Rest In Peace Moustapha Akkad
Hey folks, Quint here. Before I went to bed last night I got early word that Moustapha Akkad had been injured in one of the three Jordanian terror bombings that Al Queda have taken responsibility for. Akkad had been "seriously injured" and his daughter had been killed. I awoke this morning to find a few emails (heads up from Omegasixx) in the inbox telling me that Akkad has died of these injuries plus a heart attack that he suffered after the explosion.
Akkad is best known for giving John Carpenter his bankroll for HALLOWEEN and has been the face of the series since then, having a big hand in all the sequels. Some of these have been pretty ridiculous, but as a money man, he always did find a way to keep the films theatrical pictures that kept making money.
He's lesser known as a director of the 1976 Oscar nominated epic on the religion of Islam THE MESSAGE starring Anthony Quinn. He shot two versions of this movie at the time, the English language one above and the Arabic version, AL RISALAH. They would stage the scene, have the English and Arabian actors on set, shoot the scene in one language, then bring in the other actors and shoot it on the same sets in the other language. Both films are very well respected.
In 1981, Akkad also directed LION OF THE DESERT with Quinn and Oliver Reed.
His death was brutally violent and I can't imagine losing not only one, but two family members in such a violent way. My thoughts are with and my heart goes out to his friends, family and fans.

i was best friends with a family member of his, met him a few times, went to a few premiers because of him, good man. may god bless the dead, RIP.
-
The Halloween series might well have gone to shit, but you have to give the guy major props for producing the original. I mean it's a benchmark Horror film.
It's pretty hideous when a life is lost through terrorism. I can't imagine what his family must be going through, especially with his daughter losing her life too.
As Quint said, thoughts go out. -
She died instantly in the attack and he never knew because he was in a coma. Its all so horribly senseless I can't even begin to understand it. I hope peace finds them both.

All credit to Akkad for getting Halloween out there.

I don't really know what you meant when you said that this was ironic... but first of all, "pro-Islamic" doesn't mean anything when you're talking about The Message. The film depicted the story of Muhammad and the origins of Islam as are commonly regarded.
And second of all, the fact that he was killed by terrorists is about as ironic as anyone being killed by terrorists (American, European, Asian, etc).
This is truly upsetting news. Thanks for the story, Quint. -
Akkad, a moderate Moslim, whose film THE MESSAGE highlighted Islam's real values of virtuosness, peace, forgiveness dying at the hands of those radical scumbags who are twisting the religion for their evil purposes, is sad and ironic. Our condolences to his family.

...if for no other reason, the man deserves the props for that. And yeah, that a man who made a movie like The Messenger, who, unlike the cowardly fucks who murdered him & his daughter, actually understood Islam would be killed like this = irony. Sick, putrid, senseless irony. Someone needs to put a stop to this bullshit.

Thanks for my favorite slasher franchise, now and always. -
Quality film, interesting in that the faithful do not allow The Prophet to be portrayed so much of the movie consists of actors looking directly at the camera. My (and probably a lot of other Westerners) only avenue into understanding the basics of the Prophet's story.

It's sad that these are just statistics to us, unless we know somebody, or even know of somebody involved. Prayers and thoughts are certainly with the Akkad's today - but also with all the others people killed in this horrible attack, and all the families of those affected. ALways noticed his name at the front of the Halloween films....
by doom ii
..but didn't know much about him. I considered renting Lion Of The Desert. Anyone seen it? It looks and sounds pretty epic. So are we winning the "War On Terror"? Seems Republicans all think so. Is it me or has terrorism tripled since the war in Iraq started? We would go years without hearing about terrorist attacks. Now it's daily. I'll tell you one thing. If the goal of these people is to convert the world to Islam, it will NEVER happen. I have Athiest, Catholic and Baptist friends who would rather go out with guns blazing than to "convert" to Islam. Do they not realize that America is made up of millions of non-Muslims? Oh yeah, one more thing, the Nazi's were the most organized, powerful and well equipped army the world had ever seen at the time. We stopped them cold. Terrorists are pussies who wouldn't last 5 second in a real "battle". That's why they hit and run like the little girls they are.
-
Maybe we should just nuke the planet and start over. What's happening to the world? Too many virgin adult males (heads filled with lies) filled with rage and hatred. Smoke a joint, get a nice blow job and you will put down the bombs for good.

That's the sad fact of suicide bombers. Unlike nukes, they are incredibly easy to produce.

Calling this 'Muslim Violence' is as non descript as calling Eric Robert Rudolph's work Christian Violence. I myself subscribe to neither religion, but calling Islamic fundamentalist violence 'muslim' without qualification blames far too many people, many of whome were killed in the attack.
Most muslims, in my experience, do not identify with the extermists even if they are critical of various policies by various countries. I think the enemy of our country, of all people, is fundamentalism, much of which festers here at home and has us in this strange position we are in today in Iraq. -
This is a sad day indeed. May yours and your daughter's soul rest in peace. Thank you for Halloween, The Message, Lion of The Desert and for being one of the few Arabic film makers in Hollywood. Your voice will be missed.

...as a fan of the better "Halloween" movies, I'm glad he is no longer in control of the series. Perhaps now we will see the Carpenter/Barker project "Halloween: Hellraiser."
-
It couldn't have been put any better. Mr Akkad was always known as "Mr Moneybags", and the lasting image of him for us will be the animated picture on the Criterion LaserDisc of Halloween, with thought-bubbles coming from his head as he has a brainwave about the plot of his new picture: The Babysitter Murders. He'll certainly be missed.
-
Very sad. May he rest in peace. And may peace fill our world and change the hearts of those who seek to hurt others. May we all gain understanding and love one another so that nonsense like this doesn't happen again.
-
Rise up against these dim-witted fucks and wipe them out. If they are so worried about these single-digit assholes carrying out violent acts in the name of Islam, then they need to do something about it.
RIP, Mr. Akkad. Thanks for the original "Halloween". -
I'm sure if it had been a bombing at an abortion clinic the reaction here would be less muted.
-
*sigh* why can't we all just get along? and this is clearly a man who cared deeply for the arab world and the issues shaping it. it's bitterly ironic that he would be killed this way. rest in peace, mr. akkad, and i'll keep praying that we find a way to end this bloodshed...

Yes, that is ironic. RIP dude. -
Nice - shit on the guy, then pretend to care he's been killed. STFU. Halloween has been copied by too many people to even bother mentioning ( much like Ridley Scott's Alien was ripped off endlessly - and NO, I am not comparing the two in any other way but the thieving angle) to have "sucked". Manaqua, you need any funds to get your school going, ring me up.
-
Motherfuckers. Cut that shit out. When is enough going to be enough for these zealots? When are they going to learn that killing, in any form, will NEVER let you reach the gates of heaven? Burn in hell. This makes me very upset.
-
By the way, respects and condolences to Akkad's family. His and the others hit by this bombing's deaths are senseless and should never have happened.
-
Why do we not have this problem with any other religions... except atheism?
-
Blowing up innocent people IS the way they see fit. In todays global culture they wont be finished until a worldwide Islamic theocracy is in place.
-
The regimes you list all engaged in some form of deification of a person, party or race. Religion isn't only what is taught in a temple or found in an ancient text. You can't argue with a god or a master race. Democracy, law and science have rendered religion obsolete. This wouldn't be a problem if the faithful would just keep killing the fathful instead of killing indiscriminately. But don't take my word for it, take a look at this study that compares the amount of social ills in a country with its level of religiosity. Go here http://tinyurl.com/buk75 for all the evidence you'll need.
-
I love when people say things like"I hate these fundamentalists, they should be wiped out". Do you not see that it is that sort of thinking that fuels them to carry out these acts.
-
your statement on horror films, fraternities and "Halloween" seems rather narrow-minded. some of us treasure the Michael Myers films for all the good, AND bad, they are. of any invented serial slasher, i think he's the greatest one, and i yearn for a day when he kicks Freddy's ass, since Jason couldn't seem to get the job done.
and i don't know what you mean by a "drunken fraternity novelty"...there are many brilliant horror films still being made. and there are many people who are interested in those, as well as the films of old. last i checked, i hadn't pledged a frat in college?
i guess what it comes down to, is you really outta try thinking 'out of the box'...the box being 'leows' or 'amc'. -
Totally missed the point, didn't you, boy? I'm not going to waste any more time trying to educate a putz like you...suffice to say this is a TB for people who upset over the loss of a guy that helped get Carpenter started, for one, & helped Halloween get made ( your idiot opinion of the film notwithstanding) - a film most TBers here seem to really disagree with you about. Whether or not the Halloween's that followed were kark or not aint the damned point. My point is - what kind of asshole shows up at a wake, in order to say in a loud voice that the deceased most noted contribution to a genre we all care about was shit? Oh, that would be you. Now piss off.
-
rip Mr Akkad. & rip to all the others
friends - this kind of terrible thing will never end so long as people's minds are filled with hatred. these perps are fools who should be pitied along with their victims. if we react to their hatred with more hatred, their foolishness will destroy the whole world. stand up to them by showing we'll never be beaten by hatred; show them they'll never drive a wedge between our cultures or make us hate our neighbours. show them what true Islam, true Christianity, true humanity is all about. don't be beaten into becoming like them: full of hatred. love these fools, 'cos they will surely burn for these horrible crimes. we can't beat them, or stop this shit, through hatred. like Gandhi said: "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Peace. -
Interesting in that it was measuring completely subjective data; what criteria could possibly define one country as "more" or "less" religous than another? Britain has a church attendance rate of less than 2 percent, but it also has no separation of Church and State and bishops sit in its upper house. The head of its official religion is chosen by its head of state. And its crime rate is roughly equal to the United States. Its murder rate is far lower, but that is probably more due to the fact that guns are illegal there.

He even went so far as to poll the audience there about Michael vs. Pinhead (the rumours at the time). When the crowd shouted "no" to this, he said, "Okay, maybe it's not such a good idea." The idea was scrapped. RIP to a great man and I pray for his family. I cannot imagine losing one person to this kind of violence, let alone two. I'm sure words cannot even describe what the living members of his family are going through.

Plant a couple of nuke in some of the oilbeds in the Middle East. When you set them off no one dies and all the oil is iradiated enough to be useless for more than 1000 years. No more money and they can all go back to being desert rats.
By the way Halloween ROCKS. I know people who work in movies and they love that film as much as me. -
Thanks for the article, Some Dude. That rocked. RaulMonkey recommends it: http://moses.creighton.edu/JRS/pdf/2005-11.pdf
And judderman: interesting points about the religiosity of Britain; the head of state in fact doesn't *choose* the head of it's official religion, the head of state IS also the head of the Church of England; Queen Elizabeth acts in both capacities. But your question, "what criteria could possibly define one country as 'more' or 'less' religous than another?" makes me unsure you read the article. The criteria they use are percentages of the following people in developed democracies: those who absolutely believe in God, attend religious services at least several times per month, pray at least several times per week, are agnostics & athiests, accept human evolution. Now, feel free to try and pick apart the validity of these criteria however you may. And for the record, the article specifically stated that it was not trying to definitively establish a link between religiosity and societal dysfunction, but rather wished to encourage further research. -
*Goes to Shoppers Drug Mart to pick up some KY*
-
Perhaps I shouldn't have used the phrase "head of state"- The Queen is of course, the nominal head of the British state, but for all intents and purposes the head of the British state is the Prime Minister, and he chooses the functional head of the Anglican faith, the Archbishop of Canterbury. As for the criteria listed, it is certainly possible to criticise them- all the "religious" criteria show is religious observance, not religious belief. And all acceptance of evolution proves is that one isn't a Biblical literalist. Lest we forget, it is actually possible to accept the evidence for evolution and still believe in God. Many self-described agnostics are in fact believers, just not in any particular faith, while many (I'd say most) self described atheists are in reality agnostics. As for measuring social dysfunction, that's a whole other kettle of fish.

Funny how french journalists on TV here in the UK are talking about seeing youths from many countries of origin, and religious backgrounds taking part in the rioting.
I know the Right wing media in the US and some other places are trying to make out the rioting is yet another bad thing those mean Muslims are doing, but we dont buy that here.
France is a deeply racist country!

I'm in total shock about this news! My heart-felt condolences go out to Mr. Akkad's family over, including his daughter, their tragic loss. Terrorists are cowards and those whom support them are also spineless and don't deserve to breathe the same air as normal, compassionate people.
-
I've always liked it because it's so respectful of Islam's key figures. As for those of you posting 'Islam is evil': *YAWN*. If you have the cajones, go to a mosque and engage in dialogue with Muslims. It's better than lazily sitting at your PC, googling 'Islam', clicking on a bunch of terrorist sites and then making a false assumption that you know all there is to know about the faith. My suggested alternative will a) allow you get some fresh air into those asthmatic lungs and b) introduce you to the concept of socialising. Note: see, I'm making a stereotype that you're close-minded geeks, and it doesn't feel at all fair, right? Voila.
Increasing people's understanding is what good chaps like Akkad strived to encourage, but I think some of you are missing the point. May God give him and his daughter peace, and the same to all those affected by these atrocities. -

"The Message" aka "Mohammed: Messenger of God" was not a very good movie, beset with problems in production and distribution. The chief problem is that any depiction of the prophet is considered a heinous sin within the faith. So the main character is talked to, and reacted to but never seen or heard. Upon unfounded rumors that the film would show Mohammed, Islamic extremists caused such a ruckus that Akkad hired respected Islamic clerics to act as advisors. They clashed often, causing Morocco to withdraw permission to film there. The production moved to Libya under the sponsorship of Muammar Qaddafi, which presented a whole new set of political and practical problems for the filmmakers. Finally, as the film was to debut, more Muslim extremists staged a siege against the Washington D.C. chapter of the B'nai B'rith under the mistaken belief that Anthony Quinn played Mohammed in the film, threatening to blow up the building and its inhabitants unless the film's opening was cancelled. The standoff was resolved without explosion or injuries, though the film's American box office prospects never recovered from the unfortunate controversy. ----- The film was never very good, but not so bad as to attract this extreme reaction. -- "Halloween" & "Lion of the Desert" are far greater legacies. ----- ... a terrible way to die, indeed.

From the 'making of' doc on the message DVD you dont get any sense of a prodection having any problems. How times have changed.

In most of the cases you specify, almost all, it's the muslims who are the oppressed, the ones who are trying to defend themselves. Though I guess if a muslim is opressed they should just sit back and take it otherwise they get labelled a terrorist huh? actually, they dont have to do jack to be labelled a terrorist anymore.
Dont forget who the biggest perpetrator of terror in this world is, who skews the media to make you think everything that happens is because of 'Muslims', who is waging an illegal war and occupation right now, who has killed UNTOLD civilians (but s'okay, they're only muslims and brown folk)...
who? (hint: they're not muslims) -
...and he was supported by a fervent anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali (ironic because she is a Somali immigrant herself) at the time. Though murder is absolutely abhorrent in all instances, it is utter bullshit to think he was a martyr for free speech. He was a propagator for racial hatred. Honestly, if you look a little closer at the facts, you would see this guy was a Nazi scumbag. A bit like Henry Ford: he invented the automobile, but he was an anti-Jewish sonofabitch. Van Gogh made films, but he was an anti-immigrant sonofabitch.
