Alfred has turned against Batman! Caine to teach Bale's magician enemy in Christopher Nolan's THE PRESTIGE!!!

Published at:  Oct 28, 2005 4:11:03 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here! THE PRESTIGE looks to be shaping up quite nicely. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as turn of the century stage magicians who are at odds with each other, feuding as it were. Now Michael Caine has been added to the cast list as the mentor to Hugh Jackman's character. All this directed by Christopher Nolan, who seems to be borrowing a lot from his BATMAN BEGINS cast. I have the book and have begun reading it. I really dig it so far. Just now getting into the turn of the century stuff (ie it's starting to get reaallll good). Can't wait to dig into the book further and I'm even more anxious to see what Nolan and crew do with this flick!!! Oh, and it seems Caine has also scored a role in Alfonso Cuaron's THE CHILDREN OF MEN!

This is one of the best premises for a movie I've heard in a long time, and with such talent attached to it, it can't be anything less than fantastic. One of my most anticipated movies of next year.

Unless she dies horribly after the first few minutes. No, seriously, she is the only terrible casting choice in Batman Begins.

A wonderful actor and very pleasant human being (he was kind enough to sign the inside of a book I was reading when I bothered him at a London pub a few years ago). God bless you Sir.

I quite understand what you mean. There are many examples of actors where it looks like it wouldn't work when you see the names on paper and try to imagine it but at least give them a chance. Just think about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I never imagined that Kilmer and DowneyJr. would be a perfect match in it before having seen it.

I'd still rather see the next "Van Helsing" than this. I'm also still disappointed with how "Howl's Moving Castle" turned out. Why change so much of a wonderful book and tack an anti-war message on? -sigh-

    by anna valerious

I go through that a lot with men sometimes...I just think it's a shitty double standard that when you can obsess over your favorite movies it's ok, but when a woman does it, you have to be an asshole. So please, I don't do it to you. Also, you would not believe the female fanbase for "Van Helsing"...the monster movies of the Sommersverse are chick flicks...and since he's surrounded by women at home, it makes sense.

Lu found her character Rachel to be an irritating bitch. I just don't care for her. I'm glad she's not with Chris Klein anymore, but their courtship sounded nausiating. Another suggested they should do a drinking game whenever her nipples are visible through her blouse in "Batman Begins". And I have a feeling lots of you will do that, too.

Unlike Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

    by plum

The Prestige is about stage magicians- card tricks, that kind of thing, with deception and sleight-of-hand as a major theme. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, while also absolutely fantastic, is about real magic. Also, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell took place during the Napoleonic Wars, if I'm remembering correctly, which is the early 19th century. The Prestige is closer to the turn of the 20th century. Either way, this movie sounds great; here's hoping it doesn't turn out to be another exampe of "great premise, poor execution."

*SPOILERS* Question about the book's ending

    by farley flavors

***I'M NOT KIDDING! THERE ARE MAJOR, BOOK-RUINING SPOILERS AHEAD SO IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK AND PLAN TO STOP READING RIGHT NOW!***

Regarding the very end, I understand that the living Angier transported himself into the dead Angier, but why was he able to stay alive (and apparently immortal) until the present day? It seems like this wasn't really addressed. Or was the man who came out of the crypt at the end not even Angier and I totally missed something?

    *SPOILERS* Just finished the book

    by noirsith

I just fresh finished the book this morning and I believe it is indeed Angier that comes out of the tomb as he never died. But it still kind of left me asking more questions about the Bordens and is what the little boy nicholas keeps referring to as his brother, his prestige? I gather I will understand more as the day goes on as I just finished reading it but for now I feel still kind of confused.

"And about that last post, NO FLAMING."

    by docpazuzu

"please, I don't do it to you." ...... Are you serious, Anna? Women do NOT get flamed more for their tastes than men in the TalkBacks. For every person - male or female - professing a love for any particular film or genre, there are a hundred hateful flamers. Asking not to be flamed because you don't flame others is a surefire way to draw withering broadsides from people who take issue with your tastes. Especially considering your diabolical love for Van Helsing and LXG.

    "just acting like bitches"

    by docpazuzu

Well, I'm sure I needn't bring up old sayings concerning heat and kitchens. Needless to say, if one suffers sleepless nights as a reslut of being ridiculed for one's tastes by some people, then one ought to reconsider if an internet forum rank with rabid, opinionated fantards is really such a great place to be. If one throws things like Van Helsing and LXG into a public arena, as well as fan-related activities which by some might be considered worthy of derision or at the very least a few laughs, then one is going to have to resign oneself to the inevitibility of being met by both agreement and scorn. Them's the facts of internet fandom.
