So, that BLACK CHRISTMAS remake has officially started moving...

Published at:  Nov 01, 2005 4:46:07 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love Bob Clark's BLACK CHRISTMAS, the true granddaddy of slasher films. I love HALLOWEEN, but this is the one that really started it all. You can credit PSYCHO, too, but BLACK CHRISTMAS really started the visual style and tentpoles of the genre, like the killer's POV and "pick off the college co-eds one by one" formula for example. The movie is very much a product of its time and I am really struggling against the idea of a remake. I don't like the idea of remaking this film at all. The story is cliche now, the characters work because of the actors in that moment in time. This sounds to me just a way for the money men to take a great title and set-up and make something that is otherwise totally unrelated to the original.

Dimension Films is distributing the movie in the US (another reason I'm thinking this remake is doomed) which will be handled by James Wong and Glen Morgan of X-Files the TV series (great), the WILLARD remake (really good), the original FINAL DESTINATION (fun) and Jet Li's THE ONE (retarded).

If you're a horror fan at all and haven't seen the original film, go seek it out. Put it high up on your Netflix cache, hit local video store or Best Buy and get it. It's a classic of the genre with a great, great ending. John Saxon is the man in the movie, Olivia Hussey is forkin' gorgeous and you can see young Margot Kidder before she went insane! Quality stuff all around. Let's just hope they don't fuck it up too bad with this remake.

    The Original

    by jerri blank

The original is wonderfully creepy and atmospheric. The sorority house is one of the best sets in slasher film history and is as important to the mood of the film as the Bates house in "Psycho". I'm not against remakes but I hope they can recreate the look and feel of the original. Because otherwise it will be, as Quint pointed out, just another attempt to squeeze cash out of a well-known title. Good luck.

Black Christmas is not too well known.

    by mr. profit

So thats why a remake would totally work. Only if done right or a bit different than the original. What many remake producers think is that they can totally make a better film than the original. And often times that isn't the case. You have to keep the essence of the original but put a different spin on it. Audiences have pretty much seen everything now, so you have to approach things differently. And to start, you need to cast believable actors. The way Texas Chainsaw did. Sure it's cool to hate the film, but that movie turned out waaaay better than it deserved. The acting was solid, and it made a now formulaic formula seem realistic. If you believe the actors fear for their lives, then the movie gains credibility. The Chainsaw remakers knew they couldn't recreate any of the creepier aspects of the original (Grandpa), so instead of trying to outright copy it, they made a different film that is more like a better sequel to the original. The pacing and action were improved. The downside, you lose some of that documentary style grittiness. Black Christmas could work if you cast good young actresses instead of the hot flavor of the month girl (Cough, Jessica Alba) They need a girls like Rachel McAdams, Lauren Ambrose, and Kristen Bell.

    What about "Bay of Blood"

    by drew_grgich

Caught this Italian flick on IFC the other night. This predates "Black Christmas" by three years. It is obvious that the 'Friday the 13th' folks were inspired by 'Bay of Blood'.

    by led gopher

I remember when we were studying "Romeo and Juliet" when I was a Freshman in high school.
We watched the film version starring Olivia Husseyas Juliet and the teacher had to walk up to the TV and cover the screen during the brief nude scene Olivia had.
Now keep in mind all the guys in the room were young and driven by hormones, so the denial of seeing young breasts like that didn't make us too happy.
Fortunately though, back then the A&E channel on TV still would keep nudity in the movies they showed and I was able to catch the full scene on televison one night.
Olivia Hussey is indeed forkin' gorgeous. Or she was back then rather.

Olivia Hussey said that on "100 Scariest Movie Moments". I'm just watching clips from the original and thinking, "Damn, that's some scary-ass stuff"...and the fact we never find out who did it or if he's captured makes it even scarier.

    by mr. profit

It's sad, people will love a guy like Eli Roth because he loves to talk about boobs and bush and R rated horror and blah blah blah. Who cares. It seems to me if a film maker goes to Comic Con and jerks the audience off, they'll blindly love them no matter what. You cant tell me with a straight face that Cabin Fever was better than the TCM remake, or even the crappy Wrong Turn. It was supposed to be the scariest movie ever, but the Snakeman Drug PSA was scarier than Cabin Fever. How is a movie where people get infected and bleed to death even remotely scary? But fanboys will love this crap because the director slums it with them at conventions. Then they'll unfairly beat up on one project and hail another as the second coming.... And they even do that with veteran film makers who lost their touch. Land of the Dead was not nearly as entertaining as the Dawn Remake. Even Return of the Living Dead got Land beat. But people will crap all over the remake as if it is a terrible film and overpraise Land as if it's the best Zombie film ever. You can't change the way Horror is going. Not when many fans also have huge egos and always think they can churn out something better than Hollywood. And in many cases it's true. But being so damn jaded prevents many people from enjoying certain films. People should just relax and not think Hollywood has a personal vendetta against them. It's just movies. You are not going to die.

    You can't remake Black Christmas!

    by remcycle

It really is classic...what makes it great is that they never catch the killer, you never find out what drives him, and that's really what made it so creepy. If you try to do that now you get a bunch of haters screaming "so how does it end? Why was the killer there?" It's kinda the same thing as these people seeing Ringu and saying "oh...she came out of the TV...oooooohhh...scary...*sigh*" Some people need their horror (especially their horror) spoon fed, and that would absolutely kill something like Black Christmas. So bring on the spoonfeeding, Weinstein brothers! Let's see how bad you can destroy this film...

this is my favorite movie horror movie of all time - and in the top 4/5 of my favorite movies ever... it also arguably the greayest film 2 come out of canada... maybe porky's... also done by bob clark though... i've heard about this for awhile and have never been happy about it... never will - even if it is great - it will never top original - you could hope at least that maybe it'll raise some awareness about the original with some of the youngins... but alas - they don't usually care that much... this is right up there with teh suspiria remake... useless... un-needed... and extremely disturbing...

oh well.. best of luck to all us fan boys...

Why does everybody bitch and moan about remakes, especially ones they have yet to see? It doesn't fucking change the original, get the fuck over it. the new hip thing...

    by havocschultz

actualy... it's the new hip thing to tell people "it must be the new hip thing to hate on remakes..."

so we don't like the idea of remakes... they're haven't been many lately that should even be allowed to be mentioned in the same conversation as the originals... like the fog... arguably - one of the best remakes ever - was the thing... carpenter seemed to actually care bout making a good movie with actors... not a pretty movie looking movie that is safe for all ages that stars a couple of people that aren't just on magazine covers - i think they actually WERE magazine covers... just propped upright for when the cameras rolled... like that "ghost" in 3 men and a baby... or whatever... at least the hills have eyes remake i believe is being done by alexandre aja... and say what u will about haute tension and it's ending - it was damn enjoyable up to that point - had some good suspense - and even after the "twist" - it gets props for being completely ludicrous and excessive... so at least he might be a fan of making a good movie - not just a "successful" movie - besides - you can't have 2 many pretty faces in the hills have eyes... and with that - i'm out to finish the script for a remade horror film that never existed but i'm tying to fit in as much gore sex and use of drugs and the words "fuck" and "cunt" as possible with a "G" rating... wish me luck...
    take care...

In this flick you absolutely see the beginnings of the slasher movie - Friday the 13th seems pretty direct in its ripping-off of this eerie little flick. Whats interesting about it is that there's a pretty complex plot going on, involving multiple plots and villains, so u got that on top of the grisly knifings and hangings...
