KING KONG - getting leaner, meaner and older?

Hey folks, Harry here... If you're a Kongphile like myself, then you're probably frequenting KongIsKing.net multiple times a day, subscribed to the Yahoo Kong Fan group, and maybe you're hitting Ebay with an insane frequency searching for the latest cool Kong stuff. This isn't anything new for me. This site's background has been Kong since the day after 9/11, the reason... the original 1933 film is my favorite film of all time. That has been the case since I was a little boy and it has consistently alternated with Errol Flynn's THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD ever since.

I absolutely love all this new Kong stuff. I'm dying to play UbiSoft's game, the online trailers for it give me chills - and I don't play video games... but I will play this one. I'm getting the KING KONG Chase Mastercard, cuz... well I'm just that pathetic. I've never had a Star Wars or a Star Trek or Disney Credit Card - but Kong pushes the right buttons. Having said that - there have been little things about King Kong's new look that I wasn't fond of. I thought the wonky tooth was a bit lame. I thought that it gave him a goofy look. I thought his face was a little puffy. Well... I just got sent a pic from Quint that originated from a Sci Fi magazine that was then taken by KongIsKing message boarders to create a compare and contrast side by side that is pretty fucking cool. Here, take a look:

Notice the smaller eyes, the leaner more hardened face and the greyer and more wrinkled face. Personally I feel this face is just full of character. How about you?

    The Adventures of Robin Hood

    by seppukudkurosawa

holds up much better to me than King Kong. That's my favourite movie too...I think it's because I've always had a boy-crush for Errol Flynn. And that's something I'll say quite proudly, because we're talking about Errol fucking Flynn here. The ultimate man. Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk and They Died With Their Boots On have always been up there too. If I had a choice beteen Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland I'd probably chose...er Olivia what the fuck, I'm not actually gay. Kong was never sexy enough for me, though I have to admit he's got very nice eyes in this pic. He's got that wizened, Treebeard if he were an ape quality to him. So anyway, I've just revealed myself to be a closet homosexual Robin Hood fan who occasionally dabbles in bestiality. Why not?

You dont even have to watch the film to know this. Following it at #2 will be a far east film that no one has seen or even heard about. If Kong turns out to be one of the worst films of the year, it will still be #1 on his list.

I'll be the minority on this, I guess.

    by Childe Roland

I was a sucker for cross-eyed Kong. I cried the first time I saw him go off that building. The snaggle-toothed, round-faced Kong felt more relatable to me than the Clint Eastwood Kong, who appears ready to tell an airplane machine gunner to make his day. What can I say? I like my big apes flawed.

    Won't be the worst!

    by Sinisterjim

I think anyone who has followed this production and Peter Jackson's career can say that with ZERO doubt! Just do the math, he's an absolute geek for King Kong, he is an excellent director, great and proven writing team, a proven record with the Ring's trilogy, as well as his previous films, was handed total control by Universal...now, could it be mediocre? absolutely (though I doubt it), will some people hate and loathe it? of course. I have faith in those working on the film, I have no reason to think otherwise at this point, the track record says it all. Fact is, I love the original film, it will always be there, if the remake doesn't work, I can look at it as a missed opportunity, still have the original, and it has survived countless rip-offs, sequels, carttons and a far-from-great, but fun remake in '76. Kong is legend!

    Childe Roland

    by DocPazuzu

The problem with the earlier version, in my opinion, is that he already looks somewhat lovable and goofy. It's much more interesting (as well as more of a challenge for the animators) to make him look physically frightening and then make him win the viewers' hearts as the film progresses. If they can pull that kind of thing off, it will be much more rewarding I think.

  • Oct. 14, 2005, 1:38 p.m. CST

This movie has a big problem.

    by riskebiz

Namely it's all the dinosaurs on that island. Because at the end of this film Carl Denham should say "Twas Beauty that killed the Beast ... but we left a lot of cool prehistoric dinosaurs on that island that have miraculously survived time and were going back to get them!!! Because, sure ... this was one big ape ... but were talking frikkin' T-REX's and raptors and brontosaurs and ..."

when are you going to realize that AICN is about cool news, and also functions as a blog for the AICN crew. Harry is a Kong fan. These talkbacks are basically a comments field, but THIS is his space. If he wants to geek out about every little Kong detail, he's more than allowed. If it was my site, I'd be contantly going on about the I Am Legend movie... Fuck, I'd probably be less restrained than Harry. So fuck off. And the pic looks awesome.

That's some cool shit right there. So sharp it almost hurts my eyes. Also, the new Kong face is better. But really, no duh. Jackson *said* the FX were far from finished when the teasers started showing up, but everyone *had* to bitch how the CGI sucks! And now they start tightening up the look for the creatures, and everyone's so amazed. Gimme a break.

No one knows if the CGI physics will get any better

    by Doc_Strange

Damn Enter button. Like I was saying, I think the problem was with the physics and realism of the CGI. The problem was, the monsters and the special FX moved more like cartoons than realistic characters. I have gone on record many times as to why they should have performers mo-cap characters as opposed to just rendering them and animating them in Maya or whatever plugin they're using these days for CGI characters. The human eye is so complex as to pick stuff like that up so the best way to get good creature performance is to have a human or animal depict the creature they're trying to achieve in order to get it to be more believeable. But hey, what do I know? I don't spend hundreds of millions getting crap CG shots in my movies, a la Spiderman 1 & 2.

  • Oct. 14, 2005, 2:26 p.m. CST

Harry can change his mind whenever he feels like it, maybe Mori

    by RealDoubleJ

Cause whether he intends to or not, it DOES come off looking like an advertisement. Even if he does say every time "hopefully by the end of the week i'll put up a review or two". Harry and Mori like to say they're really busy these days. Good for them. But if they had any respect for the people who liked/loved AICN for being a scooping website with it's finger on the pulse, then they would have handed over the reigns to someone who's got the time to do that....and that ain't Quint. Don't want to knock anyone. I know it's also fashionable to say "oh well, that's the TB for you" but you will get Asshats on it just like you get Asshats on every forum, messageboard and chatroom. On the actual Kong photo, yeah, it does look better now. What would make it better is if someone had the balls to admit that they originally got it wrong, listened to the criticism, took it in, and thank the fans for pointing it out. Not acting as if they're doing us a service in improving their own picture to guarantee the moolah they spent and want back.

  • Oct. 14, 2005, 2:31 p.m. CST

    Looks better...

    by jimmy_009

They shouldn't have released any of that teaser stuff yet, especially if you don't want bitching about it from the fan community. Or maybe that's why they did it, so they could hear about what wasn't working and fix it.

Hell I bet if she didn't shave herself down daily then Jackson could save all that cash on CGI and spend it on Rosie. Just pay her in hamburger meat and crisco!

  • Oct. 14, 2005, 2:38 p.m. CST

I think it makes sense to have him look older and meaner...

    by Flummage

...because the eventuall journey that we see him go through, he basically falls in love, fights to save her, gets ripped from his home, then forced to his death in a place he doesn't understand. It's gonna make the journey more accute. Plus I like the way it gives him a history, a sense that Kong was fighting his biggest battles long before any of them where even born.

If Jackson made the decision (which I STRONGLY doubt!), I can support it to an extent, but at this late in the game, to start over can only mean a lesser score. I have a feeling it's another studio decision, similar to the Troy situation, probably a little too 'classic' for what the think audiences want...hope this is all BS. KONG 2 -- KING KONG vs. DONKEY KONG

    by ZombieSolutions

in a postmodernist action fiesta, the sense shattering sequel to KING KONG begins with our favorite (and not overused at all) giant ape being sucked into a TIME TUNNEL just after he appears to die... he is then hurled into the exciting world of 1982 where he meets DONKEY KONG. first they tussle; in fact, they almost kill each other (and even dabble in some mild rape)! after they have cooled down they realize that mankind is the real enemy and they need some poon. so together they plot to steal the womenz of various ethnic sterotype city laborers, contractors, steveadors, and plumbers and making them stand on top of girders and such. Then they hurl barrels and fireballs at the various day laborers who try in vain to get their girlfriends back. eventually one of the day laborers, MARIO, manages to get to the top of the blue girders, thereby collapsing the building and really fucking up the KONGs something fierce. It's amazing. (features a cameo of DENNIS HOPPER as the Koopa King!)

More sad news, Kong leaves Kong

    by Orionsangels

Peter Jackson made the following statement: "I have greatly enjoyed my collaborations with King Kong, whose original movie made immeasurable contributions to science fiction and fantasy. During the last few weeks, Kong and I came to realize that we had differing creative aspirations for where the new KING KONG should go. Rather than waste time arguing with a dear friend like Kong and trying to unify our points of view, we decided amicably to let another monkey star in the film. I'm looking forward to working with bubbles the chimp, a chmip I long admired, and I thank Kong, whose talent is surpassed only by his graciousness. Wait, what am i saying? Fuck you Kong! bitch"

    more Kong

    by Rupee88

Harry, I think Kong is great too, and you should feature as much Kong on this site as your heart tells you to.

  • A movie that didn't need to be made is a movie that tells a story that has already been told ad nauseum. A film whose remake's only justification is modern moviemaking, ei, FX, music, cinematography, etc. Examples would be Psycho (1998), Godzilla (1998) and Kong (2005). By contrast, for example, Manos: The Hands of Fate, typically regarded as the worst movie ever made, had to be made. Why? Because that particular story hasn't been told on cinema and therefore the film needed to be made. Kong does not. But, as an FX artist, I'm glad movies like this are being made for my own livelihood, not for this film in particular but in general. As for the regular movie going public, I don't particularly get why they'd be interested.

  • Oct. 14, 2005, 10:18 p.m. CST

I dunno, the reason the general public would be interested,

    by aikimoe

is precisely because of new FX, music, cinematography, etc., all of which has become much more sophisticated since the 30's. Plus they've thoroughly enjoyed Jackson's previous efforts. If an artist feels the NEED to make a movie, regardless of anyone else, then that movie NEEDED to be made. In Kong's case, Jackson has wanted to make it for years and millions upon millions of people are LOOKING FORWARD to seeing it, despite the superior tastes of I Dunno and Trik.

It's really hard to compare the two because of the vastly different lighting. Honestly, errant tooth aside, the first one looks more realistic. The second one looks more dramatic but also more cartoonish. That might not work, given the inevitably cartoonish nature of the movement and general physics of the CGI beats. It is only after Kong is rejected by Ann Darrow that he decides to travel to New York so that he can get his teeth fixed by the best oral surgeon he can find. While there Kong joins a health club in order to drop the few hundred extra pounds he's been carrying. All this just to impress a girl. Yeah, the new one brings a much higher level of realism, raising the sense of "being there" ...and pulls you closer, as if Kong is the real deal. I think it will only help the movie succeed. And yeah, Kong shows much more character, with a lifetime of battle scars. It looks more and more like Harry is going to get his dream motion picture.

Dam, now I'll stew about this for the rest of the weekend! I think I'll go for a beer and cheet on Kong's wife. ** Lone Fox...what does that have to do with individual taste? I think we all have our guilty little pleasures...loving something that we know to be, shall we say, less than stellar. Harry has always gone for the bubbling fan approach over hard and critical objectivity, yes? Kinda refreshing really.

Independence Day was hardly one of the worst movies ever.

    by I Dunno

Yes, I recognize the plot holes and the goofy characters and the MacIntosh hacking the alien computer but it was an alien invasion movie. It was based on the cheesy 1950's flying saucer movies that are generally thought of as classics. The FX were out of that magical time after CGI was invented and before it was overused for everything. And it had a President sporting a flight suit before it became a PR stunt. That is, without a doubt, the worst thing I have ever heard anyone say in here in all these years, and it sums up your tastes in movies. Spielberg's War may not have been perfect, but it was lightyears ahead of that Taco Bell cup piece of shit ID4, and the TriPod scenes are pure cinema magic. by www.valiens.com

What does that mean, "the images look so unlively?" It's a CGI ape that doesn't look like something out of Jumanji. What else is it supposed to be? On an unrelated note, I thought the first half of Independence Day was great. (That first day.) And then the second half was total poop. I thought War of The Worlds was going to be another work of genius through the first quarter of the flick. Then I caught on to the fact that Spielberg was just paying homage to all of his own movies via what amounts to an extended chase scene. And the ending with those Nosferatu grandparents by the door was inexcusably atrocious. Still, though, as a movie it was a thousand times better than Independence Day. The cinematography alone is breathtaking at times.
