Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a bit of news about Bill Condon's follow-up to KINSEY, the musical DREAMGIRLS, a fictionalized retelling of Diana Ross and the Supremes' rise to power and glory in MoTown. Danny Glover has joined the cast according to Hollywood Reporter. When Glover is good, he's great. When he's bad, he's still good, so we're in a win-win situation here! This movie is shaping up rather nicely, dontcha think?

If Dreamgirls was about the Supremes....

    by sundancekeed

then why do I remember the young woman who did the role on Broadway being extremely rotund? You can call Diana Ross a lot of things but large isn't one of them.

    rotund= Flo Ballard character

    by entrailsoup

Sundanced, the lead of the show is the character based on Flo Ballard, not Diana Ross, hence the rotundness.... not that Flo was rotund to begin with, but when she got moved to the background and the producer made Diana the lead (because her higher register was more "marketable" to the white population), she started drinking and gaining weight, leading to her ouster from the group. If anything this movie might bring to light the actual backstabbing and motown politics few people are aware of.

    Effie

    by plum

It doesn't matter if Effie is fat or thin, as long as she's a diva with a huge gospel/blues voice. Michael Bennett cast actresses of several body types in the role.

The "Diana Ross" role- Deena- will be played by Beyonce Knowles, one of the few cases of blatant celebrity casting that might actually work.

Anyway, Dreamgirls isn't an exact analogue of the Supremes' story, or Bennett would have gotten sued.

    by ender's jeesh

Don't know/ don't care if movie is good or bad, but I'll never watch that anti-American asshole Glover in another thing unless it's an Academy Award video montage after he dies. Sick to death how gleeful (and stupid) the Left is getting over this CIA clusterfuck. Morons... And you wonder why you keep losing elections. Hate doesn't win, people.

    by nycguy

It's sort of based on the Supremes, but the stories have major differences. While Dreamgirls has a fairly happy ending, The Supremes unfortunately do not. Just ask Florence Ballard.

    by sundancekeed

Pass. I've yet to see her in anything that's shown me she can act her way out of a sack. But I did read Mary Wilson's book a few years back and it really is a wonder The Supremes managed to get more than an album or two out with all the infighting going on, plus Mary and Flo really did get the shaft from Ms.Ross and Berry Gordy. I'd love to see THAT story on the screen.

What Makes This Movie Sound So Bad, Schmucks?

    by rebeck

Is it the hit Broadway musical it's based on, the interesting director or the all-star black cast?? I'm just curious. Fuckin' idiots. Do you guys like ANY movies that don't have a fucking superhero in them?! Grow up.

    Amen, Rebeck.

    by plum

As if the fact that the people on this board won't see "Dreamgirls" automatically dooms it to box-office failure. You guys do get that we're only a small fraction of the movie audience, and one that's not necessarily reflective of the population at large, right?

As for Knowles- I don't like her much myself, but she is well-suited for the role of Deena. She needs to be a pretty girl with a smooth, mainstream voice to provide a contrast to Effie's plainer looks and more unique, blues-influenced singing.

It's Effie this movie depends on. If the actress they cast isn't hugely charismatic, there will be problems.

    Ender's Jeesh -- "Hate doesn't win, people."

    by duanejones

and perjury? how's that doing for your dipshit neaderthal side of the political spectrum? gutting envrionmental, economic, ethical standards, even after we all thought clinton lowered them as far as one could go? is that what you'll be crowing to your grandchildren about when they ask "what did you do in the war, pappy?" lying about non-existent nuclear capacities to start a needless war that distracted from capturing those truly responsible for 9/11? is that a big "win" for you all, times 2,000? true, we haven't won a popularity contest in a while, which i guess is the arbiter of worthiness - how many people agree with you. well, the vast majority of americans agree with me that george ii is doing a miserable job, arguably the worst of any president, ever. if you love the left's ability to lose, rest assured election day 2006 is gonna suck for you and you ilk. election day 2008, also. have fun, winner!

Queen Latifa as EFFIE!! wekk 10 years ago

    by emilyqfan

DAMN it. The Queen would have been great as Effie.

Beyonce might be Deena but the Effie role steals the show and has the best songs.

I think QL might be to old for Effie now and that sucks.

They DO need someone with a HUGE voice.

    Dreamgirls

    by ungodlysorrows

I have to admit that Dreamgirls is not my favorite musical, but I will most likely see it because.. yes, it IS a musical and I want to see more made.

I'm more excited about Rent. I'm not sure if reuniting (most of) the original broadway cast will work since they are pretty much 10 years too old for the parts they will play. I'm hoping for the best and will definately plop down my green on opening day.

Danny Glover should star in Rambo IV

What's one more 'I'm too for this shit' for pop culture references if it were to be uttered by Rambo himself while standing next to Danny Glover in sort of an homage to 'lethal weapons'.

Nuh-uh. I like Queen Latifah, but she does not have the vocal chops for Effie, and if you think she does, you haven't listened to Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You" lately. We're not just talking about a good belter here, we're talking about someone whose voice overloads the microphone.
