MONSTER HOUSE trailer rules!

Published at:  Nov 12, 2005 7:41:47 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I love this MONSTER HOUSE trailer. To me, for some strange reason - it looks like a Richard Corben children's story. I think it's the way they stylized the people, they look like Corben people and I like that. This is the second big Performance Capture film that Zemeckis has produced. He's not directing this one, cuz he's busy on BEOWULF, but it seems that he's learned something fairly fantastic which is to not go for realistic looking people - but to stylize them more. The Corben look may not be by accident, I've heard that on BEOWULF that Zemeckis wants that film to be a living Frazetta painting - can't wait for the first look on that one. Of all the upcoming CG animated films I've seen a trailer for so far - MONSTER HOUSE is at the top of my list. Maybe, if only I remember my own neighborhood monster house. It was red brick, two story, Ivy crawling up its walls. Nobody ever went in and nobody ever came out... but lights came on. Shadows moved across windows, and nobody ever came to the doors... at least not while we looked, we were too busy running. I like this story premise. Here's the trailer - again offered not only in regular Quicktime, but in the glory that is HD! Bliss.

looks like shit. Less realistic does not mean more creative, at least in this case. Polar Express at least looked creepy, these characters just look dumb. The computer animation looks sub-par, and anything I've seen from "preformance capture" looks like shit. Why does Zemickes like, or at least use this? Oh yeah, because its probably fucking cheaper and he's already got the rights. I hope Beowulf doesn't look like this or the other turd, being that the promise of "a living Frazetta painting" gets me hard. And I mean in the penis, folks.

...why aren't they any kids in Spielberg movies that don't seem like they stepped out of the 1950s? Like that little barefoot boy with the fishing pole that the use in the Dreamworks logo... he's been extinct for a good 30 years at least...

There is no reason for this to be animated.

  • That house reminds me of the house that tried to eat Jake in Stephen Kings Dark Tower series. Seriously funny spin on it though. I can't wait to see how the kids defeat it... if they can.

The more movies that they can make that are like old Heavy Metal comics, the better. Someone should give Jodorowski $30 mil and let him loose on anything.

    This would have been great.....

    by emeraldboy

as non cgi horror film back in the 80's. Kids/teens/adults enter a darkened house and there is something sinister in the basement and the kids/teens/adults get picked off one by one. But its CGI, crap!

It would have also been great.....

    by woxel1

as a stop motion animation film. That technique lends itself more to whimsy and fantasy than the cold hard calculations of the motion capture process. Of course, this is my opinion, but I wasn't feeling the magic in the trailer. In fact, I'm almost positive this movie looked better on paper than it did in this trailer, the latter unfortunately leading me to brand this motion picture as a "shitfest." Which is something I wouldn't normally say - the power of Talkbacks compelled me.

Did anyone notice that the CGI in this film has NO motion blur?

    by starwarrior

It's actually pretty cool because it gives the CGI a stop-motion feel. It's something I've been waiting for a long time in an all-CGI film.

    Looks cool.

Or does the director's name at the end feel like it was added only after they realized they mentioned the producers and not him? I wonder if he got pissed. And the studio was too cheap to get that Voice bastard back to re-record it. I wonder if he had to drive all the way back across town to the recording studio to say "Directed by Gil Kenan." I know he's a first time director, but think how he must feel after hearing that tacked on the end like "No purchase necessary percentage off MSRP may cause sexual side-effects not licensed by the board of legal specialization void in all 50 states especially Ohio and Florida". Now the poor guy's wife has to explain to her cackling yenta friends that "if you listen real close you can hear Gil's name." Spielberg, you had a "Duel" once... Bob, you had that Beatles movie thing. You both did a good job. Break some off for Gil. He needs the love. Hell, you hired the guy, so yeast up already. At least when Pac-Man comes out, start the trailer with "From the Director who brought you 'Monster House'" comes a concept unfit for Uwe Boll... He's round. He's yellow. Ghosts want to kill him. He pops a lot of pills until he finds a "super-pill" that makes him eat the killer ghosts. He's...got his own movie why?". 'Nuff Said.

When I first heard Zemeckis is going to bring the classic Beowulf to the big screen, it sounded like a can't miss. Then I heard it was going to be completely CG, and now I'm thinking this could be a wasted opportunity. I hope I'm wrong, but it will be sad if everything turns out right in this film, but the fact that the human CG characters just stand out as obvious CG, whether too stiff, or too exaggerated in action, ends up bringing the level of the film down.

Just got back from watching Zarthura and they had a trailer for Monster House in the previews. I thought it looked pretty decent. Definitely a lil different concept. Oh, and I liked Zarthura to by the way. My main bitch about that was how the astronaut thing turned out. Other than that not bad though.

this is cool but i kinda wish it was more horrific and less cutesy. why must all animated films be for kids? can't they give these projects a little more edge? the cop car being sucked into the house is a step in the right direction, but i kept waiting for leatherface to mallot one of the kids or something... come on.

    Living in the 80s

    by jedibobster

This should indeed be live action shouldn't it? Ala The Goonies (this film even seems to have a Chunk rip-off/homage)Gremlins. Poltergeist etc. Using CGI animation is great and all, but I often get the feeling that they would be even better if done as live-action. This thing should be a proper scare-fest for children and adults alike. There are just not enough horror movies that cater for that audience. The Haunted Mansion need not apply, except for that one scene where zombies were chasing them from a crypt, which was reliant of the make-up work of Rick Baker and NOT CGI. Even, as good as The Incredibles is, wouldn't have truly been great (it IS pretty great I know) if it had been done just the same but in live-action? Fortunately Sky High filled a little of that gap for me.
The likes of Toy Story, A Bug's Life and Ice Age are obvious contenders for CGI animation, but Monster House here seems like it would have benefitted from real kids in peril rather than pretty pixel renderings. Kids naturally don't get as scared when they know it's animation. So come on Spielberg, next time you're in an exec meeting, why not pipe up and say "You know guys, this thing should be done with actors and physical/model Special effects."

Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab strike again!

    by seeitattheskyway

MONSTER HOUSE is the brainchild of the creators of HEATVISION AND JACK, the online TV network CHANNEL101.COM, and Schrab is behind Tenacious D's HELL O'CLOCK NEWS. These guys have been hanging on the fringes with the big boys (Black, Wilson, Stiller) for sometime. Those of us who remember them from Milwaukee when they were generating the comic, SCUD: THE DISPOSABLE ASSASSIN couldn't be happier to see their names in the credits with the likes of Zemeckis and Spielberg.

Keep a lookout - these guys will be around for a while.

No motion blur and Sky High

    by half vader

Just guessing here but maybe the lack of motion blur could have something to do with it being in 3d (like stereoscopic as opposed to 3d animation)? Then again, maybe they just forgot it, as it does have depth-of-field blur. As for Sky-High, I think that movie definitively showed why NOT to do The Incredibles in live-action. Or maybe it was just the atrocious and clich
