Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN teaser trailer unleashed in HD Quicktime!!!!

Published at:  Nov 09, 2005 7:34:34 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I don't know about you, but Aronofsky's Psychedelic Fairy Tale couldn't get here fast enough if sent by Mercury's delivery service. I've been staying fairly spoiler free on this one, just because the respect I have for Darren's work and my own personal anticipation is so high, that I'm letting Moriarty take all the looks. I'm just glad the script didn't get sent to me first on this one, cuz... I would have read it, but I prefer not knowing. I'm gonna work with Warner's to try and get some special stuff for AICN on this, we'll see. This is one I think needs all the attention it can get. Now being debuted in HD and Quicktime - Here's

THE FOUNTAIN

    by filmicdrummer17

Definately not your typical trailer. Somehow the complete lack of audio for 80% of it totally drew me in...I knew next to nothing about this project (except that it used to star Brad Pitt), but now I'm intrigued if not excited.

I know we didn't see many effects...

    by darth yddet

... but what little effects were in this thing looked amazing. I don't know if it's just the HD transfer or what, but they looked so crisp and realistic. Can't wait for this one.

I knew I was anticipating this, but something about that trailer just shot that movie to the top of my most anticipated list. Requiem ws so brilliant but I have refused to watch it for years due to the sheer agony of it all. As a result, I had fogotten what a visual genius Aronofsky is. This is looking sweet.

    by spidermanfreak20

He and Cate were supposed to be in this like yesterday. But of course the project was canned when he went to do Troy. This teaser is the definition of art. This may not break in at the box office but like Donnie Darko propel Jackman from just being Wolverine.

    by masterwhedon

I'm sure they've revised it some, but it was pretty fookin' awesome. The whole thing is divided up like it is in the trailer, where the three parallel timelines run along and you see almost the same action, or a corresponding one, in each of the three timelines. It's simple in parts, quite beautiful in others. Be excited.

    by bebop_chick

well, that's an understatement. It looks mighty damn gorgeous in that evil, sneaky, underhanded teaser-ish sort of way. That wasn't my fear . . . the look was inevitably going to be stunning, inimitable, maybe even the stuff of nightmares beyond anything we could have imagined. Following this with such anticipation for so long, my fear has always been that, after all of this, does Aronofsky still have the balls to truly mind fuck us? With all of its potential for excellence, and the production hell it was forced to endure, this picture deserves nothing less than to take every viewer's mental processes and turn them into transitory mush. I miss having movies truly screw with our heads to the point that we come out . . . changed . . . in the way that his previous two films did oh-so-subtly. Please do not disappoint Mr. Aronofsky . . . we need this.

    Quicktime...Windows ME problem

    by wooksie

I'm pretty sure anyone having a problem with Quicktime the last few months is having it because Apple is no longer bothering with older operating systems.

Prepare to hear the same comments for a while in every topic that is raving about trailers.

I guess anyone still squeezing a little more life out of an older computer is out of the trailer game for a while.

I'm one of them and it pisses me off that they didn't make it ME compatable. I'm sure it wouldn't have been a lot of extra work, since Windows 2000 can use it.

Kind of sucked that she just blurted it out, then asked Darren Aronofsky if she was supposed to say that, to which he says brusquely "No!" What's interesting is that the spoiler can kind of be gleaned from the trailer, most notable for it's absence. Notice what's missing?

A little low to do the Kubrick plain text on plain background (I guess serifs are funny which is why Woody Allen uses them). I wonder if that comes from Aronofsky or Warners. 'Cause obviously Warners believes they've got the next Kubrick which is why they're treating him that way. I don't want to dump on this because it's the first thing I've seen for ages that looks like it has a challenging and audacious premise, but don't do a disservice to either Kubrick or Arronofsky by using a Kubrick staple like that.

The similar shots from era to era I really like, and Jackman seems to have some incredible range to explore here. I think Pitt ran when he realized this required a real actor. I'm going in opening day as cold as I can but I've made an exception for the teaser cus Warners, are letting Aronofsky cut and decide (most of the way) the marketing. Someone mentined Kubrick, well I don't know about that but Warners sure are treating him like that. You have at least one guaranteed viewer from the overseas market Mr Aronofsky.

I know, I know, Aronofsky gave them the "alliterative" shots to work with and everything, but you know that this was still a battle: there were probably at least two suits who didn't see how the shots went together, and there had to be a whole army of guys demanding more voiceover and that more of the story be shown.

    by entrailsoup

Hhhmmm.... Well, I just downloaded Quicktime 7. For some reason I can view the "small" and "medium" sizes, but the "Large" and "full-screen" sizes are herky-jerky and skip large chunks of frames. I didn't have a problem playing large and full-screen size trailers with the OLD Quicktime. That said, even with the small size the teaser looks fantastic, can't wait for the theatrical release.

    Jackman's depth

    by plum

Workshed, if you really think Jackman is just a pretty face you haven't seen him in the right context. He managed to single-handedly make the excerable "The Boy From Oz" into a very watchable show, dragging every ounce of complexity he could find out of the poor writing. He even managed to make "Oklahoma"'s Curly something other than unbearably corny (and you can get that performance on DVD). It's true that his movie choices in the U.S. have been less than inspired, but I think this film will change that pattern. He can do good work offstage as well as on.

well... like some have said - if aronofsky trusts 'im - then so be it - remember - DA put a wayans brother in requiem and i didn't shoot my tv once when watching... so i'm sure it'll be great... what's this - a young, talented director that can put amazing, thought provoking, mind-blowing visuals on screen - keep a sense of mystery to himself and his movies - and get good performances out of his actors... wow - and to think warners is treating him like the "new kubrick" like so many of you say... :) rock and roll...
    take care...
    wreak it well...

I'm not just here to flame. I'm being totally honest. It's an unreadable mess. Ambitious yes, but totally incoherent and silly. This film will be a compost heap, lumping together the worst elements of TIMELINE, EVENT HORIZON, and SOLARIS.

"about Rachel Weisz.I think it's that she's thick as two short planks but tries to talk in a deep voice so no-one will notice."....... well, you're entitled not to like her, but she's pretty damn intelligent. Not just because she went to Cambridge and founded a theatre group there in addition to her studies (I know some dumbasses whove been to Cambridge) but I read an interview with her where she seemed really sharp, down-to-earth...

    by mortsleam

This looks great. It's hard to hear about something that just screams awesome, only to watch it nearly fall apart when the lead actor has a ego fit and tries to take over the film then leaves it high and dry for one of the worst movies of last year. Jackman looks like a decent replacement, but it's a shame that he couldn't devote the time it takes to grow a ratty-ass beard, though. Hopefully Aronofsky can get it finished and not get sidetracked in perfecting the timing of every scene and end up getting obsessed and taking a drill to his temple or something. Makes me wonder how his "Batman: Year One" project would've turned out.

    Weisz' character in the future???

    by ashen shugar

Has anybody noticed that for every 3-piece of images it is always a "past, present, future" sequence but not for Weisz' character where it's "present, past, present". Unless that white cap and scarf are supposed to be futuristic...no
Either she is not in the future part, or her look is spoilerific....
take pleasure at using image by image of the last sequence with jackman coming from nowhere in lotus position surrounded by water circles....friggin beautiful.
This trailer is so exciting, much more than Kong (that music issue...) and definitely kubrick-y.

barfed up the juvenile "Requiem For A Dream"

    by montypigeon

You need to learn about film and the power of it before making a statement like that. If there is any film which shows the realism of addiction its Requiem. By your username I am guessing youre a Harry Potter fan and if thats not juvenile then I have no clue what is. Requiem should be shown to everyone who is thinking about taking hard drugs. That alone would put more people off drugs than any government advertising. One of the greatest cinematic works ever made and ignored by the ignorant.

    by sk909

I really thought Requiem was the exact opposite of what someone who'd had experience with drugs would do. If you want to see a real movie about what drug addicts are like in REAL situations, dig up Panic in Needle Park. Addicts sit around shitholes north of central park eating french fries, just waiting to score. I actually thought all the filmmaking was too cool for the subject. I'm not just flaming, I really like the filmmaking style, but something about it seemed like a director who was slumming over to the other side of the tracks for street cred. And I thought Jennifer Connelly, through the entire movie, looked way too hot. They really should have shitted her up a little more. But, I have to say, that dude that sold her into that sex party was almost too real and too creepy. Have you ever taken a ride at night through a rough area like Newark, NJ? Addicts look like Whitney Houston at her worse... x's 10.

    by montypigeon

Nothing wrong with not liking the film, I just found the juvenile tag put on by the person up there to be quite idiotic.** I have been around people in these situations and it was very realistic to me. About Connelly, I think she was to show that pure beauty can be dragged down into this hell especially when her crutch (Leto) was taken away. The same with Burstyn, it showed how someone innocent can be just pushed to one side by doctors and ignored which leads to her end result. I didnt like Needle Park, I thought the film dragged for me. I liked Aronofskys style during Requiem, for me it worked.

So much that I was dying to see this guys next film. Unfortunately I hated Requiem for a Dream so much that I even surprised myself. Although Ellen Burstyn was outstanding in it. There's something very 70's about this one here, but I'll still see it. However, Clint Mansell is the best thing about Aronofsky's films. Who would have thought the guy with stupid, stupid hair from Pop Will Eat Itself could produce such awesome film scores? Clint should just go ahead ad score Watchmen anyway - release it on CD and I'll buy the fucker. Incidentally, anyone who is having issues with the link - are you using Peer Guardian or a similar program? If you're a naughty filesharer and use this it will block access to a lot of sites, including this one.

Seen all 3 films and coming from someone who was addicted, the film for children would be Trainspotting by a huge margin. Its a comedy instead of showing the harsh reality of what addiction does to the mind, body and soul. Take a look again at "WINTER" and then tell me anything in Trainspotting even comes close to that. Best thing about Trainspotting was having Underworld on the soundtrack, that hip soundtrack for the kids.

That may have been the most effective teaser trailer I've seen in over 10 years. The last teaser trailer I can recall being that effective was for Jurassic Park (when you see the raptor's face breathing on the glass...sensational), GoldenEye's teaser was fuckin awesome as well. Short. Vivid. Majestic. Illuminating. Mysterious. All are encompassed in the trailer. Now granted, I don't know if the film's any good but that trailer is spectacular. Bunch of Haters! Kubrick-Aronofsky

    by scrivener

Kubrick was brilliant because his movies were simple yet deep, old fashioned yet challenging, amusing yet serious. He played on the balance of ironies. IMO, the way he made films should have been a gold standard, not an exception or a gimmick. The Fountain could very well be a return to the golden age of film-making. Cheers.

HP - I cannot take Trainspotting seriously

    by montypigeon

The thing is that there is an amount of addiction within Requiem its not only Heroin. We see Burstyn wishing for the fairytale which is to appear on TV which eventually leads her to the amphetamine from the Doctor. The point being the Doctor knows best which Burstyns character believed. She wished for a fairytale life due to the nightmare which her son is putting upon her all the time. Leto is the typical sleazeball you come across in the drug world, he will sell his soul for Heroin. One of the major parts of the film for me is when Leto finds out his mother is taking speed and preaches to her about it. The film ends where it should end in absolute travesty. The only person at that point you feel sorry for is the only person who you should feel sorry for which is Sara. The others were still the scum that started the film but in Burstyn you had the innocence that was trapped in this hell. The others deserved it because they knew what they were getting into in the first place. The music in Requiem I find goes hand in hand with whats happening in the film, its a work of art. I can never take Trainspotting seriously because I dont think it was meant to be. To me it puts the glamour into Heroin addiction which is the complete opposite of what Requiem does. If you put a class of students in a room and watched those three films you mentioned, then after Requiem most would be shocked. By the halfway point in Trainspotting they would be thinking "Is Heroin really a bad drug". Everyone in Trainspotting you meet on the town every weekend, how many people meet a character like Burstyns? They are out there in their numbers being given scripts consisting of every upper and downer known to man/woman. Behind closed doors, shut out to the world using their doctor approved safe drugs that cause more harm than good. And no, I am not typing with one arm but I just cannot take anything seriously in Trainspotting. Requiem is like watching a horror film, Trainspotting is like going to a holiday camp. Its as if it was written as one of those carry on films - "Carry on the Heroin". Give me Requiem anyday over it, it doesnt pull the punches.

I dont think Aronofsky has had alot of cg in his movies but upon veiwing that super classy trailer it looks like hes going to be one of those few directors capable of using the technology in a conservative (what a dirty word) and artistic manner.

That was very well said and I agree with you on every point you made except the fact that I liked Requiem. And the reasons are the same as HogChlorea's. So, to sum this all up...I made no original thoughts whatsoever as to why I like it, I was just lazy and saw that someone else had written it better and I am just copying them. But, I like your points about Trainspotting, another brillant drug movie. But, Requiem is another beast of a movie. Two different things i think.

i'll take brown bunny over requiem anyday

    by chief redcock

the reedited version has its moments... it's an exercise in minimalism that's worth watching and not as bad as critics would indicate. my main complaint would be that the ending (in the motel) is a touch too much like the ending of buffalo 66... also, gallo always has to have his female costars hero-worship him. please. talk about implausible. the fact that he's a republican also irks me, but... really, it's hard to deny that he has talent. i just watched buffalo 66 for the third time a few nights ago, and i gotta say, i think it's an unabashed masterpiece, a fine example of cassavettes-style filmmaking. excellent work. brown bunny isn't far off either... it's certainly a more genuine, heartfelt film. and it's less flashy and less phoney than the ballyhooed requiem... it almost feels like ozu mixed with monte hellman and jim jarmusch or something. it's a good film, and it wouldn't surprise me if it developed a serious cult audience a few years from now (if it hasn't already).

HP - Renton versus Harry Goldfarb

    by montypigeon

This is why I called Requiems 3 other characters scum. Renton is your average lad, the type you see in any town at any time. Is a user of Heroin and happy go larry type character. Then we get to Harry, way down the scale in addiction to the point of stealing from his own mother to get his fix. Requiems Heroin addicts = Scum. Trainspottings Heroin addicts = Fun. Thats why Burstyn is the innocent being caught up in the drug world while the other 3 deserved everything they got. Did they give up? No, they are still following their deluded dreams that they can survive with this addiction and make a normal life by not working (Only dealing). They have no life, they have dreams but no life. Trainspotting is completely different, it shows someone who is casually using Heroin and he gets clean. Do you think anyone from Requiem could get clean? They have gone too far down the spiral even Sara. They are at the point of no return, Renton was saved by his overdose. Requiems addicts are still reaching for the impossible dream. If you think I should feel sorry for a person who is stealing the only television his mother got for the numerous time to pay for his fix shouldn't be classed as Scum then who is? The only redeeming feature Harry Goldfarb has is when he tells his Mother about the pills she is taking. The Anti-drug film is Requiem out of the both, as I said before - Pulls No Punches. I have seen characters like Leto and they have no care for others, its the next fix and that fix is golddust until that wears off and its time for their next one. A vicious circle that never stops and with the 3 of them, they couldnt care about stopping. They would backstab one another to get what they want.

I see Trainspotting as a comedy and Requiem as a Horror film. You said Requiem was juvenile but I cannot understand how and still dont. Seen Trainspotting the day it was released and most of the audience wanted this cool hip flick and thats exactly what they got. Extremely different to the audience that watched Requiem, you would have thought they just witnessed The Exorcist for the first time.
