Who's Seen SAW II?

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Quite a bit of the online horror press, evidently. There was some sort of shindig this past week for the film over at Lions Gate, primarily for people who were big supporters of the first film. I wanted to like SAW, and I certainly respect the ambitions behind it, but I just didn’t care for big chunks of it. Still, enough of you did that there’s a sequel, and one of our spies took a peek:

Hey Harry, Mori...

Just came back from what was called "The North American Premiere" of Saw II, at the Montreal Madness Movie Marathon; a special 10pm-to-6am horror film all-nighter that's in it's second year of existence.

I attended the first marathon as well which also premiered the original Saw, so I was hyped up for this one, as this sorta crowd is very receptive to Jigsaw's wacky adventures.

Let's get down to the meat of it: Saw II is a much superior film to the first outing for a couple of different reasons. First and foremost, Leigh Wenelle has a written a much better and focused narrative this time around. Gone are the pointless time jumps from the original, and the useless Danny Glover side-story that seemed so tacked on in the previous outing.

This time, Saw II focuses on the killer's taunting of one detective; Eric Matthews, as played very convincingly by Donnie Wahlberg. This conflict between the two men is what everything Saw II revolves around, even when it doesn't seem like it during the course of the plot.

The main hitch this time, is that Jigsaw has kidnapped 7 strangers and plunked them in a fun house of sorts, and has video cameras installed to watch their every move. This was not for Jigsaw's benefit, but the police instead. Early on, Matthews and a Swat team are able to track down Jigsaw, and find the video feeds showing the 7 people arguing and wondering where they now find themselves.

Jigsaw, knowing his time is reaching it's end due to cancer, lets himself be caught so he can talk to Matthews face to face. This is also when he reveals that one of the 7 strangers in the house is the detective's only son, Daniel.

The house itself is slowly being flooded with a nerve gas that will kill each person, unless they can find certain vials of antidote hidden throughout the house. They have only 3 hours to do, or the gas will reduce each person to having "blood pour out of every orafice" as Jigsaw himself artistically puts it.

As always, Jiggy has left certain clues and nasty traps to make sure his subjects play the game by his rules. The tension of the film has a great build up, as Detective Matthews gets more and more desperate as the timer counts down, and he watches his son get deader and deader as time goes on.

The story is obviously simple, and it's this singularity that makes Saw II enjoyable. Rather then a time-jumping, flash-back ridden hodgepodge that I found the first film to be, Saw II lets you simply enjoy the blood and chaos that ensues. The 7 housemates are pretty standard; bitchy girl, tough guy, quiet loner, level-headed guy, etc...each actor works well with the material, and everyone hits the right notes, which is good for relative unknown cast. Shawnee Smith returns to reprise her role from the first Saw, as the only survivor of Jigsaw's games. You really sympathize with her, as it's just so...unfair she has to be put through this kinda ordeal again...

Saw II doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the red stuff, it's just as gory and satisfying as the first, but the various traps and tests aren't nearly as creative and fun as some of Jigsaw's earlier contraptions. They're just plain violent and spew alot of blood and pain.

The switch to Darren Lynn Bousman as a director doesn't seem to have had much of a different effect, as Saw II looks much like the first, and uses alot of the same visual tricks. The sets look pretty much the same, all the rooms having that dingy, venereal-disease ridden flavor that Courtney Love might feel at home in.

Speaking of which, if you are expecting the same twist ending as the first, then you won't be dissapointed. While it's simply not as shocking or as cool, it's still pretty interesting, and took the entire story in a different direction. Certain references to the first film also crop up near the end, and the audience gobbled it up. Great reactions.

So while Saw II isn't reinventing the wheel of horror flicks, it's still one of the better entries I've seen all year. So if you liked the first Saw, it's a definte must-see...but if you didn't dig the style and execution, this sequel won't make you a fan either.

If you use this, call me The Switcher!

As long as they don’t make the same mistake they did with that miserable Danny Glover subplot in the first one, I may well like this one more. Here’s hoping we’ll have some fun gore in the theaters next weekend. Thanks, Switcher!

"Moriarty" out.

    Just asking...

    second and bored.

    by unclefishbits

c'mon... we should be happy to take what we can get. Fact is, even though Doom was terrible... and this could be... you need to pump your money towards this stuff rather than the filth that the squares see. Look what is out.... what are you gonna see? Me... the original house of wax, or maybe Night of the Living Dead... but that is beside the point.... and I think I am just bored.... but I think I am second.

  • Oct. 23, 2005, 7:27 p.m. CST

    i enjoyed the first...

    by movieman742

so I will see this one. I liked the first one even with the flaws that it had. I thought it was just a fun movie to watch. I don't really care for horror movies and the first Saw was the first horror movie I paid to see in theaters. I am wondering if the second one does well if they will do a yearly release out of future sequals.

the first movie was ok....I can see why people who like to think about what they are watching hated it...but it was still solid escapist fare for those who like that sort of thing....2 can only be an improvement...I'm hoping for better performances this time around...and a plot with less overtly obvious holes

then what the fuck are you doing expending energy to type, and add a post to a talkback for a movie that makes you bored. if you really were bored and not interested, maybe you would have just closed the browser.

saw is definetly a divider film

    by goondock

If you love it without being able understand why others would find some aspects stupid then you obviously spend very little time thinking about the films that you watch....If you write the whole thing off as crap then your a bit too pretentious to realize that movies don't always have to correspond with real life...which is why we watch them anyway...I'll agree with any one giving a mixed review....there were parts in the original that worked, but it lacked a certain intelligence that was needed to make it a solid film....lets hope that the sequel is a bit better, so maybe more people will come to like it

THIS is how the Joker need to be portrayed...

    by ZeroCorpse

In the next Batman movie, they would be wise to pay attention to the kind of psychotic toying with people we see in SAW, because this (and Se7en) have the whole Joker mentality down, minus the clown-themed twists and trademark maniacal laughter from the Clown Prince of Crime. If the next Batman movie gives me THIS kind of Joker, I will have more respect for the filmmakers than I could measure in mere box office dollars.

  • Oct. 23, 2005, 8:48 p.m. CST

Has to be better than the first

    by Pdid

Honestly, this really has to be better than the first one, which was more unintentionally funny than a horror movie. The entire theater erupted in laughter when Carrie Elwes extremely overacted the final 20 minutes or so. Definitely worth checking out in a few months when the torrent hits, but not something I'll fall over myself to see. Also, for those bashing Danny Glover in the first one, it was pretty obvious to me that he had been living in a refrigerator box under a bridge for a while before they grabbed him to do the movie (or at least thats how he looked to me).

  • Oct. 23, 2005, 9 p.m. CST

Put me in the ZeroCorpse camp on this one.

    by I Dunno

If they made The Joker out to be this sort of villain, then a Batman film would finally do him justice. And I don't mean excessive gore. Everyone knows that Batman is PG-13 but the same level of depravity with the gore implied would make a kick ass film. The Joker would be more hands on of course and would have to be there to enjoy his victims' deaths but the general vibe would be the same. Then again, I think "Arkham Asylum" would make a kick ass Batman film even though I know it wouldn't make a dime, so what do I know.

The review doesn't give away the ending, which characters live or die, etc. It gives a pretty general synopsis of the plot, 95% of which is readily apparent if you've seen the trailer. There is some info in the review (i.e. the cancer thing, or the fact that the son is in the house) that I can understand some people would consider a spoiler, but I think if you have read any review on this site (and most others) you realize that it will disclose some facts about the movie. Some people who refuse to watch trailers, etc and who want to be completely unspoiled (apparently those like yourself) may be annoyed by the review, but I thought it was much more restrained in giving away info than a lot of others I've read on here. Maybe you know more about the movie than you wanted to, but I'd hardly say that the movie is completely spoiled based on that review.

There's Sawmthing About Jigsaw... Anyhoo. Hell yeah, if the Joker was that sadistic, it'd be amazing. Of course, he'd have to be much more involved, than just fucking with them from a distance. As for Saw, I thought it was garbage, just a horribly done movie... but it DID have a good story and potential. Hopefully Saw II will fulfill that potential. There's nothing wrong with the tagline either, if you hear it in the context of the creepy voice, but ok, without that, it is bad.

While I enjoyed both Saw and Saw II, both film ultimately lacked what I feel is an often overlooked element that exists in all the great horror films: a powerful force for good. Mark Hamill's Joker still the best

    by phelion2

mark hamill's voice work as The Joker has been the best interpretation of the character for the screen, the height for me being Mask of the Phantasm. Mask of the Phantasm got actual theatrical release, which luckily I caught and enjoyed tremdously. MotP is still the only batman film I have bought, on LASER DISC no less, it is still far superior to the current quality of DVD. I felt it the the most adult flavor of all the on screen Batman works (the reveal of Abe Vigoda's character Sal Valestra post-mortem is choice!) Kevin Conroy's gravelly "Jjjjjo-KERRR" just before he knocks out one of his teeth just makes you cream your under-roo's. I think MotP is also the first animated feature to be done entirely on black paper (1992) was still pre-full blown CGI invasion). Anyhow, I have no real interest in either SAW or SAW II, but love any chance to say how awesome mark hamill's Joker is and how much Tim Burton sucks when he tries to play in someone else's sandbox. He started the road that took us to shumacher's "Batman and Robin" and I hope he never get let near another comic book piece again.
