was. Only this is more fun for Herc (and us). It doesn't pay to third guess this show. I assumed Aaron couldn't be the killer because that seemed too obvious. Everyone I know asked "oh, did HE kill Lily" when they found out he was an abusive dad. I even remember someone here guessing about his motive. It was entertaining regardless. That said, it'd be cool if it's Wallace (again).

  • Nov. 30, 2005, 10:17 a.m. CST

Not as good as last year.

    by God-Man

This season started off great with the bus crash mystery, but that has been mostly pushed to the side the last couple of episodes in favor of the trouble surrounding Meg and Logan, and as a result the show has suffered. Their subplots are not engaging or interesting in the least. I don't care about Meg, and Logan's just an asshole. The last really good episode was the last one with Wallace. Since then the show has been flat.

    by nalapou

Remember when Herc used to do this for every single episode of Buffy, Angel, 24, Alias and lesser shows like Gilmore Girls? You're so fricken lazy now Herc. Sometimes the Lost post from the previous week still shows on the main site when the next one is put up... that's ridiculous I miss 2002 and before...

When Herc reviewed every episode, things were wonderful. I really enjoyed the insight, and I knew when I was in store for a good episode. Example, he has given this one 4 stars, but when not knowing what he perceived of the other episodes, it means very little. I would say last week's was 4 stars, and hope this one is 5, but what would Herc have rated last week's?

    Budget Cuts

    by nemesisdarkside

From what I hear VM isnt marketed well, which sucks. People still dont know about the show. And UPN takes money away from the show? That sounds rediculous! Why is it that these networks never give shows time to grow. And why is VM on against Lost? Before the season started I was afraid I was gonna have to say goodbye to VM, but surprisingly it hasnt been cancelled, so Im happy for now. UPN should invest more money into this show, dont they sense the potential? Also, DanielK and Mr P, u guys bring up some good points. Nice to hear where I can find more VM fans, besides Neptunesite, so thanks. Also VM isnt in desperate need of women: Bell, Carpenter, Hannigan, actress who plays Meg, 09er skanks, err..Jackie? I guess some more hot guess stars wouldnt hurt. Shame bout the lack of Lilly flashbacks though, Amanda Seyfield was quite hot.

Nalapou, I defiantely agree. I used to love when Herc used to rate every episode of those shows, it gave a real insight into the episodes, and it made sure there was always a talkback week by week. I miss that. Not only is the show doing better than it did last year, it's doing better than it did last year AND it's up against Lost. Also, the network head went on record saying that tonight's episode is his favorite ever. With all of this evidence, I truly can't picture them cancelling the show, especially when they don't have that many flagship shows to begin with.

    Disappointing news on the ending...

    by DanielKurland

Kristin from E! just posted the following "Turns out, they didn't go with the ending that was quite so shocking ... It is still mildly surprising, but the version I saw while down on San Diego was insane. I'm assuming that's the one you'll see on after the episode airs. And don't forget to stop by tomorrow at noon PT/3 pm ET for my live interview show with Rob Thomas. You can call in with Qs. Show momma some love. Anyway, tonight's ep is still great, though personally, I think last week's was better. And when you see the ending, don't forget that it has to do with a bigger-picture change someone may or may not have been hinting about a few months back! (Certainly not me.)" I'm pretty disappointed by this, and I wonder what version Herc saw, hopefully what we're left with is still wonderful and nothing that monumental has been changed.

More on alternate ending, sorry for all the posts...SPOILERS

    by DanielKurland

UPN posted the following: UPN will present a shocking alternate ending to the Wed. Nov. 30 episode of its critically acclaimed drama VERONICA MARS, featuring star Kristen Bell, that will be seen exclusively on ( for one week, alongside the episode's original televised ending. Afterwards, fans will be able to vote online for which ending was their favorite, through 9:00 AM, ET on Dec. 7. The winning ending will be revealed on AOL and announced on UPN during the East Coast airing of the Dec. 7 episode of the series. A video recap, synopsis, and the original televised ending and the alternate ending of "My Mother, The Fiend" will be accessible through and AOL Television ( ) immediately following the East Coast telecast of VERONICA MARS, Wed., Nov. 30 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET) through Dec. 7. In the exclusive alternate ending on, a familiar character is murdered practically before Veronica's eyes. Does anyone get the impression from this that the winning ending will be considered the "real ending"? Otherwise, what is the point? And are they capable of having the show be accurate and accountable as if either of the episodes took place? I really hope the winning ending is what is considered the real one. What do you guys think?

    Alternative Endings?

    by nemesisdarkside

I dont like the sound of this. Im all for creators listening to fans but come on, this seems off. They should just chose an ending and stick with it. Otherwise the ending which people vote for might not be the one that is best for the overall story. However, Im still gonna check the ending. I dont have to be with AOL or sign up for anything, do I? Hope thats not the case. Also, I know there is a big gap between tonight's ep and the next one, but they must have filmed it already. If so, then how will they be able to incorporate a voted-in ending into the continuity? DanielKurland, you seem to have the knowledge, help me out please.

I don't know what to think of that. It certainly would've set the season off an yet another huge tangent, but...maybe it was ultimately decided to be too much? Again, if this show manages to pull off this slew of plotlines without it seeming like a cheat, it's a truly great season.

The preview for next weeks episode leaves open possibility for meg's death and the baby living or meg waking up. I like the alternate ending but they wont be able to solve all the mysteries by the end of the season. Plus veronicas life will suck worse than season one.

    Alt ending was soooo bad

That alternate ending would have been quite a letdown. Sure it would be crazy, but this ending opens up more dramatic possibilities. Having V accused of a crime she didn't commit would have been one time to many that they went to that well. I mean seriously that's Logan's whole arc this season.

    I really like this show.

And I would still like it even if there were so many pleasant sights to see. It's smartly written and well-acted. The 1st season finale was the best of any series last year and if they can manage to do even better with all the stuff going on this year, it's going to kick ass.

  • "real-life tiny three-named blonde movie star" What a tease and a let-down. With Charisma Carpenter and Alyson Hannigan on the show, it would have been only fitting that it was Sarah Michelle Gellar. But they've been raiding Buffy's closet a lot this year.

    Glad to see everyone agrees

Herc, you need to start reviewing everything again... or now that you're a big media star that gets credit in the New York Times you forget about all the little talkbackers that made you?

  • Okay I didn't watch the episode very closely because I Tivo it on the weekend, but I never saw this "what did you do" ending last night and I'd thought that was the whole point, 2 ending to be aired on TV. So is it an AOL exclusive? If so then fuck that, fuck AOL, and fuck whoever had the idea to do this. Also, I found the pregnant Meg thing very alarming in and of itself. And was Meg's dad the guy locking girls in the closet? I didn't think so, but in the "previously on VM" section I thought they looked the same. If they are then I'm REALLY getting lost this season and I don't know if that's my fault or the show's.

Meg's dad locked Meg's little sister in the closet for his own wicked form of 'punishment'. Also, on a completely different subject, my post above "How old is Trina? That would be a great twist." I TOTALLY CALLED IT. Hooray for me and my brilliance.

So glad they went with the original

the show has enough going on at the moment without a drawn out 'Veronica proving her innocence' storyline. Just one thing too many. Waaaaay too busy.

Ah, thank you. Okay, so I'm missing crucial details somehow. I don't remember them saying it was Meg's parents house they were going to, and without that connection I didn't remember that it was Meg's dad and the hostility he showed, which was understandable given the situation, didn't tip me off either. I think there were just too many red herrings and/or set ups going on in that episode too. What the hell was up with Steve Guttenburg's character and his family? What the heck was that bit with the kid who drew Veronica getting decapitated and what exactly was his dad propositioning Veronica to do? This season is really ruining poor Meg, she was the nice girl last year and this year she's like the tip of a Freakstorm iceburg. I must have some kind of brain damage for missing so many important points--I even saw that episode twice! Then there was the "uh, did Keith just find a rat? So what's the point of that?" moment. At least now I know it was indeed a rat, though I think ending an episode on such a confusing detail was not a good idea. I'm a regular watcher and I'll watch even if I don't get what's going on, but I just wonder how this stuff is making newcomers feel. I don't think last season was juggling this many balls. At least most everything felt connected last season, whereas I don't know what Meg's freak parents and babysitting clients have to do with the bus crash and Aaron Echolls or what either of those has to do with the Felix stabbing.

It's not just you. As good as it was, that particular episode as a little dense and potentially confusing. I'm still not clear how much of it was actually relevent, and how much was 'hey, look, EVERY family in Neptune is abusing their kids'. The kid with the drawing and his father's a good example...was that supposed to imply that Meg, as the former sitter, had fooled around with him? The Guttenberg thing, I can only assume, will come back around. But the former might just have been a screwy throw-in, I guess.

best line ever...something along lines of....

    by wixmmm

"jokes on her, she came over to borrow my videocamera... she does love her dramatic exits..." - logan.... as a generalization, the best tv shows tend to have witty dialouge that blatantly takes jabs at all the conventions of television... how many times have people entered a room with a character, has a 'random' dramatic encounter and stormed out in fury???? if i lived my life that way i'd never get anything done.... reminds me of A.D. (rip) when tobias says "if this were a lifetime original movie this would be our aft break." followed by the narration "but it wasn't." I get a real kick out of shit like that....when used correctly (not shamelessly--see OC, real shame what happened to that show by the way...)

    Just one minor gripe.

    by CatVutt

Forgot to mention this before...the "She was a F(R)IEND" thing was pretty lame. Was there anybody watching who DIDN'T know she was trying to sign 'friend'? Veronica's usually portrayed as a hell of a lot smarter than that, and it was out of character for her NOT to pick that up, given that she was looking for any excuse to believe that her mother was a good person in high school. Minor gripe, but it did bug me.

    Yeah, I didn't realize...

    by nalapou

If something's signed out letter by letter and you blink, there's your explanation. I really haven't found this stuff that confusing this year. There IS a lot going on but I think it is all connected in some way to the bus crash, well, everything except the Wallace stuff. For example, they are setting up several reasons that someone would have caused this bus to crash. The person that blew up the bus could've done it to kill a) Veronica herself (could've been Aaron Echolls hired Curly Moran, b) Meg (i.e. it could've been her parents, or anyone else that hated her), c) maybe someone wanted to kill Cervando (the PCHer that was on the bus that Weevil was friends with) and that is why the Fighting Fitzpatricks are in it d) The episode with the toy buses made you think maybe someone wanted to kill the A'hoy Maties kid that was on the bus e) im sure in a future episode we will see a reason that someone wanted to kill the teacher that was on the bus. All they are doing is opening as many possibility doors as they can for why that bus crashed before they start closing them. They did the same thing last year... in the third last episode we were sure that Lilly's killer was Logan, Weevil, Duncan or her parents... and then BOOM, Aaron Echolls... Hopefully we'll see another huge twist. I love this show.
