Nobody Seems Impressed With Fox

Published at:  Sep 23, 2005 2:19:13 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s a crime drama, created by writer Josh Berman (“CSI”), about San Francisco detectives charged with the city’s most “bizarre and twisted crimes.” It stars Johnny Messner (“The OC”), Chi McBride (“Boston Public”) and, eventually, Kristin Lehman (“Tilt”).

The critics are a lot less enthusiastic about this serial killer drama than they are about “Criminal Minds,” and they have a right to be. Johnny Messner is no Mandy Patinkin, and writer Berman is no Jeff Davis.

Variety says:

… seems so lifeless and uninspired … In the dubious accomplishments dept., "Killer Instinct" does manage to up the ante on gruesome deaths, with murderous tarantulas and a wholesale bug bath in the premiere, followed by some reasonably graphic vivisection in the next episode. … merely ratcheting up the gross-out factor alone can't breathe much life into these characters, and Messner's impassive performance doesn't yield much heat, even when he's roughing up a suspect. …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… There is a lot of "The Silence of the Lambs" in Fox's creepy new "Killer Instinct," but not enough to make it compelling rather than simply icky. It also is plenty dark and disturbing, but the presentation, while stylish, also has a gratuitous feel. … It's skin-crawling stuff, but also relentlessly gloomy and oddly uninvolving … Messner exudes a weird energy in his performance that sometimes proves as unsettling as the crimes he's investigating, though there also are times when he comes across as maddeningly bland. …

The Orlando Sentinel gives it one star (out of five) and says:

… Killer Instinct isn't a Bruckheimer show; it plays like a bad knockoff of the producer's work. The drama wastes Chi McBride of Boston Public as the detective's boss, and Messner gives a performance that could charitably be called robotic. The series deserves no charity: It's the worst new drama of the fall. …

Newsday says:

…we've seen this type of cop show a million times: serial killer on the loose (in the pilot) who murders and rapes women, and uses a Sydney funnelweb spider to paralyze his victims. Oh yes, that was done on that old show. Hmm, which one was it? Who cares? … The implicit - OK, overt - misogyny aside, "Instinct" is a rip-off and an absurdly obvious one at that …

USA Today gives it one star (out of four) and says:

… The best that can be said for the season's worst show is that it will never be this terrible in exactly the same way again. Creator Josh Berman will be hard-pressed to come up with a crime as sick and yet nonsensical as tonight's opener …

TV Guide says:

… Creepy enough, but where’s the fun? Grim and ghastly, this is hands down the season’s most disgusting pilot … With Messner’s monotone performance setting a soporific tone, the show will give you nightmares when it’s not busy putting you to sleep. …

9 p.m. Friday. Fox.

Get this!! “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Complete Series,” the best TV series ever produced, WAS available for $239.99 new (or $199.99 used). But NOW you can pre-order all seven seasons brand new, including a never-before-issued 40th bonus disc,

What they should have done is make a show based on the video game!!

    That would have been cool!

I thought they'd adapted the shitty N64 game. Apparently, this is another serial killer drama from FOX. Damn.
