There Is No Herc Curse??

Published at:  Nov 29, 2005 12:35:19 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Hi! I caught a lot of shit when I picked “Firefly” and “Wonderfalls” as the best new shows of two and three seasons ago. Weak-minded talkbackers began to speak of “The Herc Curse”: any show I championed would die quickly and horribly. So let us have a peek at the “Herc Curse” record, shall we? My top picks as the best (not the most successful) of recent years:

2000: “Gilmore Girls”

2001: “24” and “Alias”

2002: “Firefly”

2003: “Wonderfalls”

2004: “Lost,” “Veronica Mars” and “House”

2005: “Commander In Chief,” “Criminal Minds” and “Bones”

Now turn to page 69 (snort) of the current Entertainment Weekly (the one with “Syriana” on the cover) and discover that the two top new shows of the season are “Commander In Chief” and “Criminal Minds.”

Ah ha ha ha.

What? What’s that? Fox’s (not-cancelled) “Bones” is only the 16th highest-rated new show? Well. Let’s just have a look at what “Bones” is beating, shall we? “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Supernatural,” “Hot Properties” and the cancelled likes of “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart,” “Night Stalker,” “Reunion,” and “Kitchen Confidential” all did worse.

In your face, talkbackers. Word to your mother.

I warned you not to defy me.

    by chorleyfm

Most of those shows are good picks. Criminal Minds is the best of the cop shows, but it is still not gonna get me watching it regularly, while Bones is alright, although it would be shit without Boreanaz. Hnestly though CIC is awful, I watched 3 and gave up,m and from what I understand it has become worse with, largely, bad acting, incredibly poor dialouge, weak plotting and stodgy direction. You should be ashamed for being happy that it is still on the air.

Herc your "top picks" aside from Lost and Wonderfalls are pathetic. There have been some great shows on since 2000. Off the top of my head: Arrested development, Gideons Crossing, The Shield, Kingpin, Battle Star Galactica, Dead Like Me, ATHF, Venture Brothers and pretty much everything on HBO (The Wire,Carnivale, Deadwood, Rome, Curb). Come on Herc, you cant tell me you haven't seen shows better than Commander in chief?! and Bones?!!

    Compromise

    by mistah_scrotie

Guys, I think we all can agree that some of the shows Herc likes, other people like and other ones, nobody likes. Thus, the entire point of this article was to prove that there is no actual curse. That despite the fact he recently went to Egypt and stole from the Mummy's tomb, some, not all, of the shows he likes are still on. Scientists at Harvard University and Harvard College has proven empirically that the cancellations were due to other, non-mummy factors.

    by jackdonkey

there are 2 types of "drama" tv shows, those that have a overall season long plot, shows like Gilmore Girls, Firefly, Veronica Mars, 24, Alias, Lost, Wonderfalls. And then there are shows that are one episode story arcs week after week, Bones, and I assume House, Commander, and Criminal Minds is the same way. So the curse is broken because your pics are broken.

    Arrested Development

    by danielkurland

What the fuck is going to happen to the remaining episodes? They have eight left, and in January, House takes its time slot. That leaves the 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th and maybe Jan 2. That is 4, maybe 5 episodes. It could even be as low as three if they don't air an episode on Boxing Day. Now, a reasonable assumption would be that they air back-to-back episodes each of these weeks, but Kitchen Confidential is still scheduled to be airing these days too. Is FOX not going to air the remaining episode? Because, I can udnerstand them cancelling the show if it does poorly, they've given it enoguh chances, but they say they like the show, in which case, they shouldn't treat it like shit now. These 8 remaining episodes better air, and they better have some considerable promotion for the last episode, even if that is in 3 weeks, so people know it is the last episode. It would be immensely frustrating to have to wait like 6 months to see these episodes on DVD and have them ineligible for Emmys, because I'm sure the finale and S.O.B will definitely be Emmy worthy. Any ideas or clarification for what is being done?

Last year was a gold mine of good shows. This season just seems to be a few mediocre shows that will probably die before their time. Bones, Invasion, Threshold. I haven't watched Commander and Chief simply because it doesn't look like anything interesting.

Bones is still pretty fun, have no interest in the other 2

    by oisin5199

After the Inside, Bones is the only 'procedural' show I have any interest in watching (in general, I'm bored by most shows with cops, doctors or lawyers). I'll admit that I initially tuned in (to both)for the Buffy connection, but I stuck around because the characters were interesting and I wanted to see them in action, and the dialogue was funny. I second the love for My Name Is Earl, the first 'sitcom' I've watched in years (not counting the AD dvds I'm catching up on). The characters are great, the writing is hilarious, and how can you fault a show that used Nick Drake's 'Time Has Told Me' over a scene with Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee sitting in a jail cell dressed as a priest and a nun. Every episode is like a great little indie comedy film. Prison Break definitely fills the 24-style implausible nail-biter. Lost and VMars (and BSG) still the best thing going right now.

    Oddly enough

    by napoleon park

I pretty much agreed with Hercules list. I tried Veronica Mars several times based on his recommendation and didn't care for it. Too Nancy Drew 90210 for my taste. But then I never understood his Desperate Housewives hate, either. There were a couple shows on his list I've never seen (24, Firefly) but all the rest are excellent. Bones has interesting characters, the cutest wisecracking sidekick on TV in Michaela Conlin (Irish and Chinese, how about that), they skipped the slow build-up and went straight to the unresolved sexual tension between the leads with no intention of resolving it, and the last episode ended on a great CGI SFX of the pair investigating a charred body on a scaffolding halfway up the side of the Washington Monument. Awesome. *** I'm as burnt out on law enforcement procedurals as the next guy, but as good as Numb3rs is, "Criminal Minds" may be the most dramatic and suspenseful of the crop, and again has a great cast of likable characters, especially the Dr. kid. *** And for the record Karen Sisco WAS the best show of the year it was on. And Wonderfalls the best collection of unaired goodies since Clerks: the Animated Series.

What does this prove? A show is good or it isn't. What does it matter if you're in-step with the preferences of the bulk of the American public and/or the network execs? Crap on television has always prospered and will continue to prosper. Good shows will always be cancelled and will continue to be cancelled.

Bones to move against Lost and VM in Jan.

    by oisin5199

First, it's Willow vs. Xander on the sitcoms (Willow won). Now it's Angel vs. Cordelia and Willow, with Bones moving to 9pm est, going up against Lost and Veronica Mars. What will my DVR do? The battle of the Post-Buffy allstars continues.
