Jamie Foxx really thinks Fantasia is his DREAMGIRL!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an update on Bill Condon's DREAMGIRLS. Jamie Foxx has spoken out about his desire to have singer Fantasia in the cast (playing Effie in the adaptation of the musical). It's been talked about at places like Zap2it and now the New York Post has run a story on it.
I am a modern pop music illiterate, so I don't know anything about Fantasia, but I do know that I fully trust Bill Condon to cast his movies. He made both Brendan Frasier and Chris O'Donnell turn in great performances (especially Frasier) in GODS & MONSTERS and KINSEY. If Condon agrees with Foxx on this, then I'm in. What about you?

Jaime Foxx annoys the hell out of me. He's a piss poor actor and a very good imitator (Ray), who now because of an undeserved Oscar (that had more to with race than anything) thinks he's God's gift to earth. Not too mention that stupid fucking Kanye West song is way too annoying. I can't imagine ever saying "wow, Jamie Fox is in that new movie I've got to go see that". Unless of course it' a new installment of Faces of Death, and he's eaten by a pack of ravaging bears, while playing the part of Nelson Mandela in a stupid fucking biopic that nobody wants to see. That or the "Wanda" movie. I hope his career fails miserably. Fuck him.

For a big role like Effie, they should go for a proven powerhouse. Odd that no one has mentioned Heather Headley, the Tony winner from Broadway's AIDA. She rips the roof off with vocals that take your breath away.

Fantasia is an amazing singer who is perfect for the role, she was literally born to play it. Some singers when they perform you can just sense an inate acting abilty shining through. And why the Jamie Fox bashing, didnt't any one see him in Collateral and Ray, hasn't he earned the right for his opinion to be respected ? If she gets the role I think a few people will be forced to eat their words as she would be astounding :)

As for my 2 cents, regardless of her reading comprehension, Fantasia won AI for being an EXTREMELY gifted performer with a great personality. SHE admitted to the world in her book about her incomplete education. Why are you using this against her in such a low-brow way. She's already proven that she's willing to work as hard as has to to turn in a good performance. If she accepted such a part, I'd trust her to do a good job. And FYI she is back on track to complete her education you heartless bastards. -

You are so fucking wrong about Martin Landau. His performance as Bella Lugosi was brilliant piece of work. Sorry, that's just bullshit - and I didn't like it when Jackson himself said it. What Jackson SHOULD have won for was his performance in "Jackie Brown". That was definitely a career-best and superb work. He was hilarious, scary, real, the whole thing. But why do we have to trash one person's performance to raise up another's? It's just stupid. And it belies your point about Blacks not crying foul when the one they want to win doesn't win.

In some respects, blacks as a large vocal minority, have tipped the balance in terms of how discrimination issues have been addressed. In some respects we as black people are too quick to blame racism for everything. Thats said, there is still alot of discrimination going on against all kinds of people, not just black people. Women and other minorities can sometimes get even worse treatment in many situations that aren't even recognised. I am against reparations and 'positive discrimination' because of the resentment it breeds. At the end of the day discrimination of any form isn't positive for those who don't benefit from it.

First, it isn't the story of the Supremes. It's about a 60's girl group like the supremes. Second, the part of Effie (For which Fantasia is being considered) is SUPPOSED to be fat and ugly, but have an AMAZING singing voice. The show traces the group through the time in music history when it transitions from records/radio to televison. So they take the Pretty girl with the ok voice(Deena/Beyonce) and put her in front and move Effie to the back.
I don't know if Fantasia is right for this, I didn't see her audition but Effie HAS to be played by a great actress - what this girl goes through - yikes! I say they already have enough top line talent to get butts in the seats, get some unknown that will blow the roof off to play effie. Condon is gay so I'm sure he'll get this right. -
Effe in "Dreamgirls" is the girl with the talent. She can SING (which, though debated, I fully believe Fantasia can, gloriously). Effe is the lead singer of The Dreams but a third of the way into the show she is replaced by the much more visually pleasing Deena (Beyonce). Jennifer Holiday played Effe onstage. She wasn't ugly, just enormous. Fantasia, though not big, is not a beauty. So her casting isn't a bad idea. Though personality-wise it seems she is much more of a Lorrell, the Loretta Devine character who is somewhat the comic relief and the middle Dream.
