Behold - The Eighth Wonder of the World! Teaser Image for KONG has Arrived!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Oddly fitting that on the eve of FANTASTIC FEST - that this teaser image for KING KONG has finally arrived - and it is absolutely gorgeous. Still prefer my original 1933 KING KONG one-sheet... but that's just cuz I love Stone Lithography and stylized art over photo-realism... but OH MY GOD - I WANT THIS POSTER NOW! Imagery from this first arrived on an EMPIRE Magazine cover - but here we see that that special cover was a tease to this reveal. Awesome work! Here you go...

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 2:05 p.m. CST

    by vinceklortho

I've seen this one before awhile ago; still pretty cool nonetheless. However, at, they have a better one sheet teaser poster there. Don't know if that is real, but it looks cool. As for the nerd excitement level is reserved for Harry Potter 4, which is at a maximum level of a 9 nerd wattage out of 10. My KONG nerd levels are a basic 7, so after Harry Potter it could go off the charts given a longer trailer with more emotional resonance involving Kong climbing the Empire State building while planes circle him firing off bullets...Nerd levels rising...must control myself.

Where does Harry say this is a teaser poster?

    by Ribbons

Was something updated? All he says is that it's a teaster image. Anyways, I like it. Don't really know how much it'll have to do with the movie, but it's purdy to look at; makes you feel for the big lug and all. I wouldn't mind having a poster of this one meself.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 2:28 p.m. CST

    by bubcus

I like the image. I do agree that it looks like a modern New York and isn't too believable as a 30's era. (For some stupid reason, I seem to think sunsets should look different a hundred years ago than they do today... ARGH). Anyhow, nice to see Harry in the forum. Hi, Harry! I'm looking forward to this movie.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 2:52 p.m. CST

Don't think it's the 1-sheet, could be wrong!

    by Sinisterjim

Aside from everyone pointing out this is the Empire mag. cover, which Harry CLEARLY stated in the piece, the ratio for the movie poster (1 sheet) is incorrect. If you shrink a 27"x40" (1-sheet), the image should be taller, it seems a bit more square. Great image, but it seems framed for a magazine cover, or something with a lot of text, as not to cover the focus of the image. Of course, since Harry knows Mr. Jackson, I'm probably going to get my ass handed to me...but dammit, the ratio still looks wrong! Great image though! Harry, how about your Oct. DVD picks? C'mon man, I'm dyin' here! The Lewton colletion is fantastic, can't believe I wasn't familiar with him.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 3:23 p.m. CST

    Size matters

    by Sinisterjim

I don't know, it would be kinda cool if he decided to increase Kong's size just for the Empire State building, it would tweak the detail-nazis that bitch about every litle, insignificant effect that looks off!

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 3:23 p.m. CST

    He's too gorilla-like.

    by FluffyUnbound

Yes, that sounds like a typical Fluffy asshole thing to say, but this is how I see it: it is possible to make Kong too "perfect" and realistic a giant gorilla. The story arc of Kong is supposed to make you fear him in the beginning, and pity him in the end. If it's too realistic a gorilla, I for one will see him and immediately think "Koko wants to do sign language" and will always root for him and against the humans, even on the island where he's supposed to be a fearsome threat. Basically this is the problem I had the Godzilla remake - they accentuated the fact that he's basically just a big animal too much. Show me a perfect CGI gorilla and I'll just want to go kill poachers or something. Show me KONG, and that's entirely different.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 3:28 p.m. CST

    Should I...? Shouldn't I...?

    by Ribbons

Okay. This is kind of a lame debate anyway, but is he really any bigger there than he is in the trailer? Think about it. He seems really big because he takes up the whole poster, but I think the proportion between him and Ann is about the same.

I'm just here to say my peace...

    by clone-o-mat

...then I'll be on my merry way. Old Kong (Kong Classic) was proportioned like a man. Maybe it sucked, maybe not, but it came first, so it is Kong. New Kong is proportioned like an ape. It's more realistic, but unfortunately, it is therefore not Kong. Same applies to the more realistic version of Godzilla in the American version. More realistic, but not right. And that is my peace.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 3:54 p.m. CST

"but it came first, so it is Kong"

    by I Dunno

Don't take this the wrong way but that's pretty stupid. The first version of Kong is just that, the first interpretation of the character. If the goal was to simply copy the original because it's the "real" version then this remake would be even more useless than I already think it is. As for his size, he damned well better stay the same size throughout the film. I don't consider that nitpicky. With all that technology they'd better get that little detail right.

    by odysseus

What matters is the image itself, and that it has quite an emotional impact for something that could easily come off as ridiculous. Beautifully done -- whatever its purpose.

  • That would kick all the ass. And he should also hop around to the point of flying and have zero weight, like a proper CGI creature.

  • Oct. 5, 2005, 4:06 p.m. CST

I'll amend my earlier remarks to say that

    by FluffyUnbound

...this version of Kong, who looks like he's getting ready to have a series of pictures taken while he's cuddling a kitten so that his keepers can make a fundraising calendar, could work if Kong is never violent. You could make a movie where the filmmakers deliberately go to his island to find something savage and bloodthirsty to film to entertain jaded Americans with no true sense of or perspective for the wild left. The filmmakers could then find Kong, living in the jungle, eating plants, and could then spend the movie trying to provoke him into violence. ["Ok, ACTION! Now stab him in the ass with a spear! Come on, you stupid fucking gorilla! Growl or something! Damn it, get the cattle prods up here!"] You have the filmmakers kill the dinosaurs and not Kong, because that's what asshole Hemingwayesque filmmakers in the 30's would have done - the dinosaurs would have run away, and they would have chased them and killed them. They then pose Kong with the dead dinosaurs the better to service the American fetish for jungle gladiatorianism. Eventually they drag Kong back to New York, where they put him in an all-concrete enclosure that's too small for him and charge people 10 cents each to look at him and throw things at him. Kong eventually dies because they don't know his dietary requirements and are too stupid or lazy to learn them. After he dies, to squeeze a last few bucks out of selling pieces of his carcass, they drag him up to the top of the Empire State Building and drop him [careful to do it on a Sunday where no one below can get hurt and sue] so they can spread the false tale of Kong's bloodthirsty attack on the city. The End. That's the movie that a realistic looking gorilla should mean you have.

"Doesn't really look like 30s New York to me"

    by performingmonkey

Maybe that's because a) you've never been to 1930s New York, b) Jackson and crew have spent a lot longer than you researching how it looked, c) you probably just picture it in black and white. As for Kong's size, I have a feeling they might make him look bigger at the top of the ESB add to the coolness. They did this on the original Kong. They made it so he was double his original size for the climax. (that last sentence is so wrong). This was the Empire cover, so what's the real story? It would be cool if it was a real teaser poster. Also, they should do a Rex/Kong fight poster or an Ann tied up poster.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only remake of willis O'Brian's classic. If you're going to consider De Laurentis' attemp as anything but a spoof, then you have to include King Kong vs Godzilla, as well as that gawdawful 1970s cartoon series and the Classics Illustrated comic book. None of them count (nor did they in their day).

    KONGS SIZE in the TRAILOR....

    by uberman

I beleive he looked smaller when flipping the car because the car is flying TOWARDS the audience P.O.V., while kong is in the background. This is a phenom called 'Perspective'. Did you ever notice how a airplane looks smaller than your hand when its flying off in the horizon? But when you try ad grab it, you catch nothing but air? That is because it is 'Farther Away' than it appears and is, in reality, actually much, much bigger that your enitire room located in your moms basement. Remember, its called, 'Perspective.'

What is it about seeing the King's 'Donkey Kong'?

    by Doc_Strange

Obviously this is a PG-13 rated movie so I think Universal had to castrate Kong in order for it not to rate as a pseudo-beastiality x-rated movie.

    by moviemaniac-7

But if the movie opens in two months, isn't it about time for the REAL THEATRICAL poster? Hopefully they don't do character posters. Ugh. But I loved this image ever since it was announced on the Empire site.

    Rouge Et Noir

    by OldEnoughForMe

was a terrible song by Modern Talking. This poster is cool. Blade Runner! It has that look going for it. Beauty and the Beast at its finest. What an odd tension between those two. Must suck to be in love with someone in a different size. Serkis and mo-cap team is the only thing I'm going to see this for.

1976 King Kong poster is awesome!

    by one9deuce

The artwork with Kong standing on the Twin Towers is outstanding even if the movie is only decent. As cool as the artwork for the Jaws poster. Why don't they make great posters anymore? Seriously, when was the last time a movie had an iconic poster that everyone recognizes? Also, the 1976 King Kong poster said "The most exciting original motion picture event of all time" for those that were paraphrasing in above posts. I think the size of King Kong in this new picture is just right, but the one thing that just keeps bugging me about him is that he does look just like an gorilla. Not unique or anything, just a giant gorilla. The 1933 (and 1976 for that matter) King Kong looked only like King Kong. As much monster as a gorilla, and totally original looking.

    by Colonel_Blimp

And where's zira and cornelius? Hardyharrharr. This picture is too kitsch for my taste. sorry. that look was ok for the spiderman 2 poster, but kong should be more adventurelike, or more romantic. this just reminds me of something you get when you buy a pictureframe at IKEA. i hope the film will be great though. If PJ manages to invest this with as much awesomeness and emotional wallop as he did lotr i'll be one happy camper. my fingers (and opposable ape-toes) are crossed.

    A Gorilla??

    by DiernaSoul

So he's a Mountain Greyback Gorilla now? Interesting... hopefully they'll also do a remake of the sequel "Son of Kong". The ending to that movie always makes me cry. Too bad none of the hobbits from LOTR were able to find time in their schedule to be in this movie. I still think it would be funny to have King Kong stomp on some hobbits.

    Kong's Got Man-Boobs!

Hmmmmm.... In the movie-trailer, Kong looked more like a glorified Mighty Joe Young but on the poster, he obviously looks considerably larger and more monsterous. Just another example of no truth in advertising I suppose.

If you count Andy Serkis' Gollum as a hobbit, then don't despair for he can be found in this film as both Kong himself (not as the Man In Suit...unless you count a white onesie with balls attached to it as a suit. Yes I said balls attached to it you immature talkbackers), and also a highly-scurvy looking Cockney galley cook.

    Don't Like It

    by cabsau

I look forward to emotional depth from this adventure film, but this image says chick flick Kong. Also, while teaser and poster images of the films past exaggerated Kong's size, the depth of this image confuses me. Unless he is going to be bigger than the teaser shows; which could be waaaaay cool, I just scratch my head at the scale, the exaggerated color palate and the message of the image. A soft moment for Kong and Anne in the sunset...PLEASE. So, the new film end

I've tried to avoid watching the video diaries on, keeping my mind's eye clear of Kong information, though I did watch a couple of them. But as a first impression the screenshot of Kong looks good to me. I even suffer mild vertigo seeing Kong elevated so high above the city. This is nothing but a hi-res image WETA cooked up for a magazine to sell magazines. That is it. Kong is a movie MONSTER, not a nice ape in love with a 5'5'' blonde. This is no movie poster. And Harry "knows" Jackson in that they have talked and emailed but they aren't regular phone buddies and Harry doesn't just call him up and ask, "Hey Pete, is this the poster?" Making Kong keeps him occupied. Beautiful image, crappy King Kong movie poaster and definitely NOT NOT NOT a genuine poster. People get sooooo worked up!
