It looks like Umbridge has been cast in POTTER 5! She'll bring out the kid in ya'!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some interesting talk about who's been cast as one of the most despicable characters in any of the Harry Potter novels, Ms. Dolores Umbridge. It's been a rumor that VERA DRAKE's Imelda Staunton was up for the role for a couple weeks (although I hadn't heard that rumor until today, myself), but today she appeared on ITV's Good Morning program and confirmed that she had the role. She also said she hasn't read the script yet, but will begin filming in January.
I really like this casting. Staunton can be stern and creepy. She needs to stretch out her face a little more, to look like a frog... Umbridge is such a bitch! Just thinking about her pisses me off. Imelda Staunton will make me hate her guts in ORDER OF THE PHOENIX and I can't wait. What do you other Potter freaks think about this development?

I think she'll be perfect.

On ITV, she said that she would begin filming in January, and has yet to read the script.

Terrible...just terrible. Bravo sir.

Have to say, that's the first time I've ever been impressed with a headline at this site. Nice.
-
Friggin perfect!!!! Now if we can just get Isaac Singleton Jr. cast as Kingsley Shacklebolt.... And Rachel Hurd-Wood as Luna Lovegood... all will be right with the world

I wish I knew how her acting was, but if Quint likes her I'm sure she's great.

Jesus. What a blown call.

season one i think. fucking great line. that and "look, lady, i don't come down to where you work and slap the dick out of your mouth" are probably the two best mr show lines ever (except for maybe "it's insane, this guy's taint.")

This is actually a terrific choice. Book 5 is the turning point in the series... the characters really come into their own, and as foil Umbridge is arguably the greatest villian Rowling has cooked up. Then again... all three Potter movies are shite compared to the books, so this is likely a pittance at best.
-
They'd make an excellent Looney and Shacklebolt. Yeah, thats about it.
-
Frankly I'm a little more interested in who they get to play Tonks. My lack of imagination is leaning towards the sexy tomboy beanpole. You got better?
-
My brother just asked if the kids are going to be back. You know Harry, Ron, Hermione and all that? They better be. I'm all emotionally invested over here.
-
Since they sliced out all his scenes as Peeves, I'd like to see Ric somewhere in the series, even in a small role.
-
The last half of HP5 OotP was difficult to read, the chaos was very unsettling. the future of the school seemed very bleak
-
The Order of The Phoenix was so unbelievably dull that I can't even begin to think how it will translate into a movie. Rowling got lazy and didn't want to write about any of the stuff that made the other novels so entertaining. The entire book is events going on that Harry (and the reader) are not privy to, and Harry gets grumpy, and more stuff happens and Harry is kept in the dark, and he gets grumpy. All in all I think this novel will make a poor translation to the screen.
-
No on Keira. I say Kelly MacDonald is perfect. And she's worked with the director before, more then once I believe. So I hope it comes to pass. As for the kids, no worries, they're back.

This is a good sign in my book; I was always annoyed that she didn't play Mrs Weasley; Julie walters is such a ham. But Umbridge is like Molly's evil twin; a sort of parody of the good mother. Fanstastic.
-
would have been a better choice for Umbridge.
-
Judi Dench would've been the perfect Umbridge but Imelda will do a great job too.
-
And for that matter, who is Vera Drake? :P
-
I can't believe they never cast Annette. She's far more right for the role than Imelda Staunton. She played the only surviving "Farting Alien" from the new Doctor Who series.

Phoenix is the worst book in the series nad Half-Blood is the best.

thus the gross headline. It's also a very good film, and she was robbed at the Oscars! She'll be good as Umbridge!

Just because you don't like Potter, soesn't mean others can't have a differing opinion and not be gay....LOSER.

That's how I pictured Umbridge, though she sadly is not with us anymore to play the part.
-
Not looking forward to pissy adolescent Harry, but that hand-carving is seriously twisted, which naturally makes for interesting viewing. I know Radcliffe is in for OOTP, but are Rupert Grint and Emma Watson signed as well?
-
So you've either seen the films and are therefore a 'fag' by your own description, or you haven't and you're speaking from a position of complete ignorance. Hmmm. Bit of a dick aren't you?
-
We all have a little interest in gaydom. And while I may be a bit curious or have thought about what it may be like, I have not gone the distance.......You see coming to this message board is research, atleast that's what I tell myself. Meshuggah baby!!

You seem to be named after a counting crows song. Now if that doesn't prove my point........
-
Which just proves that you can't read (this is in addition to already having proved you have no taste in films or apparently music. Whew! Busy day for you!)
-
Keira Knightley would be interesting, but I always pictured Emma Bunton a.k.a. Baby Spice. Find a picture of her with pigtails (I think they have one on IMDB) and you'll see what I mean. Also, I'd like to see Rachel Weisz as Bellatrix & Joely Richardson or Natasha Henstridge as Narcissa.

I cant believe you made me write that. anyway, umbrigde should look like my old french teacher, which is to say she should look like that toady sluglike receptionist/secret agent in monsters inc. but staunton will be good as well. hope they do this as a fascist takeover movie.
-
Both Vera and Umbridge are horrible, horrible people who think they're doing the right thing. Anyway, I still want Sophia Myles to play Tonks. She would rule.
-
It's about wizards isn't it?
-
It's a shame they had already cast Miriam Margoyles as Sprout she would have made the hands down PERFECT Umbridge, she's dumpy and toad like already. I can't remember how old Tonks is meant to be but she was having dalliances with Sirius so I think she's older than Knightley. I'd go with Rachel Stirling (the tipping the velvet girl).**** And Vera Drake is not a horrible person AT ALL, jeez have you even seen the film??

She would have been awesome. A brilliant actress, and physically perfect for the part. Imelda Staunton isn't a bad choice - I certainly like her as an actress and would have given her the oscar for Vera Drake, but I find her terribly likeable, perhaps too likeable for the part. I hope she can pull off the menace and sadism necessary to make Umbrage truly deliciously horrible. With Judi Dench I would have had no doubts. With Imelda, I am less certain. I hope she can find the brutal coldness behind the insincere sweetness that is Umbrage's facade.

You should still check out Vera Drake, Anna. It's not trying to sway people either in either direction, just a film that shows bad times in an honest and intelligent way. If you're even remotely interested in abortion issues, you should give it a chance. One of the best films of last year!
-
I forgot to mention that i also like FREDDY GOT FINGERED. Now that would make a GREAT double-bill with VERA DRAKE!
-
Ummm... I would say I have the upperhand, taste wise, in not liking a Harry Potter movie or the Counting Crows. Well if your speaking queer wise, I guess I'm the loser. BTW...no offense
-
Are you kidding; I'm sure she'd be able for the job, as her abilities are beyond question, but anyone who thinks that she'd be well cast as Umbridge is kidding themselves. A drab ugly toad of a woman with a high-pitched breathy girlish voice; mediocre to the last degree. People forget that Judi Dench had and has one of the most sensual presences and the richest voice ever displayed by a Brit actress. She has eyes like a puma and still, though never beautiful, a very handsome old women. I can't hardly see her in an Alice-band, tittering.

by anna valerious
I'm pretty much very uncomfortable with it. I mean, she had a family of her own...that just disturbs me. I was pretty upset with the plot of "Saved!" because of the girl thinking she had to have sex to save her relationship and the girl who wanted everyone to do the right thing portrayed as the bad guy. There was only one thing that made me laugh in that movie-
"A Christian girl going into Planned Parenthood can only mean one thing." "She's going to plant a pipe bomb?" :D -
Is still quite attractive, despite her years. I don't see her as Umbridge at all. I was picturing someone the equivalent of a male version of Uncle Vernon.
-
Vera was a working class lady that tried to do what she thought best. It's an attitude that still exists today. It dosen't give fire to either side, just shows it like it is. I liked Saved! It was a teen-movie with proper issues, un-like shit like HOW TO WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON. I think real teens can realate to this girl, no-matter what their beliefs are. I agree that the pro-Christian girl was made out to be a cunt, but she represented a biggoted point-of-view, she was the flip-side of the main girl. But it was cool to see a teen-movie deal with religion, teen-pregnancy, disability and homosexuality. Plus Mandy Moore playing a no-bra-religibitch!
-
People who can't (or won't) make fun of religion make me very uncomfortable - whether they're religious or not. Injecting a bit of humor into religion or people's perception of religion isn't going to send anyone to hell.

by minderbinder
Just get this one over with so we can move on to Half Blood Prince. Like 4, 5 has plenty of room for improvement, the book is just too long and bloated and it will help a TON to cut out useless subplots. And for the record, Tonks is probably early 20's, she's been an Auror for about 3 years or so. I've thought of Knightley as well, but probably not a great fit for the role. Way too hot.
-
I hadn't thought of Imelda, but she's a perfect choice. I also had assumed Judi, and also thought of the woman who played Furlow on Farscape (the farmer's wife in Babe) - but she's Australian. Anyway, I think Imelda is a better choice than Judi, because Umbridge seems like a nice balance between menacing and comedic while Judi could pull off the menacing but maybe not the other (as well). What makes Umbridge truly scary is that she seems perfectly polite and almost innocent on the exterior but is truly evil inside. And Mandy Moore's character wasn't necessarily "bad" in Saved - she was portrayed as multidimensional as well. But she was also the one who was imposing her will and beliefs on others - forcing them to come around to her point of view (certainly negates free will), which is certainly not a Christian value, despite the fact that Christians have historically done this.
-
Kevin "Catholosism Wow" Smiths' Dogma (if you like it or not), is a good example of someone with faith, who is not afraid to poke fun at their own beliefs, and organized religion in general. It can ONLY be healthy!
-
she's actually the first person who popped in my head when I thought about casting Tonks.
-
But without the Dreads. Unless she wanted them! "Wotcha!"

I will say good day to you, Sir.

by performingmonkey
Anyone who thinks this needs to read book 5 again. Yes, it goes deeper into Harry's mindset and includes a lot of moving backwards and forwards and frustration, but it'll still work well in the movie. I hope they set a much more adult tone because this is the book where it comes in. They will, of course, turn the action sequence with Voldemort and the Death Eaters at the end into a massive set piece beyond what's in the book. And a large amount of the 900 or whatever pages of material will be excised, with only the most important scenes making it. I thought Annette Badland was the perfect Umbridge (she looks so right, sort of toad-like! and can do that evil girly thing that J.K. Rowling describes in the book) but I suppose Imelda Staunton has Oscar credentials and she is a damn good actress. They're probably gonna have to make her up differently for the role.
-
Angela Lansbury. Though she might be too old now. She would have been perfect. Anybody who thinks she can't be an evil bitch, just watch the original manchurian candidate - they dont come any fucking colder than that.
-
Give that man a medal! I stand corrected.
