Effie has been cast in Bill Condon's DREAMGIRLS!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an update on Bill Condon's next directorial outting, DREAMGIRLS, thanks to Playbill (Sorry, forgot... and special thanks to Franz Kafka for the heads up!). Jamie Foxx is already onboard, as is Eddie Murphy, Beyonce Knowles and Danny Glover. There was talk of Fantasia taking the lead role of Effie in the musical loosely based on the rise of Diana Ross and The Supremes. Well, the role has been cast and Fantasia ain't in it. It's a lady named Jennifer Hudson, another American Idol contestant who the filmmakers believe was "born" for the role. KINSEY was great and GODS & MONSTERS is still as great as it was the day it was released. Condon has my full confidence and this looks like an insanely interesting cast. What do you folks think?

Tons better than Fantasia. She's got the right attitude, and the right look. Hopefully she can act.
But the voice is perfect. -
I wonder if that's what prompted you to post this...I hope so! Franz Kafka was the name...
-
I like that they're going with semi-unknowns for a few of these roles, as I don't want to see the latest pop star playing such and such. The question is, how many AICN talkbackers aside from the ones that grew up listening to this type of stuff will give a rat's ass?
-
rat-ta-tat-tat mutha fucka....sorry, the feline laxative hasn't worn off yet.
-
Not that there's anything wrong with that. It just seems like his past movies always have strong gay elements in them. Kind of like most of Bryan Singers stuff. I can't see where this new one would.
-
I was at the "Kinsey" screening AICN put on in Sherman Oaks last year, and it came up. Also, no straight man could have come up with that wonderful adaptation of "Chicago."

Also, Jennifer Hudson was the best of American Idol season 3.

This is incredible news. Her voice will give you goosebumps. Very spiritual. Very gospel. Very Motown.

He really is gay. As in homosexual. That is all.

Thats too bad I was hoping Fantasia would be in it.
-
So what?
-
So, nothing. Pay attention to what's been said before you; it was merely mentioned in answer to a question someone asked.

I agree Quint, God & Monsters was fantastic, but c'mon guys, does anyone really care about this shit film? Jamie Foxx sux...whoops, I mean sucks. Hack, hack, hack, loser, loser, loser. I'm already sick of these Stupid music legend biopics about bands and artists nobody even cares anymore, and I haven't even seen one yet. Blah, blah, I struggled but over came everything because I had a good voice. Blah, blah. How long is it before Hollywood remakes La Bamba, and John Leguizamo wins an Oscar?
-
i wonder if this will be able to live up to the notoriously cinematic staging by michael bennett. i would like to see some bob fosse influence in this film since he was nowhere to be seen in that tragically botched Chicago. All That Jazz rules, by the way.
-
That was Rob Marshall ("Memoirs Of A Geisha" - who is also gay. Just had to get that...uh, straight. But by all means, let's all keep track of the gay directors.
-
Yet I've seen countless amounts of coverage on this turd. Something fishy?

A little hazy, I know. But the stage show, at least the revival, is crap, and the film is marvelous.

I don't watch Idol so am unfamiliar with Jennifer Hudson. I did have the pleasure of seeing Jennifer Holliday as Effie on Braodway back in the 80s so I'd say Ms. Hudson has some big shoes to fill!
-
It was successful enough when it was on B'way and helped launch Jennifer Holiday's career and all but the music is hopelessly dated and the book just ain't all that interesting. Of all the great musicals that they could transfer to the screen, why DREAMGIRLS? What's next? STARLIGHT EXPRESS: THE 3D IMAX EXPERIENCE!!!

I'm all for ZombieSolutions request...screw Dreamgirls we need more glossy, soft-porn trash ( but only if we can have the original cast back and Verhoeven directing from a script by Eszterhas after the two of them hang out in a hotel room in Vegas for three weeks doing cheap hookers and snorting even cheaper coke )...oh yeah and this time make it a musical because the suits in Hollywood will think that's what people want. Then call it something like Showgirls 2 Nomi Is 2 Do Me. Instant classic!

For heaven's sake, LOOK AT THE DAMN SOURCE MATERIAL BEFORE RANTING. Let's analyze your post, bit by bit:
1. A film that hasn't been made cannot, by definition, be shit.
2. I don't really care about Foxx myself, so let's leave that.
3. It's not a biopic, it's a show-biz story, and it's about a made-up group that's VERY LOOSELY based on The Supremes. Emphasis on "loosely."
4. Nice to know that you've polled everyone in the world so you can conclusively state that no one cares about Motown anymore.
5. You obviously don't know shit about the storyline, so shut up or admit you're just going by your instincts next time you post. Anyway, this has the potential to be a great movie- Michael Bennet's direction of the original production was very cinematic. I hope they transform the recitative into dialogue, though, because sung-through movies just aren't a good idea IMO. Now when is Sam Mendes going to get moving on SWEENEY TODD?
-
She is a freaking awesome singer though. Good for her. I'm sure she is going to KILL Beyonce vocally.
-
that's it! thats the title! poifect, Stewie!
-
Effie doesn't need to be thin- chubby to outright fat is the ideal, actually.
