It looks like Umbridge has been cast in POTTER 5! She'll bring out the kid in ya'!!!

Published at:  Oct 19, 2005 10:46:31 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some interesting talk about who's been cast as one of the most despicable characters in any of the Harry Potter novels, Ms. Dolores Umbridge. It's been a rumor that VERA DRAKE's Imelda Staunton was up for the role for a couple weeks (although I hadn't heard that rumor until today, myself), but today she appeared on ITV's Good Morning program and confirmed that she had the role. She also said she hasn't read the script yet, but will begin filming in January.

I really like this casting. Staunton can be stern and creepy. She needs to stretch out her face a little more, to look like a frog... Umbridge is such a bitch! Just thinking about her pisses me off. Imelda Staunton will make me hate her guts in ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and I can't wait. What do you other Potter freaks think about this development?

    by nate champion

This is actually a terrific choice. Book 5 is the turning point in the series... the characters really come into their own, and as foil Umbridge is arguably the greatest villian Rowling has cooked up. Then again... all three Potter movies are shite compared to the books, so this is likely a pittance at best.

    Order Of Phoenix....

    by onefalsemove

The Order of The Phoenix was so unbelievably dull that I can't even begin to think how it will translate into a movie. Rowling got lazy and didn't want to write about any of the stuff that made the other novels so entertaining. The entire book is events going on that Harry (and the reader) are not privy to, and Harry gets grumpy, and more stuff happens and Harry is kept in the dark, and he gets grumpy. All in all I think this novel will make a poor translation to the screen.

    by dragonfrog

She would have been awesome. A brilliant actress, and physically perfect for the part. Imelda Staunton isn't a bad choice - I certainly like her as an actress and would have given her the oscar for Vera Drake, but I find her terribly likeable, perhaps too likeable for the part. I hope she can pull off the menace and sadism necessary to make Umbrage truly deliciously horrible. With Judi Dench I would have had no doubts. With Imelda, I am less certain. I hope she can find the brutal coldness behind the insincere sweetness that is Umbrage's facade.

A drab ugly toad of a woman with a high-pitched breathy girlish voice; mediocre to the last degree. People forget that Judi Dench had and has one of the most sensual presences and the richest voice ever displayed by a Brit actress. She has eyes like a puma and still, though never beautiful, a very handsome old women. I can't hardly see her in an Alice-band, tittering.

It was a teen-movie with proper issues, un-like shit like HOW TO WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON. I think real teens can realate to this girl, no-matter what their beliefs are. I agree that the pro-Christian girl was made out to be a cunt, but she represented a biggoted point-of-view, she was the flip-side of the main girl. But it was cool to see a teen-movie deal with religion, teen-pregnancy, disability and homosexuality. Plus Mandy Moore playing a no-bra-religibitch!

Just get this one over with so we can move on to Half Blood Prince. Like 4, 5 has plenty of room for improvement, the book is just too long and bloated and it will help a TON to cut out useless subplots. And for the record, Tonks is probably early 20's, she's been an Auror for about 3 years or so. I've thought of Knightley as well, but probably not a great fit for the role. Way too hot.

Imelda vs Judi and Mandy vs Jenna (Saved)

    by oisin5199

I hadn't thought of Imelda, but she's a perfect choice. I also had assumed Judi, and also thought of the woman who played Furlow on Farscape (the farmer's wife in Babe) - but she's Australian. Anyway, I think Imelda is a better choice than Judi, because Umbridge seems like a nice balance between menacing and comedic while Judi could pull off the menacing but maybe not the other (as well). What makes Umbridge truly scary is that she seems perfectly polite and almost innocent on the exterior but is truly evil inside. And Mandy Moore's character wasn't necessarily "bad" in Saved - she was portrayed as multidimensional as well. But she was also the one who was imposing her will and beliefs on others - forcing them to come around to her point of view (certainly negates free will), which is certainly not a Christian value, despite the fact that Christians have historically done this.

    by performingmonkey

Anyone who thinks this needs to read book 5 again. Yes, it goes deeper into Harry's mindset and includes a lot of moving backwards and forwards and frustration, but it'll still work well in the movie. I hope they set a much more adult tone because this is the book where it comes in. They will, of course, turn the action sequence with Voldemort and the Death Eaters at the end into a massive set piece beyond what's in the book. And a large amount of the 900 or whatever pages of material will be excised, with only the most important scenes making it. I thought Annette Badland was the perfect Umbridge (she looks so right, sort of toad-like! and can do that evil girly thing that J.K. Rowling describes in the book) but I suppose Imelda Staunton has Oscar credentials and she is a damn good actress. They're probably gonna have to make her up differently for the role.
